My only real experience with Aeon that I remember?
Fiteclubbing with him in Warburg. That was, of course, before he joined the staff.
I understand he ran with my brother more often, though. -
What NC would see is "Someone is using our IP. Distribution of a tabletop game set within our IP could hurt our future ability to sell products based on our IP."
Paragonwiki and the like are seen differently, as they are aids to using the IP in the form that NC can profit from. (Even so, all it takes is one harshly-worded letter, and the entire Paragon Wiki goes down.)
What you're doing here is offering a replacement.
It's a quite different thing.
Really, the best thing you could do to your project to keep it running would be to strip every last reference to City of Heroes out of it. Sure, you can still call your mechanics To Hit and Defense, those are generic. But every power and every archetype will have to be renamed, and all the villain groups scrapped and replaced.
Basically, even if you are not trying to profit from it, it could hurt NC's future sales. If they, miraculously, came out with a CoX tabletop game next year and tried to market it, its sales could be hurt because it would be competing with your system.
And, as far as the legal system is concerned, just because the IP holder isn't doing it now doesn't mean they won't in the future, so they have the absolute right to shut you down.
I am not a lawyer, your mileage may vary, et cetera. -
...shouldn't the headline be 'Effecting Change,' rather than 'Affecting Change?'
-
If you like a roguelike every now and again, I can recommend Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup. Delightfully balanced, with a good-sized but not overwhelming set of options.

Fparn.
Also, amusing. I would have loved to see Retro-Posi in game. -
Quote:Awesome. I am so there. What a freaking roller coaster for me this weekend. Yesterday's announcement here, but then tonight?
http://www.blackmesasource.com/
Black Mesa is FINALLY READY for release.
If you don't know, it's a fan-made mod bringing the entire Half Life original game into the new Source engine. All remade textures, maps, levels, voice acting, particle effects and the whole deal. It's been a labor of love for those folks, and it's finally about to pay off. It looks gorgeous, and I will definitely enjoy playing that right after I finish another run through the original HL.
The mod is FREE, and runs only with the existence of a source engine game on your Steam account, so if you've got that, play it. OMG I cannot wait.
That and Borderlands 2 but it's still 60 bucks, so...
Here's to hoping that they do Opposing Force someday, too. -
I'm starting work on a project, an epilogue of sorts for my characters, those of my wife, and KGB Special Section 8 as a whole. Wrapping up the loose ends.
If you ever had a character with a strong association with any of these, drop me a PM and I will do my best to include them if you would like.
Yes, it means I'll be writing a story - and I may be trying to turn it into a comic. -
If NCSoft were to even consider selling the IP, I can almost guarantee you that they would never sell it to Garriott.
-
You're tempting me to go over there, at least for a bit...
Polaron needs someone smarter than him around, after all, da? -
Here's hoping you land on your feet.
You made us a great game. -

I especially appreciate how much the devs have tried to please the players. I remember one regular Tank player whose name escapes me at the moment, but he was a fireman in real life and a strong advocate of the Battle Axe set. He was also one of the most helpful people on the Tank forum. As soon as customizable weapons were added to the game, one of the options was a Fire Axe. One of you guys came on the Forums and said that the Fire Axe was specifically designed for this one player. It was awesome and actually touching to see how much you respected and appreciated one of your players. -
I... don't know.
I never played any other MMOs, except a little bit of DDO when it went free. I did the beta for Champions, I guess, but I was unimpressed. My brother plays Champions - he was Hammer-Jack here.
I might do a trial of The Secret World, as a couple of people I know are there. I'll probably try TOR when it goes free.
But my computer is old and creaky. I don't know that it can hack those newer games.
I... don't want this game to go away. -
Quote:No, we didn't make it, but we came damn close.I started so early that I missed the MLTF. Hope you got the badge, Smersh - if not, we'll get you the Mo.
I'm feeling this tomorrow for sure, immunity to poisons or no.
It was Zwillinger drunkenly posting that he loved us all in the admin channel that did it - I stopped to type a comment on it while tanking Recluse, let my drunken attention wander for just a minute, and he got me.
So, yeah, my fault, but no worries. It's the closest I've ever come.
We may try again today.
It was wonderful - I had a chance to team with friends I haven't seen ingame in a long time.
And, yes, I'm slightly hung over this morning. Ah, well. -

Quote:That's okay, I think I may be responsible for the GDN.IOs.
Just after the infamous enhancement "diminishing returns" revamp, I PMed Statesman with an idea. I said how cool it would be for enhancements to have alternate effects: slot three accuracies and have a slight boost to your endurance rate, or gain some recharge for slotting damage reduction SOs.
Much to my surprise, Statesman responded!
"That sounds pretty cool", he said.
"I'll look into it."
My post was something along the lines of "I would gladly give up every bit of resistance in Unyielding for the ability to move while tanking."
They just did it in two stages: Stage One, you can move. Stage two, two issues later... -
Conceptual freedom.
In any other game, a dwarf fighter is a dwarf fighter - there's only so many possibilities.
Here, we take the a few Inv/Fire tanks, and we end up with, because of the amazing costume creator: a Soviet in power armor, a djinn, a dragon, a robot, and a catgirl.
And, aside from a few things like capes being locked at level 20, we could look and feel powerful, fulfill our vision of our characters right out of the gate. No wandering around in rags killing rats with a rusty dagger for us: we had shiny and colorful costumes out the gate that fit our visions of the characters.
That's huge, and the vast majority of other MMOs will simply never have it. -
Quote:That would, indeed, be Red-Eye who told you about the game. And, yes, he did play a communist-themed assault rifle blaster. Its been a long journey and I don't look forward to its end.
I know I don't post here often and most probably don't know me much at all but I have nothing but love for the virtue server and this game.
It all started freshman or sophomore year at CSUSB I was a eve player and had been since highschool. That all changed when during one of Professor Green's poly sci classes (God rest his soul) I started talking with a classmate about MMO's. He played COH and wanted to know about EVE and I wanted to know about COH. I don't even remember his real name I remember his in game name was red eye or something of the sort I think he was some communist assault rifle blaster (if i remember our conversation correctly) and he recommended virtue. So from there it started I bought a copy made a scrapper on virtue and fell in love I don't think I even ever ended up running into him in game to thank him for his advice. Soon after I fell off the eve wagon, but COH remained a constant up through my graduation in 2007. By that time I had run into the Zenvious foundation and those days will always be my fondest memories of the game. It wasn't meant to last though I decided I wanted to go serve my country and on July 20th 2007 I shipped off for army infantry training at Fort Benning Georgia for about 6 months I was without COH. After returning a lot of the old faces had gone and eventually the foundation itself disappeared I became a wandering vagabond after that never really setting roots in one place for two long except maybe the badgeing channels (Belle's Corner, Brickhouse, Virtue TF's and Virtue Badges im talking about you). The game was a constant in a otherwise changing life. 4 years went by and my Army time was up, I was a free man again and COH once again stayed a constant throughout police academy as I transitioned back to civilian life. Now I'm patrolling the streets as a probationary police officer and COH and the wonderful people I've met and played with over the years wont be there to be there as that unchanged constant and I feel somewhat empty to be honest.
God Bless you all and thank you for making this game one of the things I've enjoyed the most these past six or seven years.

Yeah, this is a bittersweet post, but it does have to be said: Thank you, Virtue.
I think it's appropriate to post a few memories of Virtue, and I'm going to indulge.
I remember starting the game shortly after launch. My gaming group had vaguely discussed City of Heroes at the gaming table; not a single one of us was actually going to play the thing. That's where KGB Special Section 8 got its genesis, actually.
I remember being given my copy of the game by another friend - his video card couldn't run the thing. I was going to play for the free month.
I'm still here. I never left.
I made my main character, Comrade Smersh, as my second character ever. He wasn't the second character on my account - I was sharing the account with my brother at the time. My first character was an MA/Regen scrapper, whose name is lost to the ages. I was level 3 or so, and saw someone standing under the statue of Atlas with a fire sword, and I had to have it. Hence, the Daring Armored Comrade Smersh, and his Linux-fueled Soviet powered armor suit.
I remember not being the actual founder of KGB Special Section 8 - that was actually Red-Eye. He got to level 10 before I did.
I remember the RP community, first starting out under the Statue of Atlas. That's when I met some great players - Capt. Valor, Dr. Trinity, White Geisha, and others, who I had some great times with.
I remember being the unofficial tank for Freedom Factor, and the great folks there - Dwarf Star, Red Robin, and others.
I remember Cog Sprocket. She was a good friend.
I remember playing King Jones when Issue 1 came out, and the dance party under Atlas crashed the Virtue server.
Mostly, I remember Gemini Park as it was, and KGB Special Section 8 as it was. We were once a top 50 supergroup, and we had some great members. Dueling Dervish. Lady Midday. Agent Ravage. Shae Firewarder. Red-Eye. Iron Joe. Soviet Shadow, my strong right arm, without whom it couldn't have been what it was. Mrwrk. Kohlstadt. Lunar Lass. Seigyoku. Soviet Omega.
I remember meeting some great folks IRL - Miss Independence, Vagabond Mage, Sayterra, Lyte, Shae Firewarder and her husband, Rowr, Lord Paladin and others. So many others. Hit People Guy. Kinsolving. Ascendant - I almost forgot meeting Ascendant.
I remember the fun that was my other supergroup I ran, the Guardians of Funk.
So many great times, so many great memories.
Heck, I even met my wife because of this game, at third hand - a friend of a friend of a friend I met playing this game.
Na zdorovie, to everyone I mentioned, and everyone I forgot to mention, and to everyone on Virtue. It's been a hell of a run.
