heh. I just posted this thread since I logged in on live and got hit by a couple of players that have been unable to log in on their computers. One of which forwarded 3 days of worth of email to me.
Deleting the named folder took care of both of players issues. -
Okay, here's something the support staff for CoH needs to be re-trained on.
Setup is this:- A player and a friend have two computers: Computer A and Computer B
- Player and Friend can log into game accounts on Computer A.
- Friend can login into account on Computer B.
- Player cannot login into account on Computer B.
- Open up My computer
- Depending on the OS installation: Go to C:\Program Files\City of Heroes :: C:\Program Files(x86)\City of Heroes :: /home/(username)/.cedega/CoH/c_drive/Program Files/City of Heroes/
- In this folder there should be a folder with the name of the player account that cannot login.
- DELETE this folder
- Try to login.

Stabilized versions of the 195 *nix driver are now floating around. The system killing bug from the earlier Windows 196 / *nix 195 release are supposedly fixed...
I think I'll wait for somebody else to test these first before updating my GTS setup... -
You don't get an update. The content is just "unlocked"
You can verify that the code was verified to your account by going to www.plaync.com and logging into your account.
Under Serial Codes Used on this Account there should be a list of serial codes applied with the last 4 numbers exposed. Booster packs are given the title Perk and will be listed like the following items.
Perk Sep 18, 2008 XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-1111
Perk Apr 18, 2009 XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-2222
Perk Oct 4, 2009 XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-3333
Perk Nov 12, 2009 XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-4444
If you bought from the www.plaync.com store and were logged in with your account, the code is automatically applied. You do not have to do anything on your end.

The costume parts will only show when you are making a new character, or visiting Icon to change an existing costume. You can now also talk to the Genetic Tailer to change size / gender. -
Quote:They will not for two very good reasons.I highly suggest holding out until the end of March if you can. When nVidia releases their new card(s), it will probably flux the market some; making the cards you're looking at drop in price (if history stays true).
- $499
- $699
Nvidia is only launching two cards, the GTX 470 at $499, and the GTX 480 at $699. According to the people who have already laid hands on the prototypes, the 470 is slower than the RadeonHD 5870, while costing a full $100 more MSRP.
The GTX 480, while faster than the existing HD 5870 gamers could buy last year, is only 5%-8% faster in "real" games. That's not exactly a huge performance delta... and certainly not worth an extra $300 dollars.
If you ARE into spending $700 on a graphics card, there's the RadeonHD 5970 4gb edition cards hitting the market: http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/video/d...cs_Boards.html
These dual-chip monstrosities on Crossfire supported games, don't just blow the GTX 480 out of the water. They'll do the equivalent of sending a ship parked in Pearl Harbor to Ohio State University by air mail.
From what we know, Nvidia's "mid-range" cards, the stuff to compete against the Radeon 57xx line-up, won't be landing until September or October at the earliest. Until, or unless, Nvidia gets their act together, price drops on existing RadeonHD 5000 series cards probably aren't in the cards. AMD and their vendors have no reason to lesson profits on what are the best (and only choices) for the gaming customer right now.Quote:If you're looking for a Direct X 11 card, I would hold out for several months. ATI's 5850 is selling ABOVE retail right now due to demand. The crazy part is the price keeps going up! Retail on the card is $259, while I paid $299. If you're just in it for CoX, Direct X 11 means nothing to you.
That being said, if AMD keeps on track for the RadeonHD 5000 series product refresh in June / July, we could see some price-cuts on the existing cards just to clear them out of the market.
Also, don't be too confident that OpenGL 3.2 / 3.3 / 4.0 support doesn't mean anything for CoH users. Television already has commented that they (the coders) are doing stuff in OpenGL that they apparently aren't ready to show yet. Given the timing of Television's comments and the release of the OpenGL 4.0 spec, there is the possibility that Paragon Studio's is planning to demonstrate Ultra Mode running against OpenGL 4.0 drivers from AMD for Going Rogue's July launch, which fits in with the expected date on AMD's RadeonHD 5000 product refresh.. and is enough time for AMD to get their OpenGL 4.0 drivers tested and ready for release. -
If you are under $120, Geforce GTS 250 or RadeonHD 4850: http://www.pricewatch.com/search?q=RadeonHD+4850 :: http://www.pricewatch.com/search?q=Geforce+GTS+250
If you are $120 - $150 : RadeonHD 5750: http://www.pricewatch.com/search?q=RadeonHD+5750
If you are $150+ : RadeonHD 5770 : http://www.pricewatch.com/search?q=RadeonHD+5770
If you don't mind touching just over the $200 mark, the RadeonHD 4890 is the best performance bang for buck going: http://www.pricewatch.com/search?q=RadeonHD+4890 Granted, it only does DirectX 10 / OpenGL 3.0... but in terms of frames per second on DirectX 10 / OpenGL 3.0 games (like CoH ultra mode), it'll match frames with Nvidia's DX 10 / OGL 3.0, the GTX 275 ($300 average) and GTX 285 ($375~$400 average). The 4890 will also trade blows with the RadeonHD 5850 in many games... while still costing near as makes no difference, $100 less. -
Quote:Doh. Now it makes sense. BTX chassis. Yeah. That was Intel's attempt to "build a better mousetrap." Personally, Intel should just stay out of chassis development.
em. No. the next tier down from the HD 5850 is the HD 5830, then the HD 57xx series of cards, the 5750 and 5770.Quote:I've done some quick looking about... and the next tier down from the HD5850 is the HD4850.
The HD 4850 is a (generation) back.
Okay. the difference between the 4850 and the 5850 is an order of magnitude on performance, and differences in features. The RadeonHD 5000 series supports DirectX 11 / OpenGL 3.2 and OpenGL 3.3.Quote:Unfortunately the XFX HD 4850 is a dual slot card... while HD4850 cards from other manufacturers are single slot with largish heatsinks ... like say from Gigabyte or Sapphire.
Would the 4850 run Ultra mode? I know XFX have a good name for quality and gaming grade goods... but what about the other brands? Is there any difference?
And what is the difference between the 4850 and the 5850? I'll probably find out next time I'm on... but beds calling.
The 4850's performance comparative parts in the current AMD line-up are the HD 5750 and HD 5770... but each of these generally costs a bit more than the old 4850.
Now, I can tell you that you don't want the "single slot" Gigabyte 4850's. I put some together for a client and his computer is even louder at full tilt than my own Dual-slot Sapphire 4850 crossfire system.
Now, as to whether or not the 4850's will run ultra mode? Well. It is the "starting point" for Ultra mode. Key-words: starting point
Until the NDA is lifted, or I figure out how to give performance figures without giving performance figures, that's pretty much all I can say on how the 4850 performs in Ultra Mode. -
Quote:interesting. I remembered the "monsters" using the same scale as GM's, but with a constant level con of one level lower than GM spawn.Nope.
That's Giant Monsters that use the 'purple scaling code.' In missions, they get downgraded to Monster rank which is basically a re-skinned AV. Which means that if the team is level 39, a level 41 (or maybe 42) Monster winds up being like a +3 or +4 AV. Which would not be a problem for most teams except the Titan does untyped damage which gets by all defenses unless you have the Ambrosia. -
Quote:I went into this in another post... here: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showp...&postcount=371Hey folks quick question...
I have an older comp. It's an HP a840 n. It's cpu is a single core AMD 3300+. It has been upgraded to 2GB of memory, and has a 600 watt supply. However my 7600gs vid card packed it up and caught on fire literally.
I was forced to slap in a pci 5200 card I had as a backup/testing card, which of course sucks badly. I am thinking of buying a Radeon HD 4670 1GB 128-bit DDR3 AGP 4X/8X HDCP Ready Video Card I saw on newegg. First of all, can my comp handle it. Secondly is this my best option since I don't have pci-e. Finally will this combo be able to run my game on better that "minimum" gfx mode?
Thanks
Sadly, the HD 4670 is the most powerful AGP card that can currently be bought on the retail market. Now, while I can't tell you how the card does, or more preciously does not perform in Ultra Mode without torquing Public Relations off, it is quite powerful enough to run the non-Ultra Mode options at maximum quality, and in relatively high resolutions. -
I guess my biggest problem with DP/Kin is the same problem I have with Fire Control / Kin. Fire Control on it's own is a busy set. Kinetics on it's own is a busy set.
Putting two busy sets together... and things fall apart. Very few Fire / Kinetic controllers know when to stop controlling and when to start being kinetics when on teams. They tend to be great at soloing, but then skip out on class defining powers like increased density.
In the same way, DP / Kin mixtures share the same problems. There's not really a skippable power in the Dual Pistols lineup. Sure, with enough recharge, you could get away with avoiding empty clips and taking just bullet rain for some of the AOE coverage. Sure, Fulcrum Shift + Hail of Bullets = fun.
Is it really a new hotness though? Judging from my test server experience? No. It's not.
Dual Pistols is really best when coupled with a "low" maintenance set like Sonic or Force Field, where the bubbles help make up for the lack of -mez protection that make getting in close to a fight a perilous event, and a focus can be put on slotting the DP powers rather than the buff / debuff powers. -

Quote:I dunno. I've got one of the Agena 9600's, and I've never had a problem with L3 cache. That's right is it a quad core, my mistake. So basically I would also need to upgrade my processor due to this bug?

You might note that the processor isn't actually coupled against a Socket AM2+ motherboard though. It's coupled against the older (and slower) Socket AM2 Asus M2R32-MVP. The reason is actually pretty simple. Of the Socket AM2+ motherboards I've bought, they've all been bought for SLI setups and used Nvidia chipsets that will not run the Phenom 9600 in dual-channel mode. So far there hasn't been a Socket AM2+ Crossfire motherboard that's matched the price / capabilities of the M2R32-MVP. I got it for $120 back in '07, around 6 or so months after it's 2006 launch. It's only been recently that AM2+ boards like this MSI CrossFire capable board have been dipping into the ~$100 market with equivalent features. Granted, I wouldn't buy it because it's an MSI and every MSI board I've had comes with a BIOS that makes Intel's look good by comparison. Anyways, currently, of the boards listed on Newegg, none of the AMD chipset boards explicitly say they'll do x16/x16 in Crossfire, with most stating they'll do x8/x8. That's a step back compared to a board that's over 3 years old.
Of the boards Newegg has that return searches of x16/x16, on the Crossfire side there's a DFI, which is normally good. Only the last DFI I bought was the LANPARTY JR X58-T3H6... and it won't run I7's in Triple Channel mode.
Then there's the ASUS M4A79T-D. Great motherboard. I put together one for a client. Only.. come one. $180? No. Just. No. That's Intel motherboard pricing.
Anyways, because of my lack of willing to pay Intel-ish prices for AMD motherboards that have the feature set of a 3+ year old motherboard, might be a factor on why I haven't seen the TLB issues that were reported to be in the Agena 9600 B2 revision. -
Quote:...It pays to do research and to research things you don't think of - like will the card you get actually line up with the holes in the back of my case.
I just received the XFX HD 5850 video card and a Zalman 600 watt power supply. The power supply went in no dramas. However when I went to install the video card the card wouldn't fit. If it was to go into the sole PCI-express slot on the mother board, it wouldn't fit the holes on the back of the case. And fitting the holes on case would put it into the PCI slot.... which the card wouldn't and shouldn't be fitted into.
ARGH!
So now I'm waiting to hear back if I can get a refund or exchange for a similar card which has the card mounted the other way around. But I really, really, Really wanted the XFX card.
So everyone, take warning: Do your research - will your card fit your motherboard and case.
any chance you could take a picture and show us what you mean by this? I'm as confused as Father_Xmas. -
what you have to remember is that while the Inspiration offers 100% resistance, your resistance cap is still limited: http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Resistan...age_Resistance
This means that the inspiration offers you 100% of your resistance, which is 90% on tanks, 85% on PB's and Shades, and 75% for everybody else hero-side.
The Eden trial is also currently bugged. The trial enemies always spawn as though the team were level 41, and you currently "need" a 39-41 to start the Trial. (this may have been fixed, but I haven't seen anything in the patch notes since I ran it about a month or so ago). Ergo, if you had a 39 or a 40 start it, you'll be 1 or 2 levels down from the level of the Trial.
Theoretically this shouldn't mean anything against the Titan as the critter is supposed to con as a monster and be equal level against all participants. In practice it means that the Titan's Crystal Blast and Foot Stomp can rip through those at 75% resistance with relative ease. You can't count on being soft-capped or having high defenses either because of the Monster +to-hit, and also because the Titan uses Salt Crystals.
Your best bet for fighting the titan is to have the tank try and keep the Titan faced away from the group. It helps if everybody has fly (take a moment and drop by the 'shard for a jetpack if you need it). If your team can stay out of the range of the footstomp and the tank can absorb the Crystal Blast, you should be fine.
And if you didn't take a tank... smack whatever scrapper told you "I'm a tank!" They are not.

Quote:Em. No. Not even close. It's also bugged, in that Jenkins isn't emoting assumepositionwall.
From everything I've heard, I firmly believe that the hero and villain tutorials will get a face lift, both to improve the new player experience (even if I have nothing against them, myself) and as part of the "improved 1-20 experience" that we've been promised, which I assume will at least involved the respective tutorials.
From what the developers said at Hero-Con, although it was subject to change, the existing Hero and Villain tutorials were not being changed. So far there has been no indication, either by a red-name post, nor by an off-the-record comment, that the existing tutorials are going to be changed or modified.
A completely NEW tutorial system was being created for Praetoria and Going Rogue, taking into account all of the mistakes the developers made with the Hero and Villain versions, as well as taking into account all of the gameplay changes since those tutorials were made. One of the case examples given was the IO system, which is "tutorialed" in the Universities of Cap and Steel Canyon. With Praetoria, this fundamental system will likely be tutorialed earlier, or will be a bit more extensive to better cover how IO's work.
The developers also flat out stated that the 10 base Hero and Villain archtypes would be able to choose from the new Praetoria tutorial, or the older Hero / Villain tutorials. The Hero and Epic Villain archtypes will have to go through the original Hero / Villain arcs, but will be able to swap morality alignments through the Praetorian alignment change.
The developers also flat out stated that those who chose to go through the Praetoria tutorial could elect to become a Hero without ever having a "Villain / Rogue" assignment, thus qualifying the 5 base Villain archtypes for the "I started a Hero and stayed a Hero" rewards. The opposite of the 5 base Hero Archtypes being able to go Villain without ever having had a Hero / Vigilante assingment was also clarified during the event.
What we don't know, either because the developers did not say, or it just hadn't been decided, is how the Praetoria Tutorial will interact with the Loyalist and Resistance Storylines. We do not know if there will be two separate Praetoria tutorials, with one pertaining to the Resistance and one pertaining to the Loyalists. We do not know if there is just one tutorial and players will have to select a starting Praetoria arc to work through. We don't know if Praetoria arcs will be based on the Hero City style where initial contacts are based on origin, and origin has an influence over what enemies you fight, or if the Praetoria arcs will be based on the Villain City style where you get the same contacts, the same missions, and the same experience over and over and over and over and over and over.
We do know that Praetoria, at minimum, is comprised of enough mission content to take a player from 1 to 20, and it was flat out stated by the developers that at level 20 the players would have to choose to be a Hero or a Villain, and go to the Rogue Isles or go to Paragon City.
This is what caused the confusion on the part of many players that Praetoria was just 1-20 content and that there was nothing else in the expansion, never minding the developers also explicitly stating there would be "morality" arcs in Praetoria to allow players to change sides. Such content that would obviously have to be post-20 in order for existing level 50 characters to swap.
Seriously, none of this stuff is exactly unkown. Almost all of it is found in this existing thread: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=196483 -
... part of me is sorry I opened this can of worms.
The other part of me is laughing too hard to care. -
Quote:Yeah... I don't think I made this clear enough.Read my mind exactly... For the UI crowd, push the windows and popups to one display, for FoV, a field of vision "slider" to shift the center POV to one side or the other so to not become crosseyed.
Or for triple-monitor folks, nevermind.
AMD Eyefinity, Nvidia 3D Vision Surround, and Matrox triple head are for 3 MONITOR SYSTEMS... not two monitor systems. This thread is about support for 3 or more monitors in an Eyefinity triple screen or Hex screen configuration.
If you do not understand what Eyefinity, 3D Vision Surround, or Triple Head do, please go watch this video on HardOCP: http://www.hardocp.com/article/2009/...hnology_review

Okay, with that clarification in place, here's why this thread is not about 2 monitors.
Bezels.
Those little black things that are on the border of your monitor. As I understand the centering of the camera the developers would have to break the rendering aspects in order to move your character off center from the camera position. This is not exactly an easy task to accomplish.
The advantage of triple screen wide, or hex screen (3 wide x 2 high), or enn screen (3 wide x 3high) is that the center focus point can still be positioned in a "middle" monitor. Hex, 3wide x2 high, can be a bit of a pain on FPS, but sometimes can be suited to RPG's where the character can be positioned in the middle of the bottom screen.
**
now, in theory, if Television and crew were to implement changes to the underlying engine to support triple, hex, and enn setups, it's possible that they could probably also implement offsets to support 2 wide monitors, 3 monitors wide with one monitor on top, 4monitors wide, or so on.
I really don't know.
I imagine though that supporting 3 screens wide would be an easier task out of the box, and doable this year. -
cutting to a black screen and rebooting would normally suggest an overheating error, which is certianly possible given the hardware in the computer.
One of the big problems with software temperature monitors is that they are not accurate. There's a reason most sites that do "serious" thermal testing run a lead right onto a processors heat sink. Even though your temp sensors in the computer may say everything's fine... it probably isn't. 70-72c is also really LOW for a GTX 295 that isn't being water-cooled. Okay, in all fairness, I've ever actually worked on 2 GTX 295's in the entire time they've been out... but on those two I had temp. reportings in the range of 170-185 F... and that's a bit above 72c.
Tracking down a thermal fail-over can be a bit hard to do though.
The easist way is to force a downclock on all components. You should be able to set lower clock speeds for the 295 through the Nvidia-Settings in the Windows control panel, and you should be able to downclock your processor in the bios.
If your system remains stable with lowered speeds, then there's your answer, you are reaching a thermal cut-out.
If the system still crashes with forced downclocks, we have other problems to think about. -
TCS: you need to read the current five posts at this link: http://www.gamenikki.com/g3/blogs/Ja...stIndexItem=45
(note: due to the tracking nature of the blog system in use, these 5 posts will change and be sorted further down the list) -
... *grumbles* no mention of Burn, Fiery Aura, or Dark Armor.
Anyways, I'm for a War Witch Task Force, providing we get some kind of answer for the above listed items. -

Quote:What bugs me about Ars's Article is that 3.2 is / was considered to be the "rough" feature parity equivalent of DX11. Most of the "big" DX11 features, such as Tessellation, made it into the 3.2 spec. From what I read on GLSL 4.0 and OpenGL 4.0, the changes to the spec go beyond what DX11 offers. Although, this wouldn't be the first time I've disagreed with Ars on their reporting as they've gotten basic history facts wrong.http://arstechnica.com/software/news...ure-parity.ars
Great if you understand this stuff. And if you don't (like me), well... its still a good thing.
****
Well, giving the timing of the 4.0 release and a certain developers Blue-Screen hijinx, it's possible we could see Apple, AMD/ATi, and Valve announcing Portal 2 as the first OpenGL 4.0 title at this years E3. Given Television's comments, part of me wonders if this game (our game) also has a 4.0 rendering mode in the works.Quote:Yeah, NVIDIA has missed the boat a bit on OpenGL changes, past and present. Which ATI cards have these revisions in place? (Just curious, thinking about a future build.)
Presuming this is correct... We may see the first cards from ATi with "full" OpenGL 4.0 support in the already known RadeonHD 5000 series refresh later this year.
***
There's also another question about how much of OpenGL 4.0 is gamer-applicable. As I said in the first post, OpenGL 3.3 was an expected point release, but an OpenGL 3.x ES version was also expected. One of the strengths on which OpenGL has made a comeback is the OpenGL 2.0 ES release, which basically does what 3DFX did with Glide several years ago: limit the specifications to those that are applicable to one aspect of OpenGL.
It's very possible then that an OpenGL 4.0 ES specification might wind up being feature-equivalent with DX11. -
I'll punt the puppeh! where's the puppeh I'm to punt!?
