Quote:I think "wife aggro" carries far more weight. The SG can't make your life outside of the game a living hell if they feel you aren't paying enough attention to them. Well, they could if they were crazy stalker-y types, but that's a whole other issue."SG is calling" is a plausible excuse (As long as the character is actually a member of an SG) as is something along the lines of "wife aggro". It doesn't automatically mean "hey, I know I said I'd help you take care of this, but someone I like better is here, so screw you, I'm leaving right now," unless the character isn't a member of an SG which is plain to see if he's lying or not because SG membership is right under the characters name.

Funny, because that's exactly what "moral obligations" refer to.
But, no, you're not "morally obligated" to report bugs and exploits. Just to not abuse them when you find them. I think it's a bit...jerkish to leave them unreported, but that's just me. That's not the same as saying you have a "moral obligation" to report them. There's a difference between consideration for your fellow players ( and the devs ) and "moral obligations".
Quote:This post exactly.
Paying for a game (or anything else) is pure economics. Morality and economics are utterly irrelevant to each other.
Only by the most stupidly liberal definitions of the term. -
All your contacts send you to missions in Galaxy City
Your first mission out of the Tutorial is to go give Lord Recluse a wedgie
The "Check Name" button in the character creator just laughs at you -

Quote:I'd like to see that character. MAKE IT SO!This is a losing proposition. If five years from now a new character is introduced that is part man, part hyena, and he joins the Freedom Phalanx calling himself Mister Whiskers, and is represented in the game as a Claws/Electric Brute, and sits in Statesman's old chair people will be saying see, I told you the devs were bringing Statesman back.
-
How does it not make sense? It's not like they're going to be retconning him out of the lore completely. In CoH lore, States is apparently a big deal....you don't think he'd be memorialized? An homage on the login screen as well makes perfect sense.

Quote:Actually, it is still true. For most people, the money "gate" is just as much a deterrent from "flipping a switch" at their leisure as the time gate. Just because you have wads of cash to throw around for every convenience in the game if you wanted to doesn't mean everybody does.I honestly don't see why people are getting so defensive about a time gate that has always been pointless and purely based off the 'not a switch' statement. That statement is no longer true. Ergo, why time gate it? Let people have some more, oh what's that word...FREEDOM?
However, it is just that: a convenience. It's not game-breaking if those who do have tons of disposable income throw it at this purchase every day. But the people able to and willing to do that are going to be rare. Even for those who have the resources, it's not a big enough thing that I'd think a lot will drop the funds on it, especially since it can be done in game with a little more time. Ultimately, it's no bigger a deal than a vanity pet.
Edit: And I love that last line. It's like the people in WoW trying to whine about not enough PvP support by saying "It's World of **WAR***craft!1!111one!" Quit inserting your own implications into the title. -
Quote:It's not that they demand me to quit, but I'm sure as hell going to put them before a random PUG if they're looking for forces to pull off a trial or some such. Especially if the PUG is going bad. Yeah, I'm going to be more reluctant to leave the PUG if it's a TF or whatever, but if we're just running tips or something? I'm perfectly willing to ditch in a heartbeat in favor of an SG raid. We've all heard this before. Got to go, SG is calling! So does SG actually ever call? I've been in a few before (my mains are all in my own personal SG) and have never been called. Do some SGs demand you quit your team and come join them or else? Or is it much like I think and just the oldest excuse in the book to leave a crappy/boring team? Perhaps I'm missing out on something along the lines of YAY SG is here and calling, /quitteam.
Oh wait gotta go SG calls!
Naturally I'll give warning and wait for a convenient time. I won't just drop without a word in the middle of an AV fight. -

Quote:Avid MMO RPer for 12 years now. Tabletop gamer before that. Your response is utter ( Udder? ) bull fertilizer. Frankly, "RPers" like you are exactly why we have a bad reputation among non-RPers.This is a hilarious strawman and you should be ashamed for actually thinking it's worth writing. "Caring about immersion means you are telling everyone else what to do" is so absurd I would expect a four-year-old to call you out on it.
If you don't understand why letting other people buy their way through the game impacts immersion, you probably don't understand MMOs and why people prefer to roleplay in multiplayer games as opposed to single player ones.
Edit: Let me clarify: If you require everybody around you to conform to your ideals of "IC Immersion" in order to immerse yourself in the game and can't bring yourself to overlook those who don't, then you're a bad RPer. Period. Not everyone in the game is going to RP the same as you or even RP at all. Part of being a good RPer is working around that. -
No, L's hair kinda fits the emo-like image. I guess Kira's might, too. But are you gonna answer the question or just jump at the "take petty jabs at anime" bandwagon so you can convince yourself that you're "l33t"....?
-
-
Yes, but not as much time. They've set the "price" to where they want it with the gate. Quick question about the tokens, though: Is there a cooldown timer on them?
-
Not really. As others have said, you either pay for it with time or pay for it with money. It's not that difficult a concept to grasp. I don't see you whining about being able to buy cape and aura unlocks....

Quote:I can assure you that I'll care. I'm totally not willing to pay for something that I can earn in-game for free. That simple. And I'm far from alone in that. Why should I give a flying rat's @#$ how others do it?So now that the novelty of alignment change has worn off for some people, it's safe for the devs to turn it into for-profit sideline? The missions written around tips and alignment change are some of the best new content Paragon's added recently. Who will care now about their character's progress between the Cities of Heroes and Villains if it's reduced to a service charge?

I've been told I look a lot like Penn. Back when I still had long hair. Don't see it myself so much, but, hey...

Quote:Which isn't uncommon or necessarily a fault. Would you have high expectations of a chess player who called the knights "horsies"? The impression one would get from such a thing might turn out to be wrong, but that doesn't mean one is wrong for having said expectations. If one presents themselves as immature by speaking in such a manner, then that's the image that a lot of people are going to form.(Please note the difference between you and I: I don't judge you based on what you call your virtual Barbie dolls. You judge me, though, completely out of hand.)
Deny it all you want, but EVERYBODY judges other people on immediate first impressions, and almost always on seemingly trivial things. The mark of a person's quality is how readily they're willing to re-assess that judgment down the line as more information is gained about the other person. -
Quote:My point was that the word would have migrated over without that incident. It had already been established in MMO communities, sadly. No single event "made it relevant" here. Aside from the creation of the game as an MMO.Maybe you should reread the OP's question and the post I referenced before commenting.
The OPs Question was at the time I posted and still is...
"What I meant, and what people seem to have missed, is how it became a relevant term to this game, or alternatively to whatever other game it may have spawned from, and how it migrated to us."
Notice it is a multi part question one part being "and how it migrated to us."
My response was in reference to Lolipup who posted a private message from the Devs informing us as to where they think the name came from and why. Do you feel that information from developers of the game in question on the subject in question is not relevant or is incorrect in answering that part of the question?
Post from Lolipup -
Nah, "Mob" dates all the way back to the early days of MUDs.
-
Only in your own little fantasy world.
However, all said, I'm not saying not to use the term. You're free to call them whatever you want. But that doesn't mean I'm not free to find it an annoying and childish term. -
Quote:...except that "toon" to refer to MMO characters existed before COH was even a spark in whacko Jacko's eye. So, it may be an answer, but it's an inaccurate one.Thank you for taking the time to research and give us the likely answer to the initial question. We now return to our regularly scheduled debate "Is Toon a Derogatory Term."
Quote:Where, EXACTLY in this game do you see photorealistic representations of humans?
Hmm?
They're all rendered with a certain "comic book" style. Comic book, comic strip, animated comic = cartoon.
Let's try this again: Cartoon = the animated film/short/etc. NOT Bugs Bunny. Bugs Bunny is a cartoon CHARACTER, not a cartoon. ( The term "toon" to refer to characters such as Bugs Bunny comes from WFRR, and the characters referenced in that were all the "loony tunes"-esque characters. Hence the association carries over for a lot of people when used to refer to MMO characters ) Raiders of the Lost Arc is a movie. Indian Jones is a movie CHARACTER, not a movie. 24 is a TV show. Jack Bauer is a TV show CHARACTER, not a TV show.
Get it? Or do I need to use smaller words?
NOBODY refers to COH as a "cartoon". Most call it a "game". Why, then, would you use a term ascribed to cartoon characters to refer to the characters from a game? "Char" is just as short and FAR more accurate. By the way, I've never seen anyone use the term "toon" to refer to, say, Lara Croft, either. So it's specifically MMO characters. Are there enough holes in the "Well, it's because video games are animated pictures and animated pictures = cartoons" theory yet? I could go on to point out how that definition makes ALL films "cartoons".... -
Quote:No, but the characters called "toons" in it were the zany, slapstick kids' cartoon stars...Roger Rabbit was never quite a kid's movie. I mean, it was, but it was sufficiently adult that it could never be considered "kid's stuff".
Quote:Again, you are ascribing meaning where none exists. Cartoons are a medium. That's it. You don't see people going around saying "Don't call the Mona Lisa a painting, that diminishes it."
