..so im working on coloring my drawings and I end up taking forever on one small area till it looks EXACTLY like how it would look if I ..err.. painted it by hand (brush stroke filters ) ... only..umm.. it took twice as long..

so dose anyone use filters when coloring with photoshop?.. how do you just paint it the RIGHT way and not junk it up?.. or can you even junk up a computer coloring?..

at what point do you have to say... "thats good enough" and move on to a different area??

Hard to say exactly, why not post up some pics so that we can get a better feel for where you're at?

Also, head to deviant art for some great photoshop coloring tutorials.

There's a saying I heard one of my art professors say in college, "Art is never completed. Only abandoned." Basically, there got to be a point where you move on. I always say I don't like looking at my own work after 10 minutes of showing it. Everyone sees art, but all I see are mistakes. I don't try to fix them cause I've already decided I'm done and fixing them will just end up me finding more mistakes and the cycle goes on and on. Instead, I just learn from them for the next project.

There's a similar saying regarding writing. that a story is never finished, just its time has come. Any writer is going to over time find something to improve, but at some point you have to let it go and call it done, more so if you're wanting to get it published, but yeah.

Don't use brush stroke filters when coloring. Learn to use the various paint brush options and just paint. Don't lay down color and then try to use a filter to achieve a natural media look, it's not a good approach.

When I started coloring ... I would color an area until it was done and then move on to the next ...

In my last piece ... I would pick a color lay it down here there, then move to the lighter version of that color (or some highlight/shade tone) and lay it here and there ... what that did is that I was working on a much larger part of the image and I didn't end up overworking one area for ever ... since I was a little "further" from the picture I had a more ... generalized look so I didn't worry about little details as much.

But my most important lesson ... you can clean at the end ... it doesn't take long ... and certainly less time than trying to stay "within the lines" all the time.

That is immediately what I thought of when I read the title. That quote is by Leonardo Da Vinci.

When I worked as a photojournalist, I would spend a bit too much time on shots and layouts I REALLY liked. In that business, you don't have the luxury of hanging over a half page layout when there's a deadline. He gave me a phrase that I still use to this day...

"Call it art and move on."

That being said, it IS something that you have to learn on your own as to how much is too much. A trial and error thing that has to happen with you as an artist. Juggie's right too. Post some pieces and folks will be able to tell you if they are overworked.

Maybe try a piece with a self-given deadline? Give yourself a reasonable amount of time and then force yourself to be done at that point. It will help you learn to detach from the piece. (something I'm STILL learning )
