  3. Did A:EMT catch the JLU bug or something? Do they have to cancel a team cartoon if it is done well?

  5. The three sets use a lot of the same animations and have pretty similar powers.

    The main differences are:

    Damage type
    Broadsword- lethal
    Battle Axe-lethal
    War Mace- smashing

smashing is slightly less resisted than lethal though it is very close.

    Utility/mez
Broadsword- -def, parry for def (can be leveraged to great effect), knockup on disembowel
Battle Axe- bunch of knock up and knockdown
War Mace- mix of knock down, knock up, and stuns. Clobber is high damage guaranteed stun on lieut/minion

    damage

Broadsword: decent mix of AOE and single target, animations are a bit slow so overall DPA isn't so hot.

Battle Axe: same sort of mix of AOE and single target, but is a bit ahead of BS because it has a decent hitter in place of parry

War Mace: best of the bunch IMO. Has a very solid mix of single target and AOE damage. Crowd Control and Clobber really make the set.

While I haven't played BS, I do have characters with full access to both of the other sets and I find War Mace to be a great weapon set. As an odd suggestion, if you don't like the gimmicks involved in Titan Weapons, War Mace is a not bad substitute (not as powerful, but not as hard to play or level).
  6. Oh, I don't know. Order of the Phoenix came out pretty well IMO. Now Green Lantern certainly wasn't a commercial success, but I think it gets trashed more than it deserves (could be I'm a bit to favorable on the character so I'm biased however). The main weakness of GL (IMO of course) was that it was too rushed. They tried to stuff too much into it. I have to wonder if that was the writer's fault. I could see a situation of someone above him trying to make him cram more in, and he did what he could.

OOTP did a decent job of cutting the story down to what was necessary to get it told. Heck, I think I preferred the movie in some ways since it had much less of the whiny Harry teen angst which was so prevalent throughout the book.

And to be compeltely honest, I like the Jonn is vulnerable to something the common man can get his hands on to defend himself with.

MM used to be quite vulnerable to fire. It's only been a psychological weakness in recent years. Once upon a time it would pretty much just shut him down, powers and all. I've got a goodly pile of reprints of silver age JLA and fire would really rock his world in those days.

Personally I don't see why Crab Spiders aren't more popular. They can to be what a blaster ought to. You can have decent defense, status protection, and solid ranged offense. Yes, they do less than high end blaster builds, but they also live through things.

Blasters should either get some real forms of damage mitigation or do stupidly high quantities of damage. Anything else is unbalanced.
  9. Just did the hero one. It was well done. Will have to do the redside one to see how it is.

    OK. snark aside..

The problem is that the game is still, in some fictional alternate universe, based around SOs.. But a notable percentage of the games population don't rely on just SOs. And as long as comparisons are made between SOed alts, and IOed/Incarnated alts, you're going to have folks that feel seriously deficient, regardless of what alt you are playing.

And I don't know what the solution is to try and bridge that gap. I think upping the baseline performance may be part of the solution, but I think that should be done with extreme caution...
Look, while you can twink out a blaster build with IOs, you will spend a lot more to do it, and you won't be nearly as durable as a IOed build from an AT that actually has defenses.

Balance has some logical basis. If you do more damage, you have less defense, and vice versa. That's a standard in RPGs, computer or otherwise. However the COH ATs don't follow this. Blasters do not do significantly more damage than twinked scrapper or stalker builds (if they even do more at all, some builds can). They have nothing which compensates for this.

Blasters are glass cannons, and that is the basic design. The problem is that they exist in a world which also happens to have steel cannons of the same caliber.

I started this game on a blaster and got over it pretty quickly. I don't even consider playing them at all. There's no compelling reason to do so. I could do a corrupter/defender and have the blast sets, but be able to help the team a whole lot more. I could do a melee AT, and have plenty of defenses while doing damage. Blasters are the red haired stepchild of COH, and to even vaguely compare other AT's minor gripes to the situation of blasters is utterly fatuous.

In the testing I have done with tier 4 melee and tier 4 assault, I've found it to be pretty powerful. Melee has saved the hide on my Elm/SR stalker when I got in too deep. Without it I would have been toast, this is absolutely true. Now on a squishy, yes, it would not have kept me alive, but stacked with other defenses it can push you over the top in situations where you would otherwise die.

Assault, well I consider that much simpler. It's a really long term build up. If you want a damage spike, hit it. I mean if you ever use a red inspiration, you should like assault.

This is of course a personal evaluation. Honestly I also would prefer things which were of lesser impact but on all the time. However that's not the feel the devs wanted. They prefer the player to me more involved and forced to make opportunity cost evaluations. I think they imagine it gets people more involved in the game. Maybe it does. I know it's not my preference. However I can work with what is provided and it does leverage out into a substantial power boost in my experience.
  12. Actually I don't quite get why people complain about Hybrid.

I have 2 alts with it at tier 4.

First has assault, second has melee.

Assault when decked out is like a 50% uptime build up. That's really pretty damned good. If you take build up on your character, why the heck would you not take this?

Melee is pretty nice as well, though I can understand why people might have complains. People like to have a consistent level of performance. They don't like to be spikey. However melee is still a 50% uptime 'oh crap' power which can do some pretty impressive stuff for your survival. This is without a crash.

But sure, if you don't like that spikey survival feeling, then take assault and think of it like build up. The others I didn't even really consider. I don't much like controller types, and I've never cared for team buffs which are part time. Before they made the powers part time, I would have been all over support. However I could not have run it full time on the alt I wanted with the endurance cost they had projected. As it stands now that alt has assault since I don't want to have a team which is getting buffed by my character lose that buff at the wrong time. I can control when I need some help, I can't control it for the rest of a team.
  13. If you really want to compare power levels from the 'old days' max to today, you should really look at the old days max. That would be hami-Oed out with the old +50% boost hami-Os coupled with no GDN or ED. Builds in those days were really, really powerful.

Now granted as mentioned above, some ATs benefited more than others, but heck that's still true with IOs.

However let's take a fire tanker. With full Hami-O treatment, they could be at the resistance cap to everything but cold, toxic and psi. You could easily stack in over 30% defense, and have pema-hasten on top of it all quite easily. Then all your attacks would be at the damage cap (only 400% on tankers after all).

Then there was regen, back when it regened and fast. You had the perma-unstoppable builds running around with really high defense on top of 90% resistance to all but psi, and then you threw in essentially unlimited endurance.

Though heck, even debuffers were pretty stupid powerful. Any defender with a -tohit could floor about anything with one power.

There was a lot of power running around back then (3 sets of fire imps out at once, 2 phantoms, etc). While there were gimp builds, there were plenty of gods possible.

With incarnate powers and high end builds, people do approach that now, and owing to some sets which didn't exist in the day, may even exceed it. However the AOE stacks of those days are only a faded memory. The Aggro cap all by itself put most of that to rest even without AOE caps.
  14. Another TPB only buyer here. Think the last actual comics I bought were the Avengers/JLA teamup series because it had been heralded for so long (decades). Other than that I just peruse the TPBs for teams I like and pick one up occasionally. I must say I've been getting ones I don't like much more often than ones I do like of late, and may well give up. Just my opinion, but I've found the quality of writing to be dropping.
  15. I'll give it a shot.

Haven't read all the pertinent stories, but I can dig up the background online.

They had a state completely cut off from the outside world, and iirc the barrier was a fair number of miles out. I fully admit that it depends on how far the barrier was from the islands, but as long as it was over 10 miles a tomahawk nuke would not have been overly excessive (as in, would be far enough to have any significant effect on the island).

Though you are correct, the outside world was out of the loop on severity, so I suppose they would not authorize such.
  17. I do admit, I'm rather surprised they never tried a nuke on the shield.

How do you derive a regular group that plays together when I said PUG? I mean you could assume I'm lying, but then this discussion is moot.

It was a pure PUG. I knew the lead and that was about it.

Plenty of people have succeeded on 24 man teams. Perhaps you have an issue, not the trial?

    PERIOD
  21. I might agree with the lauding if it actually worked. I got LDed multiple times trying to finish it. While I have heard you can pull it off if you single target all the way through, but I don't have the patience for that.

I've done it three times. First time was a PUG of 13 and we made it. Every other time we failed (with larger leagues).

The failures are due to people being incapable of listening to instructions. As mentioned above, this one doesn't have as much slack for the slackers. Everyone has to be on their game and paying attention to get by. If that is the case, it's really not that hard. I'm reasonably sure that once people get over their cranial rectal inversions, the success rates will improve markedly.

As far as casualties go, I don't imagine anyone who might be thinking of joining the Navy really thinks they'll go up against aliens during their time in the service.
Anyone who believes that any of the rest of that is likely will probably be expecting the alien attack as well.

Considering the survival rate for crewmen who were involved in the combat, it surely was not a recruitment video (unless we're starting a Kamikaze corps). .
