Yes, but for once a good one <^_^>b Certainly one of my favorites <'x'> -
@Sermon - Honestly, I dont' think they have a lot of choice in the matter.
You pretty much wind up with one of the following scenarios:
A) You give the slots away up front, for free - possible technical issues aside, you're essentially asking for it to be even more difficult to find content worth playing, because those who don't spend much time thinking about their arcs can now put out even more.
There's also the matter of "How many slots do we get?"
2 more? 10? If they make you buy it, then it becomes self regulating. Only the people who actually give a crap about their work are going to shell out for it; that doesn't mean it's going to guarantee the content is any good; but I suspect it stands a better chance.
It also lets them create a potentially very large number of maximum MA slots per-user, while guaranteeing very few people will have all of the slots full. (And if there are technical issues, they're likely to actually have the funding immediately available to take care of said issues.)
B) You add them as vet rewards - This solves part of the problem, in that only veteran players would have more than the basic 3 slots; but in doing so you create the following problems:
Alienating new players. Architect above any system added to the game stands a good chance of drawing in new players, because it's something very few other games have, and none so easy to do. From a business standpoint that kind of gating would be ridiculously stupid.
It also does nothing to address quality of content. Just because you've played for 5 years doesn't guarantee you know how to write. (Despite my reg date I've been around since just after launch, albeit on 2 different accounts and with several breaks for other games).
And again you hit the slot number issue, how do you determine how many slots is "enough" to give a player? Do you add them to old vet rewards or do you add them to new ones, meaning only 5+ year vets get them?
C) You don't give away any slots except via Dev's Choice and HOF - Unfortunately this just isn't going to work. Dev's Choice is great, but getting that award is difficult because of what it requires not just from the author, but the dev team as well.
It also stops you from editing your work; which while understandable means its not a true 4th slot.
Obviously, unless we go back to how it was on Test (I personally would not mind this), it's going to be a rather rare award anyway, and doubly rare for people with multiple good arcs.
HoF, unless something's changed in the last week since I've been on break, every arc that's hit it has then been downvoted and booted right back out. There's a lot of factors to that I won't get into here, but basing a 4th slot's availability on community good will is obviously an iffy thing at best.
D) You do what Posi is suggesting - you have players buy extra slots just like character slots. Yes, it's inconvenient, and as someone with a rather low fixed income, I do find it annoying; but it also solves all of the problems above.
The only problem of course is that it will cause some forum whining (as all microtransactions do).
It's not a perfect solution, but I can't honestly think of a more feasible one.
As for the interviews:
I'm particularly excited at the possibility of a graphics overhaul. CoH looks pretty darn good honestly; but there are some things - particularly older costume pieces (mostly the launch ones) that have relatively low res textures; and some of the particle effects are clearly quite dated.
Such an overhaul could theoretically lead to stuff like Power Customization as well.
Obviously it all depends on how far such an upgrade would go; or if it even ends up happening (the wording suggests they're only looking at the possibility of it; not actually doing it for sure); but it's an exciting time for CoH I think.
One of the reasons I love this game honestly; I have never once felt that the developers didn't care. Mistaken on a given issue? Sure. But never has it been a question of apathy.
(Other games I've played I have sometimes had to question the developer's commitment to the project. I won't elaborate which games here for obvious reasons; but that's something I've never encountered here, and it's why I keep coming back.)
All told, I'm pretty jazzed about the next few months - particularly the I15 Architect Toolbox and keyword search. They might not sound particularly big to some; but the keyword search alone could be a big big deal; and I'm very curious as to what this toolbox entails. I'm hoping I can do stuff like find-and-replace with it and the like (I hate editting in text format.) -
So - as I'm sure most of us are aware, giving us a fat-male and fat-female bodytype would be a serious pain in the butt, especially given that they aren't likely to be hugely popular.
Nevertheless, sometimes these bodytypes fit the character you want to create, and would be nice to have.
I think I *may* have come up with a possible solution; so while my account remains active (taking a break soon, will be back as always), I wanted to get this put up here.
Here's the idea - rather than a whole new bodytype, why not a "fat" torso-type, similar to the Armored setting?
Admittedly it'd limit the costume options available to your heavier heroes; probably mostly tights and maybe a few of the chest covering options; but it might be doable.
You could probably include a Lower Body version as well; so you can get the whole effect right.
I'll admit, it's not liable to let you make characters who are The Blob-level chunky; but it'd work for characters who need to be more heavy-set. Especially good I think for Architect, since sometimes your main villain aught to be a politician or scientist who isn't particularly physically adept themselves, but maybe has a huge, nasty bodyguard. Well or for custom hostages who are non-super people.
I'd also like to see a bear-like (as in actual grizzly or panda bear) skin for such a torso; because of late I've really wanted to make a panda character.
What?! Pandas are awesome, superheroes are awesome = together they rule the universe! <.<; It's genius! ... I think. Either that or bad beef from last night. Either way!
Anyway, it's just an idea. -
Sorry - please take me off the list Lazarus; I'm probably going to be quitting CoH again in the near future and am not in a good state of mind to be doing critiquing.
I'd planned to do it; but other things have interfered.
Sorry. -
<._.>; Catgirls definitely.
>.> My SG would go positively insane over the prospect.
Err... insane-er.
Imagine, if you will, an 8 person Mastermind Team where everyone is playing a catgirl, and then, each one summons 6 more catgirls.
Oh, and has "Tuna Patrol" as a T8 power - which is essentially gang-war, but summons more catgirls.
Oh yes... The Legion would be truly mighty then! >.>
Also I demand the attack powers be (in the following order):
Herring Hurl - You rapidly toss Herring at your opponent, causing both massive distraction and a weird smell to engulf them. (Secondary effect -Res Catgirl powers)
Tuna Toss - You hurl a Tuna at your opponent, knocking them down and causing them to smell like fish. (Secondary effect, Knockdown, -Res Catgirls)
Carp Crunch - You bash your opponent in the face with a Carp, stunning them, and giving them that funky fish odor. (Stun, -Res Catgirls)
<.< It would be *PURE WIN* I tell you! PURE UNDILUTED WIN! -
I personally thought 6 was just right honestly, the last boss is kinda rough! <@_@>; He'd probably be beatable without them, but it would have taken substantially more work from me (I died twice in the process).
So from my perspective, the allies are fine as they are <@,@> of course I was on a blaster dealing primarily Lethal damage at the time; so that may have been a major factor. -
That's actually perfect hehe <^_^> It's one of the mental definitions I have for "Fantasy in Paragon" (and one of the reasons I've been doing a fair few more generally Magic themed arcs of late)
To lay out the requirements for "Fantasy in Paragon" a bit better:
Does your arc involve -
Fantasy warriors displaced in time?
An ancient evil rising below Paragon City?
A hero from before firearms were the norm, returned to life and needing a hand learning the ropes of the modern hero business?
Fantasy races suddenly appearing within Paragon City? (This could be for all sorts of reasons - a splinter group of the Trolls that calls themselves "The Orcs" for example; or it could be multidimensional goblins, the undead rising in the streets, Elves, Dwarves of Fae requiring help with a problem in the city... etc...)
A reasonable level of swords and/or sorcery (the former is preferred to be a part, but not a requirement)?
A yes to any of the above pretty much meets my requirements. <^.^>m
I should have explained what I meant by Fantasy in Paragon a bit more thoroughly in the first post <~_~> my bad!
So yeah, when you get that arc done, let me know, I'll gladly give it a shot! -
*nod* I remember all this hehe <^_^>
I remember when there were no respecs; if you made a mistake, you were stuck! (Reroll noob!)
I remember when you couldn't change your costume/there was only one slot. I also still remember what the original options were. It still blows my mind looking at the costume list we have now, as opposed to pre-I1.
I remember when the first new costume pieces were added in I4 (other than capes of course) and they were "going to destroy the game cause they are too anime" (allow me to lol a moment at that one >.>
I remember when Katana was, animation-wise, identical to broadsword. It was so bad that I re-rolled as a Dark Melee scrapper <'x'>;
I remember when Storm Kick from Martial Arts involved kicking the opponent about 10-times before finally stopping; as opposed to the ultra-quick attack we have now.
I remember when Auras were added, and some of the hilariously weird choices people would come up with just because "ZOMG AURAS!" (I did it too, not blaming anyone!) -
Oi, forgot to update for a few days <@.@>
To be honest, there hasn't been much *to* update.
Lily Knight is now level 12 with a full suite of DOs; and a new costume (thanks to some old Halloween Salvage)
Doing *very* well on tickets having leveled from 2-12 almost entirely via architect.
Things I'm noticing:
1) - Leveling in Architect is slower than normal leveling at low levels; I think this is because custom enemies can be quite a bit more challenging (ie: more debt) - no 'end cap' xp - and due to the large number of arcs I end up quitting early due to annoyance; sometimes long periods between actual play, as opposed to just searching.
2) - Finding a good arc to run is tough. Finding a good arc when you're looking for something as narrow as Fantasy in a Superhero game is extremely tough! That's expected of course (I'd be lying if I said I believed this would be a walk in the park heh <@.@>
That said, I'm pressing on. Hopefully I'll have a new review soon - unfortunately with one exception (that I'm waiting to review for a couple reasons - it's quite good though) most of what I've played lately has been... things I would rather not a recommendation to. (I've decided that I will only post arcs that I recommend, even if it's only a mild recommendation.)
Since I don't have a review for you this time, I'll post a picture of Lily Knight's second costume, as I'm rather proud of it:
Second Costume 1
Second Costume 2
As always, looking for arcs to try! First post has the details of what I'm looking for, but as a loose reminder - anything fantasy based, be it Fantasy in Paragon with Orcs running loose in the city, or genuine "You're in a fantasy world with dragons" type fantasy; historical arcs are also welcome, and as always Eastern fantasy is just as welcome as Western fantasy.
Hopefully I'll have something new worth reviewing soon! -
<^_^> I didn't know there was a thread for this here!
I already sent my feedback in-game; but I wanted to note here - Loved this arc! Lots of fun to be had with it >_<
I enjoyed it enough I actually gave the character that played it a Panda costume <'x'>; -
<;_;> Ex *sniffle*
You will be much missed <_ _>;; Take care of yourself, and be well wherever you find yourself! -
Arc: A Warrior's Friend
Arc ID: 16689
Author: @Yumii
Number of Missions: 5
Alignment: Heroic
Description: Infernal requests your help in thwarting a Praetorian attack on Salamanca. When the reason is revealed you and Infernal must fight your way across Battle Maiden's homeworld of War Earth to stop a sinister plot from unfolding! [AV/EB at the end]
====
It's essentially my attempt to expand the lore surrounding Battle Maiden and War Earth, since in the entire canon of CoH they get... what, 1 mission? If you've played that mission (Save the Warrior Village, Maria Jenkins arc) you may also recognize a couple tidbits I tossed in.
I re-vamped her enemy group, since they're Issue-1 old, back before weapon customization or shields; not to mention before a lot of the much better costume pieces like Roman and Valkyrie became available.
I didn't update Battle Maiden herself though, both for space reasons and because ultimately, I'd rather leave the character herself up to the devs to alter.
It's a long one though, just as an FYI; and the third mission is a bit long particularly (it's an outdoor map with 2 "Find Ally" bits - but they should be relatively easy to find, as should the destructables you need)
Obviously it's one of those "Only if you have the time" kind of things >.> -
Just a couple simple ones:
Allow the Arabian Scimitar for Dual Blades, and the normal Scimitar for Broadsword. The latter for cutlass/cavalry sabre wielders, the former for Dervishes and the like.
Also still would like to see a claymore or similar 2handed sword for Katana - the animations wouldn't be perfect, but unless we're liable to see a 2handed sword set (doubtful I think); I'd like to at least have the option. -
Also agreed with others - leave the 2 capes please.
Yes, they clip a bit, but damn do they look good most of the time.
I'd also like to mention that I'd love to be able to get the High Collar cape without the collar - just the mantle (the shoulder part) - but no the actual collar. -
Arc ID - 26173 - Dungeoneering I: Standard Action
This is an arc I consider myself lucky to have come across honestly - it was 4-stars and has been rated 31 times; which means that a casual observer might consider it crummy.
I took a chance though, because when you're looking for content within such a narrow spectrum for a character, you tend to have to take what you can get.
Me? I loved it. It's not that it's 'the most amazing thing ever' or anything - but if you've ever felt look a good old fashioned Dungeons and Dragons module in CoH? This is for you.
Pros - Familiar friends and enemies - A dwarf fighter, Elven ranger, and Halfling rogue; even without knowing much about them you 'get the gist'. Orcs and goblins are the enemies - and again, easy to figure out without too much thinking.
Also the writing style is very amusing - it actually plays out like a D&D session minus the usual BSing that goes on around the table. You have a narrator, who's text is always grey, and color coded text for the Party Member's lines. It's easy to get to reading and ignore that, technically you're still standing in front of the village elder who hired you, rather than being at the tavern before the next outing.
The story even opens with a Thank You for purchasing Dungeoneering I(TM) from RRR. The end asks you to buy Dungeoneering II(TM) to continue the adventure.
The end boss fight is also brilliant - I'm not going to give it away, but let me just say you might just find yourself incredibly impressed! I was at least, it gave me an idea I'd never even considered before; and will be stealing for certain.
Cons - Although most of the dialogue is fine, and occasionally quite funny, the Orcs seem... incredibly out of place frankly. They seem too smart compared to what we know of Orcs in traditional fantasy settings (which this very much appears to be).
The other problem is the party - they are... well they're far too powerful. If you let them, they'll kill everything once you pick them up.
This isn't a problem for mission 1 and the early half of Mission II - but once you've got 2 of the 3, or in the 3rd mission, all 3, you easily steamroll everything; including the final boss.
Now I normally don't mind bulldozing things, but I sent feedback suggesting toning the allies down a bit - they're set to EBs and I think Extreme/Extreme or at least Hard/Hard. Bosses at Hard/Hard or even lower can be useful allies.
This problem might have been alleviated if the mobs themselves were tougher, but they're actually quite easy overall - a fact I am grateful for.
Overall -
I highly recommend it. It has flaws without doubt, but it's brief, and if you want a little D&D style nostalgia, this is probably the best place to get it that I've seen!
As I find more swords and sorcery, I shall continue to post and review them here <@_@> probably not in as great a detail, but hey, if it strikes me, it strikes me right?
Also, feel free to submit your own fantasy themed arcs from any culture you like - even ones set in the modern day in which fantasy comes to Paragon. (Orcs rampaging through Kings Row for example would be a fine fit!) I'm always looking for something to play with Lily Knight, who is now level 10.
As always, if you leave an arc, please leave a bit of an idea of the difficulty of the arc as well - I won't mark you down for difficulty unless it's excessive for the level range it's designed for; but I won't know what it's designed for if you don't tell me!
<^_^> anyway, happy gaming! -

One of my arcs got cut off a few pages back >.< just now noticed. Re-added. -
Hey now, my knife is 3ft long and has killed giant robots... >.> I'd be more worried for the schmuck with the gun to be honest.
-
I don't think you're wrong there Neuronia *BUT* you seem to be forgetting a few things here.
1) This is Venture's thread, and his reviews. They don't claim to be definitive - they are things as Venture sees them. You don't have to agree with them - I certainly don't in many cases; heck there's a reason I haven't, and likely won't be asking for reviews from him; largely because our opinions seem to be dead opposite on many things. (It'd be like going up to a guy who hates Star Trek while wearing Vulcan ears, a red shirt and a little upside down V badge and asking him to rate your costume.)
That doesn't mean Venture's opinions are wrong though - they're his opinions, and apparently valued by many folks. Some of whom really just want someone who's willing to take a long hard look at their work, which the average player isn't going to do. Most folks seem to just rate and go on, not even offering feedback. That's fine, except that you cannot improve your writing without criticism; meaning those who know they could do better, but aren't sure where the problem lies, find someone like Venture who's willing to do the grunt work extremely valuable.
2) Vote Swapping - Just because it's happening all over the place does not make it right, nor desirable.
I'd be more willing to just let sleeping dogs lie, but to have someone change their vote on an arc they probably didn't even play based on someone's honest criticism of their own arc... is frankly ridiculous.
Especially in this case, where he went into a thread specifically for reviews, by someone who is well known to be a bit of a hardarse when it comes to fiction... and asked for one.
3) Although I agree that the standards some people have for Architect are extremely high - even to what I'd call ridiculous at times; ultimately that is their call. We've all got our standards, some more lax than others.
Myself, I tend to give out 5 stars relatively often; my criteria being: A) Is it fun? B) Is it spelled/written well? C) Does it make sense? (Or in the case of a cracked-out comedy that isn't intended to make sense, a double dose of "Is it fun?")
That doesn't mean someone else's much harsher criteria are wrong. Neither does it mean someone else's much lighter criteria are wrong. We've all got our own metric, and those of us who do the writing need to accept that.
===
Now, I don't think this means Green Dwarf needs to be blackballed forever, but I think he needs to learn a lesson from this; primarily that retaliating for a low review is flatly wrong.
Look - if you rate an arc in the first place - give it what it deserves.
Period.
That's it.
Lowering your vote later after a poor review is just bad form; and I don't care what excuse you try to use to justify it; that's exactly what it is. It's petty, its retaliatory, and it is not acceptable.
And I wnat to add this:
It does not matter how many fantastic reviews you have gotten. It does not matter how much praise you have accrued. *Someone* is going to dislike what you've done. That's the nature of creativity - it's subjective.
Heck - I'll give an example:
On test, my A Super Team Was Born arc was 5-star with something like 170 votes and Dev's Choice. It was a MONSTER as far as test was concerned.
Venture I think gave me a 3 star? Oh well. That's his opinion and I'm perfectly willing to accept that.
Another example:
In the same day I received the following two tells:
"Very imaginitive! Great idea!"
"Boring, unimaginitive. Blah."
Same day, same arc, different players, 180 degree different viewpoint.
You cannot expect everyone to love your stuff, even if many people do. It just will not happen. Letting yourself acknowledge that relieves a whole lot of stress.
Hall of Fame and Dev's Choice are not guarantees. I used to have 2 Dev's Choice back on test - I now have none. Oh well - such is life. I'd love to someday hit Hall of Fame, but I'm not going to hold my breath for it either.
The above is not flaming anyone either I'll add - I know damned well how frustrating it can be to suddenly go "WTF?!" after a bad review or comment. Even being able to calm down later - yes, I still get annoyed when I see a negative review; especially one without any suggestions on how to fix whatever was broken (or worse, not even telling me what was actually broken).
Just the same - if you're going to create and put it out there for people, you have to expect at least a reasonable level of negative feedback.
Note: I said reasonable. If someone is stalking you over it (I've had this happen in other regards) - then that is not reasonable; but if someone simply says "I don't like it" - well... that's to be expected.
Move on and do your best, you can't force anyone to think what you want them to. Instead - please yourself, please your fans (ie: the people telling you they liked the arc 'but maybe this could be tweaked') - pay attention to critics who aren't jerks (the guy who tells you they didn't like your arc because of X or Y, but isn't actually flaming you about it) - and ignore the bozos who tell you "You Suck!".
Sorry to barge into your thread with such a diatribe Venture; I wouldn't if I didn't think some folks needed to hear it, even if I don't know that they'll listen.
I'll shut up and go back to cranky old writer mountain now <x.x> -
Incorrect actually, on TEST it was 100, on Live it is 1000.
Also, it requires a 5 star average - rounded up.
That means 4-stars are counted as 5-star if the average leans 5-star; thus to say a "4.5 star" rating is completely reasonable. -
I think I'ma run this again tonight >_< it was fun the first time, and the changes sound decent.
-
He was in the game during the Cathedral of Pain's limited time active - there were also some demorecords made I think >.<
-
Alright, so I've decided to drop a couple reviews I've found of things in-game so others can check them out if they have similar interests >_<
I've decided not to give star ratings here for a number of reasons, the biggest of all is not wanting to have to justify them to anyone else, since what rates 5 to me might be only a 3 to you, or vice-versa; and frankly, just a quick look at a star number won't necessarily be an accurate metric for if you'll like it.
Arc ID 42241 - The Battle for Happily Ever After
Review:
This arc is pretty straightforward overall - you are asked by Prince Aled, who is apparently nobility in a "tiny speck of a country" to rescue his Princess Lilianna from some 'dwarfs', who are making her cook and clean for them.
Sounding familiar already? >.> It should. The arc is a take off of the Snow White story - several minor twists, but ultimately quite a bit of fun from my perspective.
The arc uses stock enemies, and I was able to solo it on Heroic at level 5; though the end EB was a challenge. I still managed to beat her after a couple trips to the hospital and some extra Inspirations. You do get help on the last mission, but the allies are Lts., so they aren't overwhelming.
It's also relatively short - only 3 missions long; so it's something you can work in before work or during another "I have to wait for something, but don't have a ton of time" periods.
<^_^> Ultimately I thought it was enjoyable, simple as it was.
Arc ID 36433 - Get Ye Flask
This is a single mission, and even at that it's rather short.
Ultimately, I took it for what it was: A fun homage to D&D and nights of drinking Mt. Dew and eating cheetos whilst killing imaginary critters for treasure.
The plot is... thin; but it never makes a pretense of being particularly plot heavy either.
Enemies include Orcs, Troglodytes, and a Red Dragon. Even the EB at the end was relatively easy on Heroic though - he killed me the first time, but some inspirations left him very dead. (Again at level 5).
Ultimately - I recommend this for when you just want to bash some heads and not think particularly hard; I also imagine it could be a great deal of fun with a team designed around D&D themed characters. -
*sigh* the poor VEATs <;_;> Love everything else about em, but the story... oh dear. <x.x>; (That's not a bad idea at all if you ever get a free slot and the inclination Venture; if you do I'd love to give it a shot!)
-
Okay, so I have an admission -
SuperHeroes have never been at the top of my list of geek enjoyment. In fact they're relatively far down - though I do still enjoy them.
Just the same, I'm more a fantasy/sci fi nerd in the end <~_~> what can I say? However most fantasy MMOs... to be blunt, stink on ice; and even those I do enjoy are quite restrictive compared to COH.
So, having played a couple very cool medieval themed missions; I figured "Ya know what? That Atlas Park Defender idea wasn't a bad one at all; and I've got a twist on the equation..."
So here's what I'm asking folks - <@_@> Post any and all medieval/fantasy creations you make with Architect here.
This includes alternate dimensions,
Fantasy-in-Paragon,
Intentionally "Game-in-a-Game" fantasy (Ie: stuff that only makes sense viewed through the lens of Architect as a VR system)
- Basically long story short, if it's got a strong fantasy flavor, with wizards and dragons, soldiers in plate, mystic artifacts and similar; let me know here! I don't exclude eastern fantasy either; even though my character who'll be doing all this is a western Knight type; Samurai and Ninja are perfectly welcome! Also anything designed to be semi-historical is perfectly cool too (so if you re-create the Battle of Agincourt, let me know!)
Same goes for other fantasy-esque themes, like Roman or Greek or Viking mythology. You get the idea by now right? >_<
I ask only one favor <'x'> Please let me know what level range it's designed for! The character I'm playing is currently level 5; and I want to go through Architect primarily. I'm willing to put up with significant difficulty; but at the same point - I'd like to be able to win!
I primarily solo as well; so make sure you mention if it's a Team oriented one - I'll probably try to do it with my SG eventually in that case.
The character in question:
Lily Knight, a Broadsword/Shield Scrapper.
Lily Knight 1
Lily Knight 2
I'll try to give relatively detailed reviews, but I won't promise it will be as detailed as what Venture is doing, as I'm not going to try to be a professional critic here hehe <@_@> (Much respect for Venture for doing that, but I don't have it in me frankly!)
I'll also occassionally drag her out into the real world for unlocks - especially the Roman gear once high enough. Otherwise though, it'll be all AE all the time! <@-@>m
Anyway - let the posting of arcs begin! <^_^>m -
Bah, I love TVTropes ><; then again I'm a writer <,<; it's fun and educational both!
