  1. Seems like another publicity stunt to me. I guess its easier to just rework an existing character than to try to do something bold and original, like create an all-new character for whom it works and fits organically. But, that's just me.

That being said, I see 4 front-runners for it.

Aquaman- this would be a facepalm move, but seeing as they've crapped on so much history as it is, they could easily eliminate Mera, Arthur Jr., and his other son.

Atom (Ray Palmer)- a very recognizable character, with not too much solid history. His marriage to Jean Loring was weird as hell anyway.

Booster Gold- Just a gut instinct.

Shazam- Since they pretty much threw out the Captain Marvel name and are essentially rewriting the character as a whole, they could do it quite easily with Billy Batson. In truth, this would be the one that actually makes the most sense anyway. Billy is in his early teens, so it would provide the opportunity for them to show him develop as a gay character, not just a character they decided to make gay.
  2. Try Astro City as well. Its hit and miss sometimes, but when its on, its pretty damn good.
  3. I'd also recommend getting the Gotham Central TPBs. That series was all about the Gotham Police Department. Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka at their best. Great run. I was very bummed when they cancelled that series.

Also, if you want a gritty/gory skewed look at superheros, check out The Boys by Garth Ennis.
I'll second The Boys. It is very very very very very adult material, but funny, violent, and irreverent as hell.
  5. We saw this trailer in front of the Avengers, and just laughed our ***** off. Its just utterly ridiculous blow-stuff-up fun. I love that they seem to be having so much fun with it. I'll definitely be going.
  6. I would suggest getting the TPBs of Planetary. Probably my favorite comic down in the last 15 years. Great stories, and John Cassady's art simply cannot be beat.

    Avengers

Just got back from seeing it in IMAX 3D. I can't recall the last time I had that much fun at a movie. I loved it, my kids loved it, even my wife loved it. They got everything just about as perfect as you could hope for. The Hulk-Loki exchange is just pure gold. I can't wait for their next one.

    .
Dude, it's been years now. Just let it go man.
  9. One of the things that I really loved about the recent JSA and Justice Society series was that they touched on the generational legacy of the "first" superheroes. I can see their point of view in trying to attract new readers by essentially taking the JSA back to being young and rebooting the entire group of characters. I just don't happen to agree with it.

I would be much more intrigued to see them really play out the long term story of the JSA, starting from the 40's. That's 70 years of time now. I would love to see them expand upon the old original Earth-2 elements. Show the children of the JSA, and their children, and their children. Generations of heroes, legacies, sidekicks growing up into heroes, and so on. The possibilities there are endless. Really take hold of it and run with it. Open it up, go crazy, and have fun.

You'd have Kryptonians (Superman and Power Girl) who don't age normally, Amazons (Wonder Woman) to play with, Nth metal and the Hawk legacy, the Helmet of Fate, a Flash (and what would be the ramifications of that being in your gene pool), a Green Lantern ring, Hourman's Miraclo (drug improvement and genetic impact), the Atom's atomic powers (and their genetic impact), the Thunderbolt, Starman's cosmic rod technology, the Bat-mantle and everything that goes along with it. The potential storylines are limitless.

You'd have some of the original heroes still around to appeal to the traditionalist, and you'd have free rein to complete recreate and reimagine the rest. Say Flash has a super-powered kid, who ends up with someone's else's super-powered kid. What would their kids be like? And so on down the line. Its an opportunity to populate a well-known existing world with an entirely new cast of characters while still respecting the legacy of the old.

That's just my take. Making everyone young and starting over just seems too simplistic. I'd like to see them really go for it. Take the names and the legacies and run wild with them.

I browsed it at the comics shop. Its not bad if you simply treat it as an Elseworlds excursion. Its a version of the JSA, just not my version of the JSA. I dropped DC as a whole with the New 52 thing, and have no real intention to go back. Maybe for a TPB, but that's it.
  11. Beautiful art by Nicola Scott. Interesting story. I still absolutely hate that they're discarding the Justice Society's WWII origins. I get the whole updating for a modern era and all that, but what MADE the JSA who they were was where and when they had come from.
  12. Someone needs to tell them to stop live publishing on Tanker Tuesday. Its getting old.
  13. Mark Millar had nothing to do with Sin City. I don't know that I'd call him a really big deal either. He writes a lot of stuff that's meant to go directly to film, so good for him. Most of his writing makes me think he's trying to channel Warren Ellis and Garth Ennis, but not quite measuring up.
  14. Two thumbs up. Funny, and scary, and kinda creepy. Very fun movie. Bradley Whitford and Richard Jenkins just kill in all their scenes.
  15. One of my great sadnesses in life is that they cancelled Married with Children without giving them the chance to do a series finale. Of course, that's probably part of the reason that they did cancel it that way. I would have loved to have seen the scorched earth that MwC would have left if they'd known it was their last episode.

In the immortal words of Al Bundy: "It is okay to call hooters knockers, and sometimes snack trays."
  16. Elec/Rad troller from 43 to 45, cuz frankly, better things to do.
  17. please let lori be dead please let lori be dead please let lori be dead please let lori be dead please let lori be dead...

i know.. i know.. but i can hope...

    ***SPOILER ALERT***

excellent fake out at the end as well. Bringing in Michael Raymond-James (soooo good in the criminally underappreciated Terriers) was a great touch. Here I was thinking he's going to make a great new addition to the cast, how he would affect the leadership dynamic between Rick/Shane/Hershel... then BAM! right through the head. That was awesome.

I will now derail this thread with one of the finest simultaneous guitar/bass performances EVER. Just cuz.

  19. While I do admire the collection of talent they've gathered to work on this, I can't help feeling that its utterly unnecessary. Watchmen is a perfectly contained story unto itself. I get that DC wants to cash in on all those of us who will probably let our curiousity outweigh our good sense. Its a good business move, if not a good creative move.

And I can't feeling that Alan Moore is somewhere in a dark, dank basement working out an evil revenge incantation involving semen and poop.
  20. I always look at it from the Dr. Manhattan point of view. When you're powerful enough, things like clothes just don't matter anymore. Follow his look chronologically through Watchmen. He starts out in a full-body suit, then transitions to briefs and a tank top, then down to just the briefs, then down to a weird man-thong thing, and finally he just says "Eff it, I'm Dr. Manhattan, I'm going buck nekkid".

If I was that powerful and that ripped, I'd probably run around in as little as possible too.

That would require me turning my brain on long enough to figure the whole process out for doing that, and I just don't know that I can generate that much caring about it... but thanks for the support!
  22. I'm still convinced that Pops Bartowski is alive out there somewhere and that the show should really end with little baby Clara crawling around and grabbing a pair of sunglasses that someone left lying around and putting them on....

I have no idea what section this should actually go in, but I'll put it out here.

    Dear Devs,

Please for the love of all that is good in the world, will you lower the minimum team requirement for the LGTF? The damn incarnate trials have made it near impossible to do anything else. Finding a full team of 8 is just ridiculous. Make it 6, or even better 4. Then some of us who don't give a flying rat's *** about the incarnate stuff will have a better chance of being able to actually do some of the other content that is still in the game. That is all.
