Okay, I seem to find none of my problems on here that relates close enough so here goes. I can load the game fine and all that but when I get to the character selection screen it doesn't load up any images of my character. Then when I go to a game area I see nothing but grey everywhere and names of other characters floating all around the place. Can someone please help me out?

Ya, already tried this and the updater still doesn't connects.
Any other possibles solutions?
Surprised this wasn't in here before:
To bypass the updater, create a shortcut to CityOfHeroes.exe (not the updater). Right click the shortcut and click Properties. In the Target line, modify it to match this:
"C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CityOfHeroes.exe" -project coh

none of these work. i get a checksum error over and over
lets have an ftp downloadable .exe
Has anyone tried altering the HOSTS file to reflect the different IP addresses associated with the cohupdater.coh.com?
Since the HOSTS file is looked at first, before a DNS query is done, it is always available to your system.

"Ports Being Blocked
What do you mean my ports are blocked? I feel fine...
TCP and UDP port blocking has been instituted on several university and college campuses, and in some business organizations -- as a means of controlling malware, viruses, trojans, worms, hack attacks et cetera.
For City Of Heroes to run smoothly, we have been advised that the following ports need to be open:
TCP: 6994, 2104, 2106
UDP: 7000-7100
If you are not able to change the settings on your machine, please see check your firewall documentation for more information. Personal Routers may also have firewalls enabled so you may also have to check the documentation for this hardware as well.
If you are connected at a business or campus, please check with your network administrator to determine if these ports can be opened on your system or on a firewall (or both)."
How do you unblock ports? I'm a bit of a noob.
For some reason, when ever I go and make the CoH file not Read Only it doesnt stay that way when I launch the program. I have no clue why.

Depends what firewalls/routers you're behind. If you're on a university network and they're blocking those ports, you're probably stuck. On your router, go to your router's web interface and there should be a way (probably several) to open ports, e.g. a Firewall page or something. If your router's DHCP is on (your computer has a 192.168.x.x address) you need to give it a static IP so you can unblock the ports for your computer's specific IP.
For Windows firewall, just go to the windows firewall settings (from control panel), go to the exceptions tab, and add ports to unblock. Tedious for ranges of ports, and I've found not doing this doesn't affect the ability to use the port...in fact it's seemed to make it more difficult
Other software firewalls, I can't help you with.
Thx a lot. Ill try that right now!
my game will not go pass the loading screen for mercy island wat should i do if it dont work i waisted 30 $$ for minutesT_T.
plz help me.
I have this same problem, i have run on safe mode
Opening ports is not going to help you with performance issues, rofl sorry but thats funny. If his ports were not already open he probably wouldnt even get passed the updater. From using a packet sniffer/network scanning utility, I have seen that the updater uses TCP port 6994 (2104, 2106 are unanalyzed, but probably used for logins, zones and loads, since its a connection oriented protocol; TCP guarantees delivery of data and also guarantees that packets will be delivered in the same order in which they were sent.). UDP ports: 7000-7100 are used for game play, because UDP is a connectionless protocol, it has less overhead than TCP, but does not guarantee reliable communication. The game itself must process any errors and check for reliable delivery.
As for your performance hit with I7....your not alone! Pixels, shaders, polygons you name it, all of which have been updated allowing for more eye candy in place of performance. Turn down the graphics options (Details), and most importantly, crank down particle effects; especially if your playing with anyone who uses a fire set.
But the easiest thing to do is turn off advanced graphics options, slide the bar to minimum, re-enable advanced graphics options, turn down particle effects to no more then 2000, and tweak the eye candy upwards from there.

In some instances, the issues you may be experiencing with the game are a result of failed connections along the way to the servers and not simply a problem on your machine.
The following tools can be downloaded and run to test the stability of your routing/connection to the various CoH servers.
<ul type="square">[*] Windows 2000 and XP - ftp://ftp.coh.com/support_tool/netinfotool_XP2k.exe [*] Windows 98 and Millenium - ftp://ftp.coh.com/support_tool/netinfotool_98me.exe[/LIST]

I apologize for not reading the thread more to see if this has been mentioned, but this post needs to be edited with the new information. The tools are no longer at those links, there is a singular tool in the support_tool directory ftp://ftp.coh.com/support_tool. Some details about how long it takes to run and the output would also be helpful to most non tech people.
Thanks!
Ebon
I have done everything that has been listed in this thread and it hasn't worked.
After receiving the most recent patch, the game stuck at the "Loading..." bar and didn't even bring up the game.
I uninstalled the game and reinstalled the default from my CDs and I started the game, bypassing the CoH Updater, and voila... it went passed the "Loading..." bar and into the Login screen. When I attempted to log in, it said that there was a wrong protocol and to get the most recent version of the game.
I downloaded the patch again and updated.
And it's stuck at the "Loading..." bar again.
This isn't a ports issue. This isn't a driver issue. I have everything updated. I have absolutely nothing other than primary system functions running in the background. If I can get to the login screen with the default game, but I can't even get past the "Loading..." bar with the recent update, then there is something involved with the most recent patch or two that is causing this to occur.
OK, if all you get is a little blue or red (CoH or CoV) loading bar then my guess is a video card/driver related issue. Please post your DxDiag for all to review, instructions below.

e-mailing support@coh.com no longer does anything and the link for CoH Support Web no longer works.
Just making sure this thread doesn't go bye-bye with the Great Purge coming on Monday.
The guide could use a little updating, though. Or maybe it would be best to get Vista out the door then do an update? Or maybe update this one now and make a Vista version later? Or is Vista going to be that different with respect to CoX?

here are instructions to connect with other patch servers. Your speeds may increase when connecting to another patch server.
Please perform the following steps.
Click Start > Run
Type- cmd
Hit OK
Type- nslookup cohupdate.coh.com
Hit Enter
This will provide a list of IP addresses at the bottom.
Browse to your City of Heroes folder.
Right-click cohupdater.exe and choose Create Shortcut
Right-click the new shortcut and click Properties
The target line will say something similar to-
"C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.exe"
Modify that to say-
For example: "C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.exe" -ps 64.154.197.13
Enter one of the ip addresses from the nslookup at a time. Please try using this shortcut to start the updater with each of the IPs listed. Let us know if any of the addresses help the issue.
