The Paragon Times Freelance Journalists Wanted!

“Do you have a knack for digging up topical news and creating insightful features? Are you a talented “photographer” with a nose for action and an eye for detail? Do you have a passion for reporting on the events, small and large, that affect this great city?

Paragon City is a vibrant, modern metropolis at a crossroads—rife with conflict, heroism and mind-boggling action. If there are eight million stories in the “Naked City,” Paragon City has at least twenty million. To capture the heartbeat, the life’s blood, the sheer heroic soul of this magnificent city, the Paragon Times needs the very best journalists.

We need you! Paragon City needs you!

Every month we will be putting an issue of the Paragon Times newspaper in the comic book, and we want you—the community—to contribute “journalistic” work to its pages. Now you can be both a super-powered hero and a city reporter!

What are we looking for?

Imagine you are a staffer for a large and prestigious newspaper in a city filled with history, constant action, interesting people and places; the potential for “news” is limited only by your imagination. Have you come across an exceptional hero or team? Write an interview. The Circle of Thorns seen outside their normal haunts—track down the facts and write up a news item. Love the architecture in Atlas Park? Do a feature about the various monuments and the history behind them. Have a love of history? Dive into the back-story and come up with a historical piece about the city or an event. Ever wonder what the citizens of Paragon really think about heroes, villains, or city hall? Let them speak out in op-ed pieces.

Be creative! Be serious! Be humorous! Have fun!

The articles should be concise and written in a journalistic style. Pick up your local paper to get a good idea of how to write a news item or article. The main topics we’d like to see are:

• News reflecting current in-game events or content. Here are some examples: “Need for Air Traffic Control Above the City”; “Rikti Crash Site Mystery”; “Task Force Mission Disaster!”; “Who are the Malta Group?”

• Hero/team spotlights (interviews)

• Crime reports/Villain group articles (“5th Column Moving into CoT Territory?”)

• Features on interesting areas (zones)—think “travel section” material with screenshots

• “NPC” interviews or op-eds

• “Flashback” pieces about past city events (based on available back-stories)

• “Photo-essays” featuring events, areas, or history

Do you have a great idea for a piece? We’re open to suggestions!

The Paragon Times Submission Guidelines:

General news items should be short, no more than 300 words in length, with appropriate screenshots (no more than 3) if available. Interviews and features should be no longer than 500 words. NPC interviews or op-eds should be between 100 and 150 words. Photo-essays should include no more than 4 screenshots in jpg or tiff formats with appropriate captions. The deadline for any specific issue is the 15th of each month.

Selected work may appear under your real name or an appropriate “journalistic” pseudonym. Written submissions will be accepted only in .doc/.txt formats. All submissions, questions and queries should be emailed to cohsubmissions@plaync.com. Please put “Community News Article” in the subject line.

Good luck! We’re looking forward to seeing your contributions!

This is longer than that but I think it would be a great thing to do in every comic book so people can seem more interested in different villain groups and want some different villains instead of the old ones. This could also be some of the groups you use in later issues. So without further adue, I present "Unknown Villain Groups of the Past"!

Imagine. It’s nightfall. Everyone has gone home but you. You finally leave your office at Hotel Geneva and head for home. While your back is turned some Freakshow pop out of no where and start attacking you. You scream and scream but no one comes. Then, out of the night you see a phantom coming toward you. Then another. The you see a whole phantom army attacking the Freakshow. You are lying on the ground afraid to look up for you think it is a Carnie group. When you finally look up you see the face of Mesmorizer. You thank him for his duty and run along merrily home to your wife and kids. This is not a scene that would have happened a few years back.
Brett Rushing loved to do bad things. He was one of those “bad seeds” that didn’t get anything for Christmas ever. He joined the Hellions at an age of 13, the youngest member to ever be picked to join. He never liked fire and knew it wasn’t his kind of place so when he got to be 14 he left the Hellions to join the Outcasts. You never fit in with the Outcasts because you had no powers so he decided to join the Trolls just a few days after joining the Outcasts. This is where he got his green body. He figured out how to revert back to normal and quit the Trolls but a little bit of green is still in him. When he was 20 he joined Crey and they taught him how to heal. He was the only Medic boss. When he got tired of Crey the Carnies asked him to join them in their quest for world domination. When he said okay, the world was doomed. He was their main Illusionist. He learned all about phantoms and spectral things. When he went off on his own he destroyed. All villain groups feared him. He was his own villain group. The Mesmorizations. They were the deadliest crew ever to hit Paragon City. When the main Heroes found out about this(you call them the Devs) they attacked. But in the end, they were too weak. But one hero was sick with the flu that day and didn’t go help fight the nemesis of a problem. CuppaJo was in her bed that morning and she flipped on the news. She saw what was going on and teleported herself to an unknown island off the coast of “Dark” Astoria. She gathered everyone there. Every hero ever know was ready to fight. As the Mesmorizations were destroying Eastgate, they were making a plan. Overbrook became Faultline that day. Eastgate became the Hollows(yeah I know you thought it was the Trolls but it wasn’t). The heroes had their plan. Cuppa rounded them all up on a team and teleported everyone to Atlas Park. Within a matter of day Atlas Park was the first place to be liberated from the Mesmorizations. Nothing but rubble was left. As people started rebuilding Atlas, they struck in Galaxy City. A month later it was the second place to be liberated. Kings Row was liberated a few days later and so was Eastgate. It was in total destruction and there was no way of fixing it. The next place they liberated was Steel Canyon. It was a tough battle but they did it. Heroes who had been level 1 before this were already up to level 29. More and more heroes kept getting out of bed to help with the threat. When Skyway City and Overbrook were liberated, Mesmorizer sent reinforcements to the next target of the heroes. Independence Port, the biggest of all the places fell after a year of fighting. A few months later, Crey’s Folly and Brickstown were liberated meaning that Mesmorist would have a place to go instead of being killed and thrown off the side of the big fault in Faultline. When they liberated Talos Island it was over. They easily took Founders’ Falls and “Eden”. Perigrine Island was taken a day later and while Mesmorizer ran for freedom in the ocean, he tripped and fell down into “Monkey Island”. He was caught easily. He was then sentenced to death and was stuck in Brickstown Prison.
While waiting on death row a Sunday School teacher named David Smith came and talked to him. He helped him get his life back on track. Mesmorizer cried a river when they put down the death trial and put him to life in prison. He was one of the happiest men on Earth. By experiencing the grace of God he was able to make his life better. When they lowered his punishment down to ten years in prison he began a ritual. His ritual was to go to church each Sunday and learn about the will of God. When Mesmorizer was released he became a hero. The Devs that were defeated are known to have made the group the Pratorians. He is now level 31 as a hero and loves his job. But don’t make a mistake and give the world a death wish. You’ll never know when Mesmorizer will strike terror into the eyes of young ones ever again.

as a former broadcasting major allow me to give a few tips on Journalistic writing....

The inverted Pyramid. Most newspaper stories use the inverted pyramid as the style of chouce. It's a simple form really, all you do is say what the story is about in the first sentence. example

Liberty City, Famed rockstar Luptonius robbed a bank in front of Atlas Park yesterday afternoon.

Thats a good opener. Also notice what I did with the beginning. If it is not mentioned in the first sentence always begin with the name of the place this is happening. Now that sentence up there, that was the hardest part of this whole thing.

Next you put the details of the story in decending order of most important to least. Paragraphs are short and choppy at best, but this is news format. Allow me to write a wuick Piece on my first mayhem mission. I don't remember the hero who I bear so I just made the name up.

Rock Star Robs Bank

Liberty City, Famed rockstar Luptonius robbed a bank in Steel Canyon yesterday afternoon. Authorities were perplexed as the musician trashed three square blocks in his mad dash to the bank, leaving over ten-thousand dollars in property damage, and leaving famed heroine Rose Thorn in a coma.

"I don't know why he attacked me," said Bob Golfrey, a 23 year old stock broker who was out for an afternoon walk, "I only wanted his autograph."

Luptonius' most recent album, the self titled, Live From Hell has recently gone platnum. His single Red Rum With a Chainsaw has been numbar one on the Rock charts for the past 8 weeks.

See how that works?

I think and hope so; I'm intending to have Ray "Specs" Smith submit another article at some point.

As soon as I get some inspiration, I might write some in-character letters to the editor from Commander Cybrus...

I might find something to write about as a journalist too. I have some amazing writing skills and a crazy sense of humour...

About how long should "letters to the editor" and other things such as that be?

hmmm..this looks like some training for me. the small town newspapers, every writer starts there. I'll get on it ASAP! Right after dinner maybe. Never write on an empty stomach.
