Thats kinda the difference between pure PVP and RP PVP.

PVP is just for slapping each other around and your enjoyment mileage may vary.

RP PVP is for a story, and given the broad group of people you are bringing in along with different skill levels you need to have some rules of engagement set out so that its fun and not an exercise in frustration for everyone.

This isn't to say that there weren't times, like Apoph mentioned where it was just an all out rumble. Depends on the event, depends on the people. Just like different PVP events have different rules, what inspirations if any are allowed, whether you can hosp, etc.

So tell us if you have it maxed, and what your build includes (GPU, CPU, RAM, MOBO)
    Thanks.
I can run pretty much everything cranked to max on my machine, with the exception of occulsion. It is a fairly heavy FPS hit when I turn it on/up.

I run at 200% detail, 8x AA, everything else on and set to the highest. I generally run occulsion on quality or performance if I want the increase. I'd imagine I'd probably want one of the newest video cards like a GeForce 460 to avoid that issue.

    System:
    Intel Core i7 920
Intel DX58SO mobo (There is a better 2nd gen of this board being released shortly, great board but it has some positioning weirdness)
6 GB of DDR 3 PC3-12800 (Patriot Viper specifically)
GeForce 260 GTX Core 216 896 MB (EVGA)

I'd probably replace that 260 with a 460 Fermi card now in order to get better FPS and occulsion support. The machine I'm using now is a bit over 2 years old now. Also as a note I'm running a dual monitor set up as well. Two 20.1" LCDs, resolution 1680x1050.

    1. When you're PvPing, you have no time to RP.
    2. RPPvP replaces creativity and role-playing with speed-twitch ability.

I have a character who's quite good at PvP, but I don't RPPvP with her. Simply put, she's not supposed to be as powerful as she is in PvP, and I'm not about to abuse a game system that wasn't designed for RP in order to let her win. So while taking a random fight to the arena is fun occasionally (as in, your character won't stop bugging me and I have nothing to do anyway), its not a good tool for ongoing RP, because it forces mechanics not intended to interact with RP into RP, and that never goes well, regardless of whether its an MMO or a pen and paper game.

Then there's the other side of the issue, as to why RPPvP is usually needed. Apophasis does have a good point there, that sometimes, there's not agreement as to where a story should head, and there's no good way to decide, other than the arena. That's a shame, really, but its also more common than it needs to be. That's mostly due to the newer generation of RPers not knowing about (or rejecting) what's called the RPer's Contract (and there's a lot of different names for it, that's just the one I first heard). Probably many who are reading this thread already know what that is, but for those who don't, I'll try to encapsulate briefly.

    1. Don't play other people's characters for them. This means ever really, including things like this. (Incorrect: "I smash my fist into your nose." Correct: "I swing my fist at your nose.")

    2. Don't godmode. Your character shouldn't ever be able to block everything, dodge everything, always hit, be immune to everything, etc. If you're in a fight, take a few punches. Yeah, you're superpowered. So's the other guy. (Unless she's explicity not, of course.)

    3. No meta-gaming (knowing stuff your character wouldn't know on his own).

If those guidelines are applied, 99% of any disagreements can be handled without needing to resort to non-RP solutions. Problem is, players that are actually capable of using those guidelines are becoming fewer and fewer.

If you (and the people you RP with) are able to use those guidelines, you'll never have to worry about needing to use PvP at all to settle anything. If you (or the people you RP with) can't or won't use them, then RPPvP comes in, because all RPPvP is, is a crutch for an inability to resolve character issues through RP.

(In order to keep from derailing this thread, if there's going to be some sort of debate over the guidelines themselves as opposed to the nature of the statement, IM me, or poke me in RPVirtue, or copy the rules to a new thread or something, please.)

Edit: I neglected to mention at all the OP's addressing of RPPvP events. I'm actually for the events, provided they've got an actual story behind them, and aren't just a scheduled excuse to pretend like you're RPing.
What I think a lot of people don't understand is that RPVP events tend to be done with a bit of a gentleman's agreement. All out PVPers generally come but aren't rushing out to beat the snot immediately out of the opposing team. There is also a bit of scripted nature combined with some chance opportunity. I know when Kadekawa use to run these events he'd talk to everyone, make sure the uber players turned it down a notch and that everyone had fun with a focus on the event/story rather then a brawl.

This way people have time to RP/talk and interact beyond just hack and slash. And you also generally have someone there playing moderator/story master. That person is generally the person who organized the event, knows the story and is able to guide the group.

But there is also a level of imagination needed as well, if someone accidentially dies, or auto fires a power you let it go.

The things I tend to use RPVP for are more dynamic story situations, where the story has an opportunity to branch and I want to let people act it out. During one of the SCORPIO stories we had agents tracking down a mercenary that operated generally out of the Isles but was suspected of breaking into Freedom Base to steal some operational data from Longbow that was tied directly to the story the Scorpio agents were working on.

I grabbed my stalker (the mercenary) and a few friends and we led them on a merry chase through Bloody Bay. They could either catch me, and my team, or we'd get away, but in the background another character was working to attempt to extract the same data while the chaos was interrupting Longbow activities in Bloody Bay.

They didn't catch the mercenary (close a few times), and she managed to deal a blow to Colonel Hero which started a bit of a rivalry between them. Had they caught her I would have given them more intel for the story they wouldn't have otherwise gotten till way later. But regardless it was fun and interactive. I especially enjoyed sulking around behind a agent standing on a pier and talking even though they couldn't see me, taunting them.

And its also important to note that even in conflict situations not every character resorts immediately to action.

So the use of RP PVP really has nothing to do with needing to resort to another method of conflict resolution. Sometimes its just more fun. Because otherwise how else would we have done the event like I mentioned above? This was also before AE though it is probably still more fun as a RP PVP event in a zone then AE.

Or more likely, this post from OCR was coming and simply wasn't finished. The original lead on the layoffs was an anonymous tip from someone probably trying to stir the pot.

I think Paragon was just as caught off guard by this announcement as we are and unfortunately now with the leak they may not be able to say anything because of labor laws.

I've had more then a few jobs where I had months notice of layoffs.

It depends on the industry and market your in honestly and what exactly you do. It also depends on who the person being laid off is, if they're an integral part of operations you don't do that quickly necessarily, sometimes you want an overlap period to adjust with them gone.

And as SilverAgeFan said, sometimes they're mutual, company needs to make a budget fix, someone is already looking elsewhere, so they make a plan.

But we'll never know those details because its private.

My bet however is that he's already set up elsewhere, someone mentioned Carbine and thats a very likely possibility. He's a seasoned animator, its not a far stretch to think that NCSoft may have wanted him on another, non-Paragon, project.

    • Related, I have seen a few occasions where honorable employees who are ready to move on will essentially "jump on a the layoff grenade" for their fellow workers. Details I have witnessed included:
      • Senior employees aware that either they go or three people from their department go to make budget lines doing so out of protest and a protective sense
      • Employees with other opportunities and offers already waiting in the wings making things easier on their bosses. (For some bosses layoffs are the toughest part of their job. Period.)
      • Accepting a nice severance for volunteering to retire early or take the layoff for the team, conveniently coming at a time when said employee is already ready for a change (either of career, employment status, or just three months off)

In other words, if he was laid off, there is a whole lot of none-of-our-business (good or bad) behind the situation. BABs has done some great work over the years during his tenure with CoX. And even if he wasn't laid off, think about it, 5 or so years is a Looooooong time to hold a position in as dynamic an industry as his.

In time, I'm sure we'll learn the truth of this rumor regarding his status. But for now folks, slow down a little on this one.

He addressed my own concerns with weapon scaling and customization, and made it a point at the first HeroCon to pull me aside and explain his position to me in detail. That meant a lot to me.

I'm incredibly disappointed by the actions of Paragon Studios today.
We have no idea if this wasn't a joint decision. In fact we have no details about what exactly went down. For all we know BaBs selected to leave and or is being moved to something else. They could have decided months ago that his job would be removed after Going Rogue launched.

So I wouldn't jump to conclusions that something horrible or evil happened.

I think its more shame on whoever did the tip off. They're stirring up the pot nothing more. BaBs did cut off his community contact on his own awhile ago.

The old site will remain up for a time to allow people to copy their own talk pages and any content not brought over automatically. It will however remain read only.

As far as your large images go, we're going to be allowing offsite images. There will be some caveats to this and those haven't been decided and we will possibly also restrict where you can host those images from as well. I'll try to get more details on that up this weekend.

Everyone will be required to register again, no user accounts will be brought over automatically.

And thanks, its looking like its going to be mostly me this weekend doing the transfers, so I appreciate the luck.
  11. Just a friendly reminder guys. This is happening tomorrow. VirtueVerse will be read only and will be moving to its new home.

I have no idea how you can be a pretend RPer.

But here you go, two events, posted on Virtueverse in story form that were RPVP events. These are the two major ones I was involved with that were part of the original groups mentioned in the OP and sadly at the tale end of the RPVP heyday.

Project A.R.E.S. involved members of several super groups and villain groups including the Hyperion Force as the main group. We had several players play the part of the villains in the story and all of the story events were handled in the arena including the rescue of Ava Adore.
    http://www.virtueverse.com/index.php...e/Project_Ares

The Liberty Bowman story was actually fairly large it involved a large number of groups and was done in both PVP zones, the arena and in PVE. This was a fairly complex story and Ava along with the Hyperion Force and Archon X were only involved with the story end and the Bowman's rescue. Kadekawa was actually killed during one of the finale operations tied to this story. (http://juggertha.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d1hkq34 Juggertha did some awesome artwork of Kadekawa's final mission)
    http://www.virtueverse.com/index.php...Missing_Bowman

More recently SCORPIO has done operations that were in PVP zones, we use to run patrols and RP in the zones and arena. We've even ran a few minor story bits in the PVP zones, there were parts of our With Leave (http://www.virtueverse.com/index.php...y_9/With_Leave) storyline that happened in Bloody Bay and Sirens.

We also use to do zone PVP regularly, it was a lot of fun too especially when random people would show up and join in, especially in Bloody Bay.

    Mada Zarifa vs Colonel Hero
SCORPIO defends their temporary control of the Arachnos Base in Bloody Bay

Thats just what I could dig up in a few minutes. The real downside is I just don't have the time anymore to organize the RP events never mind RPVP events I was running with Scorpio. But we do still use PVP for story events when it fits. And we do still occasionally hit up the Arena for Training Simulations.

Edit: One more I thought of, when SincereAgape and Neo Trick Shot were married Ghost Widow showed up and kidnapped Agape and if I remember correctly dragged him off to Bloody Bay. The wedding party then rushed to the rescue to save him and several villains arrived to thwart them.

These are just a couple examples of people who are role players also PVPing, and very few of them had PVP builds. We did it for fun, we did it for story. This did happen and still does to some extent.

The rp playing base on virtue of whoever attended those events is almost all gone. The remaining player base on virtue dosen't rppvp because our game is built up in cliques with different sg's demanding all the other sg's realize how awesome they are. People are too used to doing rp plots were mary su generic characters win everything, because of this most rpers are way too afraid to lose.

The complaints about the new system are moot at this point, it's been almost two years since i13 was launched people have had that long to prepare new builds and try pvping again. In a game known for it's quick leveling it's a joke for anyone to complain they don't have the build to pvp or their characters concept dosen't fit. Roll a new toon if you want to pvp and get a different concept. Yes pvp has changed, get over it.

    ...

As someone who was part of the RPvP community that use to thrive on Virtue you really don't know what your talking about. We used the crap out of base raiding for RPvP back in the day and the PVP zones for RP events.

The ability to build a base dojo then actually have duels in them really never got old. And being able to actually chase a fugitive through a zone thats being manned by a real person is a lot of fun. And before you had AE it was sometimes the only way to run a story.

We ran the Liberty Bowman plot that way on Virtue, he was taken out during another operation in Bloody Bay and they created a story around his kidnapping. And thats just one example.

Not every SG on the server is into the Mary Sue always win god mode. Maybe the groups you run with, but not any of the ones I've been involved with. I also know groups that still use PVP in RP though not generally in the zones, mostly they use the arena for duels/training/simulations.

Sometimes RPvP has nothing to do with winning/losing, sometimes its just the ability to be able to play out whats happening.

Actually slicing the bad guy with your sword is way more fun then "/em slashes bad guy in the face".

Its like AE, use it in a creative fashion.

I'm a fairly heavy story based RPer and I'd chose PVP over text fighting any day. Its more fun as long as you don't get a group of people who are more interested in winning then story/fun. But thats a consideration for anything in the game when RP is involved.

    As for the OP:

I really enjoy RPVP and I sadly got into it with the Shinsengumi at the tail end of its heyday with the Liberty Bowman event. I find it hard honestly finding other people who are up for it, and I sadly don't have the skill that Kadekawa had in convincing people to actually try it.

But if someone managed to set up a group or some events I would LOVE to get back involved and help how I can.

Well one important thing to note, this move is going to allow the Admin to run the maintenance scripts more effectively that up to now haven't been as easy to run given the out of date mediawiki software.

So unused images will be purged periodically where prior they haven't been easily purged.

I -believe- we can do Union in a more automatic fashion, however even with that said I almost don't know if we should. There is much to be said about keeping all of the page history and user accounts, but there is also a lot of junk filling up the system from bot accounts (even banned ones) to history on bot pages. History content takes up a very large chunk of the data footprint for both wikis.

Union, compared to Virtue will be fairly easy to move in the more manual style, it only have 1700 articles compared to almost 10K. The real snag for Union might be images. There are almost 800 images on the site right now that are above 150K. I don't know offhand how many of those are unused, but those would need to be looked at separately once the migration happens.

We'll be leaving the .com address on the old server for a month or two to allow for people to go back and grab anything.

The new server will also have a hard restriction on file upload sizes, most likely 150 kb, thats why we decided to allow the widgets and for people to use offsite images (like photobucket and the such).

As for the migration, firstly we need some people to hammer the new server for a few days for testing, so if anyone is interested toss me a PM and I'll send over the address.

Hah yes, both Virtueverse and Unionverse will have a similar set up for the features/software. The content will be different along with the skin.
  17. Hey guys! I'm just passing some info on. We're going to be migrating Virtueverse to the new server starting the weekend of Oct 8-11. We're hoping to do Union the following weekend Oct 15-18.

What this means is the site is going to be on complete lockdown and users will be directed to the new site once its ready.

Check out this post for some details on new features coming with the upgrade: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showp...&postcount=615

Please make sure this message gets passed along. Its a big deal and I want to make sure everyone has a heads up to whats happening.
  18. Update on Server Migration:

Hey guys, we're just about ready to start the process of migrating the content over to the new server. We're asking everyone to pass this information on to your friends and supergroups that use VirtueVerse so everyone is aware!

Some details about the migration, the import process we'll be using is a bit more intensive and not as automated as we'd have preferred, because of that the site is going to be unavailable for a four day period. We're also going to ask that everyone verifies their content is all there afterwards, we'll be leaving the old site up for a short period to allow this.

There is also going to be some content that is not going to be imported, those details will be provided below.

Testers Needed! We're also looking for a few people willing to help us test some of the new wiki features on the new server. So if you are interested toss me a PM here and we'll get you set up.

    Migration Details
    When: October 8 - 11th
What: Migration of VirtueVerse to a new server (Unionverse will come a week later)

What content won't be coming over with the import:
    • Page History
    • User Accounts
    • Any images over 150 KB will not be imported along with any unused images.
    • Talk pages

    What content should be imported:
    • All wiki pages
    • All main namespace content (characters, stories, etc)
    • Categories
    • Templates
    • All images under 150 KB that are in use as of the lock down

New Features Preview: (list subject to change/updates)

    Security:
    • Added ReCaptcha to user registration. Captcha will not appear for registered users.

    Content:
    • Added support for easy article creation via a form.
    • Added support for widgets. Widgets will allow users to easily pull in outside content including:
      • Youtube Videos
      • RSS Feeds
      • Picasa gallery slideshows
      • Flickr Search Slideshow
      • Twitter feeds

Please note the Widgets are going to be on a trial basis, we'll be asking everyone to moderate themselves and others. If this gets abused we will remove it for everyone.

    <_<

It scares me that I had the same exact idea.

Honestly I don't get the whining, I still use AE, a lot actually. Its one of the best tools available for driving SG storyline content I no longer have to force my stories to fit into existing missions/content. If I want a in game encounter to go with a major storyline I can do that!

So while I don't often write long story arcs, I use it constantly for one/two story arcs tied to a larger storyline.

I'm not sure there is much the devs can do about the farm junk because the best they could do would be to wipe everything. And then people would just whine about having to republish or having lost their rating.

Its a situation they can't win at.

So... tl;dr I'm going to take some of my precious lacking time and write a cool arc.
  21. I'd love to come, but NYC is just a wee bit pricey after a trip to Seattle for PAX and we're going to Chicago the weekend before NYCC for an Atari Teenage Riot show.

Except people use VirtueVerse for setting up RP events and running stories as well.

I don't really see the point of splitting community attention in multiple directions. If you think VirtueVerse is just for Character Bios you've barely scratched the surface of the content people have put there.

However, I don't know that you can really compress text files much smaller than they are in there.
    Hrm...
We've tried several methods of processing large database dumps. Unfortunately its just to much and fails before completing, the server actually runs out of memory. There are also a few issues related to the platform change, the new server is a windows server, the old server was linux based.

Probably tomorrow I'm going to drop a fresh install of Mediawiki on the new server and work with the Admin to snag a decent size dump of content as XML and see if its possible to import those instead.

Its a slower process and has limitations (with images), and will probably require a few days where the site is locked down. But it may allow us to migrate without having to bring over all of the old revision history or forcing people to do it manually.

    Hah

If it was that easy I would have. Unfortunately the site is in a bit of a conundrum.

Need to remove tons of old revision history.

Need the new server and more space to effect the upgrade that will allow for removing the old revision history.

Can't move content to new server for upgrade...

    Its a vicious cycle.
