    log in issue?

    some possibilities:

    1) caps lock is on
    2) you have a stuck or multi-play key
    3) you don't remember name or password quite as well as you think
    4) someone hacked your account and changed password (upset ex-girl/boyfriend maybe?)
  2. My ticket was submitted as "Stuck".

There appear to be two different log-in problems in this thread. Mine (OP) is only affecting one character, and leads to an immediate game crash when he is logged in. The other issue described seems to affect every character belonging to a player, with the game reporting "No Mapserver connection." In both cases, though, we cannot play a character we would like to play.
  3. "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

Well, phooey. I started to actually play Lickity Zplit on my desktop PC. He entered his base, sent a chat line to a friend, and started to open his Contact tab. Just as the tab started to zoom up to full size, the program froze and crashed. He now crashes again when I try to log him in.

    Any advice?
  4. "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again."

I don't know for how long, but the desktop PC is now able to play the brute, Lickity Zplit, again.

Since the 1366x768 was working on the portable, I decided to try that rez on the desktop. The closest available rez was 1360x768, and I chose that. After restart of game, Lickity Zplit was working fine at this intermediate rez.

Okay, let's wear all the pajamas ... I reset the rez to the normal 1920x1080 and quit the game. On restart, Lickity was still functioning properly.

Does anyone know what might have been the problem, and how possibly to avoid it in the future?
  5. I decided to try to get the desktop PC to rethink the problematic brute. So, using my desktop, I logged in a warshade and reduced the game resolution to 1024x768 and restarted the game for it to take effect. Upon restarting, I logged in the Warshade to see if everything was ok. GUI was overlapping, but I expected that. Then I logged out the warshade and logged in the problematic brute.

Sigh, no go. He still crashes.

[edit add, 14 minutes later than original post]
I also just tried logging the brute in under Safe Mode. No crash! He moved fine. The game was running with minimal graphics and sound, though, I think at 800x600. Thinking maybe the problem had resolved, I quit the game normally, and restarted in normal mode. Nope. Still the crash.
    [/edit]

    [edit add]
Went back to my portable. Logged in a non-problematic character, and set game resolution to 1366x768 (the portable's native res). I quit and restarted the program for the new res to take effect, and logged in my brute. He still functions fine on the portable. I was thinking perhaps there might be something magical about the 800x600 resolution, but that's not it.

  6. I have a level 43 Brute on Virtue who crashes the game whenever he logs in. None of my other characters have yet exhibited this problem, whether it be Virtue or another server.

It started yesterday morning, as he was leaving the Vault Reserve in Cap Au Diable. The game froze while he was in the doorway, then crashed completely. I could not log him back in; the same freeze-then-crash would happen each time.

I submitted a petition (via another character). The email reply said:
    Quote:
    Hello Richard,

We received your report of not being able to log on your character. We have moved your character to a safe location and you should now be able to access it again.

If you are still unable to access the character, you may need to wait for the next daily server maintenance for the character to become available. Please let us know if you are still unable to access the character after that time.

    Take care,
    GM Stalwart
"Great!" I logged him in again. He was moved to Mercy, near Kalinda. Unfortunately he still freezes then crashes.

Not wanting to just wait until Thursday morning, I tried using my portable to log him in. It worked, with no apparent problem. Well, all I really know is that I could move him and the game did not freeze nor crash. The portable defaulted to an 800x600 screen, and the GUI had overlapping elements. (Even on my portable I normally play at 1920x1080, using the display usually connected to my desktop. This time I just logged in with the portable's own screen, which does not support that resolution, so I guess it defaulted to minimum res.)

"Great", I once again thought. "He's fixed." I logged out from the portable and tried once again using the desktop. I could tell that he had moved, but the game once again froze, then crashed.

Which brings me to actual questions. What local file(s) on the desktop PC could be causing this problem? Can I fix it myself? Since the character works on one computer but not the other, I'm guessing that the coming server maintenance on Thursday will not fix the problem.
  7. It happens to me occasionally too. I have not been able to figure out a pattern to when it occurs.
  8. After reading whole thread, it seems I may have a unique compulsion.

All my guys are "circumnavigationalists". They must eventually circle each zone so that the outside edge is fully exposed. This is still done even though I have the Reveal vet power now. I'll use Reveal to expose a zone, but only after it has been circumnavigated.

The only zone that I cannot circumnavigate is Peregrine Island. (There may be one in Praetoria also, but haven't tested thoroughly. All I know is when I went near edge there, I started dieing quickly.) PI has no edges. The only way you know you got to an edge is when you already got zoned to Talos Island. So instead of circumnavigating the edge in PI, I circumnavigate the main island instead.

    Weird enough for ya?

I don't begrudge the guys who pre-purchased an 18-hour head-start. I pre-ordered from Best Buy, and will go pick up my box tomorrow. (BB only charged $29.99, btw.)

Well, I guess you're half right, or whatever percentage of the community pre-purchased. I pre-ordered, and will pick up my box tomorrow, meaning I can't enter Praetoria today.

(Maybe I'll finally have a CoH that doesn't cause windows to tell me Every Time I Start It, "I don't know where this came from. Are you sure you really trust it?".)
  11. Heh, thanks for your response, Kheldarn. As you were making it, I was adding the Environment section to the first post.

I'm not really looking for help; it was just a strange thing that I thought worth reporting. I've been playing fine on this computer since Monday (4 days), and there have been no problems. I don't think there have been any other missing dots.
  12. This morning I saw something I hadn't seen before:

My character was almost level 11, sidekicked to level 18 teammate. We were doing an AE outdoor mission. Gaining xp, the 9th dot appeared, but the 8th one disappeared.

It's not a very significant bug, but I thought I'd report it.

    Environment
    --------------
new ASUS cg-1330-05 desktop with AMD 6-core processor
ATI HD 5700 graphic card, current drivers
    Windows 7, 64-bit
    8 GBytes RAM
    using full Ultra mode preset
character: 3-day old Enflamed Echo, fire/sonic controller
    server: Justice

Oh my. I can now predict that by issue 27 we'll learn what kind of merit FREEM really is!
  14. Thanks for the feedack; keep it coming.

Coyote, I had not specifically thought of saving the Story Book to a text file, but it is a great idea.

Memphis_Bill, the Story Book would not be saved permantly unless the player so commanded. It could, however, have some continuing life after its arc were completed. Perhaps users would be given 4 hours to read and/or preserve it's contents. As I stated, uninterested users could be given the option to auto-delete Story Books automatically at the end of an arc.
  15. I purchased a Samsung R580 portable, and it will not zoom the game without using a corded mouse. The onboard touchscreen emulates a 3rd button wheel by using two fingers. This works fine scrolling Firefox, for example. But in game, this functionality is ignored even though I see the mouse icon change to it's mousewheel form. The game also refuses to zoom when using a Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 3500. Again Firefox scrolls fine when the mousewheel is used, but the game zoom function ignores it. Depressing the mousewheel allows normal point-of-view rotation, however.

The only way I can get the game to zoom is to connect a corded mouse, in this case an HP mouse from an old computer.
  16. It's not necessarily easy to follow the underlying story of even one mission, not to mention arc or task force. And MA stories can even be harder to follow because of often unfamiliar foes and goals. Stories are revealed in pieces, including contact blurbs, mission-entry pop-ups, clues, foe descriptions, the chat window, and now even disembodied text voices. I propose a consolidated Story Book window to contain all elements of the story in one place, accessible by all teammates, inclusive of all missions in an arc or task force. (For simplicity's sake, I'll use "arc" from now on to encompass single missions, arcs, task forces, and strike forces.)

Traditional details could remain in the places they currently are; I envision the Story Book as an addition, not a replacement. Thus players who like things they way they are could ignore the Story Book and receive/ignore story elements as they have become used to doing.

The Story Book (SB) would be a team-wide entity during the arc, and could be permanently saved by each player as a memento when the arc is complete. Thus players who arrive after the first mission could still access the whole story, even if they weren't part of all of it.

The SB would automatically grab all the story elements available. When a contact or other NPC speaks to you (dialog box or disembodied voice), that text would be stored in a Discourse tab, whether interactive or not. When you come upon foe or foes for the first time, their descriptions would be stored in a Foes tab. Mission-entry and mission-complete blurbs would be stored in a Chapters tab. Teammate names would be stored in a Team tab. Etc.

Each story would be divided into chapters (missions) and sections (each triggered event would commence a new section). Each tab of the SB would reflect this division so that the separate elements could still be tracked sequentially. Perhaps the main SB window would allow the reader to choose the chapter and section globally, or perhaps all tabs would scroll along with the currently-selected tab. There would be an option to not automatically delete the Story Book at the end of an arc. (IMO, this should be the default behavior, but the option would be there for players who don't care about story.

The Story Book would likely prove most beneficial to Mission Architect stories, but any multi-mission arc would benefit. The devs have been adding new elements to standard missions, such as multi-part NPC conversations and disembodied voices. Thus even the "standard" content will see significant benefit as story complexity continues to grow.

By all means, I'd like feedback on this idea, both positive and negative. Other ideas to expand/refine this concept are especially desired.
  17. I had just started a mission when I had a mapserver. By time it timed out and got to the server screen, Virtue was down.
  18. I forgot about it too. But Thursday is the normal maintenance day, so other than a quiet grumble about not being able to finish my timed mission, I can't complain too much.

There is a fairly steep learning curve for base design. Some folks just commit enough time to get the portals in, and little more. Other folks are just not good designers. Even other folks are lazy, uninformed, or maybe not high enough level, and don't even bother getting the beacons needed to have a full set of portals. (In truth the RWZ beacon can be a pain to get.)

    RUSH the RIKTI!!

I'm happy to report that yes, this event is still going strong. I arrived a few minutes prior to 9 only to find that the primary RWZ was full, and nothing was happening in RWZ 1. I waited around a few minutes, checking the portal frequently for an opening, and made it in with about half the pylons left. A team accepted my LFT request, and good times, and the mothership exploration badge, followed.

    smear campaign

Over it's 35 year run (the longest continuous-running American kids show ever) it had various time slots. In some time slots it was normal to have a studio audience, but at other times, such as mornings when kids were at school, they didn't. I don't know when this particular video was shot.

    smear campaign

There was a long running kids show in the Phoenix, AZ area, called Wallace and Ladmo. It consisted of cartoons and skits, with many recurring characters. One of them was Captain Super, who feels the need to clarify certain rumors:

I suspect if you didn't grow up with them, this may not seem that funny. But if you did ...

    RUSH the RIKTI!!

Is this event still going (Wed. at 9pm Eastern)? This isn't my primary server, but I inherited an SG here (Avenging Force). We lack the RWZ beacon, and I would like to acquire it.
  24. How about a tie-in with Project Runway? Since we have one of the best character creators out there, it seems to me this might be a natural. Have the contestants design their own super-hero costume using the tools here as part one. Then as part two, they actually have to implement the design in real materials on a real model. They would have a choice of using a female or male model.

Sexy Jay would of course be the face of CoX for this challenge.
