My First Tablet

Sometimes that happens to me, in photoshop, where for some reason it forgets about the eraser side and forgets about the pressure sensitivity. I usually have to restart photoshop to get it back.

We're always kind here, someone once told me... Huh, wonder who that was?

Anyway, very nice!

I've not ever touched a tablet, but I'm positive that I will suck about fortybajillion times more than that if I ever do.

(Quick definition of fortybajillion, and indeed all numbers reaching into the bajillions - an indistinct set of numerals which implies an illogically large or complex number, especially in terms of SL sucking.)

Do some more!

Glad I could help (if not spell). I have occasional problems with ps not recognising the pressure sesativity of my tablet, and needs rebooting.

That is a very nice start. We told you that the learning curve is a little steep but worth it.

Don't worry, you'll get used to it and wonder how you ever worked with a mouse.

Seriously, it's just a new tool that you have to find your sweet spot with.

It took me a bit to get used to mine as well. Five years later my 9x12 is still going strong. (woo and I have an intuous 1 here :P ) Oh but I do want an intuous 3 6x8 very much so...

Ah, the eraser end thing is simple... It's just a preset... If you have it flipped to the eraser side and choose a different tool, it will keep that new tool selection for the eraser side.

Just flip to the eraser side, and pick the eraser tool from the toolbar, clicking it with the eraser end of the stylus, and you're all set.

Also, I don't have a cintiq, I'm not that rich. I just have a tablet PC, which I managed to rationalize because I had to buy a new computer anyway.

I feel your pain. I picked up a Wacom Sapphire about a year ago and never have gotten used to the thing. I just can't wrap my brain around figuring out where the stylus is going to end up on the screen when it touches down.

You must learn the fine art of the 'hover'!! There's a small 'zone' above the surface of the tablet where the cursor will track to the stylus without activating line drawing goodness. Do like what someone suggested earlier, moving your finger down so it's just below the pen tip, so your finger can touch the surface without the pen tip actually touching, so you can get used to it.

OOooo Celsia, that works GREAT!!!! I've also started positioning the tip with the eraser, then holding the space with my finger and putting the drawing point down XD

But after HOURS AND HOURS of work, I managed to color in a verrry simple little drawing. Be kind

That looks great! Stick with it and you'll never go back to the "brick on a string".

A way to combat your positioning problem - I always draw with fingers hovering over CTRL & Z keys to wipe aways any stray shots as soon as I see them.

BTW, Painter Classic is a very nice program. I got familiar with Painter and my tablet through a great "Parrots tutorial" at www.msnusers.com/DigitalArtBoard (I hope the address is right - they blocked it years ago here at work). Fred gives lots of great tips in this tutorial, and it takes just a couple hours.

Oh good grief. That works great! Shows how quickly I gave up on the tablet if I haven't figured that out on my own after a year. Each time I'd convince myself to give it another try, I'd give up again after fighting with the positioning. Thanks.

Damn Star that looks awesome. Glad to see the tablet is starting to workout.

Try this star, on one layer make a thick edged rectangle, say 5-10 pixels wide for the outer line. This is so your brain registers a work space and not the blank page of dooooom.

Then make a new layer over that, and draw something primarily in the rectangle. It's okay if you go a little bit outside the rectangle, but try to stay in as much as you can.

Think of it like those penmanship books, except instead of writing letters or numbers, you're making certain kinds of lines. Also try writing your signature with your whole arm on a blank page, then compare that to just using your wrist and fingers to writing it inside the rectange. You should see a huge difference.

Hope that helps.

The tablet I have is not a Wacom Sapphire but a Calcomp DrawingBoard so what I am going to say might not apply

At first I had an awful time trying to draw with it. The one day I did an experiment

I took a small plate and using it drew a circle. On my screen I had a big flattened oval.

There was a utility with wich to calibrate it so I used it. Immediatly it worked better.

Also I have found the the positioning of the board is very impostant. For me it has to be in front of my screen and square to it. Wich is very different then what I do with a sheet of paper. Otherwise my brain seems unable to relate the directions and positions properly.

I have no clue if it helps but just in case.....

Well with a little experimentation and a LOT of adjusting, I got the sensitivity on Dammit the Graphire Tablet turned down and adjusted the screen size to roughly what my canvas is (for some strange reason, though, no matter how far I drag it down it cuts it off about a centimeter from the bottom of the screen).

Cutting down the sensitivity helped a LOT. I'm learning to love the tablet, I suppose....

I'm still not changing its name though. It's on probation. Much thanks for all the tips and suggestions. I'm glad I'm not crazy XD (Well...not regarding the tablet at any rate)

I did another experiment and I think I'm starting to get the hang of things. Maybe I'll start doing CoH chibis with it soon. I'm LOVING photoshop. Maybe I'll run around in painter a bit later.

I agree with Arcaine. Chibis is your thing.
