Quote:I can't tell you mechanically what the difference is.Ice slick? Sleet?
Why is bonfire so ultra awesome when powers exist already to do the exact same thing. Because you can keep it casting it over and over? Last I checked, my ice dom had no problems at all with perma ice slick effects.
in effect, bonfire affects all foes in a large area and bounces them with no ability to do anything - they cannot fight back, they cannot try to leave the area.
I've played an ice controller - this is far better -

I know of 2 times when knockback is better
if you are ranged and fighting strong melees, especially slow strong melees. KB vs vahz is great. The lumber towards you, you knock them back, they stagger towards you again. They can vomit on you, but staying out of melee with them is great.
if you can knock things off of high places it makes for much greater CC than knockdown. If you don't want the CC then it is not helpful. Although it also damages them a lot (I don't know how falling damage factors into XP). -
Quote:This. It doesn't matter if that doesn't translate into the best farming build in the world. Its still very likely game-breaking in the literal sense of the term. Even non-alerting high accuracy confusion is at least degraded by the purple patch. KD isn't, because the duration of KD is not affected by magnitude changes due to the purple patch.
I can drop a bonfire from out of LoS. I can perma it by just redropping it before it goes away. The enemies never get a chance to attack me. It does not matter what level they are - it only matters if they resist knockback.
This is not a power that is tricky to use or that requires the right circumstances.
It is an iwin button. There may be things that kill faster - but this is a guaranteed 100% safe iwin button.
The simplest solution is to require a to hit check with bonfire. It will still be great, but will have a limit. -
Quote:The Lord Ruler from Mistborn is also a very good comparison to Tyrant. And a great series if people have not read it.Perhaps the way I made the reference was questionable, but he was the first generally agreed upon terrible person in a position of power I thought of that wouldn't have been lost on a lot of people. I could have mentioned Raj Ahten, but since he was a character in a book, very few people would have gotten the reference. (Incidentally, Raj Ahten, from David Farland's The Runelords would have been a better reference, as he and Tryrant are VERY similar. But the odds of anyone but me understanding that were slim)

I hadn't run a DFB in awhile since I'd been doing Praetoria.
started a new character and did a dfb - it was fun. The basics of the game are great, and as long as you change enemies every 10 minutes it doesn't get very old -
having enjoyed the summer blockbuster on teams of 4, I am wondering if there is an lfg channel for people interested in smaller teams.
-
for the same reason - it's not the game/content I want to play. It's not the character I want to play.
I want to play a hero in city of heroes.
There are no heroes in Praetoria. You fight everyone, no matter what side you are supposed to be on.
While writing is good, the story interesting - I prefer the simplicity of a sewer of bad guys to beat up. No moral questions. -
I really like the 4 mission arcs. That's just about the right length to be fun and engaging but not too long

I hear galaxy city has a lot of empty space, so does Boomtown

I question how much people play on the edge. I would bet that the majority of players do not alter their difficulty settings and play at +0/x1. They can survive that easily, but they don't know or don't bother changing the difficulty.
I base this on teaming and seeing people's difficulty settings when you look at available missions. -
double sapping as well
I will start slotting for recharge -
I just always assume you can't have the same power out twice, but I know that some powers allow that.
Can you have 2 static fields out at the same time? -
-
devices is actually a fine set for people who want to play devices. It is a terrible set for people who want to play a natural character and use technology but want it to play like the other secondaries.
the people who like devices swear by it. The mines let you do amazing things.
the problem really is people who expect all sets to be vanilla and perform the same way with the same play style. -
Quote:That's an interesting take and probably accurate. I had not considered that they could have the Praetoria / Primal as a clash between Rome and Greece. Rome being the imperial state and Greece being the freedom loving side. The terms Praetor and Praetorian Guard are roman, not greek, so the modern connotation is probably correct - sic semper tyrannis. Plus, he was known as Emperor Cole in Praetoria, not Tyrant, only Primals and Resistance members call him that. Unlike Tyrant, Statesman was inspired by Greece rather than Rome, which is why he formed a Freedom Phalanx instead of a Praetorian Guard.

Quote:Exactly.Ah, i see.
"Do not know history" means anyone who feels more than two millenia of usage of the word tryant should not be abandoned for the more neutral, but not necessarily good, connotation it had for a few centuries beforehand. So we should ignore the last 2500 or so years of usage of the term in favor of the long archaic early definition?
If one is faced with a character with powers based on Greek mythology created by a historian, one should probably assume that they were named knowing the original meaning of the word rather than just the common usage today.
I have to assume that Tyrant was named knowing the double meaning of the term and that it was chosen deliberately. It is also nice that being a character based on Greek mythology they used Tyrant which is a Greek word rather than Dictator with is a Latin word. -
is a character named Tyrant
* which those who do not know history think means bad ruler whereas it really just means one came to power not in the usual way and was the term for many great leaders in history
* the character has the noble goal of wanting to make a paradise for everyone
* is forced to compromise because reality prevents a true paradise
* has his work ruined by the power hungry and traitorous people who work for him
* faces a rebellion of those for whom he worked so hard to create a paradise, and who claim to be wanting to make things better for everyone, but are really more ruthless, power hungry, and vicious than he is
* his downfall comes from trying to spread his vision to a new world and is rejected
I assume from this that the new dev team loves Jack, hates the old dev team, and hates the players.
Or it's just a story. -
