Vista + ALchemy = crash on exit?

Posted

I just upgraded to Vista 64, installed ALchemy to get back 3D sound and now every time I exit the game it crashes. I found a post back in *2007* saying this was a known problem.

So here we are 1.5 years later and *SURPIRSE!!!* another turd from Creative that still doesn't work.

Has anyone found a workaround for this crash? Or do I just have to deal with it?

TIA.

If anyone find anything, I'd be highly interested in this myself. I moved on from Vista 64-bit to Windows 7 64-bit, and I'm still having trouble with it (but, thank goodness, the regular 'display driver' crashes have since stopped).

It took me some time to figure out that it was even Alchemy that was the apparent culprit.

I'm using Vista 64 and ALchemy and am not having any problems with it.

Might try posting a CoHHelper report and a HijackThis log. That way we'll have a better idea of what's going on and may be able to help you.

I'm using Vista 64 and ALchemy and am not having any problems with it.

[/ QUOTE ]
I get the same as the others, myself. Everything works great until you quit out of the game - then BOOM! It wouldn't be so bad, but you have to do a Verify after each one (or skip the updater).

Are you sure ALchemy is working on City of Heroes, Eislor? If so, what ALchemy settings are you using on it?

Same here. I spent a 3+ weeks going back and forth between Creative and NCSoft's support trying to figure this out. In the end both insisted it was a problem with the other's product. For my part I decided it was the lesser of two evils to have to lockup after each exit (until I noticed I am not preloading I14 that is) then not having 3d sound.

If anyone has indeed gotten ALChemy running without the lockup on exit I would be greatly interested in knowing how too.

I stopped using Alchemy and just turned on Direct3d sound inside the game and it wouldn't crash and gave better sound than having it off.

Are you using the latest X-Fi drivers in addition to ALchemy?

Also it looks like a new version of ALchemy was released on March 20th. I'm downloading it now.

I know I was because I just installed the card last week. And it crashed on exit all the time.

I still crash with the latest version of ALchemy. And I too am using the latest X-Fi drivers.

I found a quick and dirty way to get the I14 pre-download without having to disable ALchemy -- just start the game in safe mode (check the safe mode box in the updater). When you get to the log in screen click exit. The game won't crash (cause it's not using DirectSound or ALchemy) and the download will start.

And I like how the ALchemy auto update says there are no new updates even though there was one in the beginning of March.

I swear I will NEVER buy another Creative product as long as I live. The hardware is good, but the drivers, software, and support is absolutely abysmal.

And the part that bugs me the most isn't so much the crash and having to wait for it to verify on the next load, but when it crashes it screws up my desktop gamma. And the only way I've found to fix it is to reboot.

So it's getting harder and harder justifying 5.1 sound if it means I have to reboot after every play session.

EDIT: forgot to mention it also borks the X-Fi. It gets stuck in game mode, Audio Console won't run, and I get endless popping and clicking until I reboot.

I've come up with something of a workaround that seems to do the trick.

When you're done playing the game, quit to the login screen. At the login screen press Ctrl-Alt-Del and bring up the Task Manager. Click on the Processes tab, right click on CityofHeroes.exe and select End Process. This will force the game to shut down.

I've discovered when you do it this way it doesn't bork the X-Fi nor does it require a verification when you next play the game.

By no means a perfect solution, but better than any others I've found.
