it more the fact that juggy said something about charater development and cliffhangers. and for someone who dosen't know what's going on...

it would be like if i drew states man and Black widow fighting .... dark elves. and states man unleashes with his super mind attack. and black widow grew 120' and lighting bolt came out of her head.

i'm just going to have to read up. wish i learned how to read.

Meh... all you have to learn is what Peter Petrelli (hero) and/or Sylar (villain) look like. Both of them could potenially have any super power you can dream up, so you don't have to know much else.

Posted

how about the power...... to move you?

Posted

No, no... That one belongs to me.

Ok then, let's go with a similar example.

I ask you to draw the characters of Gilligan's Island as Superheroes using whatever medium you like. I also add that you can use the fact that they're trapped on an island.

I provide youthis link and tell ya to have fun.

Now, you may have never watched the show, but after taking 10 minutes to read the info page on Wiki, you'd have a pretty good idea of the story and characters.

Honestly, anyone who is coping out because they've never watched the show is being a little weak about this.

Keep in mind that not all commissions/art projects allow you the luxury of "knowing" your topic deeply - sometimes you've just got to go with what you've got.

((Come on people, read the wiki link, ask questions, find answers. It may be harder than just giving up, but you'll grow from it))

Snrk, sounds good to me. I've had alot weirder commissions and all than just 'draw something having to do with the Heroes show'. There's alot of fun you could have with that. A host of parodies come to mind!

Think of it as a learning experience for commisions that you can only get a description and maybe a picture.

[/ QUOTE ]

EXACTLY.

Heck, sometimes there's not even a picture.

What Juggy said! This being a challenge is what makes it so fun

It's hard to be one of the first posting though, so many people can end up raising the bar by the end.

I think the major issue at play here is that people signed up to do art about City of Heroes and the first thing that happened is that the subject matter isn't about City of Heroes. Of course it's gonna be offputting to a lot of people. Moreso, if they're either not fans of the show, or not knowledgeable about it in the first place.

But it's Juggy's art competition and his call to pick the topic. You either abide by it or get out of the water. However, this goes both ways. Don't put anyone down for wanting out of it, when an obvious bait and switch was pulled. This is not a paid commission. This is not a job. This is something that's supposed to be FUN and if it's not fun for those people, then let them leave without making them feel inferior.

While I would agree that there's no need to talk down on people who want out... there was no bait and switch. Juggy never specified it would be CoX fanart. Just fanart by artists from the CoX forums. I, like many, assumed it would be CoX-related, since that's what it seemed to be leaning towards. Unlike many, apparently, I admit that I made an assumption without much substance. And thinking about it... I draw enough CoX as it is. Spanning out is a good thing.

I've started a sketch for a painting, incidentally. It'll probably end up taking a goodly chunk of the timeframe available, though, so I wouldn't expect to see it very soon.

Well, in a way it is CoH related. CoH is about playing heroes, Heroes is sort of a different take on the super hero idea, kind of a 'what if' in the real world. If you could suddenly shoot hurricanes out of your butt one day, would you really go out and grab a costume to celebrate it and try to fight crime with your glutious gusts? I've definitely seen a few people playing their characters with the take Heroes has taken in CoH. More so Heroes has a very comic booky theme behind it, all the narator intros are done in comic style fonts ( based of the creators hand writting I hear), and there's even a comic book artist in the series who draws the future and all (There's some truely awesome art done by the guy in the series! There's something cool in my brain about painting a full comic panel on a canvas)

But with how open ended this is, you can go alot of ways with it without knowing that much about the series, but with using something you DO know. Like oh.. say... uhm... there's a link there to the powers and names of a bunch of characters, you could easily find pictures of them all and draw them in CoH signature character costumes. Or like he said earlier, drawing them with hero style tights and costumes - just google what their face would look like, take a quick peek at their power for an idea and run with it.

I'd say that while the show 'Heroes' is definitely SuperHero related, it's not 'City of Heroes' related. While it's a parallel topic, it's not actually the same. I agree that it's an interesting challenge and that it's likely worth looking into, but there are obviously people that are unhappy with it. Asking them to suck it up and deal is acceptable in a commission world, but this simply a fun diversion, not a paid project. Just let them leave the competition peacefully and you'll be left with a more tightly knit group of people that enjoy it, rather than people that feel put off by the subject change.

Probably better then how I do it... spend an entire month working on a piece only to decide to redraw it the night before its due in.

If people signed up to do CoH art ONLY, then they were mistaken. I do not believe I ever said that this would be CoH art ONLY. It was a FAN ART contest ... and this topic relates to both Heroes and Fan Art.

Now this is where you step over the line into trolling. Calling what I did as a 'bait and switch' is casting doubt on my honesty here. That phrase is usually used for crooked salesmen and advertisers - but you've chosen to use it on me.

You've come to my threads before and tried to argue your case... even though this is a peaceful forum, you seem bent on making sure everyone agrees with you - whether it be your opinion on my art, or now the fact that I'm somehow dishonest.

If you don't like my art - fine, don't comment on it. It's no loss to me.

If you don't like this contest - fine, don't join. Oh wait, you haven't joined. So you're here stiring things up (and yes, saying that about me is definately looking for trouble), yet you're not even involved in the contest.

You may say you're just a concerned member of this community, but hurling personal insults... sounds like trolling in my books.

Anyone who is unhappy with it is welcome to bow out. Heck, I even said that if a good portion do, we can call the whole thing off (obviously, if there are a number of people unhappy with it, I've done something wrong).... BUT, ONE PERSON HAS BOWED OUT. And that person gave scheduling conflicts as their reason.

Suichiro, I know what you're going to do here - you're going to continue to post your point and argue away no matter what. I've seen it beforewhen you wanted to critisize my art.

I asked you then to kindly not post any more comments on my art as they are not welcome.

Now it seems that you've found another direction in which to troll.

The best way to deal with trolls is not to feed them, so this post will be your only thingto snack on. I will respond no further to you.

To be clear to everyone else though..

-This contest IS meant to be fun, and I worry that any massive amount of arguing might take away from that. Let's try not to k.

-I never meant for this contest to be CoH exclusive. I meant, and posted as such, for it to be based on these forums and Fan Art.

-I honestly expected people to come with a variety of pieces for the challenges. Heck, I'm expecting to see morphed screenshots and Peanuts cartoons as well.

-There are a few people who want into the contest, so if you have to bow out - feel free. I initially gave a heavy descriptive warning about how long this contest may be (so as to catch only people who would like to be in it for the long run), but looking at it now, it'll last for around 6 months. If you're good and lucky, you'll make it to the finals, if not, you can cheer along with everyone else.

-If anyone feels I've been dishonest with this contest, please take it to a PM and we can discuss it. This contest is being run by me, myself, and I. If there's a question of honesty, it'll ruin the fun.

Good luck to all, and just a reminder, you've got about 25 days left
