Crash

My CoH updated finally finished downloading (after about 48 hours) and I was able to login, create a new character, and play a bit. I completed the tutorial and was doing a few of my first quests when CoH crashed (Mac OS X itself was unaffected; only the game crashed). Is this unusual, or is the Mac client still a little buggy? I was enjoying the game and will definitely continue my trial, but am leery to pay $15/month if the Mac client is buggy, so I'm hoping this crash was unusual.

My system is a late-2006 Mac Pro 3.0GHz Quad Xeon with 8.0GB RAM with a 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT video card running Mac OS X 10.5.6 with all of the latest Apple software updates installed.

There is a known issue when you change zones or tasks a lot that may cause the game to crash. And unfortunately, when you're a new player, that's the first thing you do. The issue has been on the schedule for a fix for a while now.

You can reduce the crashes a bit, but it takes some practice. When your game client starts to feel more sluggish than normal *after* zoning, type /reloadgfx in the chat box and hit Return.

This game seems very buggy. It is crashing on me at least once an hour. I may shelve it and check in on it again in a few months, but I don't think I want to pay for it in this state...

Before you do that, send in a Support request so they know how many people are experiencing frequent crashing.

Good idea!

I just played a couple of hours straight, using the "/reloadgfx" command as mentioed above, and has ZERO crashes! So, that does seem to work for me. Its annoying to have to remember to do this, but at least it makes the game playable.

EDIT: I forgot to thank CuppaManga for the "/reloadgfx" command tip... Thanks!!!

You can use the /bind command to make it less tedious.

Off the top of my head you can type

/bind u reloadgfx

in order to fix the u key as the reloadgfx command.

The "/reloadgfx" command (especially using PumBumbler's keyboard binding tip) made the game very playable for me, so I bought it and signed up for a 3-month recurring subscription! Thanks again to all who gave me advice and tips!!

Paragon City for me (at least for now). I have 4 characters already, levels 8, 6, 3, and 6. This game is addictive.

Indeed it is. I've been here since the beginning (Beta of CoH), have WAY too many toons, and just recently got my first 50. lol

I've found that I crash MUCH more often using my laptop (which I play on minimum settings) than when using my desktop (with which I use maximum settings). Neither of which are Macs, but the root issue is basically the same.

When I first started playing I had only 512 Mb of RAM on the laptop... I now have 1.5 Gb of RAM, and it runs much better than it had way back when. You might consider adding more RAM, if you don't have much already... an extra gigabyte RAM is dirt cheap now.

My Mac Pro has 8GB of RAM. I certainly hope that's enough!

It's not related to your system specs, unless the corruption of the graphics cache (or whatever) is more severe if it's being used differently due to less RAM. Just /reloadgfx every time you zone and it should be fine. (Remembering to do so consistently has completely eliminated my crash problems, both on my fairly beefy iMac, as well as my very lightly-configured Macbook Air.)

How much did you pay for that? 2k with Mac's horrible RAM prices?

If you're going to troll please be at least minimally informed about what you're trolling about. Mac's are the hardware and software that Apple Inc. makes. If you're talking about the vendor's overinflated pricing on upgrades and accessories, the Apple Store does have that, just as Dell and HP do.

If you want to purchase memory that is qualified to perform properly on your Apple hardware without busting the bank, you might want to try macsales.com (OWC). Not that I have anything to do with them other than being a satisfied customer.

Do you know what the workaround is? I use /reloadgfx, but even that isn't helping enough now.

I have no stability problems on my PC, just the Mac.

Same thing here. I can play the game just fine if I reboot to Windows, but playing via Mac client means at some point it will start freezing. /reloadgfx helps, but some nights it doesn't help enough. It's a MacBook Pro with 4G of ram, so I'm guessing RAM isn't the issue.

I'm starting to wonder if our problems aren't high enough on the importance scale to address immediatly.

There are many, many bugs in the game, some years old. Furthermore we do not know how hard it is to fix the bug you are experiencing. If they are not addressing this problem, it is entirely possible it is for a good reason (addressing other, older, or more common bugs). On the other hand, the devs may well be addressing this bug as we speak, but it may take a long time to find the problem, figure out a solution, implement it correctly, test it, and release it. As a software developer myself -- responsible for software which I know has years-old bugs that I just do not have time to fix -- I can tell you that as much as it sucks, you just have to be patient with software fixes. There's no quick way to fix everything.

The stability on my Mac, with the latest patch, is bordering on the near-unplayable, which ought to be treated seriously as a customer retention issue.

What leads you to believe that it might not be treated seriously?
