It replaces the last set, they all effectively die as soon as you lay a new patch down and then it spawns new creepers. Not a bad thing to have it recharging often, dumping a new patch on a fresh spawn is an instant way to have a lot more creepers out than waiting for a following set slowly letting them out, but be careful doing it mid spawn because any agro on creepers spawned from the old patch will drop straight onto you
-
I don't really feel the need for vines or spore burst, seeds is on such a quick recharge and with fly trap and creepers stealing agro if needed for the short recharge and good maneuvering it's only rarely I die because of extra agro, and then mostly because of me not concentrating rather than a lack of powers to deal with it
worst comes to worst I can always take the alpha and nuke a spawn with no control, shes tough enough to do that even without the shield.
Melt armour isn't much granted but it's something I can fit into my chain against hard targets if I'm on a debuff weak team to bolster things up, not a use every spawn power but I feel I'll get more mileage out of it than vines -
Quote:I looked at straight damage because thats what the arguments about. Then you go on to look at straight damage from a set and not the performance of the combo ? Well done.
Your case is blasters won't be wanted by a team because other ATs can do damage, the example you used was corruptors because they also have ranged damage. Generaly a team is going to have a mixed make up, especialy for the high end TFs, a debuffer is almost a given, you want one to be able to take down hard targets, so almost any team a blaster is on is going to have a debuffer who is going to increase everyones damage output, slow regneration, etc. so you can lay debuff aside, everyone gets the benefit from those
now who is going to be doing more damage:
the blaster with a constant attack chain, uniterrupted by buffing/debuffing/healing, higher base damage, and because of that higher base damage more effective use of buffs to damage which bypass ED (i.e. set bonuses, alpha musculature, aim, BU, red insps, buffs from the team, hero alignment power)
If both get buffed to the damage cap, and the target is debuffed to hell the blaster is going to doing a lot more damage, and won't even need to interrupt his chain for aim + build up.
The only problem a blaster has is competing against so many damage ATs (Brutes, stalkers, dominators, soilders, widows, scrappers, some controllers) but even then I'd still pick a blaster over most of them because they are more consistant and are probably the easiest to play well.
Corruptors do not directly compete with blasters for spots on teams, although they have the same primary sets they are miles apart, they may have similar damage levels solo due to corruptors being a force multiplier (generaly, obviously not all corr secondaries work well solo) but blasters do a shed load more straight damage. -
you know I think AFs right here, I mean all corruptors get those debuffs regardless of secondary right? and all blasters combos have BU+aim right?
oh wait a minute
I admit that corruptors may get a bit more of a boost from going with a damage alpha in looking at the statistics from a purely percentage based view point but the actual extra damage per attack has gone up way more for a blaster than for a corruptor.
Your looking for a discrimination in the system which really isn't there, and trying to bend the statistics to back up your point, but heres some plain numbers to show your wrong
(assuming ~13% boost from uncommon musculature to already ED capped for damage power)
Dual wield for blasters - 82.58 base damage = 10.74 extra damage
Dual wield for corruptors - 55.05 base damage = 7.16 extra damage
thats over a 25% more extra damage the blaster has gained per attack than the corruptor! I know who I'd be picking if I wanted extra damage on my team. If I wanted extra control on my team then I'd pick the corr.... oh wait no, the blaster has more control options than the (non dark) corruptor. Now if I wanted a debuffer/buffer/healer with some pretty good damage on the team then I'd pick a corruptor over a blaster -
I have to volunteer energy/kinetics corruptor for this, both great sets individualy, but they have anti-synergy together. Nothing like KBing something, running after him to heal off him to have him get up and get a good melee shot in while your animating your next bit of KB
that saying I'm perservering because I love the character, she's now 36 and coming back over hero side, so I may get her to 50 one day -
plant/fire/fire dom is fantastic for AoE, and once you get perma dom it's capable of farming almost anything fast in almost perfect safety with a almost perma 85% buff to all your fire damage, fast recharging AoEs and constant AoE damage from creepers it's awesome.
Also it's real set defining power (seeds of confusion) comes early (level 8) and once you've got it slotted you can pretty much power level yourself -
Okays after a little sleep and some playing around with the slotting heres what I came up with for my idea in the previous post

Quote:generally I work by hovering towards a group, hitting them with seeds, with the range widening the arc and the contagious confiousion effectively bypassing the target limit this leaves a whole spawn confused for the best part of 90 seconds and recharges in 16, their all too busy hitting each other to attack me, occasionaly 1 or 2 slip through but ST holds and the hold proc ir my AoE immob generally take care of them, but more often than not it's so little damage I wait till it builds up over 4-5 spawns and then drop a spirit tree while going into the next one to regen while I rip them to shreds. If I do go in and consume+combust it's mostly just for something different to hovering above them and decimating them with breath of fire/fireball.If you are going to go into the group to drop consume and combustion wouldn't you want some defense?
thinking of how often I use them I'm tempted to drop combustion (move the ragnarok into fireball, 5 slot it with the current ones in carrion creepers and the KD proc and move the posi's blast to creepers keeping the 5 piece in that as the damage procs already in there keeping my recharge bonuses the same but losing the 2-4 piece bonuses from armageddon) and fire shield and pick up rain of fire (5 slotted, probably frankenslotted with mostly posi blast and 1-2 recharge heavy IOs from other sets) and melt armour (4 slotted, not sure how I'd slot it yet, would have to look at the figures to see if I could fit an achilles proc in it)
I'd still keep consume for emergency use (getting hit by a sapper, being too near a carnie spawn when I fireball, getting carried away with end heavy powers and not noticing dom needs refreshing) but combustion is defintly expendable, as is fly (more so I don't have to bother keeping an eye on time left for her emergency use jet pack temp, SS is her main travel power), and fire shield could be dropped -

My main problem is what do I do with my alpha slot? I've got recharge/heal slotted at the moment, but my healing powers are.... well health and spirit tree, and the recharge is giving a tiny bit more overlap on perma hasten which is pointless, and a little bit faster recharge on my powers which aren't already heavily slotted for recharge, which are up often enough anyway. End reduction is really not needed, I don't even have any in hover, the only other toggle I have running in combat is fire shield, even with a AoE heavy attack chain I can't run dry before dom recycles, I only rarely use consume, and then only out of habit before I let off a combustion.
Accuracy, really not a problem - 78% global accuracy, and even avoiding accuracy from enhs my lowest for a power is ~48% so a minimum accuracy of 126%, I don't know if the -50% acc against a +4 is straight off that figure or you lose 50% of your total but either way misses are going to be unlucky rather than because of a lack of acc slotted. Then theres damage, this would give me that little bit extra but would it be enough to be noticable? 100% base damage + 95% enh + 85% fiery embrace +20.5% set bonuses = 300.5%, an extra 11% (maybe as much as 16% on some powers which are a little under the steep ED drop off) to 311.5% is not huge.
so the question is an extra tiny amount of recharge which would give me less embrace down time (currently 47 seconds recharge 30 second duration might shave another 2 seconds off...) or a flat 11% base damage increase which is an improvement on my current damage levels of about 3%... -
Quote:This is my philosophy at the moment, my one 50 blaster is nrg/nrg, he generally has no end issues and has a good ST and AoE attack chain, and thats on generic IOs, things are only going to improve when I put sets in him. Extra recharge would only serve to bring up nova, BU, aim, and hasten faster, the attacks don't matter because I'm more restricted by activation times than by the powers not being up when I need them. I have no problems with accuracy, and even avoiding it while making a build I ended up with nearly 70% global accuracy and ~50% on average in each power, even with the -50% for fighting +4s that should be pretty much at the cap.Personally going Spiritual on my two Blasters with crashless nukes (Archery and Dual Pistols) so their nukes get back up faster (and Aim or Build Up). Works like a charm for my Archer so far.
Still getting my Energy/Energy to 50, but once I do, he's actually going to go Musculature. He's going to have more than enough recharge for his regular attacks (via his IOs), so I'm mostly wanting him to hit even harder. Picked up Assault to take the concept even further.
So that leaves me with the damage, an extra 11% base damage with an uncommon (even though I have no immob or def debuff to boost) which is as good as a few extra damage set bonuses in my build. It may not be a lot, but it's something extra which would be more than most of the others
my dual pistols/devices though may be going in another direction, he's 46 at the moment and I'm going to have to look carefuly at his final build to decide what to go for, and may well be decided by what the best secondary boost I can get from an uncommon is -
So I finally respeced my mind/psi dom (my 2nd villain ever created and longest surviving) who has been sat at 41.... well forever. But I read up on the changes to psi assault, and looked back over mind controls powers (which look great to me on paper) and decided that I can (no, I will
) make something off this toon and finally get her to 50 after nearly 5 years.
But something still seems off with her, I just can't get her to play right... *sigh* so rather than just chalk this up to the sets not suiting my playstyle I looked back over the powers in mids again, thats when I noticed terrify is slottable for to-hit debuff, yet theres no numbers, even when slotted, both in mids and in game.
Is this a mistake in allowable enhancements? other fear powers which have a to hit debuff (i.e. fearsome stare - dark miasma, touch of fear - dark melee) show the figures where those which don't (i.e. spectral terror - illusion control) aren't slottable for it but terrify can be slotted with SOs, generic IOs, and both to-hit debuff and accurate to-hit debuff sets.
In other news never try to fight carnies with -1 SOs slotted on a freshly respeced all psi damage character which your trying to get back to grips with -
I'll echo the plant control suggestions, it's a fun set from early on, great control, and at end game you can easily solo 8 man spawns. I got a plant/rad to 50 and got her slotted exactly how I wanted (and you can fit in a lot of purples in that build!) and was still enjoying plant enough that I made a plant/fire dom, and got that to 50 (still havn't got her fully slotted with purps, but I've got her well into perma dom)
Other builds I've really enjoyed:
Dual pistols/devices blaster: cloaking device + smoke grenade + toe bombed trip mine + let off all those lovely AoEs = great fun. Hard hitting, works well solo or on teams, plenty of variety.
Demon/pain MM: a good solid build for solo, bring a lot of resilience and damage boost to a team, a lot of variety amongst the pets
Ice/energy tank: a build that doesn't have to wait ages to be a good main tank, takes some good play to keep your defenses at full whack with energy absorption but I found that a lot more fun that waiting for a god mode power, energy does good enough damage to solo at a good enough pace especialy with icicles slowly melting mobs
Fire/WP scrapper: good defenses, great damage, both ST and AoE
Dark/dark brute: if you enjoy the challenge of a tight build and a very active defense then this is the build for you, played well it's amazing, but slip up and you faceplant quickly.
Illusion/sonic troller: I nice variety of control, buff, and debuff, good from the outset, gets it's stand out power quite early, fast enough solo and a real assest to teams, this is the character I've got most of my master of XXXX TF on, even though she's never been a badging toon
dark/dark defender: a great toon for support and debuff, the damage is low-ish solo (though I haven't soloed her since the damage increase when solo for defs) but good enough that your not going to be fighting a war of attrition having to heal yourself till you run out of end
Other builds I've tried and are fun: spines/regen scrapper, necro/dark MM, thugs/poison MM, nrg/nrg blaster, nin/nin stalker, grav/emp troller
Edit: missed the point about no GR so disregard the first 2 -
Quote:Thanks, this seems to have done the trick, just played for 1 1/2 hours with no crashes at all, much appreciated, was going crazy taking the damn thing apart, scouring through event logs, uninstalling, reinstalling*head tilts*
um.
Okay. uninstall the Nvidia drivers. run driver sweeper.
then re-install.
This is sounding like some kind of data corruption. -
I've stopped Nhancer affecting CoX and now I'm blue-screening instead of just crashing to desktop, no associated drivers or programs with the BSOD, PCs still working fine with everything else, normal use, surfing, other games
-
I'm running Nhancer (2.5.9) only mod I've made through that is to force DXT3 (openGL) to make it run a bit smoother, but thats been running at the same settings for near 2 months now, I hadn't thought of resetting everything on it though, will try that straight away
-
I've been unable to play for about a week now, tried several fixes including downgrading the video drivers to the basic microsoft and the nvidia one from the CD which came with my card all to no avail. I've monitored CPU/mem use while in play and they stay at about the same values, no spikes associated with the crash or ramping up of memory use the only thing I have been able to find is this from the event log:
Failed extract of third-party root list from auto update cab at: <http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3/static/trustedr/en/authrootstl.cab> with error: A required certificate is not within its validity period when verifying against the current system clock or the timestamp in the signed file.
after some googling I found this is the cab file used to verify genuine windows, however this isn't in the event log for every crash, and I've downloaded the window genuine tool for XP and that says I'm fine...
any help would be much appreciated, heres a CoH Helpers log of my system in case it will help

Quote:Thats not good to hear, I stuck with PNY for my new card because they've always worked well for me beforeWell, several things. First, brand. PNY is one of the Nvidia vendors known to have been cutting back on hardware quality in order to sell their cards for a profit. Depending on the fan, and the fan controller they've used, your card may not be able to adequately cool itself.
Quote:Second: power. The Geforce GTS 250 is a hungry chip. You need at least a 500 watt power supple: http://xfxforce.com/en-us/products/g.../250GTS.aspx#2
Quote:Third: Driver support. According to posts on Nvidia's own forum, Nvidia has been pulling back from OpenGL support. No points for guessing what graphics API City of Heroes uses.my drivers the latest version (6.14.12.5721)
Quote:* * *
What I suspect is happening is this: You don't have the power supply or the cooling to run the GTS 250 you have.
Quote:The card works fine on other games because of Nvidia's focus on DirectX. The card is downclocking itself and working power management profiles correctly.
The card fails on City of Heroes because the power-management isn't cutting in, and it's trying to run at the cards full performance against OpenGL.
thanks for the run down of issues -
got a new PNY gts250 card last week and now it's starting to over heat whenever I play CoX at the highest settings, I've been using the machine for other graphics intensive games/programs which are about equivalent to CoX and it's been working like a dream, but after about 30 mins on max it's over heating so badly it's crashing the whole PC
I can't find any settings to adjust the fan temperature (it's only kicking up to high gear just - as in a matter of seconds - before it crashes) is there anything I'm missing before I just go out and find a new case with better cooling on it? Anybody else had problems with this card? any reason this is only happening on CoX? -
may have to try this on my plant/rad, I've tried her against a few GMs and the results have been good, but without PA to tank AVs are going to be tricky, suspect I've have to play well and get lucky for 0 deaths
build for comparrison

edit: forgot to mention that that plant/rad build runs at 188.5% global recharge, and only has 3 LotGs in it, so without AM (30%) and adding 2 more LotGs (15%) over 170% is acheivable for non rad builds which will only be just off perma hasten (1 or 2 sec down time) -
Quote:/signedREVAMP. THE. SHADOW. SHARD.
Seriously, what is the logic in letting the coolest damn zone in the game just sit there?
and while your at it make the zones co-op, remake all 4 shard TFs, give them some variety in the missions, new story arcs for heroes and villains. -
I keep on getting scrapperlock on my plant/rad troller, I was on a hess the other day and I was just charging off ahead, as usual, and thinking the team was following me so I used seed of confusion on a spawn, looked for unconfused bosses (normaly doesn't happen between the contagious confusion proc and the chance of overpower, but I do have to let off some controls at them when it does to stop me faceplanting), flung out creepers over them, tabbed to select a boss and let off roots on him and whoops, that boss was in another spawn, quickly throw down spirit tree and let off a heal, seeds still has some downtime so I'm thinking fast about how to handle it when one of the scrappers leaps into the second spawn and lets off an AoE to distract a good portion of the agro, so I move up and support him leaving the creepers, pet and the rest of the team to deal with the first spawn, as the second spawn starts falling seeds is back up so I move on to confuse a third, let of roots and more creepers pop up in them to deal some damage, that scrappers keeping pace and is done with the second spawn, the rest of the team must still be on that first spawn (slow pokes...) so we take down the third just in time for seeds to pop again so I let it off on the final spawn in the room and see the named boss we're looking for in there so I let off a targetting bind so everyone knows this is the spawn we want and pile in with scrapper in tow
This is when the tank goes "where are you guys?", I pop open the map to find me and the scrapper are alone, the tank had taken the rest of the team off a different way, I didn't get a chance to reply before the mission was complete
I've decided I love plant control by the way, but heres a warning: if you try it you may never want to play another control set and brings with it feelings of godlike ability and may cause you to look down on non plant controllers/dominators. You'll also annoy the hell out of everybody when that little cave room your fighting in is suddenly filled with 100s of creepers, each of which has the same agro cap as the tank, who may get jealous (and annoyed because he can't get into melee) -
This is happening on most holds from what I've seen, interesting to hear that it's happening on grav as well though as the hold proc from gravitational anchor (purp immob set) is playing the grav hold animation properly, so I had assumed the grav holds would be working alright and hadn't got my old grav troller out to check them out...
-
So been thinking about this for a while now, and realised something wierd...
I like playing through the normal content, doing arcs for contacts, I don't mind joining some friends to farm a mission or to get someones toon up some levels, I quite enjoy playing through AE arcs, I go around hunting for badges, especialy if their for accolades, have an appropriate title for the toon, or are hard to get (don't have a "badging" toon though, I get them on whatever character I'm enjoying playing, or would be most useful to the team for things like "master of" badges), I enjoy teaming, and I enjoy soloing, I like to dabble in the market to make some money, I like to head to the arena to have a match against someone, whether for a competition or just for the challenge, I like to head to the PvP zones and duke it out there or grab the badges/temp powers from the side misisons in the zone, I like to play around in the tailors designing new costumes for toons, or create new toons and try out different powersets and combinations, I like to advance through the low levels and watch a charcter grow and learn how they work, and I like playing at max level to get more IOs, merits, or inf to make them better -
*pauses for breath*
I like to get new stuff for free, but understand when things are put into boosters/expansions we have to pay for, I hate finding bugs, but understand how hard it is to keep test for these things and keep them out when the game is undergoing constant changes and upgrades, theres a list of stuff I'd like to see in the game, but I understand that it takes time to get all this stuff in, and some great ideas may be impractical or unbalance the game.
And after stalking through the forums for most of my time in CoX it seems everyone has a "LOLpvp" or "LOLbadges" or "I hate farming" to bear...
So am I the only one who enjoys all the aspects of this game? -
Quote:Thats not quite right, you can't replicate the old 2nd and 4th settings as the lower level spawns would be +1 to the teams size (5 man spawns on a team of 4) and the higher ones would be at the teams size, so solo on 4th difficulty you'd be fighting 2 man +1 spawns and 1 man +2 spawns.Basically, the old settings are:
Level 1: +0, 1 person, no bosses, no AVs
Level 2: +0, 2 person, yes bosses, no AVs
Level 3: +1, 1 person, yes bosses, no AVs
Level 4: +1, 2 person, yes bosses, no AVs
Level 5: +2, 1 person, yes bosses, yes AVs
If there are any differences, they come out of changes to the basic spawn rules more so than the difficulty settings compilations.
the boss spawn rate has been up for quite a while, not sure if this was changed in i14 or i15 but definitly noticed it when I came back (left late i13, came back late i15), I duo a lot with a friend and some missions there would only be a couple of spawns which weren't 1 boss 1 minion on basic difficulty, others there would be only the boss spawn at the end if the mission called for one...
Don't mind the changes personaly in fact our corruptor duo (fire/rad, ice/cold) needed the extra challenge even at low levels, but I can see this could be an issue for others -
/poison is also very good with thugs, but more concentrated on ST debuffs than storm or dark, but with the bruiser offering a mini tank and a lot of mitigation post 32 theres great synergy between the sets, very active, great for PvE and PvP, and capable of downing AVs, the ST heal does take quite a bit of slotting to become useful though
