Quote:The problem is that you're looking at A-Merits in a vacuum. If they were the only way to get PVPIOs, then yes, the conversion rate would be WAY too low. They're not the only way to get them though. In fact, they're not even intended as the primary way to get them.I would think that common sense would suggest if it is indeed possible to have a build PvPIO'ed out in several months, have it taking 5+ years using A-Merits would mean the conversion rate for them is more than a little low. That's just me though.
Look at it this way. You now have one more way to get PVPIOs than you did before I18 hit. It may not be the most efficient way to get them, but it's not like any of the previous methods of getting them became invalid. -
This is kind of a cool idea. I'm not sure how you'd implement it, and I'm not sure how useful it would end up being, but the idea is cool.
Actually, it might be possible to do something kind of like what you're asking for (but easier) by essentially turning the target into a pet and giving you mastermind pet controls over it. It wouldn't be exactly what you're asking for, but those sorts of controls are already implemented in the game, and we already have the ability to turn an enemy into an NPC, so turning one into a pet might not be too much harder. -
Quote:The OP posted an interesting analysis, and if that were the only way to get purples and PVP IOs, it would be a problem. It's not though. Purples and PVP IOs are available pretty freely on the markets, and it's ridiculously easy to make money in this game. Anyone with half a brain could have enough money to trick out a build with PVP IOs and purples in a few months, and that's without working hard at it (certainly much less work than getting all those A-Merits). If you put in the kind of time it would take you to earn that many A-Merits every day, I would venture that you could do it in as little as a month or two. This is definitely a cop out response. Lets keep in mind we were talking 3 and a half years to slot out 24 out of 91 slots for a character. I look at my ill/emp build and it has 8 sets of PvP IO's and 2 sets of purples.
More than double the situation for the Psi/EM.
There is a difference between ultra rare being ultra rare and spending the better part of half a decade playing every day 5 missions a day
Yes, the game is focused around alts, not having uber-leet level 50s. There is no content that comes close to requiring builds like that. They're something you want, not something you need. If you needed them, I could perhaps agree with you that there was an issue, but you don't. -
Quote:Exactly what part of the TOS does this violate? While admittedly I didn't read the whole thing, I scanned through it quickly and didn't see anything that looked like it would prohibit trading outside of the markets. The developers also consider players who do this to be abusing the system and terms of service.
And logically, why would we have a trade interface if we weren't allowed to do so?
Well, if they shifted EVERYTHING one decimal place, it wouldn't do anything to those players. They would have one tenth the money that they previously had, but the SOs that they were struggling to get would cost one tenth as much as they used to as well. -
Quote:I'm not saying I'm in favor of this idea, but I'm not sure it would really cause any meaningful inflation.Four reasons if you count the theory that general price inflation would result if the limit was increased.
The majority of people don't have anywhere near the inf cap anyway, and for those that do, it's not exactly difficult to hold on to more money than the inf cap allows. Between gleemail and bids on level 53 IOs that don't exist, it's already trivial to have more money than the inf cap on a single character. That's not even getting into muling stuff on alts. -
Not sure what's going on. A redname posted that the servers are back up, but I still can't log in.

Quote:Ultra rare IOs are ultra rare. WAI.So I finally started to grind out some hero merits (because hey there isn't much to do).
1 Hero merit = 11 tip missions or 50 Merits + 20 million influence (Can get 50 merits from Synapse I think which can be run in about an hour to hour and a half). Can earn one once every 20 or 24 hours.
1 Piece of Glad Jav set = 25-30 Hero Merits
1 Full set = 165 Merits
5 Pieces of Apoc = 100 Merits
Say you are looking at a Psi/EM 3 sets of glad javs + 1 set of apocs.
(3 x 165) + 100 = 595 hero merits to have your standard range offensive toon slotted out for PvP.
To be able to do that you'd also need 11.9 Billion influence (if you are converting normal merits) and run the Synapse TF around 600 times. Or you would need to do 6,545 tip missions.
You would need to do the Synapse TF every day for over a year and a half. (Synapse TF is 15 missions long though some are deliveries. Either way adds up to 9,000 missions)
You can only get 5 tips per day, taking you 2 days to earn a hero merit that way. Off tips alone you would need to do 5 missions 1 day, 6 the next and after 3 and a quarter years you'd have your blaster's main attacks PvPIO/Purpled out.
Awesome. -
That's great for you. Just don't expect everyone else to do the same.
-
I wasn't saying you were, just in general.
Quote:How exactly do you support your opinion that content should be forced team based when you advertise 18 solo AV defeats (nice vids btw. I really liked the elevently billion freak bosses final room solo one)
I honestly dont know how to take your opinion. Is it "Its cool for me to do it, but I don't think it should really be possible" Or is it that you think it is cool to need a team to do the drudge work of the missions, but when it comes AV killing time, "you guys step back, I can handle it" What content should and shouldnt be soloable again? -
Quote:You're welcome to disregard my opinion, after all, it's just my opinion. All I ask is that you not insult me simply for having a different opinion than you.Should I stop reading your opinion on how one should team to do content when you advertise defeating 18 AV's in your sig? I'm pretty sure some of those were meant to be defeated by teams.
I wont stop reading your opinion, I will just give it as much weight as it deserves. -
Quote:Hey, you were the one that started with the insults, not me. I was just responding in what seems to be the only manner that you are capable of understanding.Because telling me to keep my fat yap shut is oh so mature of you.
Quote:Now go back and read the rest of my reply and learn something
You see, I've got you pegged Billy boy. You have no life outside this game and these forums, so you see yourself as the ultimate expert. Therefore, anyone who dares to disagree with you is obviously in the wrong. You take it as a personally, and get your panties in a bunch. To get back at them for hurting your delicate feelings, you start tossing out insults that you composed with the help of your mom's word-a-day calendar. It makes you feel all big inside to have gotten one over on some random guy on the internet.
In reality, it just makes you a ******.
Lol. I'd point out the irony here, but I'm not sure you'd be capable of understanding it. -
I stopped reading here. It's obvious that you'd rather hurl childish insults than have an actual discussion. Grow up a bit and then maybe we can talk.
-
Quote:Thank you for that insulting and utterly worthless assessment of my post. I've not yet posted in this thread, and didn't feel like reading through 5 pages of posts before I did so. Therefore, I wasn't aware that I was restating points that someone else had already made. Maybe in the future, you could skip the childish insults, and focus on what I actually said. Either that or just keep your fat yap shut. What a fine restating of all the baseless points already made throughout this and every other thread on the topic.
Quote:"There SHOULD be content that's only accessible to teams..." Which always leads to "Why?"
"Cuz it's an MMO." Which always leads to "So, what? Where does it state that because I *can* team with others that I should be *forced* to do so?"
However, there should be content that is accessible only to teams.
1. From a game perspective, an MMO should promote teaming for some things at least. Whether you like it or not, that's the whole point of an MMO. It's an inherently multiplayer game.
2. From a story perspective, it's common in comics to see the storyline focusing on a big threat that no single hero alone can handle. He has to team up with others to fend it off. The game should represent that, and does. -
I understand the argument that the OP is making, but I don't really agree with it.
City of heroes is a multiplayer game. It's great that they've made it accessible to soloers, but at its heart, it's meant for teaming. There SHOULD be content that's only accessible to teams, and honestly we don't even have that much of it. Add up all the raids, task forces, and trials in the game, and they're still probably only 10% or less of the total amount of content. I think that's a pretty acceptable amount really. It's not going to kill anyone to join a team once in awhile. -
-
well, I decided to make an energy/energy blaster. I'm level 6 and despite the slow leveling speed I'm having fun so far. The knockback is providing plenty of mitigation and I can kill things quite quickly. I'm not sure I'd want to play energy blast on a team, but solo it's really nice.
-
I'm wanting to create a new blaster who can easily solo his way through praetoria. I'm looking for suggestions on the easiest sets to do this with. I'm thinking some combination of ice and energy would probably be good, but I'm open to suggestions.

SS/Fire/Mu is pretty much top of the heap redside when it comes to farming. However, it takes a good bit of skill or a crap-ton of money to be able to pull it off (due to /fire's squishiness).
SS/Shield/Mu would not be far behind (and may come out ahead in certain situations), but the primary group farmed redside is nemesis, and due to vengeance, they'll bypass a lot of your defense on a /shield toon.
SS/WP/Mu is a bit further down the list, but is much easier/safer to farm with, and won't require much of an investment to be good. -
This is a fantastic idea. Make it so number 1.

Quote:Unfortunately, I'm on a business trip at the moment with only my netbook for company, so I don't have access to either Mid's or the game. That is really helpful, thank you.
What would you, or anyone, suggest as some IO sets to look for on a support-focused Kin/Energy/Dark defender? I have all Kin powers, except Repel, and only the first 5 attacks (taking Nova at lvl 49 for an "oh sh**" power)...I also have Aid Self, Aid Other, and Resuscitate from the Medicine pool; and Dark Consumption, Dark Embrace, and Soul Transfer from Dark Mastery.
I found that, with Kin as my primary, I am usually so focused on popping my Kin powers to help the team that I rarely attack. So, I respec'd to have more support powers to help the team, and less attacks.
My suggestion to you would be to download mid's hero designer if you don't already have it.

Then just go to the markets and look for cheap sets that fit the powers you have. Play around with the various enhancements available until you get enhancement values you like, and buy them, craft them, and slot them.
When I get home, if I have the time, I'll try to give you some more specific advice. -
The artwork is very cool looking, but I have several issues with the powerset itself.
1. It seems very pigeonholed as magic origin only. That's probably a bad idea.
2. The way you describe them, the powers seem to be static (as in they don't move with your character). Not only that, but they force your character to remain in place as well or lose the benefit. That's even worse than powers like spirit tree and triage beacon, and look how often those get used.
3. You should try to give a bit better description of what exactly the powers do.
4. You seem to be confused about how many powers are in a powerset. You mentioned that you've uploaded 2 powers, and have 5 to go. A powerset needs 9 powers.
5. The set doesn't seem to be too solo-friendly so far.
I will admit to being interested in how you plan to make this work as a buff/support set but also a dominator primary and secondary. -
The only part of your idea that I really disagree with is giving the newly respec'd character double xp on their trip back to 50. I wouldn't make use of the option if it were available (I don't care about badges, origin, or backstory too much to be honest), but I can't really say I have a problem with it.
However, regardless of my personal feelings about the matter, this will NEVER happen. The developers have stated that in no uncertain terms many, many times. -
There are a lot of different ways to go about this.
For most of my characters, I start putting the set IOs for their final build in at level 27 (so level 30 IOs). This is mainly just because I don't like waiting until level 47 to have an IO build.
On high-end characters that are being built with a specific purpose in mind (a permadom for example, or my softcapped, permahasten fire/SR AV soloer) I'll use level 50 IOs to eke out every last little bit of performance (fake) money can buy.
For someone who is new to the whole world of IOs, I would suggest starting off with frankenslotting.
Frankenslotting is slotting pieces of multiple cheap sets just to enhance your powers further, without worrying about set bonuses. It's by far the cheapest, easiest way to push yourself beyond what SOs and generic IOs can do.
For example, on your kin/energy defender, let's say in one of your ranged attacks you have 5 slots available. You might slot in them:
A level 40 Ruin: Accuracy/Damage/Recharge
A level 50 Devastation: Accuracy/Damage/Recharge
A level 35 Maelstrom's Fury: Damage/Endurance/Recharge
A level 50 Thunderstrike: Accuracy/Damage/Endurance
A level 50 Thunderstrike: Damage/Endurance/Recharge
You only get a single set bonus from that slotting (2% recovery bonus from the two pieces of thunderstrike), but that would give you approximately a 60% enhancement to accuracy and endurance, a 95% enhancement to damage, and an 80% enhancement to recharge. It would take roughly 9 even-level SOs to give that amount of enhancement to a single power, something which is obviously impossible. You did it with only 5 enhancements, so you've enhanced this power well beyond what is possible with SOs or generic IOs. And as far as I know, all of those sets are pretty cheap too, so it shouldn't cost you too much.
Different people suggest starting to slot at different levels. Personally, I like to start with level 30 IOs (which you can start to slot at level 27). The amount of enhancement that level 30 single-aspect IO provides is just slightly better than an even-level SO.
Anyway, hope this helps, and good luck with your foray into the invention system. -
I tend to swear pretty freely in real life, and do so in game as well. I'll stop if someone asks me to, but that happens quite rarely in my experience. Honestly, it's never been a big issue for me.

I'm not too fond of the current version of granite to be honest. What I'd like to see in a changed version is:
Something that doesn't change your size
A stone that actually looks like granite (what we have now looks like slate)
An option that doesn't change or add anything to your costume, but simply turns your character's skin to stone (I'd actually like this for all the stone armor powers)
