All of those exceptions are ironically things I associate with the late silver age of comics, things like The Falcon, Rocket Racer, La Tarantula, etc. There were definitely some one off disco villains of the late 70's, bell bottomed V neck jumpsuits and all!

If we're talking strictly about super-hero costumes, as I see it there are 3 possible ways to expand on the category:

    A) revamped old school/spandex tights similar to the ones we already have (adding a few details like seams but still mostly plain)

    B) modern tights (w/ ribbing, surface texture(s), subdivided surfaces) a la Ultimates 1 or Marvel movies

    C) pieces we just haven't made before (e.g. domino mask)

What are you guys most interested in?
Your comment went up when I stepped away from the keyboard mid-draft of my first list of suggestions. Based on this, I'd agree with Golden Girl that B is quite covered at the moment. A combination of both A and C would be welcome.

Personally, considering that this is a superhero game first and foremost and since the sort of pieces we are talking about are more graphic in nature, I'd like to see at least two classic items folded into each set, whatever the theme. A facemask. A chest emblem. A new classic tights pattern.

For example: Chinese New Year could have a dragon tights pattern--not highly textured like anything we've gotten since the Stealth set through Olympian Guard. But a simple bold graphic tights pattern. Or a dragon eye mask or dragon brooch or something like that.

Another example: The Gunslinger set could have also included a full masks forehead detail that was a horseshoe. Two in fact: one right side up and one upside down. Or a simple belt--not a bullet belt--with a horseshoe on or crossed pistols on it. Again as per my prior post--symbolic logo like versions of these items, not a detailed piece with precise wear marks in the metal, etc.

A third example: With the coming space set, people had proposed a number of belts with a Saturn or atom or some sort of symbol on it. These assets could and should also be repurposed and relocated to the forehead. Maybe single shoulder or arm jewelry details (jewelry for all three body types!) as well. Or even use them as cape brooches. (Some of the original cape brooches, though VERY small, do a good job--saturn and stars in particular. And the new bat brooch was very welcome.) Additionally, I think a good simple bold tights pattern, similar to the radioactive one I point you to in my earlier post that bakes in some rocket or ringed planet logos and also has an accompanying cape would be very welcomed.

I think nibbling away at expanding the more adaptable (but SPECIFIC in symbolism, not GENERIC!) classic characters in tights options as you guys continue to do sets would be the best way to introduce new never been done bits.

Meanwhile, I personally think a revisiting of the old assets (patterns and white on skin issues in particular) and updating them to have crisper lines is kinda necessary at this point.

Lastly, I think some of the BASIC full body skins suggested in my prior post should be targeted for roll out in a 1/2 issue or spread over several issues and 1/2 issues. (uniform reflectance maps, uniform glow maps.) These are basic lego pieces that shouldn't take too many development hours but will be used as widely if not more so than some highly specific tailored pieces seen in the current trend in costume set design.
  3. Masks:
    • Eye mask details that update what we have in our current library under full masks. This category has not been added to or updated since initial launch nearly 8 years ago now. And all of these should have been made available for "with hair" options years ago.
    • Masks with white eyes as has been suggested above repeatedly.
    • Adaptable details like a tie for the back of the head (tied on mask is very Golden Age versus a blend pull over mask)
    • White. Something needs to be done about the white on masks for faces. It blends with skin as if it were a very thin white watercolor wash rather than opaque fabric.
    • Keep the "painted on" look available for face masks but if possible update many of the mask textures we have to add a simple bump map or shadow of a seam around the edges
    • Signature details and gimmicks (see category below for ideas) for foreheads and full masks--can be symbols or dimensional objects.
    • Take a good look again at the super science goggles, especially in a full mask setting. This is a good starting point. Could use a few goggles like this that color well to blend with full mask colors and carry even more eye shapes: Cat eyes, sneering eyes, dot eyes, etc.

    Tights:
    • Not painted on is good but as several posters above point out, just like the new tights you've included in i22, the cinematic textures--i.e. the scale or hightech weave fabric details all stray from classic comic looks. So just like the face masks getting help from a touch of texture just at the liminal edges where fabric then becomes skin, tights could use this minimal treatment.
    • SIMPLE base tights for below patterns that take advantage of new tech introduced since launch:
      • A base tights layer with a modest uniform glow to it using glow tech.
      • A base tights layer with a modest uniform reflectance map to it using that tech.
      • A base tights layer with a uniform reflectance map equal to that of the metallic skin.
    • Some more "with skin" options for lower body tights for men.
    • A female base skin with more defined musculature.
    • A "cotton" base layer. "Smooth" works okay for this now. But the softer texture may benefit people trying to capture this look.

    Patterns:
    • Some of these need to be uprezzed. Not changed. Just go back to the original art and get crisper lines. Many of the original tights patterns look like lo-res jpgs that got tripled in size and have all sorts of weird dithering artifacts.
    • Take a good look at the radioactive chest and upper leg patterns. This is perhaps one of THE most silver agey of all the patterns in game. It fits what I go into below about gimmicks. It has a baked in symbol. It is very graphic. The lines are crisp. The areas of color are large and blocky. Too many of the post i4 or so tights patterns have too many fine areas of detail to qualify as GA or SA.
    • Missing some basics like a good checker board pattern. Suits of cards patterns with some baked in symbols but room for a chest emblem. Question mark patterns.
    • From prior threads I know big graphic asymmetric patterns are out of the question. But the game could use 'em if it were possible.

    Boots and Gloves:
    • Taking a cue from above in case it is possible: a set of gloves and boots that are colored asymmetrically.
Edit to be clear: By this I mean left boot is color A while right boot is color B. Or a few very simple mirrored patterns such as the "fat stripe" pattern but inverted on each boot.
    • All the GA & SA type boots in game all date back to i0 (except the rubber boots and gloves from super science is adaptable at times). When you can, consider revisiting the boots and gloves with spikes, fins & folded. A geometry revamp (or new ones that fill some adjacent gaps designwise) of those with versions that are not overly textured would be appreciated IMO.

    Gimmicks and Signature Items:
    • Most GA and SA characters, SA in particular, are built around a schtick. We need more generalized items that can be turned into dimensional face masks, forehead details, shoulder baubles, chest details, emblems worked into full tights patterns, etc. These items should not try to look realistic but instead should have a gimmicky logo feel about them.
    • Some of these items we already have in one category or another, but I'm repeating things that could be made more symbolic where I think the in game ones try to convey a realism rather than a logo object. Try to think as each of these on a Venture Brothers hero or villain--pasted as an object to their forehead, turned into a uniquely shaped eye mask, neck brooch, etc.:
      • Dice
      • Dominos
      • Leaves (not like the ones we have but a stylized oak leaf or two around the eyes)
      • Heart
      • Cross
      • X
      • Question Mark
      • Smiley Face
      • Bomb with fuse
      • Fist
      • Atom
      • Spider
      • Beetle
      • Crab
      • Bat
      • Moon
      • Sun
      • Comet
      • Ringed Planet
      • Feathers
      • Horseshoe
      • 8-ball
      • Numbers
      • Infinity sign
      • Swirl

All of the above (and more) could then be blended with the existing (and forthcoming) more "realistic" and less stylized pieces from other sets to create a range of signature looks allowing for a range of various heroes and villains from all eras of superhero comics.
    • The suggestion above regarding all existing and future hats to have a no hair option allows any and all hat assets you make to do double duty as a hat and as a signature costume item. That pilgrim hat this past thanksgiving? Missed opportunity. With no hair for his, her and huge, anyone could have thrown that onto a plain-jane tights color combo and instantly they have a visual schtick with which to build a costumed character around.

Edit: Related to the final category of logo-like gimmicks and signature items: don't forget weapons sets when producing such assets. i.e. if you were to produce an big die that can go on the forehead, consider also putting a slightly larger version of that die at the end of a walking stick and giving it to mace sets or replacing the ball on the hilt of a blade with the die. Suddenly now you've opened up a range of new schticky classic comic book options for all "Lucky ______" characters.

Feh. That's what I get for cooking dinner and cleaning the kitchen. That'll learn me to step away from the forums.
  5. If you have VIP status and can see the i22 open beta forums, check em out. Something very cool that is not i22 (according to the preview publicized) got slipped in. I won't let the cat out of the bag for fear of getting dogged by Beastyle or some other mod on this, but if this was done deliberately to create some buzz amongst at least amongst VIPs, someone in Paragon marketing is an evil mastermind. I'd be lyin' if I said I don't wanna yap.

Yeah. I have fond memories of hanging out in DA. BP mask badges are going to become a bit more of a PITA to get now as we'll have to rely on Talos day and night cycles to bring them out if we don't get an echo.

Here's hoping that ALL of the new DA hasn't gone to the zerg. I have a soft spot for the BP's campy, totally un-PC, retro-horror comic book qualities.

And if a dev is reading: Pssst! Echo of old Faultline too if you can plz!

Second: As a heads up, while Imperial Dynasty is certainly inspired by the Chinese New Year, it will not be available by January 23rd, which is the start of the Chinese New Year (the earliest possible date it could be held actually). As much as we wanted to celebrate the arrival of the year of the Dragon with the costume set, our production schedule didn't quite line up with it.

That being said, you should be able to check it out on Beta Very Soon™.

Hope there is something small and dragon-y coming then. Even if it is a dragon related sale? Or a sale on the fireworks pack? (Already have it myself! But it would fit, right?)

To be fair, fashion is pretty hard to keep up with and history is geographic. This leaves the artists at Paragon making items for multiple markets. For better or worse, I'd guess they get more sales trailing rather than leading.

For what it's worth, you are correct that aspects of the jeans in this pack have already fallen out of style in some places. Embroidery and shiny denim have all but disappeared from the subway trains here. On the runways, at least for women, this year it was a lot of crops (high waters by a different name), high rises, often baggy and awkward up top tapering tight at the calf. But a few designers were pushing the highly exaggerated wide bell bottoms this year too. On the streets, I've seen a lot of the silly Barney Rubble fake fur vests. There are also a lot of billboards pushing moon boots over ducks (wellies are already out here but alot of people are still sporting ducks)--but I've honestly not seen one person wearing retro moon boots. Just billboards and subway ads. Marketing fail on that one.

I have some similar tastes regarding what pieces I prefer. But Magnolia, I urge you to try the belt as well. Switch it to "ice" as a subsetting and then play with colors. I've found it makes a very nice "magical belt" pulsing with arcane energies.

I think the tri corner hat, from having seen it, is more of a one-off and is not really the quality of the pack pieces we've seen thus far.

But we do know from leaks to the cc that there is some sort of chainmail set in the works. I don't think anyone has seen a single item from that yet. (IIRC, chainmail gloves made it as a blank item to the live build and chainmail coif made it to open beta or test.)

I'm glad that they looked at this side of the equation finally at least. Simply put, the short duration dual and team duration inspirations were like a hit of a bad street drug. A lot of money for a relatively brief high. Now these actually become reasonably useful. And less of a bummer draw if I ever decide to use 1 token for 5 (it is five right??) super card pack thingies.
  16. Heh. Ustream special guest star scooped by open beta server? Guess we'll see tomorrow.
  17. Bit of feedback if any rednames are reading: would love to see the new elemental and magma swords unlocked as alternate models for flame sword, at larger scale for greater flame sword, and the snow and ice sword as an alternate for the ice versions of these powers.

Pretty please? *insert doe eyed emoticon here*
  18. Several of these pieces are quite nice. I anticipate finding uses beyond their original intention.
  19. I used to have customized UI colors for all characters. I've noticed lately that the custom color mixup bug has gotten even stranger as of late. Not only do my customized colors sometimes get passed from one character to the next and not only do they sometimes reset to default alignment colors...

...but now I've started getting UIs with multicolored windows. Makes me think someone at Paragon has been tinkering under the hood with the HUD customization code and has me wondering if a forthcoming QoL improvement might be the ability to customize the color of any given window or at the very least some sort of enhanced HUD customization. (Or maybe it's just an artifact produced by new database systems put in place for CoH:F. But this multi-colored UI stuff seems pretty new to me.)
  20. The thing I hate the most about them: the time it can take to form them if your server population is currently low. And I hate the resulting sense of "better do it now while others are forming" pressure this also creates, even when I'm not in the mood for iTrials.

It's been a part of my love-hate relationship with all team required content and even at times teaming with friends who enjoy RPing. Sometimes I'm just in the mood to log in and be asocial. These pressures to team while the getting is good can run counter to those impulses. And I don't in any way blame the Devs for this. It's just one aspect of my fickle vascillating self.
  21. I tried to organize a few winter event teams on Triumph, but it was quite a struggle. Many longtime vets have gone off the event. And Lord Winter's realm proved surprisingly difficult for F2Pers. But I did manage to run the trial about a half dozen times to top off some badgers.

I did the gift giving and receiving badges on 9 or so of my more favored characters, including all 5 incarnates.

This was also my first year to ever nab the Speeder badge (gold on the bobsled) and I got it on about half a dozen characters.

Lastly, I took about 6 characters through the basic Snaptooth and Lady Winter badges.

I did not get Toy Collector on a single character, though I got credit that took me halfway there on a number of characters just by incidentally opening gifts.

But between the time it took to get a viable Lord Winter realm league together and the overall redundancy of the event mixed with not being in town for much of the duration, I was in something of a holiday malaise. I think the holiday/seasonal events in general bum me out more than they entertain me because I feel some compulsion to badge on all my characters while the options are available. This makes the game feel more like work than it already does on some days. These events feel like a distraction from what I once considered the core of the game: being a superhero or supervillain. Add to all this a bunch of great sales on a many AAA and indie titles from a certain digital download game service, and I found it hard to spend my game time logged into CoX for the holiday event this year.

Pretty much this. Wentworth's is the games PvP. And it's all about making change off the "gotta have it now" folks and people who don't understand how this particular interface or a blind auction works.

The one positive thing I will say about this system: it actually disincentivizes afk price barking which other games' common areas seem to be rife with.

Magic Carpet is live today. 600 pts.

Rocket Board is on sale. 450 pts.
  24. Concept all the way. Concept leads to interesting choices which can lead to challenging builds that still keep the game mechanics fresh for me.
  25. Bosses on ASAP. It's one of the basic things I do when setting up any new character, just like setting my chat channel colors.
