Draw from life!!!!
Draw everything you see around you, draw people too
draw lots and often!
bring a sketchbook around with you so you can draw when you're just standing around
learn to draw 'negative space', i.e. don't draw the object, draw stuff AROUND the object, through the object, etc like if it has holes
learn to draw what you SEE not what you THINK you see. For instance a door. You know in your head a door is rectangular, and has right angles on the corners. But if you are looking at a door, you'll see the lines are all skewed and it looks more like a trapezoid. It's a very important skill to teach your brain how to disconnect what you see and what you think you see. But once you figure out how to do it it'll just be automatic.

Don't try to go into anime or comic booky type stuff until you get firm foundations in real life stuff, in my opinion. If you don't know how bodies and faces and stuff are proportioned, you can't exaggerate them for anime or comic book styles. But who knows you may be able to jump into it and do it right away!

Yeah it depends really. Some of my commissions have taken a few days REALLY REALLY fast turn around, some take longer, heck I'm still waiting on one from like February... *sigh*

For me personally I'd RATHER the artist take time and spend a couple weeks doing/working on it. If they knock it out in a few hours, it just makes me feel like they could've done a better job on it if they took a lot longer. But sometimes in a few hours you get this outstanding piece that just makes you go WOW. Really depends.

In other words, take as long as YOU feel you need to in order to a) satisfy yourself and b) satisfy the customer. If you whip out something in a few hours that you think is great and the customer is happy with, then more power to ya!

I'm not sure what ambient occulsion means but that 2nd attempt look FANTABULOUS!!!

Awww thanks. I haven't had much chance to work on ANY of them while I was in Cali, and I've been crazy busy since I've been back. Hopefully things die down soon and I can get back to work!

So tell me what you think? I tried hard to make it look as if the light source was coming from the bottom right... but might be easier to make that happen with colors.


Yeah... a lot of the times if it seems like I'm 'missing' lines it's because I feel that it would be better off color shaded instead of inked shaded. I guess I need to figure out how to ink for inking's sake, and how to ink to prep for coloring.

Okay everybody! FOUR days until my vacation! Today is about the last day I can take inking submissions, for about the next 8 hours or so while I'm at work and can actually print them out (no printer at home!! ). Sooo.... if you have some good nice clean pencils, BIG versions, high res very much preferred, and have the artist's permission, I'd love to ink them! I -PLAN- to get most if not all of these done while I'm on my vacation next week, but we'll see how much time I have. Better to have too much to do than not enough and get bored, right?

Yeah I decided I don't have the patience to ink in photoshop. It was taking me 10x as long just to do a single line I could do with one stroke of my hand. So yeah it's all by hand. Granted by hand it's a little more shakey and not as 'smooth' but that's why they're done really big and then resized smaller, that removes a lot of the jitteryness.

Hehe I"ve been really swamped at work this week, I haven't been able to do -any-thing I'll get to it!! I pawmise!

Well that is pretty nifty and all, but once the novelty wears off is it still worth buying an whole extra card that you might not even be using in 5 years?
