All,
This is a bit off topic, since the thread is about a Leveling build. Though when I played my Illusion/Storm up back in the day, I only had Blind and Spectral for my attacks. But anyway, I wanted to post my current end-game build just because I finally got him all slotted out just like he is here, with only 2 exceptions. I don't have the (gratuitous) single Apocalypse Damage IO in Blind yet. Instead, I only have 2 generic level 50 damage IOs. I don't know that I'll ever have it since the damage difference is super tiny, and the IO sells for so much. Also, I am only just now starting to work on my Alpha stuff. I don't even have Tier 1 spiritual yet. However, even without Spiritual, the build is perma-hasten and has 61.5 recharge on PA. Once I get Tier 4 Spiritual, he will be truly perma-PA, since my recharge on PA will then be 56.8.
Anyway, basically, I've been having a good time since spending the cash / time / Hero Merits / etc on this guy, so I'm posting it just for fun. This is one of my oldest characters, and he is probably in my top 3 favorite characters that I have.

Thanks for the replies. More opinions are perfectly welcome since I'm not decided yet.
More specifically ...
Local_Man,
I love single target intangible powers for "oh crap I am not ready for THAT yet" situations. But I hear ya.
Oedipus,
I did not intend for the Kismet to be in PFF. I meant to put a Karma level 10 -knockback there just to have even more -knockback.
As for changing to aid self and primal, I think your build is cool, but I just dont want aid self. Also, as for primal, I kinda resent powers that you "have" to take. I am sure everyone would love power boosted shields, but I dont want primal or power boost.
If I found myself in lots of trials where people expected it, I would simply make a second build, a super cheap build (in that I wouldnt focus on recharge at all). I would buy into the defense softcapping for ranged with Aid Self and Power boost, but I'd do it on the cheap with no money of significance spent on recharge.
Thanks to everyone for the responses! I am open to more, though I reserve the right to be a Picky Blintz, as always.

Oedipus,
Thanks for the reply. I have exhausted my pools. Also, I kinda enjoy skipping Aid Self on soft-capped characters, especially since I'm not trying to do anything specific such as solo any particular creature. It makes things more exciting.I figure that if I actually play the character up, then I'll probably invest the time and pick up the Incarnate heal. Good enough for me.
Anyway, for reference, here is the build with the 3 gaps in it. The gaps are at 12, 38, and 47, but they could be shuffled around.
Thanks,
Lewis

All,
I've got a Mind/FF/Mace controller I'm planning. The character will be shooting for self-softcapping (or close) and good overall recharge. In my build I will have room for 3 bonus/fun powers. Basically, after taking care of my own control, defense, damage, and ally buffing, I've got 3 spots left in my build.
Powers I have not yet committed to are: Force Bolt, Detention Field, Telekinesis, Force Bubble. I have 3 powers open in my build (but no slots open).
Which three of these four powers would you find most useful?
I lean towards Telekinesis, Force Bolt, and Detention Field, since I almost never seem to remember to turn on Force Bubble. However, there are certain situations where a near-fully soft-capped character with Force Bubble would be invaluable.
But I dunno. I'm interested in any opinions you guys have.
Thanks,
Lewis -
No worries. I made my request with the understanding that technical and practical issues could impact the answer. It's all good.

Maybe you should have gone with the tv-safe microbe-untranslated Farscape designation (Frell).

I have a question about the market, or maybe two related questions now that I think about it.
The paragon market page mentions buying everything in-game. Does this mean that my purchase of paragon points, and my purchase of paragon items, are totally apart from account management and my account payment method?
Or am I still buying paragon points against my credit card that is on file and the monthly limit on spending therefore still applies?
Or will I, at any time, simply be able to put in a credit card while in game and buy paragon points independent of my billing setup?
My hope is that my credit card I use to pay my sub, which I buy in yearly blocks, can be left on file and unchanged; and that in-game when I have the urge, I can just enter a credit card (same OR different one) and plunk down the cash for 16000 pps or more in one go, just because I want to.
That also makes me wonder if, in the case of having multiple COH accounts connected to a master account, when I buy paragon points, do they apply to the specific account I am on in game or do they push up to my master account, thereby allowing me to spread those 16000 paragon points I just bought in any way I like across my affiliated accounts?
Again, my hope is that I will be able to be able to just enter my credit card and buy a hunk of points without all this monthly limit stuff ($100 by default). I also dont want every little paragon points transaction making activity happen on my credit card. Ive had my card company see 5 or 6 transactions happen and then they blocked my card and had the fraud division talk to me before unfreezing it.
I just want to be able to drop a cool $100 to $1000 on my account in as few actual credit card transactions as possible so that I can just have a pool of points out there to be used by me as slowly or as erratically as my mood dictates, without any hassles. Maybe I will nurse my $1000 over a two year period, or maybe over Christmas I will spend 40000 pps and load up 80000 more. But I dont want my credit card being hit 50 times for $1.25 each followed by $10 & $10 simply because I decided to buy 50 of the new scaling IOs, then decided to transfer 2 characters and rename one all within one hour.
I want to avoid hassles and indulge my whims.
Will this be possible?
Thanks,
Lewis -
You could always go with a Mind/Storm controller. It would be like you were the love child of that one famous mutant and that other famous mutant, from a dark future which may or may not come to pass!
Edit: also you could consider psy/mental blasters, if that hasnt been mentioned. I didnt read every post.
Lewis -
I am supef happy about the extra page of character slots. Yay!
Lewis -
Yeah, I just want to agree that Fire is best, then either Energy or Thorns.
Lewis -
I am well late to this thread, but nice job!
Lewis -
I havent checked to see if I was affected, but I have a request. Going forward would there be any chance of posting the list of whacked global names, just in the interest of disclosure and communication?
Lewis -
Z,
You are such a tease. Call me.
L -
Brandx,
Heh. You dont know me very well, do you? Options exist, but not for me. I'm trapped in here with me and I can't get out!It is not for nothing that I am known among friends as "quirkman".
Lewis -
Brandx,
Obviously.
But due to my own personal quirks, no other servers exist for me. I already have 3 maxed out accounts, and I am unwilling to play on other servers or open a fourth account. So I am simply hoping for more flexibility. Does wanting this, and being willing to pay for the privelidge make me a bad person or something?
Lewis -
Yes I think the non masterminds will have the top power in the form of a pbaoe ... Making fire/poison, ice/poison and elec/poison particularly interesting.
Lewis -
I am definitely cravimg info. The two thimgs I most want to know:
1) Can I buy/gift stuff to friends easily? Like could I pay for unlocking content for a friend?
2) Will we be able to buy a 4th page of characters? One dev comment that came from either comic con or a ustream chat said that they agreed with the idea or that they liked it. But right now my head is banging on the ceiling. I am having to delete level 40+ characters every time I want to make something new.
*Homer Simpson Voice* "Stupid 36 character limit thingy!"

Quote:Well, large parts of COH are unchallenging, so there is at least one game. I consider Diablo 2 to be largely unchallenging outside Hell difficulty (which I never play).I am trying to think of a game that lacks any challenge and I am failing. Key components of games are goals, rules, challenge, and interaction. Games generally involve mental or physical stimulation, and often both.
Please note, I am not ridiculing you, but I am instead trying to understand what you are saying. I believe you may have overstated your intent. Read the following as a real inquiry with no tone other than questioning.
Dressing up your character may be art, but once you choose to start pushing buttons in a specific order to achieve certain goals, you are engaging in a challenge. Would you rather just push the space button and have your character display awesome animations while you move through the game on rails, with scripted encounters where you will always win, even though some of those fights may be close? That sounds more like a movie than a game to me and I think it would fail to hold many people's interest for long.
As for your taking the point to the extreme of me just wanting to push a button and watch a slide show, that *is* ridicule. But I dont mind. Have at it, hoss.
I dont play against malta, DE, knives of artemis, nemesis, longbow, EBs, incarnate foes, or AVs unless I am forced to for access to things I want (like hero merits or patron arcs) I am even wary of carnies and arachnos. I find them irritating. I prefer foes that I can crush with an SO build without thinking about it. And then I build for permahasten or def cap to make it easier. I like to be able to just run into a bunch of foes with scrapperlock and come out on top without too much effort. Oh and when I do have to deal with gated/difficult stuff I jump on my friends team where he 7-boxes and everybody on the team has 150 defense thanks to the five to seven bubblers on the team.
Also, my only real reason for unlocking alpha content is to get the level shift so that I am effectively +1 when I am working on tedious content to get my hero merits. Or +2 if I set the difficulty to -1 so that I dont have to go change it for DE or Malta missions.
I have to say though that recently I have gravitated from playing controllers to playing brutes and scrappers, and its funny how much easier the game is. I can faceroll lots harder content. Plenty of things ignore my controls but not much ignores a sword to the head.
Now if you want to ridicule all of that, well I can see that. But I dont have any desire to press a button and just watch a movie for 2 hours. I do like relaxing and crushing my foes with minimal to moderate effort. If you see them as the same thing well then you may as well move on. Nothing to see or understand here.We are simply from different worlds.

I dont really like challenge in any game, be it difficulty or in terms of having to leverage all the tools I have at my availability. I prefer to be able to just kick back and relax.

Or maybe a Frankenstein descendent from the future, after the family heirs have perfected the technology and started working on rudimentary time travel. So they could save and heal all the great minds from the past on their deathbeds and snatch them away to the future.
Is the name Frankenstein 5000 taken? Or campier still, Frankenstein 5000 A.D.
EDIT: Actually, I think the best would be Frankenstein A.D. 5000. Maybe.

Quote:You will still need boxing and tough to get weave, because it seems that the tier 4 powers still require 2 lower picks. So if you ONLY want tough, you wont need boxing. But if you want both tough and weave, you will need boxing (or kick).I hate when they do stuff that Build-breaks me >< Respeccing is such a hassle because I don't remember what I picked at which level to get all my slotting right....
buuut I guess It's a cool thing that I don't need boxing to get tough/weave.
Thats why there is some sadness.
