Having checked into CO the past few days, I can say it has improved vastly from the early days after launch. It's still not up to CoH level, but I suppose it'll be a passable replacement when it comes time.

Quote:Turn off the outlining in the options. Though, the graphics still look too "plastic-y", that does helpI tried CO:
* Hate the graphics... to me the art is something that looks like it was made by a talented kid with crayons who loves outlining things in black just a bit too much
Quote:* I much, much, MUCH prefer RPGs to Action games and the very concept of having a "Block" button turns me off utterly...
Quote:* Do NOT tell me what powers I HAVE to choose... this is MY character... that was the most wonderful thing about CoH... the pure myriad of choices that made your character unique. -

It doesn't just look bad to current customers. It makes them look bad to POTENTIAL customers as well, which are often actually more valued than current customers by a company.
-
Seriously. That's NOT the kind of decision you make out of the blue without ticking off a LOT of paying customers. If their PR guys didn't warn them of that, they need to be fired.
-
Anyway, I'll go along with a lot of the other responses here: The fact that you drove me to the bar and bought me a couple drinks does not make you not a jackass for sucker punching me out of the blue. ( Edit: What? Where'd you think I was going with that? >.> )

Knowing when to reign in your temper-tantrums because they're not helping is NOT "stifling your first amendment right to free speech". It's using that right responsibly. Go crack open a ******* civics book before embarrassing yourself like that again.

Quote:If it was the only option to keep the game, I'd take it.I'd love to make this a poll, but can't find how, so I'll just ask.
If all your characters were deleted, your veteran status, everything (even forum posts), and you had to start from scratch, would you still continue to play this game, or would it be too much of a setback? -
Quote:The fact that NCSoft is willing to discuss it at all is what's giving us hope. We know it's not something to count on as a promise of anything, but if they haven't totally slammed the door yet...I want everyone to please temper their expectations with the word "discussions". Please, don't take this to mean more than it does, at this point in time.
...what I'm wondering is whether the fact that they're open to discussion isn't a reaction to the outcry from the players.... and/or their investors turning to them and saying "You cut one of your few titles that was turning a profit? What the pancake?!"
At this point, a small hope is reason to be excited. If it doesn't pan out, it doesn't pan out...but at least we have something to cling to. -
Quote:There is nothing at all silly about taking a chance. It's minimal effort and no harm is done in asking. Hope is a fundamental need in most people's life. We're all fully aware that the chances of this succeeding are near nil, but it's better to ask and be surprised if by some long shot chance it works than to just give up.At some point a long time from now you'll realise how utterly ludicrous it is to be trying an email campaign to Valve, so they'll use their own money to brawl over City of Heroes with NCSoft because you emailed them a bit.
You're asking them to make a simply colossal effort, which is what this is, for very little return. You know what, I think they're going to do nothing and continue to be mind bogglingly wealthy without the effort. -
Sent my letter, fully acknowledging that this was a long shot. I won't expect it, but it'd be a nice surprise if it happened. I mentioned in the letter that if nothing else, just making a public showing of an attempt would go a long way toward establishing a lot of goodwill toward those being burned by NCSoft in this move.

Quote:Uh...how does cutting a property that was making profit, even if it was small, save money?Long story short:
1) Q2 2012 was the first time ever that NCsoft was operating with a significantly NEGATIVE profit margin (ouch!).
2) City of Heroes had the lowest performing game sales (even Aion was doing much better...).
In a word, it wasn't Cryptic Studios withholding license renewal that doomed CoH... It wasn't NCsoft hating on American gamers... At the end of the day, NCsoft was in the red and they cut the lowest-performing IP in their stable of games (and also the one with a significant mount of unjustifiable expense) just to rescue their bottom line... Can't say I blame them from an investment perspective. Unfortunately for all of us that turned out to be City of Heroes.
See for yourself by getting the 2Q 2012, August 8th unaudited earnings report here:
http://global.ncsoft.com/global/ir/quarterly.aspx
I'm sure if NCsoft had maintained a profit this quarter, we wouldn't be in the predicament we are now. But they didn't and the price of doing business in a very competitive industry right now had to be paid...
Sorry folks. -

Quote:Kinda amuses me when I see someone identifying a cartoonist more by his side project than his main comic ( Least I Could Do ). He also does Looking For Group.Well I shot an email to both Ryan Sohmer of Gutters

Quote:Yeah, the "Gabe is the patron saint of gaming" may be a bit much ( though, Valve IS a fantastic gaming company in how it treats its people, I will say that. And has great customer relations policies as well ), but the EA=Hitler thing, that's being insulting. To Hitler.Not to Godw- Ok, to hell with it, TOTALLY Godwinning the thread and I don't care;
Wholesale destruction? Consuming other companies indiscriminatingly? Massive marketing spin? Unethical treatment of companies and consumers? Kills off and discards said companies when bled dry? Tells everyone who doesn't like it where to shove it?
If that's NOT like a media-world Hitler, then I don't know what the hell is. -
The majority of MMOs never even break 100k. Considering that CoH broke it and stayed there for nearly a decade is remarkable. The fact that it didn't go down below half of that on VIP subscriber numbers when it went F2P is amazing. The MMOs that break even 500k are a rarity. 60k is an easily sustainable and profitable subscriber base, especially when bolstered with a cash market. Hell, there are MMOs still being maintained on less than 10k.
-
Which is, while not hugely successful, adequately healthy for an MMO. That's not even taking its age into account. They can't all have WoW's numbers. In fact, those that do are flukes. Including WoW.
-
Quote:There's a reason this news was a shock: It was NOT dying. It wasn't millions strong like WoW, but CoH was staying consistently in a respectable population range for an 8 year old ( not a decade ) MMO.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9rrS32ctQk
EDIT: Don't kid yourself though, Valve has no reason to pick up a dying, decade old MMO. -
Quote:Pretty much goes without saying. And not just for closing the game in general, but the abruptness of it. Yanking the rug out from under the dev team like they did is nothing short of bull@#$%. NCSoft has shown us they don't give a damn about us or their employees. So, @#$% you, NCSoft.Quite simply, Boycott NCSoft. Don't buy their products. They're killing City of Heroes for no apparent reason, and pretty much giving the finger to a large group of customers. I think if they're gonna flip us off, we should do the same right back. Cancel any NCSoft Subscriptions, and get your friends to do so, too. Perhaps if enough people pitch in, they'll hear us and give us back our game.
I'm gonna be the first to pledge to do so. NCSoft will receive no more money from me unless City of Heroes and Paragon Studios survives. -
Dear Paragon Studios: Thank you for so many years of good times, good memories, and good friends made through the game. Good luck in the future.
Dear NCSoft: @#$% you. I've been a loyal customer since 2004. I even bought Guild Wars and Aion, though City of Heroes has always been my home. Now you pull the rug out from under us like this on a game that was still going strong? You've just guaranteed that I will never EVER buy another NCSoft game again. And you can bet your @#$ that there are lots of other customers like me. -
Why do you assume that everyone that says something stupid on the internet is trolling? What, you think there aren't true blue idiots out there?
-
Quote:It's a wonder he can even operate the computer.Wait a second. Are you actually saying that you have no idea how the devs could possibly be making more content now than before, and also don't understand why they have to charge more for some of the content they are making now? You actually think its a coincidence that they make more content now, and charge more for some of it?
Consider my mind officially blown. -
I do love how you think that's in the least bit relevant to their responses. The fact that you have reasons you like this game has nothing to do with your complaints being based on misinformation.
-
Quote:Really? You're using the term "slap in the face" on the internet and expecting to be taken seriously? What is a slap in the face is that the very same subscription fee was just fine for game play for a VERY LONG TIME. Freedom comes along and all of a sudden, it's no longer enough.
...looking past that, though...
Where were you for the 7ish years before Freedom? Did you miss all the costume packs that were released? The two expansions with power sets and costume sets exclusive to those expansions? That SUBSTANTIALLY slower rate of costume sets and powers and other such being released?
Ignoring the costume packs and expansions, the subscription was enough before, sure. FOR THE RATE OF CONTENT RELEASE THEN. Content release has been substantially ramped up since release, and specifically because they can fund it via the market now.
