  1. I didn't think many of them would even know CoH, they're such different games, but there's a thread in general about CoH closing over there and nobody is happy about it!

It was released 3 days ago, and I doubt they are making as much money as they expected, which is probably why they're shutting down CoH, in the hopes that many will flock to their newest game. Don't play into their hands, don't give any more money to a company that has sold you short.

Cease all business dealings with NCSoft, and at least have a clear conscience.
Yeah, I am really ticked off at NCSoft for waiting until *after* GW2 launched to drop the bomb here. They were obviously too afraid of a GW2 boycott from the CoH community, which is exactly what is going to happen anyway now but on a grander scale: I'd be surprised if any CoH players ever again give NCSoft a dime.

But unfortunately, I heard there were over a million preorders, with 400,000 playing by early start. Even more unfortunately, I was one of those prepurchasers logging in when the servers came up August 25th for early start. I hope they enjoy the last payment they're ever going to get out of me.
  3. No way am I deleting. I too plan on playing just like usual, right up until the end comes, hoping against hope that an eleventh hour save of some sort comes along.

And not only do I truly hope I am able to be out of work and online for the final swansong of Virtue, if that is the way it really does pan out, but I hope the devs are there too. I'd like to give them one final salute.

God, I feel like crying right now. When will this feeling go away?

Damn and blast, NCSoft. I hate you.
  4. The thing that worries me now is that, as the entire team has been laid off and Paragon Studios shut down, they will all get snatched up by other dev teams long before our letters ever get to Mr. Kim whatever. But I guess anything is worth trying.
  5. War Witch,

I was wondering where you were!

There are those of us who gamed with our families, whose grandparents and grandchildren have a special bond no one else can quite match....and all because of Paragon Studios and CoH. It has been part of all our lives for so long (and was the first game three generations of my family ever played together) that I don't know what we'll do now that it's gone.

Thank you, and a big thanks to everyone at Paragon. You will be sorely missed.
  6. It just doesn't make sense that Paragon Studios would blithely be releasing new powersets and putting Issue 24 on test if they knew there was a renewable contract up at any minute that had such a ridiculous chance of being cancelled or turned down.

    I don't buy it.

I think NCSoft's poor earnings report this past early August had much more to do with it. They needed more cash flow (or less bills) to satisfy shareholders, fast. That, and the fact that they're Asian and CoH is an American game would have had more to do with shutting CoH down instead of Aion or Lineage 2 here.

Aion and Lineage are wildly popular throughout Korea and Asia. They're going to keep getting developed anyway, regardless of how poorly they do in the USA and Europe by comparison, so why would they shut them down here really? I doubt the costs of translating Korea's versions of Aion and Lineage 2 are anywhere near what the costs are for supporting a full 80-person development team here in the USA for CoH.

In contrast, CoH bombed in Asia. The culture clash is evident-- they just don't "get" superheroes like we Americans do-- so development costs can't be justified as much. The USA and Europe are just remote pin-dots on the map for them compared to the millions of Asians in their home turf.

I have yet to see a complete compilation of all of the petitions and efforts to save City of Heroes, so I've made one here. Know about one you don't see here? Post a link! I'll add it to the list.

The Official Petition for NCsoft to Keep City of Heroes Up and Running
    http://www.change.org/petitions/ncso...f-heroes#intro

The Petition for NCsoft to Open the Game's Source Code
If NCsoft is abandoning City of Heroes entirely, what's it matter to them if we keep the game running after they're done with it? If they open the source code, then the community can keep the game running on its own servers!
    http://www.change.org/petitions/ncso...roes-villains#

The Petition for NCsoft to Compromise With Us
This petition isn't as well-known as the first two, but I think it's more than reasonable to ask that they help us keep the game alive (most likely by opening the source code), so I'm going to try and get it a bit of exposure here.
    http://www.change.org/petitions/ncso...rvers-running#

An Organized Effort to Keep the Game Alive After Shutdown
Over on CoHTitan, they're already working on making plans to keep the game alive even after NCsoft shuts it down.
    http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index....ic,4877.0.html

Sign all of the petitions you can. I promise you, no matter what happens, we are not going to let this game die.

But, of course, it would be much easier for us if we got NCsoft reconsider, or at least give us the code that we'll need to run it ourselves.

We can do this. We're the strongest community throughout the entire genre of MMOs. No matter what, we're not going to let our City fall without a fight.
Thanks for this post and all the info, Angel! The 110,000-hit Goodbye Thread is awesome, but quite cumbersome to dig through to find anything specific in.

Wow, your eyeballs must be bleeding as well as tearing up, huh?

    To all of you...

Thanks so much for all your hard work and devotion, Z, and everyone else at Paragon!

This feels like the day my beloved dog died. Seriously. And that was 13 years ago and I never have been able to get another one.

CoH was the first MMORPG my family and I played together; we started the day after launch. There were six of us; my (now 74-year-old) parents, my (then 9-year-old) daughter, myself, and my sister and her husband. We have since been joined by two other of my cousins, and two more children (my 8-year-old son and my 10-year-old niece).

Relative Danger (always relatives, usually in danger) has lived for 8 1/2 years on Virtue server, going through all the highs and lows together.

    You will sorely be missed.
  9. Where is the petition you sign to try and keep it open please? It says in the megathread there is one, but I can't find it.... 44+ pages though....

    This sucks!
  10. It really ticks me off that they waited until after Guild Wars 2 launched to make this announcement. It's quite sleazy of NCsoft. I already bought GW2 so now I'm stuck having handed NSleazeSoft sixty bucks more than I would have, but I will never pay them any money again.

So let me get this straight-- besides Guild Wars' box fee, all they have left are Truly Free to Play games like Lineage 2 and Aion in the US which are mainly inhabited by Brazilians who formerly hacked those games and ran them off private servers back when they were both pay-to-play.... And they choose to shut down CoH instead?!

    NCSoft, you boggle my mind.

*Off to find the petition to save CoH*

I truly pray that the wonderful Paragon Studios somehow are able to re-form under their own new moniker either with this IP or even without it (or could Sony Online Entertainment even buy them out part and parcel and get CoH running again? Jeez, they've even kept Vanguard running all these years on one server!).

I love you, Paragon Studios, and I love CoH and its community. This is a very sad day, but let's pray you can pull out of it like last time during the Cryptic split!
  11. Thanks, everyone!

I bought $50 worth of points and got 4 tokens actually. So I got the whole Celestial set right off, plus the Phoenix wings/weapons from Fire & Ice for good measure.

I needed to open up some new character slots anyway, and they were on sale to boot, so between the discount for the points and the sale I really got a good deal on two five-packs. The rest I'm leaving in the pot for later. I have all the new powersets except Street Justice, so there's always that if I get too antsy.
  12. I did petition a GM, who politely declined my request (I just told him the truth: My family would like to change our longstanding SG name because we have added members from the online community and are no longer a family-only SG).

However, he pointedly told me that the devs frequently read the forums and that many now-implemented ideas have originated there, so I should put my request here.

So please, Paragon Studios, wave your magic wands (hey, we got staves already so it's not that much more of a stretch, lol) and PLEASE implement a way for us to change our Supergroup names without disbanding!

Put it into the cash shop! I bet it will generate some nice revenue for you. I would be the first in line, I know that.

    *crosses fingers*
  13. Aw man! Nooooo!

I'm subbed into October, 2012. I was going to meander my way through Celestial in the next few months as I get new tokens, but now what do I do?

How do I even get more tokens right away? And will I need 3 of them to get all the Celestial stuff (I think it's 3)?
  14. Whoa! Oh no! When is this supposed to go live then?
  15. Is the new t9 Mecha set *replacing* Celestial or Fire & Ice? Or is there just going to be a 3rd set in t9 rewards?
  16. Hey, does this mean that the Celestial set in t9 is going away and being replaced by this new Mecha set? Or are they just going to add Mecha to the Celestial and Fire & Ice choices we have now?

I just dinged into t9 this past month, am paid up through October 2012, and was going to leisurely meander my way through the t9 Celestial and Fire & Ice choices this year....

Is that the bell for a Celestial three-alarm fire I now hear going off?
  17. Yeah, my thought now is just to petition and see if they'll be kind enough to do it.
  18. Like the sign says, hehe.... Is there a way to change your Supergroup name without disbanding?
  19. ROFL. Wouldn't you know it-- tomorrow is my day off.

But I take it from these upgrades that the floodgates are opening quite soon for the free players then? Let's face it, it would be the pits if so many new players stormed the place (as happens with every AAA MMORPG title that goes F2P) that the servers were constant balls of wreckage from the overload.

Yeah, by the time I randomly checked and got on last night, all the good names were taken. Siren, Spectre, Redeemer, Eclipse, Phoenix, Meteor, Armageddon and Revolution, I hope you at least play your characters and they don't all just languish at level 1 or something.
  21. Take care and best of luck, C. Bruce! You rock, and any company will be more than glad to have you.

Thanks for all of your hard work on CoX over the years.
  22. I did a search and came up with nothing, so I'll throw this question out there:

When will Going Rogue's closed beta invites be sent out?

Thanks in advance for any help!
  23. Hello there!

Like the subject title asks, well, are there any double XP weekends coming up over the holidays?

    Thanks!
