GTX 260 SLI or new card?

I currently have a GTX260 working with a q6600 and 4gb of Patriot Extreme RAM. I am looking into getting something to get Ultra Mode close to max, or as close to possible without breaking the bank (as in not a $300+ card). Would it be more beneficial for me to get another 260 and run it in SLI, or look into a new card?

Also, is it possible with the CPU and RAM that I have to max out ultra mode? If so, what card is necessary? Please don't waste my time by saying "get 3 GTX580s and triSLI them". I am still on a budget and am really looking for bang for the buck. Can my setup max UM with something less than a 6950?

Thanks.

I'm running a GTX260, 4 gig ram on an E6320 and can set everything to max except Ambient Occlusion. Got that a couple notches down if I remember right.

Define 'max out'. What resolution and fps are you wanting to get? I run the above at 1280x1024 with between 15-30 fps, with drops down to below 10 during stuff like Hami and mothership raids.

Seeing how most of the performance of CoX does not seem to be tied to video card (ran "max" settings (pre-ultra)on my old 8600 GTX before it died with the above resolution and performance), a second 260 or even an upgrade wouldn't do a whole lot, maybe just let you run at a higher resolution.

Another 260 would be a great upgrade path if you're not looking to spend a lot of money.

Unfortunately trying to "max out" Ultra Mode is kind of a fool's errand. Not by any fault of your own, but mostly because the Ultra Mode graphics are so terribly optimized. This game will chug with my current mid-high UM settings, 4x AA, 16xAF @1920x1080 during certain circumstances. This is despite the fact that my computer can basically max out modern and vastly better looking/more complicated games like Battlefield Bad Company 2, Batman: AA, Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age. My theory is that it has something to do with the geometry in the game.

But back to your question, yeah, a second 260 would give you an appreciable boost in performance.

I am running 1920x1080 and get 30+ fps with Ultra Mode set to medium on almost everything. I am in a similar situation as every other game I run I just slide every video setting to the right and run with it. This is the only game that I can't just set everything to "MAX" and play at decent framerates. I worry though that even if I buy a 6950 or equivalent NVidia card I will still have problems because like you said it seems the game just isn't optimized to run all settings at maximum on ANY system.

Thanks for the input, it's good to see that another 260 should help me out. The last time I was considering this, this game had virtually no support for SLI.

I guess my last question is will a 6950 be able to handle 30+ fps on 1920x1080 with all settings turned up to "11"? If so I might consider a full upgrade.

Buy a gtx 480 atleast. With the 500 series out now I don't think I'd personally buy anything older.
