I played a Willpower/Energy to level 50 back before the massive nerfs (to both damage, as well as visual style/animation (in that I HATE the new animations)) and at the time I loved it, but now I hate the combo. Simply LOATHE Willpower/Energy Melee now. I definitely don't recommend that at ALL. But, I'm admitting my bias up front.
So, the only choice left would be Dark/Energy. The stacking stuns of Dark Armor's Oppressive Gloom with your Energy attacks would be kinda fun. As others have said, the only bad thing is that the stuns make foes wobble away from you sometimes. Still, I think it would be awesome.
Energy Mastery could go along with your secondary for theme purposes, and it'd be fun too!

I would say Ice/Electric.
Eventually, you'd be able to use your Lightning Rod to teleport into a group, killing some (or badly wounding them). Want to recover some endurance and get some defense? Click Energy Absorption while you are standing in the middle of the bad guys. Meanwhile, your slow aura and your damage aura would piss them off and finish them off, in that order. Talk about keeping the aggro! Throw in a taunt if you have it, Otherwise, go to town on the straggling survivors or bosses with your single target attacks.
Good times!

I still prefer Stamina. Then again, I tend to be pretty active. Poison and Dark Miasma definitely "need" Stamina, ultimately. The way I run my FF and Traps guys, I still feel I need it, because I'm usually running a bunch of toggles (Maneuvers, Tough, Weave, Dispersion Bubble, Hover, Patron Armor Toggle, sometimes Tactics, etc). So to me, Stamina is always desired on a Mastermind.
Now, unlike other characters, you can delay picking it up. I don't push for Stamina at 20 like I do on other characters. But my personal preference is to always take it.

Will Ultra mode require DirectX 11? I use Windows XP, and I have no desire or plan to upgrade to Vista or Windows 7 (Vista do-over) for now. Maybe on my next PC but not on my current one.
Will the Ultra Mode make COH no longer work on Windows XP (i.e. use DirectX 11)?
Thanks,

Quote:I find it extremely useful even on its own, as long as you don't expect to be able to alpha-strike the majority of the spawn. If you've got any other method of surviving other than "I have to stun everyone with my opener or else I'm dead" then its a great power. My Illusion/Storm uses it all the time, because I've got other tools in my kit. Hurricane and Spectral Terror both allow me the leeway to then stun all the minions. Taking a bunch of minions out of the fight is golden, especially at higher levels where minions get some pretty nasty powers. My Ice/Storm uses it to great effect too. Ice slick and Arctic Air and freezing rain and other powers really let you get in and leverage the power.I have it on my Earth/Storm and my Grav/Storm, which are both builds that can take advantage of stacking stuns. It is mostly not worth taking on controllers who don't have another Stun to stack.
It is trivial to perma too, so as long as you can get in close among your foes, you can keep all of the minions out of the fight forever. I love this and rely on it often.
But, maybe that's just me.

All,
I have a friend who wants to PVP. I strictly PVE so I know nothing about it. I told him I'd research a few builds (as in primary/secondary) for him to try. He seems to like hero side (he is new to the game generally as well). I've been reading posts and figured out a few good sets that are supposedly good (tho I'm not always sure why). But, I was hoping you guys would chime in on what the good combos are hero side.
I was thinking of recommending to him:
Fire/Regen scrapper
Fire/SS tanker
???/Energy Melee blaster
What would be a good primary for a blaster? Psi? Rad? Sonic? Fire?
Are there any other obvious/good combos that I could lay in front of him to try out? I'm willing to hear villain opinions also but I think he will probably stay hero side for now.
Thanks,
Lewis -
* I like the feel of running in and putting the hurt on.
* I like having mez protection AND damage. I'd love to like blasters, but I won't play them due to lack of mezz protection. I'll do corruptors and defenders, but not blasters. So to me, a scrapper is a Blaster that makes sense (mez protection).
* I love defense sets thanks to softcapping. Scrappers are the best AT for me when pursuing a softcapped build. Damage AND survivability. Rock on! Tankers dont always satisfy for damage, and for Brutes well, I hate chasing the Fury bar.
* I like smacking a dude in the face! Then again! Then aga ... oh, he's dead. Super Sweet!

I know its unpopular, but I just don't want to take the Fire epic. It'd be cool, but I actually want to take most of my primary and secondary, AND I want super speed, stamina, Tough, Weave and Combat Jumping.
So there isnt any room for the fire epic at all unless I drop Grant Cover and Fire Breath and maybe one other attacks from the primary.
So I'm just planning on Fire/SD/(none). I know I'm crazy. I still expect elation.

Quote:I agree, for some of my characters it wouldn't feel right. For those characters, I just keep doing radio missions or AE missions against non-cosmic type plots. You can fight CoT and Council all the way up to 50 (assuming the character is still fun to play).Long before I get to level 50, most of my characters feel pretty darn well-established for how I see them, and it almost seems like they start to lose their identity when I try to force them farther on and into stories that really don't fit their concept at all

Others have said it, but hero side, I think Scrappers are the best characters for a new player. Villain side, it would be either a Brute or a Mastermind. In all those cases, you will feel effective from level 1 to 50 AND the gameplay is straightforward.
One tip would be to make sure you stick around for a while. The higher level you are, the more crazy over the top fun you'll have from your own powers and from enemy powers. There are some fun things in this game, and so much to see!

Quote:I'd go so far as to say that I'm opposed to new endgame content, not merely indifferent.Conversely, I'd love more end game content (loosely defined), and I'm shocked that almost any long-time player would be indifferent towards it.
I mean, there are some additions to the game, like animated tails, that don't detract from gameplay if you don't want them (other than, in theory, a use of developer resources). However, an endgame system totally screws me over. I admit its because I have a specific set of preferences and pet peeves, but its a radical change for me, even based on what we can only guess at as being true (in all likelihood).
I like playing heroes to level 50 and then having them in my "collection." Currently, any level 50 in my collection can be taken off the shelf and taken for a spin on ANY content in the game. I can have SOs, or a low recharge / cheap build of IOs, or a mega super uber build, but in each case I'm welcome and helpful on all content. I'm also eligible for all content on a whim when I'm in the mood to play anything in my collection of 50s. A new endgame system will change all that. It WILL make players more powerful.
A dev commented that the benefits (of improving through the new endgame system) wouldn't apply to the normal game scenarios because they didnt want people who'd benefitted from the new system to be able to buzzsaw Monster Island solo. Any content that requires characters on that level (capable of soloing GMs) is likely going to be hard enough or competitive enough that my huge list of collected characters will be useless on such a team. That INSTANTLY makes all my level 50s useless / wasted effort. The whole purpose is to get them to the point where I can say to a team "Oh, you wanted an Earth/Storm controller? I have that exact build at 50. Oh, you'd rather have a softcapped Katana/SR? Got one of them too." This level of new content is likely to make all my level 50 heroes OBSOLETE.
At the very least, I'll have to play my 50s through a lot of the endgame system to have them useful on endgame content. The devs wont make it trivial to max out whatever this new endgame content is. Otherwise, whats the point. So anyone with LOTS of level 50 characters is kinda boned *IF* (like me) its important to you to be able to do any content on ANY of them with welcome smiles from teammates.
So catgirl tails and a new naming scheme with global suffixes doesnt hurt people at all (IMO) whereas a new endgame system makes my previous efforts (of making a stable of alts I can take out on a whim for endgame content) null and void. 5.5 years of wasted "pretties" being collected. At least that's my fear, that this new endgame system will undermine all my previous time. It'd be different if I had only 1, 2, or even 5 characters at level 50.
Still, I can't begrudge them putting it in. I'm in the minority, so I'll have to swallow my complaints.
If the new system affects me as I fear it will, I may have to pick 1 character per account to be my UBER character, and plink with endgame content when I'm in the mood, but I'll mostly be working on my other not-50-yet fun projects. I'll just have to hope that a smile and a nod on the global channel of my choice will still get my non-uber characters in for an ITF, and I'll just have to regret that the hundred or more hours on that character didn't get me into the new endgame.

Quote:I don't think so. I found the original announcement to be straightforward.Perhaps that's the easiest explanation for this level of "complication".
They're probably hoping enough people choose to double-pay to make it worth all this silliness.
Pre-purchase with no free month and you'll get early access due to it being through their store (and so tied into the game). Pre-order through a retail outlet and no early access goodies, but you get the usual free month cause its a stand-alone box. Later, if you pre-purchased, you can pick up the goodies in a separate transaction just like they've done in the past. Easy peasy.
I'm sure they'll be delighted with extra money though.

I think he does. That's why he mentioned one when referring to the other. He did something similar with Pain and Empathy. While they are more different, the devs stated that they considered Pain to be the villain equivalent of Empathy, so he did the same reference in his list between the sets.
Basically, he understood that Ninja and Katana will never need to be proliferated, and that Pain and Empathy will probably never be proliferated due to dev opinion.
Lewis -
Here are the proliferation options I want, largely from most hugely desired to least hugely desired!
I will also list the combo that makes me really want the combo.
Traps for Controllers -- Gravity/Traps (and Earth/Traps)
Dark Miasma for Controllers -- Fire/Dark
Poison for Controllers -- Earth/Poison
Illusion for Dominators -- Illusion/Psychic (and Illusion/Energy)
Ice Armor for Scrappers -- Dual Blades / Ice
Ice Armor for Brutes -- Claws / Ice
Axe for Scrappers -- Axe / Super Reflexes
Mace for Scrappers -- Mace / Shield
Fire Blast for Defenders -- Storm / Fire
Radiation for Masterminds -- Thugs/Rad
Broadsword for Tankers -- Shield / Broadsword
ALSO! I would controversially want Super Reflexes for Blasters so I can make Dual Pistols / Super Reflexes. No? OK how about Energy Aura?
Lewis -
I think the best options are Illusion/Thermal or Earth/Thermal.
If you want to be able to solo in a pinch prior to level 32 or 33, Illusion/Thermal is the way to go. Otherwise, if you can stand teaming until 32+ then I prefer Earth/Thermal. Earth is the controller's controller IMO. Its good enough to stand on its own for being the control set for a big team, even without a secondary to augment it. Thermal is a great all around team tool for heals, buffs and debuffs.
Basically, I'd put Earth/Thermal as the #2 ultimate team controller, barely behind Earth/Rad.
Lewis -
I meant DM/SD.
I think I'll try to show a little willpower and keep my SD/DM as a Tanker. I would like to have a Shield Defense Tanker on each of my accounts. I dunno. My active character I'm working on now is Dual Blades / SR anyway. So I'll just enjoy that for a while. But after that, either Elec/Shield or Fire/Shield or both. I should really leave the other stuff alone for now.
The weird thing is that I'm a controller at heart, but controlling got me into tanking, and my love for punching/slashing things in the face as a tank has got me into scrappers recently. But I have to say scrappers are pretty entertaining. Its great for me too coming from the controller background because I'm used to low damage. That lets me enjoy low recharge scrappers simply because they still crush my controllers in terms of damage. Being able to enjoy low recharge builds and not caring about hp and regen and whatnot, that really keeps my costs down. Keeping costs down is important for an altaholic.
Lewis -
I actually have a lowbie SD/DM tanker. Level 11 or so. Maybe I'll re-make her as DM/SD. I already have plenty of tankers for times when I want to tank.
Yeah I just need to make 8 new scrappers (Fire/SD, Fire/SR, DM/SR, SM/SD, Elec/SD, MA/SR, MA/SD, Broadsword/SD) and I'll be all set.
Lewis -
-
Yeah. I still kinda WANT the character to be Fire/SR. Some part of me is considering making both Fire/SR and Fire/SD. It is a part of me I don't like.
Man, I so wish my DM/WP and MA/WP weren't in the low 40s. I really kinda want to remake them as /SR. I also wish we weren't having an unknown new endgame system coming, because I already have too many characters to bring though it. I don't need more.
Bah!
Lewis -
I don't really want to drop Hasten or Grant Cover. That pretty much forces me to drop Physical Perfection. Which I am fine with.

Quote:Oddly, I feel the EXACT same way about new series of Doctor Who!I've lost interest only because they made the mistake of announcing the damn thing, like, a year ahead of schedule, and I'm a bit too level-headed to maintain excitement for more than, like, a week. I just sloshes over the side, you see. Knowing about things in advance just makes me get used to the excitement in advance, so what could have been "Oh, sweet Jesus! I love this!" turns into "Oh, it's time for that? Good, I guess. Give it here."

Quote:Thanks. To Lewis, awesome idea, man. I'll be checking it out sometime!
The page generates 3 columns with a random roll for each non-unlockable AT. It also randomly picks a hero AT, a villain AT, and an AT across all of them. That way, for a single random character, you've got 3 columns to look at (if you cant live with column one) and you can make yourself use the random AT it rolled.
For teams, with friends, you can do interesting things like:
[RELAXED] Everything rolled is available (all 3 columns), friends squabble over who gets what from all 15 results (or 30 results if you are playing in RWZ AE or in the upcoming Going Rogue).
[LIMITED] Any ONE column is available, but the column used must be used by everyone. So, you get to squabble over which column to use, then over who gets to play what from within the column selected.
[STRICT] You must use column one. You still get to squabble over who plays what.
As I said in an earlier post, this worked for a while until the min-maxer in our group (who is also the complainer in our group) got sick of Martial Arts / Invulnerability. I still love and play my Mind/TA controller, even tho we didn't stick out our "Random Theme Group" to level 50.
Anyway, its just a time killer, and its kinda amusing. Here is the link again for convenience. http://www.lwb.org/compgeek/coh/random_at.php

SQ,
I'm not sure how looking at Mids helps. Well, you either mean to use Mids to find the illegal combos, or for ideas.
If you mean Illegal combos, using Mids is a bit painstaking and tedious. There are a lot of combos to look through (Mids flags the powers in Orange when the combo isn't allowed). I knew to look at everything with Shields, but I had no idea that Claws/Stone didnt work. I would have had to use brute force (heh). Not ideal. That's why I came here, hoping player knowledge would save me from looking through everything.
If you mean use Mids for ideas, the point isn't to get ideas. I have already made all 124 of the cool characters I've ever wanted to make.Nah, the point is to have a ramdomizer in case I just decide that I'm going to play a random character whether I like it or not. Its also good for making a random team with friends. You know, roll a random primary/secondary for each of the 5 hero ATs, then have you and your 3 other buddies squabble over who plays what, and then just deal with whatever the team was as rolled randomly from 1-50.
Mids doesn't really help with that.
I hope that answered the question for ya.

FF,
Why do all the builds I see skip Fire Sword and take Scorch instead? Is Scorch better? I kinda wanted the sword for concept. Also, while I like your build and I like the presence of Physical Perfection, I don't really like the fact that Grant Cover is missing. Isnt it key to having some Defense Debuff Resistance?
Thanks for the effort, I'll study it. I see some things in your build I'll likely use.
