Discussion: The City Scoop July 6th 2007
Double art section FTW!
I also loved the Liz interview and the Bayani one was quite informative too!

Hmm, I think the lead story should have mentioned that the Steel 70 thing happened on Test and that the strategy employed has already been negated by the Devs.
[/ QUOTE ]
Yeah, we've been talking it over amongst ourselves, too, and we can't figure out why we didn't mention that it was on Test. Good call, Ironik, thanks.
Mentioning the patch, though that's tricky. We posted at 12:09 PM, but Lighthouse posted the updated patch at 2:50 PM. Darn those sneaky devs!
Considering that the news of the Steel 70 event took place last week, it wouldn't be suprising that an "interesting development" took place shortly after the print (or, in role-playing terms, beforehand if you want to amend the issue in some way).
I would suggest removing the paragraph involving the strategies we mentioned such as the "Slow" powers. You can fill that space if you have to by mentioning how "Before the attack began, several Heroes removed their capes, a symbol of dedicating the battle to Hero 1 and all who the Rikti have taken from their loved ones. It was a clear sign of Humanity's defiance against the alien threat, recalling the original act of commemoration that was made in the wake of Omega Team's sacrifice." That should fit nicely and remove the problem about the strategy fix. Besides, the cape thing is partually true: Several of us removed our capes and wings to try and reduce lag (hense why I'm not wearing mine in the screenshot).
Raid Leader of Task Force Vendetta "Steel 70", who defeated the first nine Drop Ships in the Second Rikti War.
70 Heroes, 9 Drop Ships, 7 Minutes. The Aliens never knew what hit them.
Now soloing: GM-Class enemy Adamaster, with a Tanker!
Thanks for the suggestion, Sylph. In my limited experience in fooling with the "post as HTML" function on these boards, it's pretty danged difficult to edit HTML once it's been posted it tries to re-format as UBB code.
We'll see what can be done, though.
Awesome. Again, just a suggestion. The complete version of the revision might be worded more like this:
[ QUOTE ]
The Heroes of Task Force Vendetta are now calling themselves the Steel 70 in reference to the place and number of Heroes involved. And before the attack began, several of them removed their capes as a symbol of dedicating the battle to Hero 1 and the sacrifice of Omega Team. The act was a clear sign of Humanity's continued defiance against the alien threat, recalling Omega Team's valiant sacrifice in the first war once again.
[/ QUOTE ]
This is fairly close to the length and size of the original text. It should hopefully ease some issues regarding the strategy that was woven into the story by replacing it with a meaningful reference. Again, like you said, not sure how well this can be implemented, but hopefully it will be of use.

Found another typo. Hopefully the last one.

Researchers from Vanguard, the special UN organized sent in to aid the city, have expressed much excitement since the wreckage was brought into their laboratory the following morning.

Organized should be organization.
Not an important typo by any means though. Again, great job Scoop Team.

Another great edition. I really missed the advice column from LiquidX however. Hope that comes back next time as it is often my favorite section.
This was a pretty good one. Arguements about its appropriateness aside, that was a great article about the attack on the drop ship. Though I noticed the "State of the Archetype" column was missing this week. That one's always interesting.
Currently published Mission Architect arcs:
Arc ID# 70466: From the Abyss.
Arc ID# 403174: The Serpent's Revenge.
Arc ID# 534236: The Clockwork Angel.
Yup SotA was one of those 'real life' things that came up, same with Liquid's column I think. It should be back next week.

Don't worry, it'll be back. Unfortunetly, some things came up that needed my attention, and it prevented me from getting anything done.
Also, anyone who gets the reference that was put in the scoop gets +10 cool points.

You already had +10 cool points, Mantid. And you got the T-Shirt, too.
I thought we took one season's worth of his moultings and made the T-Shirt, thus technically he IS the T-Shirt.

Way to take it to the scoop Tundy. Someone's gotta keep'm honest an' by pie if nobody else is, its gonna be the J-Force.
Now that bein said I actually think the Steel 70 article is the first thing the City Scoop has done right.
People are getting too hung up on the fact that it was on test.
The event the article talks about is not the raid on the dropships, its that 70 people got together to kill something.
A community event is exactly what the scoop should be following. And in response to people saying "oh well then we should talk about hammy raids or the pylon raid" No, those are cannon events the devs reward. There is no reward for the dropships. Maybe some measly xp, but you could get more xp faster from monster island.
No this was 70 people getting together to do something that hasn't been done before just to say they did it. That is the kind of community events I expect/want to read about from a community paper.
So I have to say good job City Scoop fer actually being on the ball.
Of course I haven't read it yet, on account that I don't read the City Scoop.

-The Legendary J-Man-
PS in the same vein I think the scoop should talk about Tanker Tuesdays on champion.
PSS If BtM is aiming to be what they described, they are really, really dropping the ball. It could be so much more.

I always have to read these a few days after they post, due to schedule. I love the whole City Scoop sh-bang. You guys rock! And I have to say that the Classifieds made me laugh.

Now I know why my ears were burning at the Tiger game, go-cart track and poolside this weekend! I'm sorry I haven't taken any time to catch up on art since the holiday.
Thank you for including my Raging Fury piece in the Scoop, and for your encouragement
I agree the interview with Liz is awesome! She's so well spoken.
Have to agree that the scoop on an event on the test server was a little misplaced. Make the scoop about the live servers, please.
I read the first city scoop moments before reading this one, and overall I was very impressed with both. I like the variety of stories and articles.

Weve talked about this amongst ourselves, and weve come to the conclusion that the Test server contains its own community that should be treated exactly as well as the other communities in this game (servers, PvPers, fan art, etc.).
We also decided that it was a mistake to not acknowledge that this was a test server event, and that this news was relevant only to those that care about either Issue 10s progress or the test server community. In the future, we will be more mindful of that. To put it more bluntly, shortly after people pointed out our mistake, there was a large collective slapping of foreheads as we realized our oversight.

My fear is that all the latest and greatest stuff will always be on test. Well, maybe not the "greatest", but the "latest" for sure. Do you want to do an article on Wentworths, or Striga when there is a bunch of stuff most players haven't yet seen happening on test? Probably not. You can't say test is like any other server when it gets all the updates first. All the new bling and shiny will always be there and my fear is that all the articles will focus on that. So all the players may feel like if they don't play on test, they may never make it into the scoop's splashy front page.
What wrong with waiting till things are on live and reporting on things that all the players can relate to or be a part of? The exciting things that are happening now to real heroes, not mirror images. Otherwise, the city scoop becomes a "What if?" comic book of events that maybe drastically different (or irrelevant) by the time they reach the 'real' City of Heroes and Villains.
If test is reported on, and I agree that many cool and relevant things may happen on test, maybe it needs to be part of a 'time warp dimensional' column each week. 'Dimensional warder forecasts', etc. But please don't make it front page news when there are plenty of interesting things happening on live servers that everybody can relate to.

I agree for things like the 'Steel 70', but things like Timeforce 2 and other hosted events of that nature that are about bringing people from the different servers together should be covered.

[/ QUOTE ]
For the most part, the "stuff on test" isnt' going to be all that different from the stuff on live. It's far different now, obviously, as they're getting ready for an issue release... but the majority of the time? Test *is* no different. What you'd see coming from there mostly would be major PVP announcements, as people can copy their favourite characters from any server, spec them for PVP (a few different times if they so choose, with different copies) and battle against people from other servers. Task forces, too, can be done this way... yet it's usually not very different from live at all.

We'll work on getting that fixed for you. We're not quite at the stage where we can triple check every name we get, but you have my apologies.

Completely understandable...I know that typos can happen and it's impossible to check every little detail (heck, we're all only human!). Many thanks for working on getting it fixed Lemur_Lad! I really appreciate it!
