Quote:It's more impressive to experience it. I remember one of my trips out to VA beach as a kid and fishing (on boat) and swimming (off) in the deep ocean. I recall a large shadow swimming well underneath me and imagining how big that thing must have been, then picturing how far down the water went from where I was.
Now, it can't have been that far, and it may have been my imagination, but thinking of how big a whale is, and it being that far below, then how far the ocean could be down... it was a daunting experience. It was probably just a sea turtle or something... but it left a mark on me that has had me staring out into space and trying to gauge the depth of stars between them and the moon and anything else I can make out, to compare depths... it's... awe inspiring, and terrifying, to our tiny mortal forms at the same time. When I actually focus to do it out in the middle of nowhere when I can actually see the milky way, I get a sense of vertigo which I find exhilarating.
yeah..... that's a pretty good summation, thinking about it now the "infinity" thing and the "deep ocean" thing may be representative of the same fear of..... i don't know, insignificance? absolute lack of control? both?
who knows, and i am past the point of defining my limits as a person, so these things can be quietly swept under the rug and forgotten. until that night you're laying in bed with just your thoughts and they hit you again..... hate those damn nights! -
the deep ocean, not shoreline, not 200 yards out in the carribean where you can see the bottom, but underwater, middle of the atlantic.....dark......stuff lives down there......the no breathing thing..... me no likey!!
also, once, when i was younger, i spent some serious time contemplating infinite existence (theological phase), the more i tried to wrap my head around it, the more it terrified me. i sincerely hope we blink out into nothingness at the end..... -
Quote:knowing them personally is completely different then being a fan of wrasslin'I know a lot of pro wrestlers.
It's really funny to be one of those lucky people who gets to hang out after the show and get to see the 'Evil Big Bad Dude" (ie, heels) selling Girl Scout Cookies for his little girl. And the face characters buying them.
http://nwaanarchy.net/ films just down the street from where I work, and they come in to my restaurant after every show.
as a matter of fact, an old old wrestler named Junk Yard Dog was a friend of a family member of mine. Met him twice, nicest damned guy you ever wanted to meet, but that still wasn't even close to enough to make me watch wrestling. -
this makes me happy.... if nothing else, hopefully it will accelerate the digital copies of the books being released. the second one still isn't out in nook format!!!

so, years ago (these "monuments" have been known about for quite awhile), the theory was that the features on these monuments were Caucasoid, and that it pointed to western european explorers visiting south america much sooner then previously thought. or that the south americans had encountered western europeans "somewhere". we make pretty hefty assumptions on our historical accuracy even in times when records were not kept, and we do not easily let them go (faster then light particles??? no wayz!!!!). it's quite possible that the cultures that excelled at exploring were doing it much sooner then assumed..... but that would mean someone would have to change a text book or two, and that's just too much work!

Quote:Because Blasters haven't been the 'King' of damage in a long time. We're the kings of ranged damage. With that range, sadly, being considered good enough defense to justify our squishiness.
I can take a War Mace/anything scrapper, right out of the box without enhancements, and do much more damage than any Blaster from level 1-26, while being much much safer doing so.
Blasters used to be the undisputed kings of damage but that title vanished years ago. It's high time we fixed that discrepancy.
this is why i can't play a blaster past level 10 or 12. granted i prefer an archetype that includes def/res, but if a blaster gets NO mitigation i think the damage discrepancy should be higher. i just don't feel like Blasters do enough to warrant their level of squishiness. -
wait.... those are account wide permanent unlocks?????????
color me freaken stupid for not checking on that........ :/ -
OP..... all i got to say is, you know WAYYYYYYY too much about wrasslin'

glad to hear "help" worked for you. i've always found it useful over the years i have been playing, always someone to throw out a useful bit of info when i get myself confused or whatever. but over the last 6 months or so, at least on Virtue, it has turned into prepubescent, angsty, chat channel of choice. with idiots blathering away about inane TV shows, arguing over comics lore, or just randomly trolling. i've frequently dropped my 2cents worth and said "hey, think maybe you could chat somewhere else? this channel is for folks who need to ask questions." to which they reply, "this conversation IS help" and reference a lame question posed 20 minutes ago, which somehow justifies the rampant troll chatting.
freaken annoying if you ask me, and anyone who is guilty of using "help" as a personal chat channel should be very ashamed of themselves, you know you are wrong, you know you are annoying, but you know you are safe behind the anonymity of the interwebz.... -
Quote:There are more of them.
A pessimist would say it's more likely to increase the dumbed-downness of our beloved comics. Actually, a real pessimist would glance meaningfully at the New 52 and say that's already happened.
the "dumbed-downess" is completely subjective, and the complaints from "our kind" were quite common as long as i have been reading comics, i don't think "the masses" paying more attention to them will change anything other than the profits.
remember the first horribly thought out retcon that offended you?... think about it, try to remember that far back... ding! there it is, you got it. now, is there any conceivable way that can be blamed on commercialism? sorry, no.
i know we all like to think of ourselves as a counter culture, niche market. but the reality is comics were always intended to be mass-market, they just became kind of "childish" in how they were viewed by the public at large. that's changing now, just like video games, as the generation that embraced them the most is older and refuses to give up their childhood loves. but with the general level of acceptance comes the mainstream effect, and those that wanted to identify with the counter culture, are now "offended" that "normals" like what they do. same thing happened in the early 90's when "alternative" music became mainstream. -

first, why do they have more buying power then us?
second, no we should not be worried, more exposure only increases the success of our beloved comics. -
Quote:SCORE! mad points for the classic FASERIP! (Class5000 btw, after unearthly it went to the Shift X, Y, and Z, then Class1000, 3000, 5000.... i was wayyyy too into that game apparently) Shaw was always my favorite mutant in all of marvel, i have a character that i have been remaking in every superhero rpg and video game i have ever played that is basically Shaw with a little more control over what he can do with the stored energy. but to the OP's question, any one outside of cosmic level would get stomped by shaw (muscle toons that is, psychics kick his butt) Thing, original Thor (not todays superman analog), Abomination, etc... the initial one "super duper punch" approach would have been an interesting subplot to try out.Beta Ray Bill and Captain America have also lifted Thor's hammer. It's not whether you're strong enough, it's whether you're worthy. I expect Cap will get a chance to pick it up in the Avengers movie. They've set everything up in the movies for that kind of scene.
As for Sebastian Shaw, I remember his stats in the old Marvel Universe pen and paper RPG game. That game rocked, although it was unbalanced as hell.
Shaw had a type of absorption power that allowed him to heal damage up to its power level, which I think was Unearthly (100). So if you hit him with 100 points of damage or less, it just healed him. If you hit him with 120 points of damage, he'd take 20 and heal 100, effectively healing for 80. You had to do 200 points of straight physical damage before you started hurting him. This is more than most people were able to do -- Spider man's strength was only Incredible (40), for example.
The Hulk started at Unearthly (100), and when he got mad it progressed in stages up to 5000 (I forget the power level name).
So yeah, the Hulk would take a few shots that Shaw would laugh off, and then when Big Green started getting mad Shaw would start to feel it. If the fight continued Shaw would end up as a smear on the ground. (If, that is, the Hulk killed people, which he does not. 'Worthy', remember?)
I had a character in the Marvel game that had Shaw's absorption power at Amazing (50) level, except my power fed into strength instead of health. I got into a fight with Rhino -- he hit me a few times which charged me up, then I knocked him across Manhattan with a single blow. God, I loved that game system. -
Quote:ok, not that it pertains to the game at all, but your response (and those like it) are quite obviously not familiar with the concept of software testing. you DON't make changes to a tested and tweaked piece of software BETWEEN testing and release... it renders the testing moot. why is this a hard concept for folks to grasp? now, as to whether or not the OP deserves a refund is debatable, but his logical process for being upset is sound.Allowing people to try RELEASED versions of things before you buy them is one idea I'm not particularly opposed to.
But having the expectation that anything under beta test will exist in the live environment in EXACTLY the same shape or form as it did during beta is borderline naive and foolish. If anyone attempts to ask for a refund for something because "it doesn't work in live the same way it did in beta" then I can only hope, for their sake, that the customer service people don't laugh -too- hard at them for trying. -
Quote:An in-universe character can misuse and abuse words all she likes, within her own dialogue. It's out-of-universe text that must conform to standard use.
For instance, if Praetorian Penelope Yin asks your character, in-universe, if one of his powers is Super Hopping, that's OK. If the game interface, which is out-of-universe, lists your power as Super Hopping, well, now we have a problem. One is a slightly cuckoo character speaking in-universe to your character. The other is the devs speaking directly to you, the player.
sorry, i disagree, the fact that we have all chosen this game is an unspoken contract to suspend reality in regards to this game... not only while logged in.
ever seen the movie independence day? one part bugged the living **** out of me. Randy Quaid starts the movie saying he was abducted by aliens, and everyone thinks he's a drunken loon. aliens show up, giant ships cover every major city, humans face possible extinction, and they still think he's a loon for thinking he was abducted... at some point, you just gotta go with it. -
so.... in a VIDEO GAME, where you pretend to be a SUPERHERO, fly/super speed/teleport around a city full of energy barrier war walls due to the INTER-DIMENSIONAL ALIENS invasion, where it is quite common to be wearing your underwear on the outside of your spandex... you have a problem with the usage of venom/poison/toxin?
really? -

Quote:If you were going to make one character and only one character to do everything you could possibly want to do in the game (Farm, SF/TF, missions, etc)
What archtype and powersets would you choose and why?
I would go with an Elec armor tanker and then Kin Melee
Why.. Elec armor is very tough verses normal content as you can high resistances verses s/l e and psi damage as well as moderate resists to Neg, Fire, and Ice. Much of the TF content hero side especially in the lower levels deals with s/l and e foes. Capping your energy resistance very early in your career is a huge boon of elec armor. Elec armor actually gets stronger in the later game... you'll laugh at malta sappers trying to drain you, be able to engage rularuu fairly easily, and carnies won't be much of a threat to you.
Elec does have a hole to toxic damage.. but unlike other sets Elec armor can plug its own hole using its tier 9 power which will also end up capping all but psi resistances. It makes for a very powerful set overall and one of my favorites.
Why Kin Melee... Kin does -damage which stacks nicely with the high resistances of elec armor. The combo goes as well together as Super Reflexes and Dark does. It also offers a nice mix of single target, aoe and ranged attacks and has a good damage boosting mechanic that I like better then build up, but not as much as rage. I just love the -damage aspect though and you really notice when you are focusing on a single target, and you have burst helping you with your aoe targets.
Why a Tanker and not a Brute? I'm a turtle sort of player so I like the higher base resistances that tankers offers verses the damage potential that a brute offers.
Teaming: I like Elec/Kin for teaming because no matter what sort of buffs and debuffs you add to elec armor it just gets better. The only thing you will have capped is elec resistance.. so you have room to be enhanced via a sonic or thermals... you have good end recover but its typically done via bursts of recovery and reduction of end costs rather then typically boosting the end recovery rate itself. +def and -acc powers are very useful and will greatly improve your durability. +recharge is nice for energize and powersink to bring them up faster. -damage stacks well with resistances and your kin melee effects. You are really good solo but get so much better teaming that its crazy good.
Final thoughts: I really like my elec/kin and soon to be artic epic tanker so far and would highly recommend it if you were only going for a single character to play as its just a good all around character and tanks are just really fun to play. I'd say that elec armor is one of the best all around sets in the game and you won't go wrong with choosing it.
from someone who ran a KM/Elec brute up to 50 (fixing my altitis in one fell swoop btw), i must admit to the great pairing of these two sets, though i personally prefer the brute, as the damage to res ratio is (i believe) more favorable for the brute. at least it played that way for me, but i don't crunch numbers in my hobbies, so i don't care if it ain't so. but i am not sure i would go with this pairing over my new SS/elec brute, apparently it's all that and a bag of chips, so say the masses. i know it's rougher on end usage thru level 34 then KM was, but not unmanageable. -
Quote:Oh, and why I came here in the first place:
Some of the costume contests are fairly self-explanatory, but could we just get a bit more explanation on them? I'm mostly looking for "Famous Historical People - with a Twist." Is that only real-life historical figures, such as Houdini, Stalin, Joan of Arc, or would it include fictional ones such as MacBeth, Odin, Perseus, etc? I know you probably don't want anything that already holds a copyright, but what about public domain stuff? Also, I'm guessing that the "twist" is up to the creator, and not set by the devs?
why would you even care????
Oedipus Tex wins this contest..... period, no questions asked. -
Quote:Filming Run: Any mission, TF, etc., that D_R needs to record for a video, expected to take three times as long as normal, while people wait as she oohs, ahhs, and films stuff.
No Respect for the Arts: While filming in open-game, someone blatantly does something D_R has asked people not to do (roam in and out of shot, use costume codes that break demofiles, etc)
Pocket D Cattle Call: D_R needs costumes for her newest vid, so everyone heads to Pocket D so she can judge.
Mission Intermission: When cutscenes play. Also known as 'Cinematic Bio Break.'
Breaking Into Film: Positioning your character so that when a cutscene starts, you're in it.
Rifftraxing: Spamming keybinds so your dialogue appears during cutscenes.
City of PowerPoint: When lag becomes so great that all you see are screenshots.

BZZZZZZZTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!! (that there is a buzzer sound.... a bad buzzer sound)
D_R gets her OWN lexicon, do NOT mix it with ours please. we all love what you do, but we don't really care what you call it while you are doing it

i am a mostly solo player, who used to have altitis, and never got anyone above 25 for the first year or two i played. i finally got a rhythm going with my last toon that made hitting 50 feel so easy i was dumbfounded. hit level 20, got to talos (mind you this is a hero side method, haven't done a vill side yet), hit the default arc so you get your tips, run your 5 tips a day (i generally played every 2 or 3 days so i always had some patrol xp), and hit the WST, and make sure you hit your favorite story arcs, for me that varies by what "kind" of toon it is, but stuff like Croatoa and a quick trip to dark astoria are always on my list. between those 3 targets, i found i barely got all the arcs in that i wanted to do by the time i hit 50. i also made sure to get all the phalanx TF's done for the accolade, and all the badges and whatnot for for the other health/end accolades. actually was putting off psynapse tf for as long as i could but had to do it eventually before i got to 50 (stupid personal rules and all).
i find if you play while watching your xp bar, it behaves like a watched pot... never boils. if you set specific goals per play session, damned xp just creeps up on you, i swear. -

modern combat armor is NOT discernible as armor, at least from an ancient roman's point of view. looks like a bulky jacket, hell WWI soldiers wouldn't know that it was armor.
