    Forum question.

I've always wondered why cookies were secure, even when they were transmitted in plain text. I guess my instincts were right; they aren't. Thanks for that link, Katie V.
  3. Most of us just use the global channels. Depending on what server you are on, there are some channels you can join to increase the chances you get a team.

So that begs the question--what server are you on? Also, what times do you play?

You can also use the LFG and the Help channels, although since LFG is now active you should limit your team requests to that channel. Hmm... other ideas... we just had a thread on how to start... I'll see if I can dig it up...

Did he? I remember him saying that the Seattle web team set the time-out to 24 hours, which caused their software to throw "out of memory" errors, so they set it to 8 hours instead which they felt might be good enough. I don't recall anyone from Paragon Studios ever saying anything about security.

Not that it's terribly important, but the "security" meme popped up just recently here, and I don't recall it being mentioned by a dev. So I was just trying to clarify.

Personally, I assumed it was a resource issue. "We don't have time to get inside vBulletin and do it correctly, so we just hacked it." That's what I understood. But if someone has some more specific information, lay it on me.

Is that really true? Or is it just a rumor? I don't remember any developer saying this (including Zwill or any other member of community team), so I'm thinking this may just be rumor.

What Incarnate options have been released? I know Hybrid is the newest, but I'm not sure if I missed anything else between there.

You can check your Incarnate options by going to your tray, click on Powers, then above the window that comes up (on the "frame" part of the window), there's Attributes Monitor and Incarnate Abilities. Click on the latter, and browse the Create tab.

The wiki works too but the Incarnate Abilities window is your go-to source when in game.

Follow up: How do you unlock Incarnate?

Mender Ramiel in Ouroboros is your best bet. As mentioned, just grinding iXP or buying an unlock (in game, not real money) are possible, but the mission is fun if you are new.

I know there was once an option to save a costume, but now I can't see it... Help?

Go to a tailor (new feature: all trainers are now tailors. Go to Ms. Liberty in Atlas and ask her to adjust your costume). Below your "doll" in the costume menu there's a Save and a Load button. Click Save.

Three month old thread is a necro folks. Please don't do that. I'm pretty disappointed in long time members here who don't seem to be able to notice when they are necroing an old thread.
  8. Yeah, same picture, but looking at Ms. Liberty and the map too, Mathew is off to the left. On your mini map, (in the upper right in my picture) it's in the very center area of the zone map.

I don't think this would work, for exactly the reason stated above, i.e., broken PvP powers like Telekinesis. I would think that your typical PvE team with all their powers is going to steam-roll a typical NPC toon in about 5 seconds flat. Worse imagine what a team of 6 Fire/Rad controllers would do. Or PCs will complain about being griefed when the player-run NPC-toon runs off and hides and the PCs can't complete the mission.

No, while an interesting idea, I don't think this can work unless both sides are balanced for PvP, or it's going to be very un-fun for somebody and therefore a waste of effort for the developers.

Now, some NPC group like arachnos or malta against "weaponized" superheroes expressly designed for PvP, in a PvP scenario, yes, that works much better, but would also be a lot more effort for the devs. Plus, I personally would like to meet PvP players on even terms and play supervillains as their adversaries, not mooks.

This is a good example why I think the PvP game should be "weaponized." We won't bring our own characters into PvP, we'll bring a pre-built, pre-selected character that's designed for PvP and that we don't have to grind up. There's just no way to balance certain powers (like Telekinesis) without making them pointless.

    Quote:
2nd example: When Villains were introduced, the Stalker AT was capable of being completely invisible, and able to one-shot anything but a Scrapper or Tank out of the hero ATs. Literally, one shot kills coming from enemies you could not see coming.
There's lots of examples of one shot kills in other PvP games. In most Doom-style FPS, a rocket launcher will do this easily, and from range. In Team Fortress, the Spy is invisible and can back stab almost anyone as fast as a player can click their little mouse button.

These abilities are balanced *differently*. It's not just a damage vs. hit points equation. Spies for example are not actually that popular. They're hard to play and it takes quite a bit of skill to pull off well.
  11. I'm not 100% sure but I think that you can stop there, turn off the computer, and start there next time you begin downloading.

With just Stage 3 you should be able to start playing however. It will download in the background as you play.
  12. The hacking in Diablo 3 has gotten so bad that Blizzard announced that they are requiring the use of their Authenticator to access their Real Money Auction House. (Kind of the equivalent of the Paragon Store, I think.) It's going to cost $6.50 just to use that feature of their game now.

    http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/5594218404

The ideas presented here for "making stuff go faster" or whatever are nice for their interest and enthusiasm, but these are technical issues that are known to be not trivial to solve. "The client is in the hands of the enemy." (Who remembers where THAT quote is from?) Many of these ideas were tried and found to be trivial to defeat, from a security standpoint.
  13. The super important thing about smack talk is to ignore them. "Don't feed the trolls." You just can't let yourself to be goaded into giving them attention. OK 'nuff said there.

    Quote:
So let me ask, do you think changes to make the basic functionality of PvP more in line with the PvE game would make you more likely to give it a go?

I don't think so. PvE isn't balanced, not even slightly. So I'd expect a PvP experience using the same rules to just be a mess. Which the original PvP kinda was.

Mind you, the old rules were more fun than the current rules. But not enough to make me want to give PvP a try.

Repeating: Make maps with objectives. Ganking isn't fun.

My personal recommendation is to go for something much more like a regular FPS. Add aiming. Balance Hit Points and resistances in PvP so it's sane. Reduce the options available in PvP: this means no set bonuses, no inspirations and maybe no Enhancements either. Reduce the level ranges and powers available. Effectively "weaponize" your toon so it's much less customizable and more like a standard model; that will cut down on unpleasant surprises and give you less to learn in PvP.

    Quote:
It's a bit of a reversal but illustrates my point. So what kind of rewards would attract you to PvP without disrupting game balance as a whole?
Fun. I don't need drops, badges or anything else. I play Team Fortress for fun, why not CoH?

  15. This may only be a partial list:

    1. It's not fun.

    2. The maps aren't fun. (No mechanics besides gank the other guy.)

    3. Don't like grinding for PvP builds.

#1 May have a few other factors. The DR mechanic is not fun. I don't like movement-suppression. Certain PvE mechanics for radically shifting the balance like inspirations or set bonuses unbalance what little balance there is.

I've played games like Team Fortress 2 and Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Unknown. Those were fun. Guild Wars and City of Heroes, not so much. It's kinda hard to put my finger one why. I guess one reason is I like aiming and don't like the RNG.

That's not how it works though. Assuming the information posted in this thread is correct (I'm not doubting it at the moment, too many folks saying the same thing), the cap for pets, for example, is +300% bonus (as displayed in the Combat Attributes) or 400% if you include the 100% base damage in your calculation.

Enhancements aren't included because they're different for each power. But they're not "subtracted out," nor should they be. If the cap is +300%, that's the cap, and it doesn't matter where the bonus comes from. They CAN'T "pre-subtract" 100% for Enhancements because a power might not have any Enhancements at all. So enhancements just aren't considered in the Combat Attributes because they can't be meaningfully considered.

That the Combat Attributes shows us the cap also is just basically happenstance. It knows the cap, so it shows us, but when a power is used the system has to include enhancement bonuses, and it'll calculate the exact value then.

Yes, it might be nice if the Combat Window, for example, show us the buff calculation it used each time you clicked a power, but it's not to hard to multiply it out for yourself either.

Just to try to be crystal clear, all buffs are lumped together, then capped:

    min { 300%, Enhance% + Global% }
Then that value is used to calculate damage.

    Dam = Base * ( 100% + min { 300%, Enhance% + Global% } )
The Combat Attributes shows us the 300% number because it happens to know it, but the actual damage calculation uses the second formula, which Combat Attributes can't do until it has a power. And I don't think you should activate a power before Combat Attributes works, or show the values for the last power used or something. That would be even more confusing.

That's for global buffs. I don't think Enhancements are counted against that cap. Rather than debating it, I said I'd do some testing when I could. That'll answer the questing definitively.

    Exactamundo.
  18. It should be easy enough to test. I'll try to do one later today.

I was also thinking that the damage buffs, being "additive," should also benefit from Incarnate buffs which are not subject to ED. So the Enhancement part of that equation is now capped at about 135%, where 105% is what you can get with ED by massively over-slotting, and the 30% is the part of an Alpha Slot that isn't subject to ED.

The total boost should be around 435% now, or 535% times your base damage.
  19. We know. Scooped three days ago, in post #13.
  20. Fair enough. A lot of folks do forget that they can view their MM pet combat attributes, and they don't need another player to buff their pets. It's worth poking people a bit so they do remember. But I appreciate the thanks, and you are welcome.

I was thinking too that the Combat Attributes does not include Enhancements, just global bonuses. So even though I've got +95% slotted in a power, that won't show up in the Combat Attributes. Since Enhancements with ED cap out at around 95% to 100% or so, that might be where the wiki is getting their 400% number.

The cap shown in the Combat Attributes is just the global cap, I assume, and doesn't limit other means of boosting damage (or other attributes).
  22. I fed my Assault Bot reds until this happened. You could have tried the same thing if you were really interested.

    Damage cap is 300%.
  23. Meh, most of my server seems to be waiting on the fix. After that's in, MMs and whatever will be no problem.
