ranged dominator

here is the problem i always have with dominators:
as long as i am outside the mobs i have a great overview of whats happening all the time
but when i decide to go into melee range i instantly loose this overview and have serious problems to find out which guy i should attack now
thats why i need a dominator that stays always at range
so whats the best secondary to pair with plant for being ranged all the time (i wont play fire as a secondary)
i will take plant controll because it has a great variaty of powerpicks and the unique pseudopetpower creepers
please comment the choice a bit

Well Fiery Assault is the best Ranged secondary. It's got three ranged blasts with better than average damage plus a heavy cone. While it has melee range powers none of them are hugely critical.

Now if you won't play Fire it's hard to say. Thorns is probably your next best bet. You aren't exactly playing to it's strengths at range but it does at least have three ranged blasts and a reasonably heavy ranged cone. It's also got some extra control to help you stay at range.

Energy Assault is has a pretty solid ranged attack chain now as well, although you are missing out on some of its best attacks if you avoid melee. But power push + power blast + power burst make for a solid, hard hitting ranged attack chain.

Yeah, I just want to agree that Fire is best, then either Energy or Thorns.

Ice isn't that bad at range with three blasts and a good cone. The slow and -recharge are useful for keeping things at range and mitigating damage. The attacks are also very fast at animating.

Still, melee attacks are usually a lot better than the ranged ones. For your melee problems - you don't have to stay in melee the whole time; throw out controls at range, throw out some ranged attacks, run/jump in and hit a few in melee, jump out, rinse and repeat.

You have already received good advice on the better ranged sets, so I will not rehash that. However, I can offer some advice which may help you better keep your overview even in melee (you may play a melee character again sometime). Pull your camera out. It can take some getting used to the wider view and being farther away from your character, but it is well worth the learning curve to gain better situational awareness long-term.

True, however I would say that the lack of any ranged AoEs hurts Energy as a ranged-only set.

i agree that fire is prolly the best, thorn has the drawback of causing redraw when you use a non thorn attack and energy has a lack of aoe, but to each his own

energy however can be supplemented through the energy mastery APP which gives you energy torrent and the target aoe (cant recall the name atm lol) (this is also if you do not want anything fire, otherwise i would suggest fire mastery over this for rain of fire and fire ball)

I recently decided to make my mind/psi dom purely ranged since I too prefer being able to see the whole battlefield from a ranged perspective for tactical reasons. What I did was to simply ignore psionic dart (the weak first attack you have no choice but to take) and use Dominate in it's place as a frankenslotted damage/control power. So my typical attack chain consists of dominate, subdue, levitate (technically speaking I could use mental blast for higher damage instead of levitate but i prefer having the smashing damage and knock up of levitate for the soft control and diversity of damage type.)

I then replaced psychic shockwave with psionic tornado from the APP so all three of my aoes were at range (psychic scream, terrify, psionic tornado). typically I'd open with the psionic tornado then scream/terrify. About the only melee-range power I have left is drain psyche which frankly I have little reason to use unless the mob has high regen. (I have high enough passive endurance recovery that end isn't an issue and my ranged defense is relatively decent so the regen aspect is also not a priority)

For other powerset combos all of the dom assault sets have at least 2 ranged damage powers and with the amount of recharge most doms have trying to get perma dom you only need about 3 ranged damage powers to have a steady attack chain. Using the single target hold from your primary as a damage power using some creative slotting so it can do double duty as a control power would be the easiest way I can think of to go purely range. Mind and Gravity both include direct damage powers that you could use to supplement your attack chain.

For a plant/thorns character you could simply use Thorny Darts, Impale and Thorn Barrage (40 yard range but 2 lvl 50 range IOs make it about 60) as your single target attack chain. Unfortunately two of the three aoe damage powers for thorns are melee but you could supplement your ranged aoe damage with an APP/PPP aoe damage power. The Primal Forces and Fire APP's are a good choice for this since they have 2 ranged aoes you can pick up.

Two melee attacks, the rest ranged. What are the melee there for? Well, once she's got everyone turned into a pinata, she can close to melee range and apply savage beatdowns. Also, wormhole plus total focus is instant boss stun, in the days before you can afford permadom.
