Quite possibly the strangest art question ever.

Uhm... >.< Anyone have a good way to clean a flatpanel monitor? Do I do it just like I would a conventional monitor? Or would that be "real bad"TM? I only really just noticed... but mine's got what I can only assume to be dirt on it... I never really noticed until I was coloring tonight and realized I couldn't tell what was a pencil mark and what was just dirty monitor >.<;

Any suggestions? <~.~>; Appreciate any help.

make sure it's off and use a windex wipe or some such. Should clean just fine.

Cool >.< I shall be doing that tomorrow morning then. Cause I'm trying to clean up my pencil lines for my current work and uhhh... yeah >.< its bad enough they're *VERY* light... until you color over them.

Frustrating because they usually just fade away when I color over em... not doing much different this time but I guess its "enough" <x.x>

Wait!

Is it a CRT monitor, or an LCD of some sort?

This is a VITALLY important question, as you should NOT use anything with alcohol or ammonia on an LCD screen (Unless it's glass fronted, which is somewhat rare).

If it's a plastic LCD screen go down to Staples or Office Depot or whatever and look for laptop monitor cleaner. If it doesn't say it's safe for laptop screens DO NOT USE IT.

Anything with ammonia, alcohol, and a few other chemicals will slowly eat away your screen cover!

Excellent point that I forgot to consider. If it is indeed a flatpanel, you must use an LCD specific cleaning cloth or else this will indeed happen.

Sorry -- shouldn't post while on pain killers.

Yes, do NOT use Windex if it's a flat panel!!

When in doubt, the best thing you can use is a slightly damp VERY soft napkin, tissue, or towel. You don't want to use anything abrasive, or like others said with alcohol or things in it. VERRRY bad. You may be able to use it once or twice or even ten times with no noticable effect, but it IS bad!

The -BEST- thing you can do is go to store and pick up those little LCD cleaning packs. They said they are -specific- for LCD's, laptops, etc. And usually comes with a 'wet' cloth and a 'dry' cloth, usually in those little wet-nap type packages.

I would strongly advise against any cleaning chemicals; something untested could damage or leave residue on your screen. (you know that rainbow oily swirls)

Just turn the monitor off. then take a hot washcloth wring it out good so its not dripping wet, but it is hot/warm moist. wipe down the screen don't be afraid of applying pressure if there is something on the screen.

Screen should have trances of water but not running down the screen. Take a dry soft towel dry off the screen or paper towel. Make sure there is no water in the seems where the monitor screen meets the front monitor panel.

I suggest getting a can of compressed air for periodic blow-offs.

Aza! Was looking around for an update from you the other day. You usually do the WIP on your photo manipulations and we'd not seen one in a while.

Hi Shautru, I have not done any others. I started one but grew frustrated with it and took a break. Since then I have been busy with RL work and went back to my first love FFXI. As soon as I can finish my project at work I can get back to photomaniping. (lol there has to be a better name or term for this...) Anyway I can post some updates on the one I started tonight or tomorrow.

Ah, can understand getting busy in RL and getting frustrated. I just thought they were really neat and unique.

I am soooooo glad I'm lazy <'x'> I was gonna clean it last night... but I was like "eh, I'll wait" <'x'> lo and behold...

Yeah its definitely a flat panel >.> not a CRT

They make alcohol and ammonia free spray cleaner formulations specifically for LCD/laptop screens... If you go to an office supply store or someplace like best buy or crapusa you can generally find some. Use that and a microfiber cloth and you're in business.

just dampen a cloth rag with some luke warm water...

DONT SOAK IT to the point it's dripping water everywhere though

keep it damp enough to provide some 'cleaning power' to get the grime off, but dry enough that it wont let water run/drip down the screen.

water on the cloth first, then wipe it off ...not the monitor first :P

I will repeat what Rowr said. Get a cleaning kit from the store. It only will cost about 10 bucks and it is the best and safest way to keep your LCD or CRT clean and protected and non-streaky.

Endust For Electronics.

I use it on my laptop. Works fine.

Thanks for this information. I wanted to know how to clean my LCD monitor as well.

Just get a can of Endust Electronics spray cleaner. It's safe to use on LCDs, I've been using it for years and it's never damaged a screen. For best results use a soft paper towel, not the quilted kind.

I use the same cloth I use to clean my sunglasses.

Works for me.
