    .
But the problem with ED wasn't ED, but the rather presentation of ED, which was all Jack. ED itself was, and still is, fine and how the game should have been designed from the start.

    Thanks Sam! You're exactly right.

It's kinda like when my internet connection went from pay-by-minute to monthly subscription. It's just such a huge benefit when you don't have to worry about micromanaging your time or what you want to do in a game.

I don't want to know the Paragon Market exists. I don't want 'free' paragon points, because I don't want to be bothered by paragon points at all. But, as Sam said, with the concept of consumables, that ship has sailed and sunk by now.

I had no problem when CoH was a subscription-based game, that occasionally released costume packs. They were few and far in between, so it was quite simple to grab them all. New releases every Tuesday? Consumables? I feel stressed just thinking about it.

    I hate it.

Not that they are charging for powersets, that's fine. They can do what they want. But I loathe the hybrid subscription/microtransaction payment model. If there was a 30 bucks/month subscription you could get and never have to know there was a Paragon Market, I'd jump at the opportunity.

The tanker is the only AT of the four that is really unique. Try comparing its' primaries with the primaries of any other melee AT sometime. The result may surprise you!

I've been saying the same thing pretty much since Going Rogue. Among the four "fight stuff in melee" ATs, the scrapper is the only one that doesn't have a special shtick. That was fine when they only had to fight tankers for attention, but both (dare I say all) CoV ATs were designed to be more interesting than that.

In fact, the whole AT setup has needed a revision ever since Going Rogue. I mean, "Corruptor" sounds like "evil defender", it doesn't sound like a "super powered guy with ranged attacks and some support backup".

It should, but it turns out it isn't. The difference between a single player RPG and an MMORPG is the scope. Most single-player RPGs today, you can play through the story in a weekend. Maaaybe a week if it's really spectacular.

In comparison, I've played CoH for 8 years. You don't find that kind of content in a single-player RPG. Ya'll could be bots for all I care.

  12. I'm not really a fan of EB and/or AV fights in regular missions. In most cases fights like that are pretty binary: Either it's obvious from the start that you have no chance, or it's a trivial but probably loooong slogfest to beat down their health bar.

One example from the live game that I really did like, though, was the Civic Squad in CoV. I was always sorry that this kind of challenge wasn't used more often throughout the game. Basically, the Civic Squad aren't "cheaty EBs". They are 'just' bosses, and thus fairly manageable. However, how many of them that show up scales with your team size, and with a full Civic Squad reporting for duty, those fights could get really challenging, even for a team that worked well together.

The few missions the Civic Squad shows up in, always stood out to me, as interesting fights: 1) These are full fledged super heroes complete with powers, names and costumes. CoV always had a sore lack of this kind of enemy, so that helped them stand out. And 2) They are "just" bosses, which puts them more on par with most player characters. They don't win by boosting their health bar to ridiculous levels so they can expect to solo a full 8-man team. They bring their own 8-man team.

I'd like to see more along that vein.

Interesting, but I thought it was the exact opposite. That this was much more common in CoX than in other games. I mean, sometimes it feels like a full half of all CoV story arcs ends in an EB fight that you may or may not be able to solo (*mutters about stupid Positron dealing 500 damage per hit with friggin' neutrino bolt*).

Sure, we've had enough power creep over the years, that many of these fights are largely trivial today, but they were not designed or intended to be easily soloed. Don't get me started on Calystix the Shaper.

And this is not even counting the zone-wide story arcs that end in trials, like the Hollows, Croatoa and, as I understand it, even DA.
  14. C'mon guys, clearly the leprechaun is a preview of the upcomming size-changing powerset. You have to buy it to support development of this set!

    But probably not.

The original details about the dark powersets and the netherworld, seems to suggest that the designers were inspired by something similar to the negative energy plane in D&D. Or possibly the plane of shadow. However, I'm sure this inspiration has changed more than once over the course of the game's history.

It was vague, but I recall having seen much more specific references in recent years. Not sure where... perhaps regarding the new versions of Darkstar and/or Black Swan? Maybe?

I don't remember. I just vaguely recall going "Huh, that's not at all what I got from the Dark Melee/Armor description" at some point.

I just don't like dealing with the points and the store. They could give me $150 worth of points every month, and it'd still be horrible.

If there was a subscription (and really, I don't care how much that would cost) that just gave me access to everything (excluding consumables, I guess) without the free paragon points, that would be fantastic. I'd snatch that up in a heartbeat.

The current hybrid model is draining away my will to play. And this makes me a sad fallen jedi.

I've made it a point to stick with Stalkers ever since Castle made their original improvements, but I've always been too polite to say it in plain text - the AT was horrible, broken and gimped. Less so than other ATs, but gimped nonetheless. The best you could hope for was to have sub-par performance with much more effort and much more reliance on luck. The AT no longer sucks, and I honestly don't care what it turned into to get there. I wouldn't bat an eye if they turned Stalkers into Blasters if they played better.
And that's really the rub of it, isn't it. You don't think stalkers were fine, so they should be changed into blasters because you like blasters. Why not, you know, just go play a blaster?

This is pretty much the Dominator change discussion all over again.

I like scrappers quite a bit, so I'm quite sure I will like the new stalker. I loved the old stalker though. Will I love the new stalker? I haven't had the heart the try it out yet... maybe I'll give it a shot this weekend. Maybe.

I think the crux of the issue is that stalkers and scrappers are really designed, more so than any other ATs, to do the exact same thing. Now that you can roll both on either side, having both of them doesn't really make a lot of sense. However, I think it's the scrapper, not that stalker, that is the superfluous AT. Stalkers, brutes and tankers all have their individual approaches to the "Melee Combatant" role.

I've said it before I22, and I'll say it again: "Why would anyone ever roll a scrapper?" However, I'm not going to advocate turning scrappers into blasters or dropping the AT for something more interesting. I accept that people that aren't me still enjoy them.

On a slight tangent: It's well past time Stalkers got their grubby little mitts on Shield Defence! (and don't even try the "shields aren't very sneaky" excuse.)

I still think the market could bear a super hero MMO that 1) isn't CoH, and 2) is a good game. We're still waiting.

I'd even accept a super hero/fantasy hybrid, like Exalted.

My problem with the new system is that I don't like knowing there's stuff out there that I don't have. I want to have everything the game offers, but I'd have to sink a lot of money into the market, beyond my subscription, on a weekly basis to keep 'up to date'. This is nagging at me in the back of my mind, and it's an active stress factor for me. I don't play games like CoH to be stressed out, so the current hybrid model is actively reducing my enjoyment of the game because I can't just ignore it.

I don't want to quit CoH, but I think it's only a matter of time before the strain of the hybrid model reaches a point where it outweighs my loyalty to the game.

And I realize it's just me being weird, but hey. I can still sadface over it!
