NaNoWriMo is coming!
I thought about doing this last year, but a lot of stuff happened that got me in a 'depressed-no-writey' kind of mood.
I might try it this year, but I'm not sure.
Not only am I doing NaNoWriMo for the third year, but this year's novel is based on my CITY OF HEROES Justice-based SG.
I am SUCH a geek.

And I'll see about linking it to the forums here, if people are actually interested.

Wowzers! I had really underestimated how frustrating it would be to be reading the forum for week without being able to reply!
Big kudos to everyone who's giving it a try! Hopefully, we can all cheer each other on and offer advice and encouragment when the going gets tough!
If you're looking for an idea, then just think about anything you ever wished someone would write a book about, and make that YOUR book! Seriously, you'd be surprised how many published novels get started just that way.
Especially when you're talking about Young Adult authors like J.K.Rowling (Harry Potter if you've been living under a rock for the last eight years), Christopher Paolini (Eragon and sequels), or Stephenie Meyer (Twilight and sequels).
Here's an interesting quote from an interview with Stephenie Meyer - "I wrote Twilight over the summer of 2003. I didn't think about publishing at all until it was entirely done--I was just telling myself a story. Writing just for the sake of writing, just for my own pleasure, was certainly the greatest highlight of the whole experience. "
Think of NaNoWriMo as your chance to tell yourself the story that you've been dying to hear. Then you can clean it up and see if maybe the rest of the world would want to hear it to!
I'm in, and I've had a story simmering with a cover on in low heat for about six years now.

I've done this for two out of the last three years. I have an idea, but I'm not sure I'm game to try again this year.

So, for you people who have done this before - What did you find worked best for you? Trying to write a couple of pages every day or a chapter every few days? What did you do to keep yourself motivated?
I keep myself motivated through music. As part of my lead-up to November, I generally construct playlists, whether for a particular character, scene, or the overall book. (In fact, my two previous novels have full playlists to listen to while reading.)
I set myself the goal of writing 1700-ish words per day, but if I hit a groove, I keep going and going and going.

Hey guys,
I thought Id post here and say hello for the first time.
Im also joining in NaNo this year and doing a CoH story. If it all goes to Ill be publishing it as I go (by well I obviously mean I write it and its not complete junk ).
Good luck to everyone else whos having a go, CoH related or not. November is going to so much fun.
As an amateur and aspiring writer, I think I should try to do this (my first time)!
I'll be writing about our beloved "City Of" Universe, so if it's not total [censored] I'll post it.
Also: Good Luck to everyone else trying to do this! Hope we all write something cool (or failing that, have fun doing it)!
If you have an hour with nothing to do, I highly recommend having a look at the NaNoWriMo Character and Plot Realism Q&A Forum.
It's purpose is to be a place where people who want to make sure their story details are authentic (or at least authentic sounding) can ask questions about their plot points and get answers from people who know about them.
The cross-section of information that people ask about and that others answer about is a weird kind of entertainment all on its own. Plus, you might have some input that will help someone else with their story!
And so it begins. Well, after all the home stuff, going out, sorting out a present for a friend, dinner, attending a party, some more sleep.
Ah, well, maybe tomorrow.
Should anyone be interested, I'm also WriMo-ing under the alias "Bugz_Toon", and, much to no-one's surprise, I'm also doing a superhero story, although it has little or no connection to the City of universe.

I'm off to a late start due to my son coming home from college for the weekend and blithely inviting a school friend along with him; a girl (but not a girlfriend) no less.
Needless to say, the priorities for today are housecleaning and spritzing up.
I guess I'll have to figure on double the word-count tomorrow.
If you get a good couple days going, it's easier to justify slacking off.
... Then again I have 3 background documents (characters and pertinent points in history along with randomization for new characters) that I also have to keep up while I'm writing. And, make sure that the historical doodads are somewhat entertaining, and that the main characters all in a family line don't get too ridiculously boring or repetitive. There's a lot of begatting in my books.
Please read my FEAR/Portal/HalfLife Fan Fiction!

I have heard about the NaNoWriMo, and while I dont plan on doing anything about it this year, next year I think I can cook something up.
Oh and Samuraiko, The CoX character in WoW thing has been a silly little idea ive had in my head for a few years now. NO i wont write it, but hey I can still imagine it or write a short story on it and lock it away never to see the light of day.

National Novel Writing Month, more colloquially known as NaNoWriMo is around the corner.
I've watched it from the sidelines for a couple of years, but never thought seriously about participating because "I'm not a writer".
Well, this year, it seems I AM a writer. The jury is out on how good, but that's another story.
NaNoWriMo is a movement of sorts. It's sole goal is to encourage people to write. Specifically, write a novel. The website explains better than I can and in more detail. I bet that many of the folks here are familiar with it already.
In a nutshell - You make a commitment to spend the month of November writing a 50,000 word (or more) novel. You "win" if you succeed in doing it. That's it. There are no prizes, no contests, and in fact nobody will even read your novel unless you post it publicly someplace (or get it published!). The whole event is about letting go of your inhibitions and excuses and writing. Not about editing or judging quality - That's for afterwards.
Anyway, I've decided that this year I'm going to give it a shot. Since there's a lot of creative talent in this forum, I figured I'd do a shout-out and see if anyone else has considered it and encourage those of you who haven't yet signed up!
It's pretty clear that one of the main functions of the NaNoWriMo organization is to act as a support group to keep their participants motivated and inspired. If you've ever considered writing a novel (any novel, not just a CoH story) then consider this your opportunity to actually do it, instead of 'one of these days'.
This thread is your cheer squad and your support group. One of 'em, anyway.
Come November first, I'll be launching the story of Valentina Rodriguez, a woman who, through a series of improbable events, finds herself over her head in intrigue and danger in the best tradition of the "an ordinary person finds themselves inexplicably in the position of fighting a covert organization bent on world domination and finds romance and self-esteem along the way" genre. *heh*
Yeah, I know. You don't have time. You don't have the skill (so you say). You don't have the drive. You don't have the ambition.
Do it anyway.
The worst that'll happen is that you'll run out of time, ideas, or ambition and you'll get to smugly say "See, Slickriptide? I was right! You're an idiot!"
On the other hand, you might just get to the end of November with a novel in one hand and your NaNoWriMo winner's certificate in the other, able to proudly tell your family and friends, "I am a novelist!"
