  1. I am looking at ways to optimize my earth/storm and was trying to make the best use of two slots in quicksand.

An Enzyme would increase it's defdebuff but not its recharge. Would a Membrane increase its defdebuff as well as its recharge rate or has that long been fixed?
  2. Thanks for all the input, guys. I'm now leaning towards Katana (or claws,.. well, probably katana).

One thing, does Energy Torrent cause redraw?
  3. I do WW a lot yes, but I dont believe I've ever crashed while I'm at the market itself.
  4. Managed to [finally] get the game not crashing with an OpenGL error... but now, it will stall out after several hours. It felt like a memory leak to me but I didn't think much of it since it took a while to build up to a crash.

Out of curiosity, checked the memory usage during the most recent crash... yep, signs point to a memory leak with 1.6Gb memory being used.

Is this a known issue? Is it a game or video driver issue?

    Using Win7 64bit Professional.
  5. No matter the build, spines won't be a "beast" against AV's.
  6. So it's that time again, Pinky, time to delve into yet another melee AT and make it the most devastating thing this side of Rhode Island.

I love DA, it's so dynamic. OH NO! SCRAPPER ABOUT TO DIE.. full health - the battle is always keeping you on your toes. It's such a complete set (though it does lack in energy resistance ).

Anyway... Once upon a time, I think in i9, I made a spines/DA and it was hella fun. I've been thinking of what to again pair with DA and I can't make up my mind Katana is nice but lethal damage + robots sort of turns me off. FM seems powerful on paper, but the attacks are somewhat slow and lack a scrappery slice'em dice'em skewer'em feel. ELM doesn't have enough ST damage for my tastes and Thunder Strike is god-awful slow.

How's MA? I don't recall ever leveling an MA; the AoE looks comparable to other sets'.

    How's Katana versus Dual Blade?

I think I'm on the fence amongst Katana, DB, Claws, MA, and just re-rolling another spines (despite lacking ST).
  7. Temps are fine, idle @38 C, CoH load @50ish C. At least it doesnt crash often; like I said, once or so per very long play session. Odd thing is, there's seemingly no pattern - I can be in the midst of chaos vying to help the team survive, or simply moving around inside the university.

    Very irritating.

Then you find out that some powers don't necessarily synergize well in terms of effects, like Frostbite and Ice Slick.

Then you get good enough at control that it doesn't matter that you use them both together because the mobs are locked down hard enough, usually by turning on something like Arctic Air or Grav Anchor procs.

Then you find out that you have so much control anyhow that the only point to all of those great control powers is to herd as much as you can to a single kill point or over aggro to the team so you can get things done faster by doing more AoE damage.

Then you wind up combining all of that together in order to try and kill the team since there is almost no chance of the team wiping unless you deliberately try to get a whole mob full of +2 and up Bosses and EBs into a tight little ball of aggro. Otherwise you'll fall asleep.

Spamming the EQ and Ice Slick is a great place to slow the mobs and not just knock them down in order for you to 'deposit' herds where the team is busy defeating them so you can grab more mobs. Using AoE immobs is just part of the fun.

Usually you have problems when you work with people of varying experience. IE. seasoned and jaded veterans shouldn't be avalanching newbs with 6-8 mobs in a little tiny blob...

    ...unless you have Vengeance/PBU/Fallout....

the rez is optional. Just kidding.
    I like this
  9. And, the result is... no dice.

Crashed earlier after installing the older driver. Sigh. Well, if nothing else, it's weak excuse for me to buy an ATI 5870 card.
  10. As stated, there was no tornado being used in any of the instances.

If things are under control, of course you want more damage, so tornado + non-stop immob is an option. But if there's no tornado being used and/or the setting is still dangerous, why would you -kb on top of a knockdown power?
  11. Very very overkill imo... you could skip the fitness pool altogether if you go Body considering health is "only" 40% base regen and you'd have 3 powers freed up. It really depends on whether you have high priority powers you'd like to fit instead of the fitness pool.

Fire is nice but I personally hate redraw - it's always nagging at me on my mace/sd brute.
  12. I've seriously begun keeping a "list" of controllers I don't want to team with... what compels someone to see a big pile of flopping enemies and immediately think to themselves, "now would be a good time for some AoE -kb!"

I mean, sure, when they're lowbies, they might feel it's one of the few things they can do for dmg, but 30+?? Really?? There's plenty of things to do on a team as a controller besides ruining another controller's mitigation and not providing any of your own... You think they'd take a clue when they see the tank doing fine and immediately get pummeled after application of AoE immob... or, at the very least, when they are near always faceplanted because of starting a fight with that immob as soon as the other controller lays down knockdown.

No, I'm not talking about disorient + immob ghetto hold. I'm talking about non-stop application of -kb when there's ice slicks, earthquakes, and freezing rains in the mix. Surely I'm not the only one that considers this imbecilic... And no, there was no tornado in the mix to require it.

The best part is when the controller in question is themself an earth/ice primary.
  13. Alrighty, uninstalled 195.62, ran driver sweeper, and installed 191.07... if I don't reply again, you'll all know it worked

    Thanks everyone!

edit... well, it's certainly alt-tabbing a lot more smoothly !
  14. Hmm, thanks for the info, hobbit. I don't like changing video drivers because Nvidia is inconsistent at best when it comes to aspect ratio scaling (monitor doesnt have it). Might have to decide between the lesser of the two evils...
  15. Yes, Windows 7 is up to date, so far as I know.

It's important to note that the crash happens infrequently, maybe once per very long play session. Also, it seems that sometimes aero is temporarily disabled while running CoH and sometimes it isn't - somewhat inconsistent. Anyway, here is the helper log you asked for...

  16. I recently came back to CoH and I crash every now and again due to, what is stated to be, an Nvidia openGL driver error. I have an AMD quad core & nvidia 260gtx card, running on Win7 64bit.

I was wondering if this is commonplace? Is there any known hotfix for this problem? I am running driver version 195.62, which is the version just prior to the one released a couple days ago; I am foregoing an update for the time being because I stumbled upon a post saying the new driver has the same problem.

    Anyway... um, HALP PLS!
  17. If you like to be right up in the enemy's face, as your love for melee characters dictates, you cannot go wrong with storm. You have the tools to [intelligently] mold the battlefield to your choosing.

Any of the non gravity sets' immobilizes will also prevent kb for roughly 10 seconds. Gravity/ is a special case - the holds prevent the kb and the immob's do not.
  18. Boy, this is a hard decision !

Thanks for the opinions, guys, I really appreciate them. Have always loved that sig btw, Local

I *do* love being in melee range on all my toons, so that seems to restrict me to ice/ for this combo.
  19. Hey guys,

Just came back to the game after a year or so away and have been trying to nail down what I want to make. After waffling back and forth from a scrapper, defender, or controller, finally settled on a controller and was trying to decide between the two aforementioned power combos.

Which has better synergy with /Rad? I'd like to potentially "corner herd" using RI, so quicksand is very enticing... but I'd also love to work Arctic Air's magic in the midst of baddies (I'm pretty melee-centric and aggressive). Any opinions out there?

Of course, I'm also extraordinarily tempted to pair up Storm with either of these sets as well. But I've leveled a plant/storm and would like a bonafide new experience!

    Thanks
  20. Another thing to tack on:

Were the old forums a set pixel width? Could have sworn they were. I play at 1920x1200 resolution and it's annoying to have the forum's 3 columns spread across a 1920 width.

That combined with the huge statesman star, the bad background/text contrast, and the small post font size make everything a real eye sore.

These posts in this feedback discussion have been my only posts at all since the change. I can't bring myself to a) scroll through endlessly to find my previously favorite forums, and b) to deal with the bad color contrast.
  21. I bookmarked http://boards.cityofheroes.com/forumdisplay.php?f=547 to expand the forums and... well, I can see now why they did what they did with the default non-expanded version.

I scroll and scroll and then scroll some more, and the list of forum subsections goes on forever. The dumbo-sized statesman star icon makes the listing of forums 3x as long as it has to be.

Reminds me of one of the million bad console-> PC game ports. The ones where the interface is so comically big that a fat kid with walrus hands could mash their way through it.
  22. Is there an option to increase the default size of fonts? Normal un-modified text is too tiny. Chalk that up as another peeve.
  23. Hate them.

    1) The statesman star is too big and provides very little contrast with the titles of respective forums. That is to say, you focus on the star and not the forum title - it's very annoying.

edit: And along the same lines, the contrast between the white text and light blue background is horrible. Perhaps it's just me, but I find myself having to focus to read the text a lot more than on the old forums. Bad color scheme.

    2) As others have said, the default "no sub-forum" view does nothing but detract from usability. I for one, had to look in each forum, one by one, simply to find the dang general discussion again.
  24. Couple billion, Pum. Give or take. I'm not completely destitute on Justice; it's just that prices are nutty atm and I really loathe the idea of having to amass a small fortune to IO a build or three (to my liking) when I have infamy I don't need elsewhere.
