Save our City: Ways to Help

If there's one thing that City of Heroes has taught us, it's that you don't need to be wearing a mask and cape to save the day; heroes come in all shapes and sizes.

Sometimes saving the day isn't about beating up the bad guys; sometimes it's about trying to go back in time, about putting out fires, about all banding together to finish a common mission. Sometimes it's about adding your voice to the rising protest in order to make a difference.

I have yet to see a complete compilation of all of the petitions and efforts to save City of Heroes, so I've made one here. Know about one you don't see here? Post a link! I'll add it to the list.

The Official Petition for NCsoft to Keep City of Heroes Up and Running
http://www.change.org/petitions/ncso...f-heroes#intro

The Petition for NCsoft to Open the Game's Source Code
If NCsoft is abandoning City of Heroes entirely, what's it matter to them if we keep the game running after they're done with it? If they open the source code, then the community can keep the game running on its own servers!
http://www.change.org/petitions/ncso...roes-villains#

The Petition for NCsoft to Compromise With Us
This petition isn't as well-known as the first two, but I think it's more than reasonable to ask that they help us keep the game alive (most likely by opening the source code), so I'm going to try and get it a bit of exposure here.

NEW: The Letter Campaign
There is now a campaign to send thousands of protest letters to the offices of NCsoft. If you've got some spare time and a leftover stamp or two, please join us and make your voice heard!

An Organized Effort to Keep the Game Alive After Shutdown
Over on CoHTitan, they're already working on making plans to keep the game alive even after NCsoft shuts it down.

A Section of CoHTitan Dedicated to Saving Our City
CoHTitan is quickly becoming the unofficially official forums, rising up to fully replace these forums once they go down. There's now a section dedicated to the efforts to save City of Heroes, and it would probably be a good idea to bookmark it before the day when NCsoft shuts down these forums entirely.

Sign all of the petitions you can. Bookmark all of the forum links you can. I promise you, no matter what happens, we are not going to let this game die.

But, of course, it would be much easier for us if we got NCsoft reconsider, or at least give us the code that we'll need to run it ourselves.

We can do this. We're the strongest community throughout the entire genre of MMOs. No matter what, we're not going to let our City fall without a fight.

Thanks for this post and all the info, Angel! The 110,000-hit Goodbye Thread is awesome, but quite cumbersome to dig through to find anything specific in.

Wow, your eyeballs must be bleeding as well as tearing up, huh?

Please, please save this game. I'm not ready for it to go down the toilet. We have unfinished business to do! The biggest mystery of all are the Incarnate slots! How can they be uncompleted?!

We'll be doing our best!

I don't know... I think that our best chances of keeping City of Heroes up and running is to take the game into our own hands. Whether we're going to be able to bribe NCsoft into handing over the IP and data and do this all legally, or whether we're going to have to get by with underground private servers, still remains to be seen.

However, that's not to say that we shouldn't still lend our support to the petitions fighting to convince NCsoft to reconsider their closing the game. Public backlash and a sudden flood of support have been known to touch the hearts of similar corporations in the past; we may still have a chance.

But if not, we should also be prepared for the next step. If NCsoft refuses our pleas, then I fully intend to sink every cent of spending money that I have into campaigns to buy the IP for the game. If that, too, fails, then... well... there are already teams of, ah, 'Chaotic Good' programmers working on reverse-engineering the code for private servers. I'm sure that at least one of them will be willing to share.

I know... it really shows how sudden this decision was, though, seeing how many things were left unfinished. The developers didn't see this coming any more than we did. It's very saddening to realize how many features may never come to fruition now.

Even if the growing team over at CoH Titan gets their hands on the IP for City of Heroes, they might never really achieve the vision that the Paragon Studios team had for future content. Though then again, when faced with the choice of "no City of Heroes" and "City of Heroes with either no updates or very few updates", then I don't think it'll be very hard to make the decision...

No matter what happens, I really don't think that this will be the end. It's just going to be the dawn of a new era for heroes; the migration of our community to another server, perhaps even another game, another medium.

I've signed the petitions and will support TonyV's actions financially if it goes that far.

I've also (see my sig) taken action of my own.

We're working on it - it's going to need a minor miracle, but giving up isn't what heroes do.

Thank you so much for the support, Steele!

And it seems that a lot of people have chosen to boycott NCsoft now. XD

I can hardly blame them. Though I haven't consciously decided "I'm boycotting NCsoft", I know quite deeply that I'm never going to give a cent to those selfish, greedy @#$%^&*s ever again.

Would you like me to add your boycott link to the list? :3 I'm sure plenty of other people would love to join.
