My favorite is prolly a Sonic. It's great fun to watch a team of players go from "we'll need another defender if he's a sonic/" to "how are we gonna survive" to "why am I holding back" during a TF.
Remember the best mastermind in the entire game is a Sonic/Sonic defender.
The key to being a good one is to remember all the extra damage your teammates do is yours. -

Your suggestions are very nice. If I go your route I'm going complete offender and definitely should go back to Dark Mastery. I'd even go back to Blizzard just for another source of uberdamage.
I don't mind giving up the acc cuz I'll be living with aim/SD/-def so that will be more than covered.
Have you found yours to be survivable enough to deal with the melee times for soul drain?
Have you done any endgame stuff with it? Did you survive well or were you straining to make purples/mez prots all the time?

Nice build stormy. Next question is would you consider taking OG, for melee defensive mez, for when you run in for your sunless mire... er, soul drain?
The other thought would be to go with Soul mastery, maybe as the alternate build. Now your soul drain would only be up for approx 30 out of 70 seconds, but you get the power boost which would do wonders for a lot of your TA powers. For instance, Flash arrow becomes a 15.1% tohit debuff(unresistable) which would be about as good at debuffing an AV as a Dark fender. True, it's less of an offender build (mostly due to soul drain recharge in soul mastery), but just trying to get a feeling as to what would work better. -
I was playing with mids for a plant/psi and noticed that in extreme conditions, this dom can potentially reach 2000% regen. Sounds like with Hoarfrost running you can play tanktrollblastscraper for the duration. Also sounds like it ain't quite true.
Anyone with experience with this build? Is this actually a legitimate regen amount or is it just Mids playin games with my mind?

I been reworking my TA/Ice and it seems like going without blizzard actually makes him stronger. This is a high recharge build that should be quite good for farming and not half bad as a team fender (even without my healz arrow). I've done good work tankfending with this guy on TFs without IOs, so I went lower on defense. I will be capped for ranged/n/e due to flash arrow. Other advantages of this route is near perma ice storm/soul drain/hasten. And there are some unusually high damage potential with this config and oil slick and ice storm.
Question would be how would this toon do with some of the end game content we have now. I've not gotten into a bunch of it yet as I been leveling up some chars and getting them up to their snuff after my time out of the game.
I'm currently only 29 with him, so I wanted to get the opinion of the crowd before I go crazy. Any opinions will be appreciated.

So did the formula change for -tohit? Lots of ppl keep saying that it's equal to defense added. That didn't used to be the consensus by the number crunchers. I don't remember the exact math, but someone else might. Seems like it was something like 150% of defense. Does anyone know the numbers?

Sounds like flash arrow is a very nice power against the AVs then. It's 9.9% enhanced. Or if you use PBU, it's up to 16.1%. That's a lot of debuffage for an arrow everyone hates.
Of course, I've used it regularly on my TA/Ice when he starts tankfending for groups... late 20s on him but it's a nice experience while it lasts.
And I want a confuse arrow to go with my heal arrow! -
So that -85% to tohit debuffs is confirmed? I've never seen that number before.
That means that a Dark/ fender is only getting
(~45% from chill of night (fluffy) + ~30% from fearsome stare + ~30% from Darkest Night)*15% = 14.25% debuffing on an AV? and that's optimal slotting for tohit debuffing.
That's kinda disappointing. -

It's an interesting power. But if I were to, say, take it on my Elec/Earth, give it 5 damage procs, it still wouldn't be all that impressive dps. Of course, set up like that it doesn't really *do* dps, it does "when the ten second mark rolls around, something gets totally clobbered, and something gets totally missed".
I don't know. I still think I might want to try it.

I've noticed that AA is great mitigation on its own except for the initial alpha and ranged. that's why i wanted ranged defense 1st. But, I know that good positional is a great way to go. My initial build kind of went for a general approach. I can shore it up if that's the way i decide to go.
I made a build for pretty good defense using ice mastery. I'm still not sure I want to go the way though simply because ice provides a good chunk of mitigation with mezzing and I like the extra damage that soul will provide. Cold will provide a good deal of survivability though.

Thx for the opinions guys. I had almost given up on the idea after spending half the afternoon with my new toon anyway. AA is great all by itself. I can see that WoC will not get a lot of usage due to the fear factor in AA.
I'm thinking now that I'm gonna try for ranged defense on this char and maybe go for the soul mastery route. the damage with soul drain is just freakin awesome (according to mids anyway). Pulling that off with permadom would be quite a feat though.
The other option is the ever popular ice mastery and get some s/l/e/n defenses going. Probably easier, but not sure if I want the ice shield look.

Yeah the concept is more than a bit tricky with that combo. I went with the thorn mutant who was abducted, then reared by cot when she was young as she also had a penchant for magic. You know, the whole "Good work Wesley. Get some sleep. We'll most likely kill you in the morning" routine.

I've just started a new ice/thorn dom and really like the combo so far. I was thinking maybe I could leverage confuse from AA with WoC.
Has anyone tried this combo? How is it working for ya? -
So you guys know where I'm coming from with this post. One of my favorite chars to play is my sonic/sonic fender (Tullamore on Infinity). It does some really remarkable things when on a team killing the big game (AVs, GMs, etc). When I started looking at the numbers on this combo, it really jumped out at me as a char that can outdo what sonic/sonic can in that kind of situation. I know life with one would be a little bit challenging on the personal defense level, but the rest of it looked so crazy good that I had to post to see what you all really thought.

Awesome that flashfreeze can be leveraged like that. I was looking at chill too for the shield and hoarfrost but thought flash would be a stinker power. Now it looks like i can get some control to go with the goodness. It's all piling up now.

Thx for the advice on the incarnate stuff as i still don't have all that down yet (since my return to the game). And yeah, i know personal defense will be one of the areas of concern for this combo.
Biggest problem will be fitting in all the powers I want. Now that's a problem worth having. -
I decided to do the math on debuf/buff values for a Demon/therm and it looks like a monster: 80% -res, approx 28% -Defense, ~28.8% resist to S/L/E/N/, ~8% res Fire, ~19% res Ice, up to 67.5% plus damage (30% single target), 37.5% -damage, 500% -regen, 200% -endo, mezz protection (not for you, unfortunately)... Oh yeah, and healing on top of it.
Have any of you guys played this combo and is it as good as it looks on paper? -
sweet. that would make 2 bpaoe stun sources. I know that psy shockwave is only a 50% chance, but it's still a decent chance at boss level stuns.
The next logical question is how much damage is how much damage will empty clips/bullet rain/psy scream going to put on a full mob. If that combo can decimate all of the minion levels then it would make OG less desirable as it would only be a 50% chance with psy shockwave of doing you any good against the remaining foes. If that combo (with bu or aim) leaves only lts and above limping toward you then I would possibly look at a different powerchoice and keep coning your way to glory. -
Made one trying to get to softcap for ranged. Didn't make it, but close.

I think ranged is definitely the way to go due to the advantages of mental manipulation. You can easily open with ranged cones (you have 2 plus a ranged aoe). One of these will be Psy scream (-50 rech for 10 sec) and let them get into melee range. Hit them with psy shockwave (-50 rech for 20 seconds plus a 50% chance to mag 2 stun) while world of confusion ticks in every 4 seconds. this is a significant debuffing defense to go with drain psyche and should allow you to survive melee quite well for the few seconds you will be in it.
I wonder what oppressive gloom (another mag 2 stun that you can offset with drain psyche) would add to it?

I don't know how happy most teams will be with the new Night Torrent (or whatever they call it). Tents have no -kb component that I'm aware of, so knockabout will abound.
Another concern is will the kb be 100% like Torrent. With Nightfall you usually have to step back to get everything into the area you just tent'ed, so you can imagine the combo if Nighttorrent isn't 100%. tent/step back/Nighttorrent/kb some of em... then what? Might be a big ol mess.
Also, if they keep Life Drain, it hits only as well as the tier 1. True, it's a heal, but even on the fender set it's not a great heal. Something like 10%. My guess is frankenslotting will get you like 18% heal and 100 damage for like 10 or so endo. Great for utility, but blasters like to make things ded. -
I have a 50 MA/SD and it's a very nice build. Either would be good choices, but the extra damage makes MA feel like you are really smashing. I haven't even respected it yet from pre inherent fitness days and it still feels like a tank on steroids.

Consider for a moment: Torrent + Tents + Dark pit & oppressive gloom + anguishing cry + soul drain. Blackstar will be poppin off for like 700 pts of damage and everything you hit will be either faceplanted or stunned and debuffed like crazy.

I just rolled a grav/psi myself and am glad to see this thread. I think that what's gonna make this set sing is the secondary. lots of -rech, heal, endo, small stun, kb. The set is what sold it for me, not just looking at the primary for control/damage mitigation.
It won't be an uber build, but who really cares? As long as you can get in there and kick some butt, it's all good.

Quote:Does -dam have the same issues as -tohit? Will it be watered down at +3/+4?It's not as important unless you are cranking your difficulty up to +3/+4 when your debuffs are resisted quite a bit more.
A Dark/DP defender using night fall and chem rounds can crank out some of the highest -dam numbers in the game which is almost as good as extra resistances.
