Something /Sonic would be good (any of the control sets with a melee pet would be a good fit for soloing). Sonic's debuff aura would be great for putting on one of the Beast pets.

I mostly share Chill's opinion, but I'd put Demons slightly over Bots. Both sets are durable and do good damage (Bots are better at AoE vs. Demons being better at ST), but the Prince's control abilities really put the set over the top. He can solo a boss without any MM support simply by virtue of being able keep it held 80% of the time (100% with an enhancement).
My preferred combination is Demons/Dark. Dark is awesome with almost any set, but I feel that it really meshes with Demons by stacking with their existing durability to make them super tough. -
Quote:I'm not asking for a list of specific things not to do, because I agree that that's cumbersome for all the reasons you listed. Jack had, at one point, put forth his "one hero equals three minions" dreck, with the idea being that powers would be balanced around that. While I think that particular number was moronic, it's basically the same type of thing I'd like to hear from the developers.Because players always have and always will pervert and exploit any letter or hard(-coded) rule they're given. The Devs have that much clue, at least. (If they didn't before the AE launch, they sure do now. Hell, there were players taking the devs to task for not knowing this and for showing the players any trust at all, making it all THEIR fault.)
EDIT: Another reason that the Devs can't give you a list of all the things you shouldn't do is that they probably literally can't conceive of some of the (ab)uses that the clever and unprincipled might put their tools to, until someone actually does. They give us a set of paints, and people start huffing them or covering the walls with graffiti.
"Well, why did you give me a car if you didn't want me to run people over with it? You should have said something, or made it impossible for me to do that! It's not MY fault, and I shouldn't be held responsible."
If they say 1-50 should take 20 hours and will make changes to any/all game systems to achieve that, that's great. I may not agree with the idea of 20 hours, but I would be fully aware that anything which gets me to 50 under that time is in danger of being nerfed. If I abused something which got me to 50 faster than that, I'd have no basis for complaint when it got fixed. -
This is kind of the point. The rules are not defined. By nerfing things without explanation, they're effectively creating a law that's all spirit and no letter. If Posi were to come out and say "going from 1-50 in anything less than 20 hours of constant gameplay is out-of-bounds and will get something nerfed", then far fewer people would have a problem with these changes. Plenty of people might disagree with the numbers (as with MARTy), but there'd be no grounds for any exploit/not-exploit argument.

Quote:Permissible is not the same as officially condoned. We've got an entire topic about farming here; if it was considered an actual exploit then we wouldn't be having this conversation here.True.
And if speeding was wrong, it would be impossible to drive faster than the speed limit, or a cop would instantly appear and arrest you when you did. Right?
The overall pattern of enforcement - nerfs, bans, etc - is fairly clear, at least to me. The fact that this enforcement is not total or instant does not, IMO, make the behavior permissible or officially condoned. It just means they haven't gotten around to smacking you yet, or don't have the manpower to arrest everyone who speeds.
Now, if you're saying that they're just enforcing their "vision", maybe you're on to something. Then again, using the developer's vision as an argument here does not work when you are simultaneously arguing against their vision in other things, like the iTrials reward fiasco. The player base has already had its share of divine vision interfering with people's preferred styles of play, and I had hoped that that had left along with Jack. Maybe when the vision suddenly changes to "maximize revenue in the F2P model," player preferences fall by the wayside.
This whole thing would not even be an issue if the developers would just come out and tell us whatever the metric is that we're supposed to be conforming to, but perhaps "we want it to take two months to hit 50 so you'll buy XP boosters" and "we want it to take forever to fully-slot your Incarnate powers so you'll keep your sub up" are not palatable statements to NCSoft's marketing gods. -
The only definition that matters is that of the developers. If they define farming as an exploit, then we wouldn't be allowed to discuss it here on the forums.

Nerve alpha gives a defbuff boost as well as accuracy, so that's an option if you want your bubbles to be more effective. If you're already softcapping, though, then it's hard to go wrong with Musculature.
-
If you're willing to roll up another MM, it's hard to go wrong with Demons/Dark/Soul. High damage from demons, high durability from Dark (from -ToHit debuffs). Put some sets in there, grab Musculature Radial alpha (Radial for extra -ToHit), and you are basically invincible.

Fire armor is perfectly survivable in normal content with a Brute, provided you get the suggested slot bonuses. I would recommend slotting Consume for recharge and accuracy (mostly recharge), instead of putting in a set.

Quote:So... MMs are top-tier just as long as all the other ATs fight at a huge disadvantage?Take your pick of the litter, and show me any other AT on SOs that can solo +0x8 maps and AVs.
Then try to repeat the quoted statement.
I'm a big fan of MMs, but any semblance of uberness (when compared to other ATs) went out the window with the Invention system. Masterminds just don't get as much benefit from IO sets as others do. They're still fun to play, they can still solo most things in the game, but they're not going to be winning many min/max contests.
To answer the OP, Mercs are perfectly playable, but they're not ideal. You can solo most of the game's content with them, though you'd probably have little choice in secondaries if you wanted to do stuff like soloing AVs. -
Most of the defensive sets excel at a particular type of damage with reduced effectiveness at others. Since tanks have higher numbers to begin with, the "reduced" effectiveness is still pretty darn effective. This means that you could make a tank with almost any set and still be very survivable in ordinary content.
With scrappers and brutes, you will need to be a bit more choosy with your set, especially with just SOs. Shield Defense, Super Reflexes, Invulnerability, and Willpower provide great defenses for normal play, while you'd probably want to stay away from something like Fire Armor.
Tanks will always be more survivable given the same defensive set, but for the type of play you're planning on, brutes and scrappers will do very well. -
You can hit the single-target animation cap without Hasten, so whether or not you have it would depend on if you mind juggling the extra clickie (and spending the extra power +slots) to have Footstomp and Fireball up a second sooner.

Quote:Ah, that makes sense. If you're say, level 50 and choose a 15-19 Bronze/Gold roll you'll get the maximum level of said recipe. Say you roll a 25-29 Gold and get a Miracle - if you're level 25 you can get a lvl 25 miracle, or a 33 if you're 33 - if you're 50 you'll get a lvl 40 Miracle because it's the max level the Miracle recipes go.

Quote:I'm not very experienced at farming stuff, so forgive me if I'm asking the obvious, but why stop at 33? You can always exemp down for 33-ish TFs, and the ticket vendor has a level slider for buying enhancements/doing recipe rolls.I leveled a CEBR to 24 in 1:30 I think. But the farming is far riskier than I can do on my cheaply built SS/Fire/Mu (since I use AoEs only and put sets like mocking beratement and Aegis he has 20%ish fire def, so it's easy to softcap - plus he has spiritual, reactive, pyronic, ageless, all t3 so it's kinda safe even without purples at +4/x8).
I'm thinking about keeping the catgirl because I love elec armor and she's a fun toon, but my initial intention was to lock her at 33 for recipes.
What do you guys suggest for a 33 farmer? A claws/Fire or Elec/Fire looks good to me because of Burn, Spin, Healing Flames... I'm having trouble coming up with a build that doesn't eat up too many slots (tried an Elec/Fire, slotting Jacobs, Chain Induction, Thunderstrike and LRod properly till 33 is kinda impossible) -

I want NPC models for our pets.
[/ QUOTE ]
This. Most of the "humanoid" pets already use NPC animations for things, so it shouldn't be too difficult to at least allow for swapping the existing model for another one.
I can believe that AE-style custom pets would be a lot of work, but model swapping? You can do that in demo mode easily, with no negative effects as long as the model types are the same. -
You said you'd welcome IO slotting tips, so I've got some.
Any attack that is at least 5-slotted should get Crushing Impact. Take all the set enhancements except the Acc/Damage, because you won't be needing the extra accuracy. I have 3 CI sets in my powers at lvl 36 (Haymaker, Punch, and KoB), and I have 95% overall chance to hit against +5 mobs. If it's a 6-slotted attack, fill the last slot with an end reducer or recharge reducer, depending on your overall recovery. 5 CI enhancers will grant extra HP, as well as 7% global accuracy and 5% global recharge buffs. It's also readily available, for the most part.
For Foot Stomp, I plan to eventually 6-slot it with Armageddon, but that's not until lvl 50. Until then I'll just use non-set IOs (3 Damage 3 Recharge).
For Heightened Senses, you can try Luck of the Gambler, or put a couple Serendipity enhancers in it if LotG is hard to find/too expensive.
For your resistance powers, you'll want to get the Steadfast Protection +3%def into one of them, and 2 of the Impervium Armor set into all 3 powers (for the recovery bonus).
That's all I've got for now. -
I found the jet to be awesome. As a villain, it let me jump high enough to clear the invisible wall around Breakout, and actually fight in the arachnos/guard/longbow battle (and get my butt kicked).
