Another anecdote to stack onto the growing pile... which may eventually become data:
Ran a few trials today begrudgingly:
That MA/Inv scrapper that's been having bum luck on 50+ trials? Two more commons. (still no drops above an uncommon on her)
That ill/storm that's gotten great luck thus far? Another rare (his 5th) and an uncommon.
The randomness is getting to be predictable. I feel like I know which character I can run if I want a rare. Something ain't right with this system. -

http://www.cityofheroes.com/news/new...r_rewards.html
Strange. Here it says the 18th. Can we get a confirmation on which one is correct? -
Quote:Thanks for the info and going the extra mile to alert me of the Lucky badge. Need to think if I want that title for any character concepts yet to be hatched. (Hope we can someday use something like Astral merits to buy back missing badge titles like this! :P)The Vanguard Pack and The Constant badge will be awarded on a per-account basis and will be made available to all characters (new or old) the first time they log in after the promotional window ends.
There will also be a 7-year anniversary badge called Lucky that will only be available for logging in during the appropriate window, which historically has been the entire month of May. -
So the loyalty period is set to end midnight on Monday the 18th.
Does this mean Tuesday we'll be getting this reward account wide? Do we need to log in our characters, or is it to the full account automatically like the new incentive aura was?
If we need to log in each character to get these rewards (like past anniversary badges), what is the window to do so?
Thinking of taking a little break. But would like to know the answers to these questions before doing so. -
Are you saying you take a shower while waiting for your BAF to get ready?

Quote:Same here. May AoE elemental based characters are swimming in Rares relative to the number of trials done. But my single target lethal damage scrapper with multiple team buffing powers and debuff procs gets nada 50 some trials in. And with her, I've taken the time to organize and lead at least ten successful trials--a boon to my playmates on Triumph as any successful lead can be. Happy to do it. But to have a borked reward system that seems to keep those rares and or very rares out of her reach? Blech. This system isn't as bad of a fail as PvP2.0 is, but still it's pretty dang bad. If they don't make it totally random I'm going to be pretty pissed, I've been working my butt off for Very Rares and Rares and am getting diddly 40-50 trials in....
No matter what they do to make it "participation based" it will never be fair because there are too many variables. With random drops you only have leechers as a variable as getting drops when they shouldn't. I guess that's what the kick button was made for. The Devs have definitely overcomplicated this issue and it's killing me.
Plus, with all that playtime, I've not gotten a single purple drop since i20 launched. -

Quote:There's already something in game that starts edging towards how this could be accomplished without clipping too many costume bits: those council ascendants and the way their shields unfold when they hibernate. It's not perfect and it's a bit further from the body than what folks are asking for--but I just wouldn't expect the skin tight tiling as seen in the lost in space clip or in iron man.

Sidetrack on this, though this could be seen as a marketing effort, I've wondered recently if the GR gating of this content is so they can use the higher advertised minimum specs for GR versus vanilla CoH when considering player tech while designing these new challenges.

Quote:I've always wanted a theater interior--perhaps in King's Row. One of those old run down joints.Pocket D does serve for a nice location for my more socially inclined characters, though I would love to see a few RP friendly cross faction RP spots added.
Mission roleplay is <3 though!
Though admittedly that's not cross faction. -
Quote:Ahhh. Another roleplayer of similar mind. What server are you on? >.> Would love to stumble across some in character play (no--not ERPRP should be all around the place... not stuck to one zone. Like mentioned before.. the Midnighters club... the Monkey Bar?... etc. There is no reason to always gather in Pocket D for RP unless you are looking for people who frequent the bar or for contacts you never met before.
I know my main is rather in her base or at the Midnighters Club then at the bar... even though she likes to party once in a while.) someplace like the Midnighter Club or Vanguard Base that actually made contextual sense. The explanation of "putting ones feet up after a long day of heroing and villaining at the bar" still strikes me rather silly stretch for what RP that some people take as very srs. (One thing I did really like about Champions btw was the gym they put in as an RP mini zone. It was great for pick-up sparring as well as a place that you'd more likely find several of my characters going to relax after a long day of heroing...)
Back to the main topic, despite my prior rants about the finer points of roleplay, those pointing out that pocket D in its disregard by the non-RP majority of the player population did become a defacto RP haven on many servers. Yes it is all "our" game, meaning those that run trials and RPers who don't run trials. I'm not sure if harmony will every be found, but polite mutual tolerance should be exercised at a minimum. -
I roleplay. A lot. Often, except on trials on my home server, I'm 100% in character all the time.
One thing I've honestly never understood is why do some roleplayers spend so much time roleplaying their characters as what amounts to little more than barflies?
In this game, I tend to do very little non-combat, non-run-and-gun RP. It's often situational. ie. Why would these disparate characters be teaming up? Can we tweak the story the devs and canon content have given us to fit our characters and motivations?
But were I to stop and plan some 100% non-combat downtime RP, why not go to the sewers amongst the roaches? The docks amongst dockworkers? Or inside city hall? Or atop some building looking out over the city? Or at least inside an SG base? Is it just an eagerness for a nightlife-never-had or already-past that lures some folks to pocket D for hours of that sort of RP? Even if it's romance, I'd think a lovely picnic double date with three other heroes all in civies on the rolling lawns in Praetoria would be more interesting than RPing over and over again in the same dark brooding bar. I've done that already IRL. Bars are awful places to be at closing time--so unless you are trying to play a lush, why do it?
Anyways, /tangential rant -
Very nice.

I've used dark melee for toxic melee on my shields brute Sludgemouth. It works well. Pukey green with orange accents gives it the right shade of nastiness.

Quote:Hmm... I'll twist my noodle over it. But the repurposing of whirlwind and it's control was my attempt to also keep some diversity in how the powers function. It seems like the first four judgement trees have tried to display that with a couple targeted AoE, one PBAoE and one cone damage.Oh... I must have misread what you meant
Yeah, that's kind of in the spirit of what I was talking about, but when it comes to melee weapons, at least, I've always been more a fan of a large cone rather than a PBAoE. Maybe I'm biassed, in that Shaman King was one of the first decent animes I saw, but I've always wished for a power that's kind of like Yoh's Celestial Slash. We kind of sort of get something like that in Dual Blades' Sweeping Strike. I'm talking about something like that, but even bigger.
That said - no, I would not be picky if I were given the hurricane of melee weapon power you suggested. I would be thrilled, in fact
A quick revision to the whirlwind of death: the area of effect for the fear effect should probably be much larger than the damage area. And maybe it should be terrorize rather than fear? The two are different, correct? -
Quote:Makes me wish I had gone DA with my mer character, a scrapper called Pelagic Patriot. But I opted for shields instead. Didn't even think about dark armor as an option at the time.
Eon Scar, my now-31 Dark/Kin Tanker. His powers are colored Dark Blue (primary) and Sky Blue (secondary) for a watery, murky feel. It's beautiful. I plan to take him into Void Judgement and color it the same way.
I presume you'll be getting the Mako patron pool for this guy? -
Quote:I have one character that is in the same thread as Superman, She-Hulk and Wonder Woman. I want her to be big and bad enough to solo a few more things, like AVs and some of the zone GMs, than she currently can. So I'm shooting for that tier 4 diamagnetic interface enhancement that nets her the 100% regeneration proc which as I understand it can be stacked in applications to reduce any single enemy's regen up to 60%. Pretty key if I want to solo a few of the big bad things I'd expect to see her fighting on the cover of her comic! For most of my characters, and I would wager probably a large percentage of the characters in the game, the level shift is the ONLY reason to bother progressing past the Uncommon level in your Alpha slot. Unless you're the type that would do it just so you can say "look what I have!" (probably doesn't apply to you, but it does apply to others)

Quote:Then think of this as our secret wars, extinction agenda, civil war or whatever other publisher multibook "event" analogue you want.In a team book, it's about the individual members coming together as part of the team. Do you really think anyone would care about the Justice League if it was all D-listers, with no character development beyond "these guys all fought this bad guy?"
When it's about ALL the teams, it's really not. It's about the event. That's what we're getting here. It's not about us anymore, it's about the Praetorian invasion and about Cole. If it was a comic book, that might work, because sometimes people want to read about the villain (albeit a more interesting one than Cole), but in an MMO that is so character-focused, not so much.
The truth of it is, as someone said either in this thread, if you want some of the shinies, put on a helmet, grab your favorite super dooper super, do the trials about 10 times each and at least get some interface and judgement.
Then you can go back to soloing or running AE arcs that fit your tastes with a few things in your pocket that make your most amazing character all that more amazing. Similar to a few characters coming back from Secret Wars changed perhaps forever. -

Just checked the launcher and all three versions are patching for me: Live, Test and Beta.
So happy triple patch day everyone!
Edit: The test center patch is curiously significant at 313.3mb.... >.> -
Quote:Very nice. Sandman in the old books was one of my favorites. I've wondered how one might do something like that.Dark Armor has always looked like a mess to me, graphically. It's a big black blur of particles that evokes nothing.
Then a few days ago, I saw that guy named Living Sand (link to picture), a spines/DA scrapper. The screenshot doesn't do it justice, ingame it really looks like he's some kind of sand monster. That's a pretty awesome use of power customisation, turning a poor looking set (IMHO) into a whole new, good-looking concept.
So it got me to wonder, have you seen any really cool and inventive uses of power customisation out there? Any screenshots to share? -

A few ideas for more judgement trees, some based on things already suggested. Thinking of these as "signature powers"--so trying to hit a wider variety of "signatures" Obviously, balancing would be in order where one or two might be heavy on debuffs, the numbers somewhere would need to be lower:
- Orbital Canon - AoE power with targeting recticle. Uses an animation similar to either surveillance or one of the merc animations of talking into a military radio. One side of the tree is damage based as per other judgement trees. Not sure what the secondary effects should be.
- Critical Mass - (no not bike commuters :P) PBAoE energy based judgement. Character drops into the energy morph cce pose. Same circle of white light at the core followed by a shockwave of judgement. Energy damage. Secondary effects perhaps mimic some of what is seen in radiation as this power could double for both energy and rad themed characters?
- Divine Incantation - AoE with targeting recticle. Character's head tips back in an animation similar to the oracle in the ITF. A large runic pattern appears on the ground where targeted (or perhaps the ground pattern from the banners on the banner event?). Runic particles swirl about about the area and each affected victim. An even split of cold, fire, psi and dark damage. Someone wanna help me on what the ideal secondary effects could be or would be?
- Utter Chaos - The psionic meets cosmic prankster judgement power. Not sure on the animation for this one, but feels like it should be PBAoE. Left side is all psionic damage. The secondary side is special as it features a wildcard system (new tech I guess)--at top tier there is a chance that any affected victim will have any of the following 2 effects applied to them: -recharge, confuse, fear, sleep, hold (petrified with fear) or stun.
- Nanite Army - Targeted AoE. Uses a simple powder toss animation, like seeds of confusion. Then particles, similar to the bots set repair nanites squirm away from the caster towards the targets. Does a split of energy and cold damage. Potential secondary effects: -def, -dmg, -res, -recharge, slow.
- Ideas for a might based judgement:
- 2 Ton Hammer - PBAoE. Requires the character be grounded like footstomp. Character drops to the ground punching left right over and over WHAM!WHAM!WHAM!WHAM! triggering a massive brief earthquake. Smashing damage with chance to override resistance on the left side of the tree. (Concerned about how common high smashing and lethal resists are in late game for the next several powres). Smashing damage with the following secondaries on the right side of the tree: chances for -res, knockup, & stun.
- Hail Mary Hurl - Targeted AoE or AoE with targeting recticle. Character pulls a random vehicle model out of their dimensional pocket (where all our rifles and battle axes are kept!) and hurls it. The bus/truck/tank explodes on impact into physics appropriate physics particles doing an even split of fire and smashing damage. Secondary effects include knockback and stun.
- Ideas for non-tech weapons based characters:
- Storm of Steel: Targeted cone based. Character does a dervish dance, launching a cone of shurikens, throwing knives and perhaps one or two other models just for ridiculousness sake. Left side of the tree is lethal damage, again with a chance to circumvent resists. Right side has following secondary effects: -def, chance for +toxic dmg dot, slow.
- Whirlwind of Death: Think of this as Whirlwind++. You need to steer this one. Character draws their melee weapon (adds weapon customization if you have no blade) and then proceeds to become literally a whirlwind of death. Different pose, slightly more transparent tornado particle effects than normal whirlwind. Does massive DoT when touching baddies. Slight chance of knockup. Advancing up the tree increases how long the power lasts. Secondary effects: -def, increased chance of knockup, fear.
That's about all I got in me for now. Feel free to abuse and criticize the list to make it a more balanced set of suggestions in light of this discussion. I took the title of the topic quite literally, trying to come up with a number of signature powers that weren't elemental in terms of fire or electricity, etc.
Oh and though it's not on topic, must say here since we're talking alternative trees: I want me some Rularuu Lore pets! - Orbital Canon - AoE power with targeting recticle. Uses an animation similar to either surveillance or one of the merc animations of talking into a military radio. One side of the tree is damage based as per other judgement trees. Not sure what the secondary effects should be.

Quote:This. From what I've seen, the queue is where the majority of the fail lies in this system.
I just hope it isn't all wasted development time and that the underlying foundation is one that they can use to improve how the queue works in terms of the social impact.
i.e.--- let us enter missions and get zapped out of them if in the queue.
- let us join trials already in progress--but maybe give a trial leader the option to "lock" (and subsequently "unlock") a trial so no-one new can join it--one extra button for the league leader to manage
- reconsider the social engineering of the queue so it is more likely to create some 12-16 person Lambdas and closer to full BAFs when it draws from players queueing
