I am looking to upgrade my rig a bit, and the first thing I am looking to change is the video card. Here is my current setup:
EVGA GTX260 896MB
Intel Q6600 @ 2.8
4GB Patriot DDR3 RAM
EVGA nForce 780i SLI Motherboard
Zalman 850 watt SLI power supply
500GB 7200 RPM HDD
My goal is to try to purchase a new video card to achieve as close to maxed settings as possible in Ultra mode, without breaking the bank. I am considering purchasing another GTX260 and using an SLI configuration. I have also considered selling my GTX260 (someone has offered me $80 for it) and purchasing a new bigger single card solution, or purchasing 2 gtx460s that I can get for ~$225 total.
So what would my best solution be for increasing my ultra mode settings as much as possible for say, just over $200? Would I be better suited for an ATI 5xxx or 6xxx series or a new GTX card, or is a GTX260 addition for SLI my best option? Thanks! -
-
**bump** anyone have any input on my last Q?
Thanks! -
GTX 580s in SLI had better max out this game, lol. I'm jealous.
Congrats on the rig though!
Thanks for the response. Hopefully we will get some more input on this so that we can see exactly what it takes to do this. Keep it coming folks. -
I am running 1920x1080 and get 30+ fps with Ultra Mode set to medium on almost everything. I am in a similar situation as every other game I run I just slide every video setting to the right and run with it. This is the only game that I can't just set everything to "MAX" and play at decent framerates. I worry though that even if I buy a 6950 or equivalent NVidia card I will still have problems because like you said it seems the game just isn't optimized to run all settings at maximum on ANY system.
Thanks for the input, it's good to see that another 260 should help me out. The last time I was considering this, this game had virtually no support for SLI.
I guess my last question is will a 6950 be able to handle 30+ fps on 1920x1080 with all settings turned up to "11"? If so I might consider a full upgrade. -
I currently have a GTX260 working with a q6600 and 4gb of Patriot Extreme RAM. I am looking into getting something to get Ultra Mode close to max, or as close to possible without breaking the bank (as in not a $300+ card). Would it be more beneficial for me to get another 260 and run it in SLI, or look into a new card?
Also, is it possible with the CPU and RAM that I have to max out ultra mode? If so, what card is necessary? Please don't waste my time by saying "get 3 GTX580s and triSLI them". I am still on a budget and am really looking for bang for the buck. Can my setup max UM with something less than a 6950?
Thanks. -
*bump*
Really no one else is maxing out these settings yet? I'm curious as to what it takes. It seems like ultra mode settings are just too ridiculous to run at full fps. Honestly I find it a bit frustrating that someone can't spend $1,000 on a PC and max all of the settings. Let us know if you are able to max! -
*Bump*
Just wanted to keep this updated and see if anything has changed for anyone. I'd like for this to be a good thread for people looking to see what is necessary to max out Ultra Mode, and to see what various combinations of hardware will perform the task.
So, once again who has Ultra Mode maxed? (say 30+ fps)
Please list your hardware specs and resolution. Thanks! -
An Ice/Rad controller would make a pretty useful "no damage" toon. You still get 2 good debuff sets, and only HAVE to take one that does any damage. I don't think many teams would turn down an ice rad, even if they dont do any damage.
OR you could just take a regen stalker and no attacks but the first, (maybe every travel pool), then join a bunch of teams and let them PL u to 50. :P -
what about using it to go up against an AV? It seems like this would be a great way to add some defense on AVs.
-
I have been looking at rebuilding my kat/regen to include shadow meld. Whats the word on this power? Anyone have any experience with this build? Do you have a Mid's build that includes it? Thanks.
-
Bump. Anyone have any input? I would appreciate it.
-
Great info so far. Let's keep it coming. It's nice seeing the results people are getting with different hardware. Personally I am running a GTX 260, 4GB ram and q6600 oc'd to 3.2ghz.
I used to come to near max settings, but I just bought dual 23" LCDs and had to drop some effects to keep decent frames. I am also looking for some advice on my setup as to whether I should buy another 260 and run SLI. If you can give input on that I'd appreciate it. That thread is here:
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=240740 -
Who has maxed Ultra Mode, and what are you using to do it? I have been looking for a thread showing exactly what it takes to run Ultra Mode at max settings and keep a decent frame rate.
Lets say for the sake of the thread "decent frame rate" is minimum 30+ fps.
So tell us if you have it maxed, and what your build includes (GPU, CPU, RAM, MOBO) also be sure to mention what resolution you are running.
Thanks! -
Quote:This is what I had thought also. So what's the recommendation, get the GTX 260, install the SLI driver and max it, or don't bother? If I knew for sure I could max ultra mode at my resolution, I would pull the trigger without hesitation.Somewhere along my CoH Boards help travels I was given this Hierarchy of video cards at Toms Hardware, it puts the GTX 260 in the same comparison-tier as the GTX 460, which in my thread they suggested I setup 2 of with SLI and would be able to max Ultramode at your exact resolution of 1920x1080.
So according to that hierarchy chart and the members here if you are comfortable installing the simple driver to allow CoH to use SLI you should be able to get Max Ultra Mode settings at 1920x1080 like you want with this card you found.
If I missed something or a speed or quality of something is different making me wrong I'm sure someone who participated in that conversation in my thread will swoop in and correct me lol. -
Alot of the talk about corruptors has gotten me interested in playing an ice/kin corr. I don't know why but for some reason I always default to blue side. (perhaps because I have minimal experience compared to blue)
So it seems that the power IS still blizzard, yet it is on a corr, not a def or blaster? Logically it makes sense. Hmm, and I have just been thinking about which chars to roll redside. This may be a fun option. -
I have a RL friend who forgot my birthday this year, and didnt realize it until now (it was in Feb.) We both play CoH and he has pretty much every type of toon one could ask for. Because he feels bad, he said he will "help" any of my toons get to 50, even from lvl 1. (I think we all know what he means, but whatever.) I need help deciding which character to create.
I am thinking of getting a character that can farm easily and really just overpower mobs, and I am not sure what would be the best bet. I am also thinking I am going to make it a villain, as I already have a "decent" farmer on hero side, and I have nothing above lvl 20 redside, although I always want to participate in SFs, etc.
So if you could use any AT and any powerset for farming and or destroying mobs quick, and maybe still having some utility in teams, SFs etc. (redside) what would it be?
And just for kicks if you have a blueside suggestion, feel free to let me know. Thanks. -
Quote:The thing is I have a chance to get this card for $75. I agree I would not pay any more than $100 for this one, but considering the opportunity, that's what makes this a tricky scenario.
Now, as to whether or not Multi-GPU is worth it largely depends on the game.
Is it worth it with the 2xx series of Nvidia GPU's? Oh hell no. Unless you are buying one of the heavily discounted BFG graphics cards a GTX 260 will generally start around the $200 mark.
The problem here is that the $200 price point will be getting you RadeonHD 5830's or Geforce GTX 460's... and either one of these cards in single-rendering modes have no problems blowing SLI'd GTX 260's, or single card 285's, out of the water.
So basically, to get an identical card to a GTX 260 you already bought, unless you bought a BFG, you'd be paying as much money as it would take for less performance than a brand new card.
So no, it's not worth it under any conditions.
After reading all of the thoughts however, I think I will probably end up holding off on this card, unless of course the price difference changes anyone's mind.
So, any last thoughts before I go ahead and NOT pull the trigger? A last piece of advice would confirm it for me. And thanks for all the input! -
Is this true? Can anyone confirm this for sure? If this is the case then I will probably just pass on it. I know a lot of charts and comparisons show 2 260s outperforming the 280 series cards and even competing with the 295 in some games. So will I see the large difference I am hoping for or should I just pass?
-
Just like the title says, I am looking into buying another GTX 260 core 216 to go with one I already have. What kind of performance increase can I expect with this addition? Can this setup run max ultra mode (or come close)? Thanks in advance.
I will mention as of now I get ~30fps on medium ultra mode settings.
Also using a core2quad q6600 at 3.2 ghz, and 4GB pc6400 RAM.
*EDIT*
I should also mention, I USED to be running this game on 1440x900 nearly maxed, but I just recently bought 2 new monitors. Now I am running at 1920x1080 and the same settings at that resolution drop me to less than 30 fps.
So my question remains, can gtx 260s in SLI max out, or come close to maxing out ultra mode at 1920x1080? I have a chance to get another 260 for about $75, and am wondering if I should pull the trigger, or buy some more months of CoH gametime instead. -
Now I am seeing the difference lies between our scenarios and not our math.
My answer was that a kinetic/ice defender's Blizzard does more damage than any other AT's single attack. This is because the defender has the benefit of fulcrum shift. So by himself the defender can boost his (or her) own damage and when they fire off blizzard, it will do more damage than any blaster can by themselves. Your math seems to be very rock solid, however I do not know of a way that a blaster can boost their own damage to fulcrum shift +damage numbers. Is there such a way, aside from chewing on a ton of red insps to get to the cap?
Your math does propose an interesting scenario in looking into the difference between a kin/ice defender, a fire/kin corruptor, and a ice/kin corruptor. I wonder which would have the highest damage power?
I must be missing something in Mid's because the numbers I am seeing still don't equate to inferno being above Blizzard in any situation.
So the results look like this:
-With no buffs blizzard's base damage outdamages inferno.
-With buffs and any other damage modifiers done "by the player to the player" (aka solo) not counting insps, an ICE/KIN DEFENDERS blizzard outdamages a fire blasters inferno, but a FIRE BLASTERS inferno outdamages an ICE BLASTERS blizzard.
-On teams where a fire blaster receives the same buffs as any other teammates, a fire blaster inferno beats both a ice/kin defender blizzard, and ice blaster blizzard.
Would you say the above statements are accurate? -
Quote:I hate to ... no, actually I love doing this. In my opinion, if you're going to be absolutely certain, its important to also be correct.
So lets get to it. Blizzard deals 75 ticks of 0.06 scale damage lethal and 0.06 scale damage cold over its 15 second lifetime. This is 75 pulses of attacks, not a 75 tick DoT (more on that later). Total damage is scale 9 damage. Its a pseudo-pet so it deals damage on the pet damage scale. That means at level fifty it deals 55.6102 * 9 = 500.49 points of damage.
Inferno deals Scale 1.0 smashing, plus Scale 2.0 fire, plus 75% chance for Scale 1.5 fire, plus another 50% chance for another Scale 1.5 fire. If all waves hit, Scale 6 damage (basically the same as Nova). *And* it also deals nine ticks of Scale 0.3 fire damage over eight seconds with 99% chance for each tick (and its coded cancel on miss). If *everything* hits, that's a total of Scale 8.7 damage (6 + 9*0.3).
But for Blasters that's on the blaster ranged scale which is higher than the pet scale. At level 50, that would be 62.5615 * 8.7 = 544.29 damage. Oops, looks like Inferno beats Blizzard and it deals that damage almost twice as fast to boot.
Of course, that's maximum damage. Neither power will hit all of its ticks all the time. The *average* damage depends on your accuracy. Important to note that the Blizzard pseudo pet damage power has standard accuracy (1.0) while Inferno has tier9-style accuracy (1.4 - just like Nova). But lets assume both powers are stuck at the tohit ceiling of 95% vs its targets. In that case the average damage of Blizzard is fairly easy to calculate: its just 95% of the total, or 0.95 * 500.49 = 475.47.
Inferno is a bit more complex because its waves have less than 100% chance to trigger, separate from the power actually hitting the target. The average of the base damage is 1.0 + 2.0 + 0.75 * 1.5 + 0.5 * 1.5 = 4.875 scale damage, or 304.99 damage at level 50. The DoT is slightly more complex because its a cancel on miss: if any tick fails all the other ticks fail also. That means the average number of ticks is 8.56, and the average damage from DoT is 8.56 * 0.3 * 62.5615 = 160.66. Total average damage: 465.65. With the 95% tohit ceiling that gets reduced to 442.37. So actually Blizzard does more on average.
But not so fast. Blizzard is a pseudopet, and thus has a 400% damage strength cap. Inferno is a direct attack, and thus has a 500% damage strength cap (by virtue of the Blaster having one). At the damage cap, Blizzard does 1901.88 damage on average, while Inferno does 2211.85 on average. Inferno deals more.
So, actually, you're wrong. Blaster Inferno's maximum base damage is higher than Blizzard's. And Blaster Inferno at the damage cap deals more damage than Blizzard at the damage cap for either the maximal case or the average case. Only if you compare Blizzard's average unbuffed base damage to Blaster Inferno's average unbuffed base damage does Blizzard outdamage Inferno. By 33.1 points of damage at level 50. Interesting final question: at what level of damage buff does Inferno overtake Blizzard on average damage? At 430% damage buff. What's the damage buff of a blaster slotted to the ED soft cap and with BU and Aim stacked onto Inferno? 357.5%. So at the point where the team has about 72.5% ally damage buffs floating around, Blaster Inferno will be able to exceed the damage Blizzard puts out assuming the targets remain under its area of effect for the full 15 seconds. Less if we assume Defiance is running some level of buff on the Blaster at that moment.
Not so simple, is it?
If this truly is the case, Mid's needs to make some edits. If you use Mids, which MOST people to do make their builds, it shows blizzard...every time. All the time. -
One would have to assume 100% accuracy to make accurate comparisons. So yes, assuming all ticks hit, blizzard. The OP's question is MUCH simpler than everyone is making it. What is the single most damaging attack? Look at the numbers and compare BASE DAMAGE. It's still Blizzard.
-
The thing is corrs, blasters and even doms are expected to put up huge damage numbers, when a defender is the highest damaging team member, it comes as a surprise to most. And even still, the numbers show a damage capped blizzard to be IT. The OP's question was when it comes to single most damaging power, regardless of what AT you are on, what is it? It's Blizzard.
-
The base numbers have blizzard higher than Inferno. So no matter what buffs you have, blizzard will be higher. If you use aim+BU on inferno, you can use aim+BU on blizzard. Basically it always breaks down to Blizzard>Inferno.
