I couldn't agree more about the help menu needing... help. I'm all about the game being approachable for beginners. I've pushed Tog's Newbie Academy onto new players and friends, and Paragon Wiki of course. The recently added /help command is a good thing for players migrating from other MMOGs.
It seems to me that many of those who would benefit most from an improved help menu are the same folks who wouldn't look to sources outside the game itself (e.g. the forums) for info that often, if at all. Hence such a 3rd party app wouldn't quite fulfill its desired purpose -- the people needing better help not being aware of any other option, let alone being aware of said need in the first place. Put another way - a rich, accurate in-game help system would minimize any reasons for looking to outside sources.
That said, it would be great if the help system did get a tune-up, either by a developer revamp, or as an indirect result of the efforts of Fleeting Whisper, et al.
Good luck. I would love to lend a hand. This kind of project is about the worst kind of thing for myself to get involved in as I would tend to go all OCPD on it. (Even a post like this can take most of my free time to write.) Then comes the wife-aggro, which I really don't need if I haven't even earned it through actually playing the game.

I got it! Yay! (For those that don't, where do you think "Able to leap tall buildings with a single bound!" came from?).
[/ QUOTE ]
I assumed thats what it was referencing but how is that a geek point when the theme says so.
[/ QUOTE ]
Actually he was probably referencing the fact that when Superman debuted in the comics (and for a long time after) flight was not a power of his. Only the ability to "leap tall buildings with a single bound".
Then again, i could be wrong...about the reference, not the ability.
[/ QUOTE ]
And the source of his strength, including the leaps, was the much higher gravity his race was accustomed to.

My nanotech heroes are all Tech - why should it be Science?

The line of differentiation that I use is this:
Using technology: Tech Origin.
Having Technology fundamentally alter you: Science.
Which one you want to use for your guys is up to you.
[/ QUOTE ]Actually, if you notice, nanites seem to be tech enhancements - So in game, nanites are primarily tech.

Actually, what I was trying to argue is that the nanites, while floating in your bloodstream or wherever, haven't fundamentally altered you, therefore: Tech. With my namesake character, it's a virus that has altered his very cellular structure, therefore: Science.

They're much easier to get in a large group, since you won't have to compete for defeats counted. -
[ QUOTE ]
A group of 20 people, even groups of as few as 8 (one full team), will spawn as many Rikti and Rikti Heavy Assault Units as any reasonable human being could ask for, yet every time there is a raid in, say, Talos, everybody in the Zone clusters around the train station because there are so many irrationally greedy ADD-afflicted yahoos who "Gotta Catch 'Em All" as fast as they possibly can.
I have been in a Raid zone with five teammates, stayed far away from the Herd-of-Sheep-Clusters of such players and we've gotten the Elusive Mind accolade in three raids with no lag.
[/ QUOTE ]
That's useful info, thanks. Can you clear one thing up for me? Did your team of 6 get the accolade in just three zones, or three full raid-cycles? -
yeah, couldn't help it. He painted "PUSH ME" on his buttons - you know, the ones we refer to when we say "don't push my buttons" - and darned if my finger doesn't have a PUSH ME magnet attached to it. Anyway, my post was supposed to be all in good fun... mostly.

Just found this awesome thread a couple days ago. I thought of one that doesn't seem to have been mentioned.
Did you know that the recharge for Rest used to be much longer? Not sure, but 1000 seconds sounds about right. Currently it's 180 secs. This influenced the following:
- Many players will use an awaken while the team is still fighting, do a "Combat Rest", and jump back in. Back then you would rarely see such behavior because the use of your "omg power" was a perceived risk for little benefit (And the awakens didn't grant debt protection, but that's another [u]Did you know[u]).
- Team captains would say "hold on. END rest" every few fights, and that meant everyone stands around for a minute while the blue bars refill.
- Greens were gold. Presently most of my characters eat the greens to make room for more drops.
- You would never see someone use Rest between fights unless they were fairly low on health, had no method of healing, and the mission was halfway finished or more.
- Back then there was a bit more reason to sympathize (empathize?) with the "we need a healer" folks that I *rolls eyes* at nowadays.
It's weird how in some ways it feels like a different game due to a minor change to a no frills level 2 inherent power. (Though, in all honesty, I hadn't played the game a great deal before this change, so others may remember these nuances differently.) -
<qr>
I fully understand that some are bored with this event. But there are others that play many, many less hours who aren't quite tired out yet. -Something to think about. And it's still optional content that can be ignored - except for the [Admin]: spam.Edit: and soon we won't even have to deal with that anymore.
And for those who've lost sight of the "objective" of this event:
You've made Paragon your hometown and every day you make it your job to keep the peace and protect people from harm and such. Or you're tooling around the Isles trying to make a name for yourself and keep less worthy villainous factions under your thumb. Now these punks that we thought, or at least hoped, that we already took care of are back! And they seem to be very intent on their goal. They think we're just going to stand around and let them have their way in our hometown?! And then the planet? Hell no!
So really, where's the confusion?
Point is, this [u]game[u], and almost any game really, would "fall on its face" if you just had objectives but no motives. Where do the motives come from in most games? Story and/or Setting.
(I can see why it would be great if a game existed that has everything I want and nothing that I don't want. For this reason I don't read very much "pure" fiction - it's all made up in someone else's head - no way for me to directly relate to it. At least in many fictional games though, you do have some control over your world: who your character is and how they react to their environment. But as for that perfect me game...? It's sad that it even has to be said: "Wake up!")
Edit: It's also my understanding that this event is all the more interesting once you do the Vanguard stuff so invasions get you merits, and especially Lady Grey's TF and take the time to at least skim the texts/clues as you go. Otherwise, again, it's just a string of objectives - how interesting can that be? -

Sweet! My 2 main heroes just got more fun. AR Blaster and a Burn Tank. (sorry Burn Brutes and Doms
'tis two of my favorite ATs right thar)
-
An update would be nice Dwimble, so I can direct new players and others who are in need of this knowledge here, with everything they need to know being in the first post.
Also, it surprises me to see that the moving-jumping-behind-wall-while-blast-fires-off pull isn't more globally known. I started doing this very early in my first hero's career as soon as I noticed that shots can go thru walls. This is made even more useful depending on the powerset. For example, I was AR. There's no non-instant attacks that can be used for ST pulling, and the weapon draw helps make sure that you are well out of sight by the time that shot goes off.
An above poster mentioned that enemies aggro instantly if the attack is a miss. I've confirmed that this occurs the instant the weapon draw or attack animation starts. (So as a side note, if you think you might miss, have your weapon drawn before you click the attack.) This early-miss-aggro aspect of the AI should definitely be mentioned in any future updates to your guide, I think. Anyway, thanks for a great read. -

I've always used this as a pulling guide. I think it explains things a bit better personally.
[/ QUOTE ]Come in just to link to a competing (so to speak) guide? Poor netiquette aside, at least make sure the info you're linking to isn't outdated. If people believe your post, as some surely will, then they will go to that link and get false ideas about Teleport Foe and Taunt, specifically. It's posts like yours that help propagate noobishness in an online community. I'm not trying to offend, only educate. "And knowing is half the battle." *grins with thumb up* -

eh. What's he gonna do with influence anyway? Get some SOs? Stock up on Lucks and Awakens? -
[ QUOTE ]
The problem is that the game is not made for our powers to scale down when in teams, and rightfully so. Why join a team with another Electric blaster if it means both of you now drain less for "balance"? So they have 1 formula for each attack, teamed or not, so they must consider what a big team of that powerset could do. This can unfortunately make a char a weaker solo'er though.

Cool. That's a method I hadn't thought of. So, if I have this correctly, you looked at the generated results in their entirety, and came up with a best-fit aggregate of AT/Powers/Origin/Travel. Well played!
A reminder: This guide has a useful update about 15 posts in if you didn't get a chance to look at it.
It's nice that now (with I8) it's much easier for villains and heroes to forego a travel power and just xemp/mal down for the mayhem/safeguard missions for the fly and/or jump temp powers as needed. All of that making the idea in this guide more practicable.
I plan on revamping and altering this guide someday, hopefully soon. But here's a preview:
The ideas in this current guide will get recompiled of course. But I've discovered that my main method for specific power selection while leveling a randomite(tm) isn't as much fun as I would have hoped, due to being too random. (I know, wasn't that the point?) I have a new one. The meat of the idea is that from lvl 6 on, you *always* pick at least 3 powers you're interested in, and randomly choose between them. So if you're interested in a particular travel or upper tier pool power, you would start "rolling" for its prereq early. It's not complete, at this point I think at least two choices from lvls 1-4, three from 6-30, back down to 2 from 32-38 and maybe all the way thru 47, and then a final solid choice at 49. So at 41 you might be choosing between specific powers within 2 seperate ancillary pools, or between the first 2 of a chosen pool, player's choice.

*peeks up* Ah, I see your confusion. What I meant was, Archery's snipe does very low damage for a power of its kind. With the interrupt inside it, for a lot of people its not worth even using situationally.
[/ QUOTE ]
Dude, it's rated with the exact same base damage as all the other snipes- AR, En, El, and even Fire's if you don't count the minor DoT tacked on to it. (Not the most preferrable type of damage, but that's the nature of the set) -

A while back, [yada yada...]
[/ QUOTE ] Boy is that an understatement. I remember hearing this since I started playing pre-I4. At the time the word was:
[paraphrase] We need to get the melee sets balanced out first to establish a baseline, then balance the Defender AT, then give the Trollers some love (I assume this was Containment), and then we'll look at Blaster issues. [/paraphrase]
ps. Yes, I did see Castle's post. I'm not having negative feelings, just recalling our past.
