January Challenge: HEROES (the tv series)

Overview: HEROES has been a hit on TV for the last year and is notorious for its character development and cliffhanger storylines. Try to bring some of these aspects into a piece inspired by HEROES.

Rules: This one is fairly open when it comes to mediums used. You can use traditional pencil, paints, and markers, or digital ones as well. In addition, for this month you are also able to use video capturing, screenshot and photo manipulation, and 3D rendering. Keep in mind though, that if you are only doing up a sketch, but your ‘opponent’ has put more work into theirs, you might come up a little short in votes.

There will be only one entry allowed per person, and it is due no later than January 25th. Voting will be held the following week. If there is no entry submitted or it is late, you automatically forfeit and lose your spot on the rankings board.

Please keep all your discussion and posting of pieces to this thread. The voting WILL BE ON ANOTHER THREAD.

Good luck true believers,

-FArt Admin.

I'm a little unclear, do we draw one or more of them, or say our favorite scene... or a possible meeting of them? Is it anything Heroes? or comic book versions of Heroes...

I thought the fan art things would be around city of heroes?

Lil unclear myself <,< but I'm sure Juggy will explain more.

(I don't watch TV so I actually know nothing of Heroes)

Hmmmm, I didn't know it'd be so confusing for you all.

It's really quite simple: Draw something inspired by the show (ie. Fan Art).

For example...

-a sketch of a main actor.
-A group shot of them in hero uniforms.
-a screenshot manipulated to look like one of the Heroes.
-a 'cliffhanger' scene worthy (or copying) the show.

Basically, just use the show as a jumping off point - you can get creative from there. Think of it a little bit like your manager just handed you a request from a client... you've got the broad strokes of it, but the specifics are up to you.

Edit: Specific answers...

So does the piece have to be in the Heroes world, or is it just suppose to be inspired and can almost be anything?

[/ QUOTE ]

I'd expect someone to look at your piece and be able to see a connection.

The graphic novels or the TV show, as long as we can see a connection to them. Look at the link I provided in the OP for character ideas and such.

Yeah, that's going to be a large part of these challenges, but this first one is because I'm "jonesing" because the the writers strike. Worry not, you'll get more CoH goodness if you make it through the first round.

Yeah, this is where it gets tough. With art challenges and such, it's hoped that most people have a general knowledge on the subject. Sorry my little squirrel, I hope the wiki link above gives you some ideas on the characters and such.

Hope that helps answers some questions y'all.

Well, guess I'm out, then.

I have never watched Heroes, so I have no idea what's going on with the show.

Have fun, everyone!

I know about heroes.... i just dont like it very much (*ducks!*)

It would give more things to work with if it were coh fanart! and maybe if some really good things come out, they could make it into the scoop! (i doubt they want some other shows fan-art in a city of heroes thing...)

Not to buck at the challenge, love the show and willing to do it, just I think we were led to believe this would all be COH related... sorry to loose ya Draco.

I'm kind of surprised that we're losing a few people based on the topic choice.

I've had to do up a number of pics for people in games that I have never played (cough - WoW) before and simply went with what info I had. Heck, I've even done up pics based solely on a written description. lol

Honestly, that is what the "challenge" and "battle" part of this is all about. Sure, we could all draw Statesman... and then see who does him best.

But isn't it better to throw some twists into it here and there?

Maybe I'm wrong here, and if so, we can call this off before it gets started.

If 6 people come into here and call it quits, we'll end it now - no need to torture anyone.

Honestly though, I thought this was a good way to kick it off - heck, who doesn't like HEROES??

((haha, no worries Arctic_Innocence, I know not everyone actually likes the series... but it is kind of popular ya know))

Yeah, a couple people have given me that impression as well. I've never stated it, and never thought it, so I'm guessing it was just assumed on some people's parts?

Its cause they dont have fancy costumes! How can they be heroes without something snazzy?

Here's your chance to give them one!

Throw one of the HEROEs into a pair of tights (actually, very similar to what I was thinking of doing for this challenge)

I've never actually watched "Heroes" but I don't see what's the big deal. I mean...isn't that what the internet is for? You could just goto google and search for Heroes and you'd get like a million reference shots.

I'm in !

I gave Peter Petrelli the costume of my character Purple Sentinel.

I've used an original Tim Sale artwork done for the show and turned it into a CoH piece.

Result here.

Oh, there was a limited amount of places ?

Never Mind then, I'm not sure I can commit to every month challenge.

He can take my spot, Juggertha.

As for me dropping out, to be honest it's not the theme that threw me. Over the next few months, I'm going to be really busy going back to school, and more than likely I won't have the time to do a project like this.

Good luck to those who remain! I'll be cheering you on.

Sorry mate, two things:
1-We're hoping for more than just a screenie (at least mod it in some way)
2-You would have had to of signed up for this a few weeks back (it's relatively closed for newentries now).

I can try, if all your ideas are so inspiring to me, it will be cake

well done, Spino. I recognized the picture from the show even though I haven't seen all the episodes.

I've started on a piece that I hope will follow the guidelines.

We have until Jan 25th, right?
I'm still working on the latest batch of AoA pics when I get the time to do them, but I want to finish them up before starting on this...

Aye, you guys have got a month - no rush on it.

I am another one of them people living under a rock. i haven't seen the show. but heard good things about it...

personally i think throwing a curve ball like this is catching us all off guard. not to mention that it's somewhat unfair. (for clueless people like me)

but, i don't like bailing out of a competition. but i think i might get voted off. sigh, let's give it the good O' college try.
