Wanted to shoot out an idea to make bases popular
It sounds like personalization is a much smaller issue than open accessibility. The current level of personalization for groups is unprecedented in an MMO.
So the simple solution would be to assign a physical door, and allowing bases to be public, also keep the portals for easy access.
but then everyone's going to be picking the 'sweet spot' doors near trams or stores or what not.
There's also the issue of a zone revamp(like adding Arenas, Universities, War Wall changes/new zones) removing your specified door, but then you just have to pick a new door.
But, there is great potential in allowing bases to be public, even adding entrance, teleportation, and auto-doc fees that translate to prestige.
Imagine a Taxibot bases in every zone, with teleporters to every other zone available.
Imagine radio stations hosting their own dance parties in their bases.
Imagine a Diner base set up like a...a...a Diner!
Imagine Holiday themed bases, Christmas towns, Halloween Towns, Arbor Day Towns!
More Mazes like the one on Test for Halloween!
Supergroups could set up 'Dojos' for new players, teaching them what powers do what, etc.
Maybe with inventions allow a store NPC to be added to a base, and put enhancements and such up for sale for prestige?
Maybe even allow open PVP in a base, then there could be UFC type base setups.(no NPCs in bases so no risk of debt)
Just a thought. currently bases allow easier transportation and insp & enh storage.
Storage also for salvage, but that's a circular arguement, need salvage to make items to put in the base to use salvage to make items....I get dizzy.
They could have so much more potential if they just existed somewhere other than in the purple column of energy.

It might be better to take the idea of personal storage out of the base system entirely... and add it to the Universities.
I mean, if you're going to be using the lab space there for inventions, why shouldn't you have a space to stockpile your private salvage and the results of your work? (Ironically, this would actually be somewhere where the idea of rent would make sense both in game concept and metagame justification.)
I'm not sure that private storage inside a group base is a solvable problem.

I agree. I'm not keen on building something personal yet overall, it's continued existence is still based upon the whims of one person(i.e. the creator of the SG). Adding to the Universities sounds like a nice idea.

I think most people would just like either
a: a personal storage locker in base
b: a personal storage locker in base

Too bad "Maturity" isn't an Enhanceable power.

More and more, I'm just convinced that any personal space, storage lockers, etc shouldn't be tied to the bases. Why should someone HAVE to be in SG just to have a space of their own? Even if they made it so your "room" followed you if you got booted from your SG, it would probably still require you to go join another SG to utilize it.
I get that SGs and bases should have some perks to membership. I'm fine with things like teleporters, salvage lockers, crafting stations, and all those kind of things being tied to bases. Just give me a place of my own where I can store my enhancements and inspirations and I'll be happy...for at least a couple days.

One of the best things the devs could do to make SG bases more popular is to create items for a Communications Center. By this I mean a small message board to post announcements and/or messages to members, a calendar to plan SG events, and a page for the leaders to create a SG handbook that details the various rules and guidelines of the SG (SG uniform, promotion requirements, storage bin use, etc).
This would get people visiting the SG base more often, and also provide a necessary but lacking tool for SGs. Ideally, there would be a button or something that blinked letting SG members know there is a new announcement or event planned. Additionally, it would be awesome to signify a particular announcement that has some urgency to it to be sent to all of the SG members by e-mail or have it pop up in the log in chat window right under Message of the Day.
In order to post, you'd have to have permission, but you'd also have to go to the SG base. Also, to read the SG handbook, calendar, etc. you'd have to go to the SG base as well.

Here's another idea...
I also have had trouble getting people to do things with the base. I've given them permission to edit it, but just as described by others, they don't touch it... for lots of reasons, but fundamentally it's because they don't want to bother with it. They, in fact, view it as a bother that they'd rather not deal with (and frankly, editing a base takes WAY TOO MUCH TIME because of the weird quirks of the base editor in placing and rearranging things in the base). So, what to do about that?
The idea of personal dorms in the SG base is ok, but as someone mentioned, it just sits there... does nothing. The final result being that those personal rooms would go unvisited and unused. How about this idea...
Instead of one player able to edit the entire base, why not make each room only creatable/editable by specific ATs? For example, the main plot would be editable only by the SG leaders. However, different rooms could only be edited by different ATs.
Control Room -- Controllers only can edit
Energy Room -- Blasters only can edit
Teleporter Rooms -- Scrappers only can edit
Medical Rooms -- Defenders only can edit
Defensive Rooms and Vaults -- only Tankers can edit
Work/storage Rooms -- any AT can edit
Decorative rooms -- any AT can edit
This would force at least 5 people, instead of only 1, to get involved in editing the base with some payoff. It would also make the base their own by vesting themselves in it a bit more than otherwise, and the SG badges that they'd earn would directly benefit the SG base as well.
If you don't like this idea, then how about allowing only certain ATs to place particular items, such as Defenders only allowed to create the Auto-Doc for the Med Bay, only Controllers allowed to create and place the Monitoring Station for the Control Room, etc?
Just a thought...

as interesting as that sounds, I think the end result would be 1 base editor hogging 5 roster spots in the SG.

Great minds think alike. Posi and I have been talking about this for awhile.
Here's the not so simple bit: the tech. But it's an interesting idea that we're wrangling at the moment.

Please do not forget personal housing besides SG bases. I do not want to start an SG -- it changes reward items percentages.

That statement about reward percentages is completely untrue. Joining a SG does nothing to your item drop percentages.
Just wanted to make sure that got stated here before someone locked this 6-month-dead thread you dragged up from the depths.

No, it doesn't. And I'm curious as to what you've read or heard that you've misinterpreted as something so silly.
Well maybe we need to reevaluate SG bases and what they mean.
What about an apartment building -where we could all have an apartment- most comic heroes maintain a residence. It would be small and allow storage room. You would pay a monthly influence fee.
SG are designed to allow players to work as teams, the one I'm in is very effective in that, they sponsor contest help people level and we have a base that the leader of sent out an email and asked for base development volunteers - i was the only one who responded.
There are plenty of good, *current* threads about this. (The whole Post-I9 series.) It'd probably be better to join in those than this long out of date thread.
