Quote:Very true, but wouldn't server consolidation effectively put all your eggs in one basket anyway? One could certainly use virtual servers, but as you mentioned, it's akin to putting all of one's eggs in the same basket when hardware failures are concerned.
Quote:Plus there's the obvious problem of hardware stress vs. the number of virtual servers * usage. For current lower population servers, it could be handled by one box hosting 2-3 virtual servers. But I wouldn't try putting both Freedom and Virtue on their own boxes.
(EDIT: Actually, server load (and the cost associated) isn't the main reason people are asking for this--it's usually more along the lines of POPULATION imbalance--"I can't find teams, consolidate the servers". You can switch servers fairly easily, and finding a team on lower population servers is not as hard as they suggest. I don't consider this to be a legitimate concern. The problem more, often than not, is player attitude rather than server setup in this case. Anyway...)
Quote:Add into the equation of the typical MMO server architecture, and virtual servers can become even trickier. For example, the load on a map server may be greater than that of a database server, making it tricky for an admin to balance cost vs. performance. -
From what I understand about current server technology, you don't have to reduce the number of servers available in-game to reduce the cost. Isn't it possible to have several "virtual servers" on one actual physical server (especially if the virtual servers on that physical server are all low population)?
I wouldn't be surprised to see only four or five servers running CoX even if we never actually consolidated them in game. The only way we'd be able to tell that was the case was if multiple servers experienced the same bug simultaneously, or suddenly went down at the same time... -
Quote:As suggested earlier, the idea of charging ridiculously high rates for this option (on the order of $30 per month) would soften the blow for me quite a bit. Considering the deliberately fluff nature of many of the veteran rewards, I wouldn't feel terrible if a newbie gave NCSoft several hundred dollars so that he could "catch up" with me in terms of my vet rewards. It would be like if, in your analogy, you found out that someone new had the same watch that you got after working there for 5 years, but they paid, say, $5,000.00 for it. It would still rub me the wrong way, but not nearly as much as it would if they told me they paid $20 bucks.Okay, analogy time.
You have been working at a company for 5 years. As a thank you for your loyalty the company gives you a watch. The watch is an exclusive design with the company's logo on it, only people who have worked there for a certain length of time have such a watch.
Now, you discover a person wearing that very same watch, who you know for a fact has not been with the company for 5 years. Upon inquiring, you discover that the person in question purchased the watch.
EDIT: Upon further consideration, catching up with me for $30 a month would cost a lot more than a few hundred dollars. Especially since I've been playing for over 50 months... -
Quote:If that is, in fact, what you mean, then I'm all on-board for this. /Signed.Not sure what you mean here.
Do you mean just adding a display of Primary/Secondary powerset?
ie go to the character select screen and see:
Super-Duper X-Man
Invulnerability/Super Strength
Level 38 Science Tanker
Brickstown
as the character display (plus his picture of course)? -
QFT. This game really has ruined me for other games. As I play them, I keep wondering, "Why didn't this game learn anything from CoH?" Aren't games supposed to get BETTER as time and technology progress? Somehow, even the GRAPHICs are worse on the newer games, not to mention the character creation choices, the PvP setup (or lack thereof), available ATs and playstyles, user interfaces, etc.
-
So would I, but not if it meant giving scrappers a ranged set in the bargain. I know you mean well, but this idea is really crappy, and all you're doing is spreading the crap with your hands.
-
Excellent idea--I'll join the chorus of /signed.

Quote:Seriously? This "Equilibrium" crap again? Pistols are RANGED weapons. Unless they give us Archery scrappers, it's time to give this suggestion a rest.Dual wielding pistol scrappers brutes stalkers ... or just a new class itself.
Quote:Make it a booster class buyable
Quote:Since its a buyable class , it shouldn´t conflict with so much balance issues.
Quote:Now in team concept the dual wield pistol person should be damage wise a lower then blasters thats solved by not giving them a endgame tier 9 nuke .
Range should be only max medium range .
So no snipe shot .
Quote:illusion controller were the tank mages back then with invisibility did it break the game ?
Heck no it was fun to play . something different , forcefield defenders where tank mages.
Broke the game ? heck no
Do i have to continue on what pre global nerf combinations were .
heck hell i have a semi scrapper range with claw set , does it break the game ?
Quote:There is no less desirables in team in cox , grab a bunch of toons one healer one tank.
Done the rest is player skills . -
I agree--it's definitely time to return to those good ol' fashioned Hamidon values. Too often these days, giant monsters forget their roots and go stomping off to terrorize villages that aren't even in their neighborhoods. Sometimes they even go so far as to attack each other (*gasps*)! Where are their morals these days? Where was their queen monster when they were still quivering in their protective cocoons? You have to raise those monsters the right way, or someday, you'll have monsters who can't remember what it was like to fight against an army of heroes. They may even turn traitor and join the Freedom Phalanx! The SHAME! The shame!
Join me in supporting traditional Hamidon values. Your baby monsters will thank you. -

Quote:So, basically, your desire to discuss PvP in a calm, rational manner brought about a result opposite to that which was planned or expected. Who would have seen that coming, Prof_Backfire?Man, you'd think I of all people would know not to post a PVP thread in this forum.
Eh well, live and learn. -
I find myself doing this on all my new characters now. I create the costume, come up with a name, then hit Google for a quick once-over. There have been several times where I've found myself frustrated because some obscure company or cousin-of-a-cousin-of-a Marvel character had the same name. Usually I just try something else and move on. I guess I've been lucky--I've never had a character get genericized.
-
I think Posi is doing an absolutely fantastic job--he listens to player requests (instead of ignoring them in favor of his "vision"), he doesn't tell us about updates to the game until he's really sure they can work, and he isn't trigger-happy with the nerfbat.
So, if I sat at Posi's desk, I would let out a Darth Vader style "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" And try to hire him back as my replacement pronto. I don't think I could do anything better, and I'd rather have more free time to actually PLAY CoX. -
Quote:Yeah, I'll admit I do tend to dogpile people. I shouldn't kick 'em when they're down, but some things are so ridiculous that it's hard not to, even when they admit it.Yeah, but after reading the responses and explanations from other members, the OP graciously acknowledged that getting genericized was completely justified. He seems to "get it" now, he doesn't really need to keep getting hit upside the head with it.

Quote:I have read the entire thread, and I've done no such thing. The OP's friend clearly deserved to be hit with the generic stick, and pretending "J" doesn't stand for "joint" is pretty silly. While some people in this thread have claimed they don't understand the reference, they weren't the ones who created the character in question.I wish people would read through the thread before sticking their foot in their pie hole.
EDIT: I'm curious--how many people here were hit by the generic stick and felt like it was unjustified? -
Quote:I went down to the track to watch the alphabet race once. I wanted to bet 2p on U, but they said the D twins (DDs) were a safer bet. So I went long on DDs.And "i want 2p on u" could just mean i want to place two pence on the letter U, and has nothing to do with watersports.
And Frederick Ulrickson using just his initials with a period between doesn't automaticaly mean he's trying to be rude.
My letter came in first place, but the cashier (the letter B) never paid out. So I told the manager "Tell that B I want my money!" Eventually, B came back with her friend S and double-teamed me. "What is this BS?" I asked as they threw me out.
The preceeding story was brought to you by the letters W, T, and F.
Seriously OP, you knew *EXACTLY* why your name was offensive--no one is that naive. Stop pretending it was inoccuous. It's an insult. -
Quote:I took my girlfriend to see "Mama Mia" in Vegas. As for GR info--I'm trying to be patient. A watched pot never boils and all that silly crap. I really want my demon-summoning MM though. -

OWW! That HURT!!! Why didn't any of you warn me? Couldn't someone have said something?
*Several Rikti approach Solicio from behind while he brushes soot off his costume*
Why would someone leave all those explodey things in the middle of the road? Explosives are dangerous under the best of conditions. Also, why is the sky green? That can't be healthy. I should call the EPA... -
*Looks around Virtue*
Hey...where did everybody go? And why are there all these weird pods stuck in the pavement with red blinking lights on them? Maybe I should take a closer look... -
I could agree with that if they could also:
1. Add a protractor and calculator costume piece for all the winged "angle" characters.
2. Add a smooth red sash piece for all the evil minions of "satin".

Quote:I don't think you're being selfish--I think you're trying hard to come up with ways improve the game, and I applaud you for that. I just don't think that spending so much time and effort on PvP would do improve the game that much. Like others have said, PvP makes up such a small percentage of this game, and rather than spend massive efforts to fix it, I think we should: 1. Just give PvP back its old system so that PvP and PvE playstyles aren't completely different. 2. Focus development efforts on PvE, where most of the remaining players are now.I think one problem i have goin right now is people think i'm a pvper trying to make more pvpers... that is wrong... i am a pve player by heart... pvp is usualy something i do to kill a couple mins or after i've hit the max lvl and done all the end game content... but if there isnt even any sort of goal or order to it i see no point.... i tried pvp on here once and was disgusted... it was boring... so i'm trying to come up with something that us pve players might enjoy... so please stop treating this as a selfish idea from a pvp player cause its not...
