Thinking of making a Sonic/ and ?
I have an Archery/Sonic Corruptor and am quite happy with him. Find a secondary that you like as Sonic is a pretty easy to set and go support set. You'll find yourself with lots of blasting time. As for this, that's why I'd consider a weapon set as a viable option for those redraw haters.
AR can be probably just as successful as my Archery blast.

Sonic Resonance suffers from not being able to protect yourself too well. (24% resistance slotted will help, but not much).
Assault Rifle will draw quite a bit of aggro with all those AoEs, but then again youve got Buckshot and M30 Grenade to keep the enemies down when they do turn your way.
Are you planning to mostly team or solo, or a bit of both?
Usually I'm solo. With it being a defender though, he'll probably be ending up teaming more often than not.

I personally run Sonic/Electric. The hold is nice and I constantly work with other controllers/doms/etc... to stack hold bosses. I also like the fire and forget pet and the end drain is useful as well. That said, I definitely feel that damage is a bit lacking and overall I could have picked a better set, but I enjoy it.
I have to agree with the above poster that the aggro from your AoE skills might hurt as Assault Rifle. Even with Short Circuit being my only AoE, I tend to draw unwanted aggro from it, which sucks when you are the only one without 3 shields.
Dual Pistols intrigues me with Sonic because I believe there is a Swap Ammo which reduces the enemy's damage they deal? I might be incorrect here as I haven't played DP, but if that's the case, it seems nice to reduce the damage they deal in addition to providing a team with shields to reduce damage taken.
The only major problem with soloing with a Sonic Defender is that 5 of Sonic's powers are ally centered. Since Sparky can't be targeted, there's no great solo synergy instantly. Your solo build might consider PPPs so you have a pet to use disruption field, etc on. That being said, the AI usually never does what you want it to.
I tried it once, but for one reason or another ended up deleting it, which is Sonic/Dark. You get Dark Pit as an opener, and several -to-hit debuff cones and a self heal. That way you'll have the resistance from your big bubble, including some mez protection, and you'll have some enemies whiffing because of your attacking them.

I personally have a Sonic/Dark at 43 atm. Its not a great combo but not a bad combo. Its lends a little to your own defense and alot to the defense of others. The way I look at it is that the more to-hit debuff your throwing around the less your getting hit and the less your team is getting hit. However, when they do get hit your powers will already be there to soften the blow. Its nice because you get the self heal and the two cones. The only bad part I have atm is end reduction. You need to slot for that or you will be a end junky even with stamina. Especially if your like me and your crazy and run tough and weave XD

I have a Dark Blast/Sonic Resonance Corruptor in his mid 40s. This is pretty much the reverse of a Sonic/Dark Defender. I've primarily soloed on him, and Dark Blast is what allows me to do so. With Sonic Res having just 4 solo-usable powers (Sonic Siphon, Sonic Cage, Sonic Dispersion, and Liquefy), Dark Blast provides the extra mitigation that I need. Dark Blast provides tohit debuffs (especially nice in the cone attacks) that really make a difference. Dark Blast also offers a nice (though weak) self-heal in your third blast. Torrent has a useful knockback, and finally, as mentioned above, Dark Pit offers a minion stun. I've not taken those last 2 powers and still been able solo.
/ice will also be a rather good option. It might be my current default pick for a defender.
Here's an odd build I just came up with for a Sonic/Ice Tank Mage:
He has capped smash/lethal resistance, 41.1 defense to range, mez resistance, and significant resistance and defense to all other types.
He can destroy large spawns with Liquefy + Ice Storm + Blizzard. God help any mobs that have been herded by a tank if you hit Soul Drain and Aim before that combo.
He has three single target holds and liquefy for an impressive Mag 9 sustained hold with 3 chances to get an extra +2 mag from lockdown. His three single target attacks are fast to animate and make an easy chain.
If you switch combat jump and SJ for hover and fly I think you could solo some AVs with this. But this is a solo build. It has none of the ally shields.

Overlord of Dream Team and Nightmare Squad
I was thinking of making a sonic praetorian defender but I haven't decided on his secondary. I know /sonic is the best out there but how about Assault rifle or Dual Pistols? Could either of these work? I like the idea of an Assault Rifle toon as I don't own one yet but then with piercing rounds (-resist to up to 3 targets) and the ability to change my effects via change ammo, maybe that wouldn't be a bad secondary. Any thoughts?
