Quote:I know the card isn't new however it has played fine with the settings it has on now. In fact, I had water and reflections up higher as well and except for minor lag once in a blue moon, it played fine.Try setting Ambient Occlusion to OFF. That old of a card isn't likely to handle the AO settings very well.
Also, there are a LOT of unneeded programs running at startup (see the O4 section) that don't need to be running all the time using up precious memory and processes. For an older machine with limited memory such as yours, it's best to run as lean as possible when gaming.
Are you running the game through Steam? Or do you have it tied to Steam to show your status in the game? If so, try shutting off Steam and run it without it to see if it makes a difference.
EDIT: Afterthought time. I remember someone mentioning that turning off Chat Logging helped resolve their issues in situations that were AOE or PBAOE heavy. It seems that all of the extra text from the additional ticks of the AOE and PBAOE powers was spamming the chat logs causing them lag. Would be worth a try to see if it helps you.
I know there is a lot of start up programs but I'm not 100% sure what is or is not needed so I just leave it alone.
No to running through steam and it should be off when I am playing.
I'll try the chat log and see if that helps. -
I did that Tex. I saw the "Make the launcher less obtrusive" and did basically everything there. Can you think of anything else?
I was trying again last night and I noticed the Pings kept jumping. The game would use like 20-30% of the system's resources to jump to around 90% sometimes. I don't know if this is the reason as I haven't tried Apex with this on or any team really (I was soloing) but throwing it out there as I'd like to go back to doing TFs eventually. -

Ok, I've played CoH now for four years on the same tower. Yes, my tower is old (2005) however it's been going strong.... Until he CoH launcher got installed. It ran ok at first but then after joining an Apex team, everything went to hell.
Now I can't even play it anymore. I would move around and find a large group of baddies and then it hits. Everybody starts jumping/ teleporting around (Players included), Lag in activating my powers, I teleport to different areas, and hitting anything is impossible. At first, I tried to see if there was some problem I could fix with maybe a Virus scan or Deleting a large program I wasn't using to free memory but I have tried: AV scans (3 times, once on CoH's folder directly), Disk clean up, Registry Clean up, deleting until there is almost no games left on my comp, Defragmenting, rebooting, restore check points, and verifying files. I have no clue what the hell is wrong. So I'm turning to the CoH community in the know. Help please.

Quote:No, they stayed 100% heroJust to verify it, those toons didnt go Vigilante/Rogue after u earned the Merits?
Also u did it with a friend, was it ur mission or his?
Was the Merits shown in the special reward tab?
Did u play the toon meantime and what did u do with him?
U sure ur Account Name and password is safe and no one else has access to it?
Also was there server maintenance in the time between, we had some problems with deleted Mails and such.....
My mission, he didn't have the mission.
Yes, got the "Hero merit rewarded" Announcement and I got the merit. I saw it on the salvage screen under special.
Did not play the toon, it stayed in the same location
To my knowledge, my account is still safe. If it was hacked, the toon had almost a billion INF on it, I would expect the thief to clean me out. Still I won't know til someone from NC checks the account's records.
Finally I don't remember if there was any maintenance. I don't believe so. Was there one over the last 7 days? -
About a week ago, I played one of my toons, got a merit and logged her off. When I came back to her a couple of days later, her merit had disappeared. I figured I had logged on at some point and maybe spent it although I couldn't figure on what so I wrote it off in my mind.
Now I was playing another one of my toons 2-3 days ago and I KNOW I had gotten the merit cause I had done it with a friend. I KNOW I didn't spend the merit because I wanted 2 recipes and I was trying to decide on which one I wanted and which I could by from the market. That merit also disappeared.
Has anyone else noticed this or had it happen to them? -
51 mo vet here and I stay cause I love the game. Pure and simple. Before I had a computer, I wanted to play this. After I started, there was no turning back. Hell, I don't even watch regular TV anymore. The only problem I have with it is in Issue 19 and turning my 29 lvl 50s into Incarnates.
I am so hoping it's just a long story arc and not a TF for them as those tend to be cherry picked. (We don't need X archtype but we won't take anything less cause it's easier with X archtype) -
I tried the remove and reinstall and it didn't work. After this fix, I tried everything in CoH and it worked fine EXCEPT when I brought up the window that access the tailor screen. That froze me up. I ran the registry cleaner and now it works EXCEPT now when I quit to desktop, the game freezes. I have now stopped trying to fix it as this one little thing isn't so bad imo.
Through all this, I can't get the verifier to run but I can live with that.... until the next patch. -
Update: After posting this I was absolutely frustrated beyond belief. I decided to put everything back the way it was and call it a night. So I went back to the undo check point, opened the recycle bin and restored the CoH files deleted there. Then, after doing that and went to bed, I realized that might have been a bad idea.
So I loaded into CoH to see what the damage was and..... everything was working properly. The resolution was back to normal, I could log into bases, the updater didn't blow a gasket. In fact the only thing now that still doesn't work is I still can't verify my files at all. It crashes at the 625 mark. If anyone ha an fixes, I don't mind hearing them.
As for my Directx 10..... I've had no known problems with it. I've had it for 9 months now and everything runs smoother than when I had directx 9. With it, I can manage to run ultra settings for water and reflections with no problem. Shadows can be run on medium but sometimes get glitched when I enter my SG base and stuck on the shadows in there. But really, it's worthwhile imo. -

Switched threads as my problem has gotten worse:
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=241036 -
Okay, I have a problem that seems to be getting bigger. Here is the situation. When I logged on tonight, the updater wouldn't even run. It gave me a error message and died. So I ran the COH Collection from Going Rogue again with the thought process that it would fix whatever was damaged. Well it did which allowed me to get into the game.
However, when I tried to access my SG base, the game stopped like 1 / 10th of the load in and stayed there... no time out, no crash, no return to log in. I even waited 30 mins and nothing. So I posted it up for help.
Then I started to scroll through the forums to see if anyone else was having the same issue (Previously not being able to get into base), I came across this thread:
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=235723
Figuring that maybe the fix I did was incorrect, I tried this one. Now I can't run the file verifier (Crashes with an error about 625 Gs in), I still can't get into bases, loading out of say Atlas city hall into Atlas park takes about a minute and a half (Never did before), and Finally I am stuck in perma safe mode as I can't even open the graphics window without getting locked up. I can open the options but as soon as I try to switch tabs, it locks up.
Now this is aggravating as hell. I never had any problems before like this. The only thing I can think of is that recent Patch. Anyone have any fixes on this? -
Yes, figured the obvious of the rent. It's paid in full.
BUT it doesn't do anything. It starts to load the base then completely dies. Doesn't crash, doesn't return to log in, doesn't do anything but sit there. I walked out of the room and returned 30 minutes later and it's STILL there. -
Ok, so I came on tonight and the updater wouldn't run. As soon as it got started, it crashed. Test worked and I could get to the test server but live was out. So I tried to re install the game again into the same file to have it fix whatever was wrong. Well it had quite a bit to fix.
After it fixed the sound files (Which seemed the only thing wrong) I loaded into the game with success. However, I can go anywhere through train or ferry or whatever BUT I can't access my SG base. The bar fills a fourth of the way and then CoH stops communicating with my PC as the Task manager says there is no response.
So anything I can try to get back into my SG? -
I have been thinking of purchasing a gaming mouse for awhile and was wondering if anyone could suggest any? Never had one before (Just a regular mouse) so I'm not sure what would be the best one for CoX. Thanks for any suggestions.
-
Actually the card has been working fine. The freezing never happens around water. The only real problem area I have is Chimeora and I can lower my shadows setting to play fine there.
There is no one location it only happens in. It's happened in Talos, RWZ, and Atlas once or twice. It has also happened in Praetoria but not so much.
Have not tried to update the driver yet. Working on it now.
How do you check to see if I am trying to run dual monitors? -

I have recently developed a problem since the last CoX patch was released. Whenever I open a contact window or any window for that matter, the game would sometimes freeze up on me. I wait but it never restarts and finally I have to end the program and restart it.
I thought maybe it was a problem with the file so I tried to verify it however at the 500-600M mark, it completely dies. I tried to recover to a previously created checkpoint in Aug 10th but the problem still persists. Any help?

yes I realize it's more than once per mob.
And IF I was running a good build, then I probably would fight bigger mobs. Although, IF I was running a good build, then I wouldn't be on here looking to improve it. lol
(And I made a mistake, it's 32% melee)
Anyway, I played the current build last night and remembered why I hated it. This is what I'm going to try unless there are any other suggestions:

Insane damage with hero stats? If you were surrounded by say 10 spawn and it does 25 points per sec, that would be 250 points. Sure. But it's spread out among the mob and at 25 points per spawn, I just can't see it. I'll have to run my scrapper into a few more mishes and see if maybe it's me but I doubt it isn't.
I could see the value in BIG mobs. But when you're facing 1-2 man spawn, it's a lot more lackluster. Again, If I am killing a guy in 3 hits, I can't see how that extra 25 points really help.
As for the 35% Melee, when I run into a mob, the first thing they do is fire their ranged and, in some cases, fire them multiple times. The range usually damages me enough to just about take me down as I don't resist them much. 35% melee helps but I think my HPs are too low to notice.
When I made that posted build, I was aiming for high HPs, Recharge, and healing in that order. I have considered Shadowmeld as with it and a defense slotting build, it might work for me. -
Thank you guys for the help!! Last time I posted the build I got ONE response This helps a bit.
Quote:I know. I usually aim for 5 attacks. This seemed like overkill to me too (Part of why I posted it) But storm kick, Cobra strike, and dragon's tail seem to be staples. Crippling Axe just got buffed and I've heard good things about it. Burn is the same. And Air Superiority was just another damage mitigation attack. I took it mostly for exempting when my shields really aren't that good.Hmmm.
Not terrible. As written, this would play just fine.
That said, I might tweak things just a smidge.
You have seven attacks and four click buffs. Really?
Storm Kick, Cobra Strike, Crippling Axe Kick, Dragon's Tail, Eagle Claw, Air Superiority, and Burn.
Focus Chi, Healing Flames, Consume, Fiery Embrace.
Not to mention Rise of the Phoenix.
That is one busy toon.
Quote:However, I would recommend dropping Eagle Claw, Focus Chi, Rise of the Phoenix, Air Superiority(you don't need the extra knockdown), and Fly.
Instead take Combat Jumping, Hurdle, Blazing Aura, Super Jump and Weave.
I have to admit, I wouldn't drop Focus Chi. Again, I exempt ALOT so that extra Damage Buff is real nice at low levels. Especially for hurdle as I'm not a hurdle fan. The only time I take it is when I take Super Speed as my travel of choice.
Rise is easily replaced. It was taken out of "Just cause" reasons.
Why drop Eagle's Claw? I don't understand that move. Same with taking Blaze Aura. I have it on my build now and it's not that amazing to me. Am I missing something? It's six slotted with oblivion and seems to do mediocre damage at best. (Like 17-25 points) What do you guys slot it with?
Quote:Reshuffle slots so all your attacks have six slots, and put a full set of Obliterations in Dragon Tail and Burn, both. Pick three of your single-target attacks and put in full sets of Touch of Death. These are not terribly expensive and will add 17.75 percent melee defense, which will cut the damage you take by 25 percent or more. I'd also swap the titanium's for aegis's, and then concentrate on fighting fire enemies.
Quote:Combat Jumping and Weave get as many LotG's as you can fit, up until four in each, be sure to get the recharges.
For consume, I'd recommend three Efficacy's and three Obi's, drop the damage procs and go for rech, acc, end mod, and anything else you can squeeze in. You want that up a LOT, especially if you are trying to actually run focused accuracy. You WILL be running Blazing Aura, it should be the first thing you turn on every time you play.
Quote:With the above changes, you'll have enough melee defense to actually notice it helping you, much more of every other defense, and enough more recharge that you'll be seeing healing flames up quite a bit more.
Martial arts does plenty of mitigation, combined with this build and the crazy damage of fire, this toon will be remarkably effective.
Also I had talked with some MA/ people (Before the buffs, mind you) who usually only ran 4 attacks. Those were storm, crane (Might be Cobra now), dragon, and eagle. They also suggested running with Assault as it made a difference. I haven't tried that yet but I could see, if I stayed def orientated, grabbing maybe maneuvers and vengeance as well.
Again, thanks for all the opinions so far. I look forward on your thoughts on all this.
Afterthought: Also thinking about it, Eagle's Claw now boosts the damage of the next move done after it by 33%. Why WOULDN'T you want it? I must be in Sparta cause the madness is overwhelming. lol ;P -
Okay I've made some changes to the build. Looking to see if I need to make any more before I respec. Can anyone see anything I might have missed? The couple of them I got last time I think really helped.

Usually I'm solo. With it being a defender though, he'll probably be ending up teaming more often than not.

I was thinking of making a sonic praetorian defender but I haven't decided on his secondary. I know /sonic is the best out there but how about Assault rifle or Dual Pistols? Could either of these work? I like the idea of an Assault Rifle toon as I don't own one yet but then with piercing rounds (-resist to up to 3 targets) and the ability to change my effects via change ammo, maybe that wouldn't be a bad secondary. Any thoughts?
