Quote:But then they wouldn't SELL as many! Gasp!
This is why people hate marketing and commercials. Obviously, they care more about making money than preventing harm. An informed customer is the enemy of marketing, unless the company actually has a superior product. But then again, they wouldn't need superior marketing nearly so badly if they did.
The best product (or service) in the world is useless if nobody knows it exists; which is exactly what this game suffers from most I'd argue. -

Ok

No!
But I'm glad you appreciate what we do -

I deleted my only lvl 50 MM but I've got a couple more brewing but they are very different to my preferred ATs and take a lot more work

Quote:What do you mean by "encourage them to take more stock etc"? Do they use a carrot or a stick?
I owned several comic stores here in California about 10 years ago. At that time Diamond encouraged us with carrots by giving larger discounts the more we ordered (something like 35% for $400-$999, 40% for $1000-$2000, etc) as well as special exclusive pieces (Alternate covers, Life Size Inflatable Spiderman, etc) if we ordered 25-100 of a particular title.
Other product distributors we dealt with would use a stick to "encourage" you by shipping you 0% of your order if they only received say 50% of the product and would instead make sure their large accounts got the product first.
How does Diamond encourage the outlets over in your neck of the woods?
Another question if you can answer it, When we produced an advertisement and used a DC or Marvel character we would be reimbursed for the percentage of the advert that the character used. In other words if the bottom quarter of a $300 newspaper advert had Spiderman than Marvel thru Diamond would reimburse us for $75.
So far as I understand it's a sliding scale discount: The more you take the less you pay per unit. As for the 2nd part I suspect that's not available here because there's very little independent advertising so my guess (I stress it's a guess) is that it's a no. -
Let's face it, it's not as though the forum software isn't doing what they want to do and pushed to the limits of its endurance.

I like this and Sam's ideas (I think I posted in Sam's thread when he proposed it.)
But personally I already find this game too easy so maybe another level of difficulty could be added to the defeat - optional of course - that allows you to decide how "badly" beaten you are and the ramifications of that. Maybe there could be a trade off with greater rewards, XP or shards etc.
On the other hand it's adding a whole extra few levels of complexity to the game that could take up an awful lot of resource for limited benefit, so I won't be holding my breath -
Quote:Marketing departments are what brought us the "sugar is sugar" commercials paid for by the Corn industry. Yes, it is, but sugar is also what is making this nation incredibly fat, and that includes your high fructose corn syrup. I am actually happy that the marketing team here finally learned that people want to make informed decisions when it comes to their money. I wish more companies would actually admit the truth of their product, and let customers make informed decisions.
Yeah let's ban marketing and save the people from themselves! -

There's probably a joke about a Nemesis Semi in here somewhere

Quote:You don't know much about marketing do you? It's getting people interested in the product and wanting to know more. As for "due dilligence" you don't need to do that in the opening gambit (and for the record the all sales are final disclaimer is pretty limited at best.)what's to pitch?
you either like the idea of turning into a sneaky panther or you don't- the basic effect is pretty clear cut.
specifying what the power isn't is simple due diligence on the ALL SALES FINAL Marketplace.
Quote:Most products are marketed based on the premise of roping in suckers. Paragon deserves recognition for being a bit more respectful than that.
Where's the competition? If you read it as criticism you may just be inferring.
But ok... let's compare and contrast some examples with the above and see how they stack up.
How about this example?
Quote:Liger Pet
Location: Powers > Permanent Powers > Pet
Use this power to summon a liger - it's only our favorite animal. This rare predator has a mane of a lion and is striped like a tiger with our own unique twist: a scorpion tail!
Let's try another - a totally "like for like" example by comparing another travel power desciption:
Quote:Flying Carpet Travel Power
Location: Powers > Permanent Powers > Travel
Activate this Persian-type carpet with its own golden magic lantern and soar across the skies like Aladdin! All characters in your account can access this fantastic power. It's usable at Level 4. For all characters in your account.
See the difference? It makes you imagine being there "soaring across the skies like Alladin" - and there's no mention in that description that it'll detoggle your powers.
Yes, there is a need to let the customer know what will happen before they buy, but it's completely inappropriate in your marketing introduction. Marketing is about generating interest.
Coincidentally here's some of the best marketing I've seen recently - albeit to an audience that's already solidly sold but this is pretty ace - except it's come from the Community team, not marketing. This wins because it's just a very brief sentence which encourages you to click the link and then suddenly you're presented with a huge "Wow-Factor" - you only have to read the posts following to know how well that went down.
Paragon can do marketing sometimes, but sadly the marketing team frequently turn out sub-par stuff. Considering how great this game really is, that's a real shame. -
Quote:Yes, but how did the giant bones get there... and even more important: What killed them?Coolest? Eh. Hess isn't bad, I'll grant, but it's mostly for the robot.
I still like the main Eden trial map. Nothing like it in the game. Huge, very organic, giant bones scattered here and there, it's just incredible looking. -
Hey check this out... the superlative description for the new Panther stealth power really takes Paragon's marketing to the next level.
You can read it here but look at what they've done in the description:
Quote:How's that for an amazing sales pitch?! Two neat paragraphs only three short sentences. No extraneous guff or irrelevant details just a simple "this is what it is, this is when you can use it and then an entire paragraph dedicated to telling you what it won't do.Transform into a black panther and turn invisible to stalk your prey from the shadows! Once purchased, this power will be unlocked on all characters on your account, and usable at Level 4.
When the Panther Stealth Power is active, all powers become disabled and untoggled (although use of one Vanity Pet is allowed).
Perfect: No unrealistic raising of user expectation, no unwitting exhortation to rush out and buy the product (because now we know what it won't do, we're going to buy it on impulse, right?) There's no unnecessary hype - or even a waste of space outlining the features and benefits of said travel power cuz... it's a panther stealth power and it turns everything off when you use it... that's all you need to know. EVER!
Brilliant stuff Paragon Marketing. You have finally excelled yourselves! Black Pebble, I salute you! Superlative work that leaves us other professional marketeers dead in your wake. -
If I were a Dev
I'd dev in the morning
I'd dev in the evening
All over this world
I'd dev about heroes
I'd dev about villains
I'd dev about crits between my scrappers and my cruppers
I'd dev about my MMs and my fenders
all over our world -
Quote:PraetoriaThe game *desperately* needs new 1-30 content.
Most of the existing content in that range *shipped with the game* and is an absolute embarrassment, even when compared to something like radio missions.
MMOs are bottomless pits that can soak up infinite amounts of content without filling up. Sure, we could use more high level content- but objectively the existing high level stuff is, for the most part, pretty good, while the majority of the low level stuff is absolute swill- just terrible, indigestible garbage.
If you're expecting your new 'free to play' initiative to attract new players, it behooves you to add some good low level stuff so the theoretical hoards checking out your game don't say "OMG GET ME OUT OF HERE" after their first street hunt followed by a fedex to a security chief halfway across the city.
Habashy
Twinshot
Mercy (Oh mandatory Mongoose how I miss you [not])
First Ward
Death From Below
Drowning in Blood
There's plenty of 1-30 content
Whether you like it or not is entirely subjective but it IS there and the Devs clearly have listened
Nobody needs to go into the Hollows these days unless they absolutely want to (and actually the Hollows arc is pretty good taken in isolation but it did burn a lot of players out with its constant re-runs)
And just who gets embarrassed running older content? I don't think I've ever blushed saving Atlas Park Bank. I don't think I even piddled myself when I got caught robbing it either. If you go beetroot when you run older stuff I'd suggest that's your own issue - and it's nnot a huge leap of faith to suggest there might be an outcry if the older content got removed - because, you know actually some of us still like to run it.
The good news is, if you don't like it, you don't need to do it. But I'll decide what is "good" or what is "bad" within my own frame of reference. -
I must admit I'd understood (probably incorrectly) that the item you obtained would be random per individual - in other words everyone gets something different.
It seems that doing it this way is potentially easier, but perhaps a bit limited in what can be offered?
I don't know. It's a nice to have and the XP booster is useful -
Every silver lining has a cloud!
For the record, I think that the SSA arc is pretty good. It's not completely awesome in every mission of every arc throughout the whole story but the entire arc holds together pretty well and does throw up a few surprises that will have a lasting impact on the game.
I play this game to be entertained.
SSA:WWD entertained me.
Job done! -
I'd like to see it but I don't think it can be done successfully.

Some interesting points but it failed to point out a couple of critical issues - not the least of which the announcement that GR broke way too early by mistake! Had that not happened, then GR would probably have been a lot later and launched the End Game at the same time. Instead it all got a bit staggered and delivered piecemeal.
I don't know that Freedom was a result of GR not making a bucketload of money. I think it has become something of a trend amongst MMOs because (especially with the Hybrid mode we see in CoH) it works - the revenue stream of subscription remains and the diehard fans buy more than just the subs. The Booster packs had been a proven success already let's remember. This wasn't completely new territory.
My own feeling is that had the news not broken about GR far too early the whole expansion would have been a lot more impressive and launched with a lot more fanfare - but then the trend of F2P also landed around the same time and made sense for other games... let's remember that another competitive superhero game saved itself by going F2P... and showed it could actually make money.
I wonder if the F2P model had been around in 08 when Tabula Rasa was about.... -
Wait 45 minutes to get a league together.
Start the trial
Wait a bit more because a few people crash whilst joining
Chase around a lot killing stuff.
Kill a named AV - faceplant a lot because there's a previously unseen mechanic that takes a while to work out.
Kill more mobs and chase around some more.
Kill 2 more AVs. Watch out for the strange mechanic again
Crash just before the end and miss the reward -
Quote:Which would be true, and thus completely fine. Giving away stuff for free is GOOD. There is no down side here.or this could be a marketing ploy so that War Witch or some other Dev can say in a interview, "We also give weekly free items to all players of COH" nice little PR stunt
Believe me, I'm no fan of Black Pebble whoever is behind him/her/them - the marketing strategy of this game falls way short of the mark far too often but this isn't one of them. In fact it's so good I suspect somebody from outside of marketing suggested it, it's really that good! -
Quote:Freebie friday is available to everyone, not just VIP players. So, they could cancel their sub and still get the freebie.
True... but give enough people enough warm fuzzies and they will be less inclined to unsub.
Besides, if they want to long in a fremium to claim their prize they may well decide to unlock that other character they've not played in a while... and suddenly... ;-) -
Quote:There are a lot of virtual environments that offer their members regular "treats" - one well known virtual world offers its subscribers a weekly stipend of in world currency plus a free home plus monthly free gifts. They could eat Paragon Studios for breakfast even though their platform is open source and if you had the skills you could compile the code and make your own. They are neither desperate nor getting rid of "clearance" items. They are simply saying "Thanks for being part of what we're trying to do here" and offering those who play a little bonus.well to me it smacks of desperation, someway they can show their bosses how much activity the market is getting, boosting numbers so to speak. I also think for the most part they will be "clearance" items. Things that are not selling, but they want to spark interest.
or they could be "nudging" us to buy sets, have one of them "free" then we may go buy the rest of the set.
Of course Diablo 3 comes out next week and I am sure that had nothing to do with it.
what I expect next is COH will have some promocode published in a game mag. that will give some sort of mini-pet.(yes I know about the codes on MMO.com)
In fact you can easily argue that things are going well for Paragon: Freedom is going so well that they are able to give stuff away for free instead of making every single $ of revenue they can.
This is a very good thing
