  1. Though I don't participate in these contests, putting my major efforts of creativity towards other ends IRL, I really do appreciate these contests as a spectator. Thanks Paragon and NC Soft for keeping a steady flow of things like this for the community!

I don't know. Things do seem a bit weird IMO. The boards are relatively dead as of late. And things pop up with tiny announcements after the fact. It's like the hype machine at Paragon has run out of gas.

Which is a pity. I miss the hype.

The only thing I can guess is that being Virtue, it attracts a higher percentage of RPers who alt. I RP and I really like my costume slots. Guessing that other RP focused players go for the extra costume slot more readily than non-RP players? Maybe that could account for the higher incidents of the DA on Virtue? If so perhaps a much longer "cool down" timer on the triggered version of the event may solve the issue. But as I don't have access to their raw data of what happens on each server, this is all conjecture. (Even if I had access to the rad data, I wouldn't know how to make sense of it though! )
  6. To Bill:

Yeah, redside I play on Virtue. And that is where I'm seeing DA event after DA event each evening. Meanwhile, on Triumph (my blueside first home) and Protector (second home), I rarely see the events triggered. I'm assuming it's just the higher population and new alts after new costume slots that can account for the MUCH higher incidents on Virtue.

My point overall is this: on these lower population servers, it's going to be hard as it is to get folks together to do the event on the rare chance it happens. On the large population servers it's a mild nuisance but still no one ever seems to be engaging it.

One person in this thread posts about wanting to get one last badge but not being able to rally enough folks. I understand the impetus to badge--I really do. I badge on ALL my characters, obsessively so on a good half dozen. And yet the sense that the DA (and ZA which right now on virtue seems to be triggered at about a 1 to 4 or 1 to 5 ratio instead) will ALWAYS be available--this sense seems to undermine chances of actually getting the badges for these HIGHLY team oriented events. Why not just shut the darn thing off except as a seasonal holiday? That way, enthusiasm for the DA will actually be there next year when ToT and all other things Halloween go live again.
  7. I recall reading somewhere that the Deadly Apocalypse was a taste of new more intricate events that were on the design table, including according to secondhand rumblings from hero con, new zone specific events for existing Paragon and Rogue Isle zones.

IF such a rolling revamp and diversification of zone events is in the works, PLEASE PLEASE devs consider the following:
    • Spandex - Keep some of these events closer to the source material of superhero comics. Not EVERY zone event needs to be a fight against hordes of supernatural minions (zombies, deadly apocalypse, winter horde) or an invasion (rikti and the as of yet never-revisited-Rularuu). There have got to be events you can engineer that involve that long roster of semi-generic but still costumed gallery of rogues and heroes used for mayhems and safeguards. I'm less optimistic about disasters. I seen a lot of vocal dissatisfaction over the Steel Canyon arsons--though I still like them. But that too remains another unrealized avenue for new event based content.
    • Scale and completability - I get the desire to make events so huge they require multiple teams. But please consider some single team/half team completable events with this new level of raid sophistication. IMHO it is not in the games best interest for ALL new event content to require Mothership Raid/DA/Lusca scale participation to complete.

I don't care if some of these are bank robberies where heroes need to simultaneously chase and take down two roving racing escape vehicles--one in the air--one peeling around blocks of the same city zone--only to face off against a foursome of EB status costumed foes emerging from the wreckage. Or if they are "mini invasions" by a team of EB's decimating a bunch of -3 cops in a roadblock or arresting all Rogue Island mobs in sight as a patrolling band of heroes. Just please, as you forge ahead, don't forget the uniqueness of the source material this game represents and make every zone event another massive fantasy raid pretending to be supers.

Then as soon as the event is over I wrap up the hunt mission. Sometimes I even jump in the AE and run something there.
But since this event requires usually two teams to complete and gain badges with and I have yet to see post Halloween a single broadcast, recruitment, etc. and when you buzz by the banners they are invariably unoccupied--if this event is now being ignored 100% by the player base because of it's dynamics (regardless of server population) and relative triviality on larger population servers--why is it even still running? If the data shows that 100% of the events over the past month have not been completed and if they haven't even been attempted, then this event now only exists to be avoided. And that is just weird.
  10. Ugh. This ongoing event--via costume salvage turn in--is REALLY getting intrusive and annoying. Devs, can you PLEASE PLEASE datamine and see if anybody is even participating anymore when this gets triggered? On Virtue now with a hunt mission needing to wait out YET ANOTHER iteration of the DA. Why isn't this event relegated to holiday season only? Especially since it dominates an entire zone for 15 minutes? I see it inadvertently tripped at least a half dozen times each play session on a crowded server like Virtue. And I honestly never see anyone anymore trying to complete the event for badges. If the data reflects what I suspect here--that any interest amongst the player base in this event has waned entirely, can it PLEASE just be switched off permanently till next Halloween?
  11. This thread makes me sincerely wonder if it would be possible to port Adventure (the granddaddy of text adventure games, not the Atari graphic game) or Zork or some such to twitter. Or would texting be a better medium technically speaking?

The only part that would suck is constantly getting return tweets: "I DONT UNDERSTAND THAT!"

Plus don't some of the room descriptions exceed the tweet character limit? Anyways, just some wacky thoughts at 6:00 am. sorry for the derail!

In the US depends on the state. They are illegal to carry some places, illegal to even own in others. As is pepper spray. If you are interested in carrying self defense weapons and have no ill intentions, best to check with local law enforcement openly or anonymously.

And always remember there is an old aphorism about needing to be prepared to use any weapon you would carry, lest it be used against you.

What he said. Being the victim of a crime, large or small, can reverberate into your psyche--sometimes even many months later. So take care of yourself, be good to yourself and know it's no reflection on your character if in the coming months you really need to talk to someone for some help getting over being mugged.

Glad to hear thought that you have a good relaxing release afterwords. CoX is definitely one of the healthier vices out there IMO.

  17. Another approach to make LATE LATE vet rewards acceptable in general:

Hows about vet rewards that offer similar SHARED functionality, like the portable workbench. The vet chooses between a few aesthetic thematic options (as we can now with our combat pets) and summons a magic ward/grows a tree/unfolds a device/etc. that allows all nearby players or teammates to:
    • Access their personal vault storage
    • Access and drop a limited number of items on the market
    • Purchase inspirations
    • Access a tailor (of either full or limited capabilities--i.e. costume only, no powers?)
    • Sell enhancements
    • "Slow time" by adding time to a currently active timed mish
    • Reveal ALL glowies or prisoners on the map (granted we actually get the reveal last glowie functionality for everyone)

And of course put these on incredibly long timers, such as 2-12 hours.

Basically little perks that add some aesthetic flavor to the vet but also creates something that has situational use and doesn't make teammates green with envy but rather appreciative. I know I've felt that way when I've teamed with folks who have a [portable workbench] that they drop midway through a series of missions so folks can lighten their recipe inventories without deleting. And with my one (of 30+ alts) I actually bothered to get that accolade on, I also have been able to help a team out once or twice--or simply drop it at the market for all around to use.

Again, just some ideas for ways to deal with 6 and 7 year vet rewards to come up with non-costume-item, non-yet-another-respec-and-costume-change, non-city-traveler-that's-so-unfair-type rewards but still feel unique, special and prestigious. In fact, if you come up with a dense enough list to choose from, each with a different functionality, the next four vet rewards could write themselves as you let players pick one from a list of say 7-10 different functions for their reward. 3 months later, pick a second such reward from the same list. And so on.
  18. As to the OP, I personally find the +5 recipes VERY useful. But I use both the market and the inventions system regularly. The increased slots means not having to choose between deleting booty vs. interrupting a good roll of play with a trip to the blackmarket or wentworths.

As to the larger question of what could be given to vets in the future? How about vanity powers of all sorts that summon NPCs for silly emotes for one:
    • blueside:
      • [autograph session]
      • [journalist]
      • [groupies: female]
      • [groupies: male]
    • redside:
      • [shakedown]
      • [mug]
      • [backalley deal]
      • [insight dissent]
      • [evil assistant]

These aren't costume parts or costume change emotes or even powers given to super-long-term vets. They would be fun, dumb character +NPC emotes. If need be, small bonus buffs similar to dayjobs could be attached to them. But not really necessary IMO.
  19. You still get a halo of green when getting healed regardless of the color of the power animation. Your status tray, health bar and experience of a mission or two should be enough to let you know how skilled and alert the support on your team actually is, even in a PuG. If things are all good, take bigger risks and push the envelope. A constant green beacon isn't going to make a difference either way.

Speaking for myself: If it fits a character's aesthetics and concept, my buffs and heals will be bubblegum pink. Personally grew very tired of the default green for empathy and the years long hegemony of homogony. I'm thrilled we have this option and the wide range of variety now. Even if the combos make me want to barf now and then...

Quoted for truth. I'm definitely in the "I've been waiting for years for rigid back costume parts" camp. And at this point, I've decided to give up hope on these options ever coming if modified skeletons with a proper back rig don't come with GR. I understand it was going to take a lot of work. (think it had to do with scaling and some deep level character model modifications, not certain though) Beyond basic power customization and perhaps due to my own fervent desire for this class of costume options, I can't imagine a better allotment of limited art and development resources than this at this stage of development. And that includes placing this higher than new powerset animations and effects, full costume themes and new enemy groups. We have MANY of all of those options versus a big ZERO ZILCH on rigid back details. So to me, from an admitted sideline armchair perspective, the math is simple and the choice a no-brainer.

But again, my perspective is likely clouded by my longstanding want for this specific set of customization options. And I very well could be in the minority. Anyways, my last round of finger crossing is for inclusion in GR. After that, I'm officially moving my position to the more cynical and disappointed "never gonna happen in CoX 1." I'm just too tired and too old to go on hoping beyond hope that I too may one day sport a virtual rucksack.

If we examine the game even in brief we discover that Natural, as defined by the game, is a power source that incorporates being extremely well trained. You know, like a Ninja. Natural Origin SO Enhancements all represent either "Military" level training techniques or have a strong Martial Arts theme to them. Natural Contacts all tend to be highly trained secret agent types or the like. So it's clear that for this game, as a power source, "Natural" refers to an elite and amazing level of training.

You know, like a Ninja might have.

So... a jetpack really is a piece of Technology, and wouldn't really fit. There's nothing wrong with a scabbard or quiver, but there were technical hurdles involved and I'd rather be having this discussion about a pack I already have than be waiting for those issues to be resolved. In the meanwhile, the robes, masks, and the like that we did get all support the game's definition of "Natural" super powers, where as a jetpack doesn't. Now can we all shut the hell up about Super Booster Pack IV and discuss our hopes for Pack V, as the thread is clearly hoping to do?
okay, now you're just teasing poor Dispari at this point! you said yourself: "military elite" and "superspy" fit some of the in game precedents for natural origin characters. a jet pack rides the fence between tech and natural. in many contexts it could be seen as a piece of elaborate elite gear that only those with the correct connections & training have access to and are able to use adeptly. the truth of it is the developers went with asian martial arts as the focused theme of this pack. and that's that. those who were disappointed in this choice, myself included, should at this point move on. but your argument that quivers, scabbards, hip holsters, boot holsters and sheaths and some higher tech but still merc and superspy flavored gear is not fitting for a natural themed pack is as silly as this extended argument. (yes. I see how a jetpack and some more elite items become tech in the context of an iron man type character, but you have to admit that jetpacks have also looooong been a part of pulp spy aesthetics.)

more interesting AND germane to the thread subject though is your brief assessment that powers you are born with. I've honestly never looked at it that succinctly. but I think it's a good definition. but what about what I'd consider the game's most obvious precedent for mutants: DE devoured? aren't they considered mutants? the mutant inherent power is a spore burst and IIRC even mentions the devouring earth in its descriptive text. beyond monstrous and animal parts, I for the life of me draw nothing but blanks for other options for this pack.

admittedly though, the number and range of monstrous and animal themes possible could be spread across at least 3 different booster packs. bird heads, talons, dimensional feather details for shoulders, chest, belt. amphibian heads, patterns, feet, gills, etc. revisioned and revamped fur and about any variety of mammalian heads from gorillas to bears to better cats and canines. full bushy tails. animated tails of a wide range with a modified "cape physics" of their own. the whole devouring earth/swamp thing aesthetic could also be pushed harder and further with a wider range of plant/hominid hybrid parts. all of this, despite some earlier renditions of plant details and our limited current selection of monstrous details in the CC, all of it represents a huge hole IMO in the character creator library.

the only other direction I could see going for what I understand CoX's definition of mutant is into the grotesque. and I'm not sure how we'd get there. second heads? extra limbs? grotesquely muscular figures? flippers for hands? all of those things IMO go beyond the bounds of the current engine. I guess a few more oozy and disgusting auras could help us realize the grotesque, especially if they like combat auras were available from level 1. but beyond that, nope, still drawing blanks other than loads and loads of anthropomorphic animal bits.
  22. So as to not threadjack the Booster Pack V thread, starting something new. In that thread, folks postulate what might or might not happen after the mutant pack is released. What would you like to see happen: Start over and work back through origins on another pass? Drop the origins theme as a guideline and go for specific targeted themes? Anyone theme that is greatly missing from your game or could help you more thoroughly realize your characters and creations?

In other words, what would you want for your $10 U.S. from Super Booster Packs VI and beyond?
