Yeah. 'Dang' sums up nicely. I'm hoping to get a second piece from him after that. He's coloring that one right now so there should be an update in a few days .

Wow. Quite the collection.

Ok, I think we have officially broken the DANG-barrier and moved out into DAAYYYAAAM-space!

Yeah. Pretty much what I said when he sent it . I've asked for maybe 3 miniscule changes, but this is gonna be money WELL spent. Look at those feathers - that's just crazy.

(Mmm. Disgea. I have a friend whose MM has pets named Prinny 1, 2, etc. ...They explode...)

Lol I love all the games by the ppl who made Disgaea. Even the early ones. Your friend has good tastes... Have you played it too? Most ppl dont no about it. Course this IS an art forum XD..

*Edit* Meaning that I guess ppl could find Disgaea pics by surfing DA.

Great piece by JCSD - congrats!!

Thanks, Ether. He's a little tricky to pay (have to wire transfer rather than paypal), but so, so worth it. If folks are thinking about having a piece done, you might look him up ([u]after[u] I get one more ).

Not Nike IX, but a quick shout out to Bokuman who created this little glimpse at my new Fire/Fire Blaster.

...Think of this as what happens when a Hellions' ritual to promote a new Dammed goes horribly wrong (or right ).

And after saving the day at the Atlas Park Fashion Show in 'Smoke and Mirrors' Nike IX hung around to give the photographers a little thrill .

that's an amazing collection, just sheer number and the quality of them is astounding. it reminds me of the size of the sketch collections I've seen that year after year con goers build up.

One thing I love about large art collections of the same character, be it sketches or commissions or a mix of both is the see the variety of ways the same character looks drawn by so many different people.

I've built up my own mini collection of sketches of Maggie (the lady in my avatar) from con and comic book store appearances, but its no where close to the collections here.

For the most part I've been very fortunate. I have to recomend staring at an artist's work for a bit before commiting.

Well, San Diego is a BIG show, but mostly the internet makes things faster. I also participated in a lot of holiday sales.

That has been cool to see. There are definite trends with Nike from the cute heroine to the warrior woman.

It'll grow . If looking at these gives you some ideas on who to contact, that's great!

I know who I'd want to contact to get stuff, I jsut don't have the free money to get what I'd want from the appropriate people. In the two years I went to San Diego, in 05 and 06, I inquired about commissions and such and they all were willing for the msot part, but most of them went with the standard $150 or so.

So I tend to just suffice on the free or nearly free sketches I can knab at local conventions and free comic book days. For the moment my free cash is going into CoH art, because I wanna see my chars comic-zied. Maggie I can see that anytime, Heri and co I can't.

We'll see if my Maggie collection grows or not, the Image foudners are in town for FCBD this year, but they're all pretty high profile so we'll see.

Thanks for the encouragement. If nothing else I'm thankful for what I have. I got a sketch of Maggie by the first person who pencilled her into comic book existence, so I'm happy.

Most of my pieces have been in the $40-$80 range. Honestly, for $150 I would hope you get something extraordinary.

I only pay over $100 for either something insanely good like a Graver piece or a piece with 3 or more characters in good quality like the Ladies of Frost piece Liz did for me.

Posted

Graver's is the only piece that I've paid that much for. The commissions I've gotten have been insanely cheap for the quality (in my opinion at least, like my Freyals commission that's in my avatar)

Posted

Okay, I would also pay through the roof for a good sculpture or resin figure of one of my characters.

Posted

I totally would too. Unfortunately it's hard to find people that make them where I am happy with the faces. The couple that I did find were so far out of my price range I'd have to win the lottery to consider it.

Posted

I can see that now regarding the price, but I was new to the comic book convention sketch and commission world at the time. I didn't know anyone who had gotten commissions before, nor had I been exposed to it in any way shape or form. The SDCC was my first experience in asking about them, and it seemed fairly logically to ask and trust who I was asking, as they, gee I don't know, professional and established comic book pencillers/artists. I didn't have an idea what commissions went for, so naturally I asked about prices, to several artists. I kept getting the $100-$150 range. So.... I figured if I've already asked around 10+ and kept getting the same ballpark it prolly was well enough to assume that was what I was going to have to expect.
