The Red Badge

Trying for a Golden-Age, quasi-patriotic look with out being "AMERICA, [censored] YEAH!"

Are those flared gloves made out of spandex?

I say "meh". The yellow clashes with the rest of the costume. Also, the golden age style has a lot of bright colors. That blue is on the darker side. I suggest choosing a brighter blue.

I don't like the shiny texture.

Probably should have used the "matte" texture though.

Ok, forget the Captain America angle, let's go more "mystery man" style.

Version 2

Now that looks a lot better than the first. Vintage, yet stylish.

It definitely lost something in the second version. I prefer the first version with less blinding yellow pants. Try a light tan brown for a leather pant look. Like an old adventure serial hero. And use the uncovered head instead, the hood is what's really making the first outfit not work.

So a combo of the two, basically.

I disagree...I really like the hood on the first one. It's unusual, with a distinctive shape that makes it stand out from every other patriotic-themed character out there.

I think the only thing off about the first one is the pants -- too yellow. I agree that you should try tan/beige.

I don't think the darker colors are an issue. Bright primaries come off as too modern in CoH -- I think darker tones evoke a late pulp/early comics feel.

Excellent work, PB...I like it a lot.

First one - not too keen on the head, and I have to agree... yellow pants? Go with a very l ight grey (I almost never use the last white.)

Second one - does feel more "vintage" to me. Not sure about the belt, but he looks like he'd be right at home during, oh, the 30s-50s.

I also think the 2nd version is too far removed from the original more "classic" looking idea. I wasn't bothered by the hood, but what I did for my heroine (namesake) was use the blank eye-plates to give it sort of that huge "spidey" eye look.

I'm actually thrown off by the blue which is your dominant color, so while the badge IS red, imho the blue is distracting...

Altogether your toon looks more like the flag of some foreign country... I would make the blues into dark navy or grey, and the yellow maybe white or tan. I like the chest symbol a lot and the toon concept/name is great. But isn't "red badge" connotative of a Russian Captain America kind of thing?

I really like where you're going with this outfit, and the star-on-shield looks really iconic.

I say keep the yellow pants, but make them a touch more gold, less green undertone. Keep the hood, but increase the contrast on the overlay mask (white maybe?) and try red boots. The pants and hood make it distinctive: without them the look is borderline bland. You could pave Atlas Park with vintage red, white and blue-ers.

Oh... God... I remember that book.

Here! I'll help you!

Bio:
'There was this guy, and he joined the WWII effort. However, he soon found out that working in the war was a horrible and maddening experience. He began to jumble up things, seeing simple tools as arms and legs! Faces began to morph and transform into unknown faces and... Limbs were everywhere in his mind! He couldn't take it anymore, so he fled back home out of the war, and locked himself in his house.

60 years later, the guy emerges from his house, wielding immense psychic power, apparently harbored from his mentally traumatizing experience in the war. Donning an absurdly stupid outfit, he takes up the name of... The Separate Peace!'

Uh, yeah. This was just made up on the spot.
