Starting Up. Help?

Ello. I'm trying to start drawing. I get a good idea in my head but sometimes it takes a very very long time to put it on paper. I've only done one that i posted I dont know if anyone remembers the thread "Don't Chew Me Up", i couldn't find it on the boards so i can't show you. Anyways. I look at this forum section everyday. I always end up with my mouth open at some of these pieces. I've seen TA get half the population to do pieces of him, I've seen Rowrs' practicing, I've seen GillBates, Graver, Juggertha- - all great. Do you guys have any pointers or Anything to say at all about starting or drawing or concepts. Anything will help. Thanks and i'll see ya around.

-Keep doing it.
-If at first you don't succeed, get a new piece of paper.
-Keep doing it.

Draw from life!!!!
Draw everything you see around you, draw people too
draw lots and often!
bring a sketchbook around with you so you can draw when you're just standing around
learn to draw 'negative space', i.e. don't draw the object, draw stuff AROUND the object, through the object, etc like if it has holes
learn to draw what you SEE not what you THINK you see. For instance a door. You know in your head a door is rectangular, and has right angles on the corners. But if you are looking at a door, you'll see the lines are all skewed and it looks more like a trapezoid. It's a very important skill to teach your brain how to disconnect what you see and what you think you see. But once you figure out how to do it it'll just be automatic.
Draw lots!
Draw from life!
Don't try to go into anime or comic booky type stuff until you get firm foundations in real life stuff, in my opinion. If you don't know how bodies and faces and stuff are proportioned, you can't exaggerate them for anime or comic book styles. But who knows you may be able to jump into it and do it right away!

That's about all I have. Opinions will differ, your mileage may vary, all rights reserved, etc.

Edit: P.S.: And see all you gotta do to summon me is say my name lol!

On the "what you think you see": Try to think in 3D.

If you're hand isn't hurting, you aren't drawing enough.

If what your drawing becomes a task rather than something you're enthusiastic about...stop drawing, rest up, and start up again when your pumped about your project.

Don't expect to be like Gill, Jedi, CB, or Juggs right away. It takes time. And in time, you will get better.

Post your art for some critisism. You don't have to follow all of them, but anything that makes sence to you, work on it.

Mess with a few other mediums. Paints, Color pencils, Digital (Photoshop, Paint SHop Pro...ext...)

Don't Give up!

Have fun with what you're doing. Simple as that. If you don't enjoy doing it, then you're not doing it for the right reasons.

And don't get frustrated, as hard as that may be some times. (I know, believe me. >_&lt

I would repeat much of what other have already said . But one thing caught my eye in your post. You say that it takes time before you put an idea you have on paper. While it is good to think about what you are going to do I have found it usefull to carry with me a doodle book. That way If an idea strikes I doodle it on the spot while it is fresh . Now these doodle often look nothing like a real picture . It is more lines and circles but to me it has all the info I need for later when I actually sit down and draw.

I do not know if it is of use to you but that is how I avoid having a great idea only to later no be able to recall it correctly.

And has other have said Draw & have fun

I keep a clip board with typing paper that I doodle on constantly

I keep a lil folder of various pictures I find intresting

I like to do some sketching from life , especially when I get over to the zoo

Keep everything even your most embarressing drawings because its good to look back and see how you have improved

don't ever make it into a contest , enjoy your particular style

Everything you draw, no mather what you think of the quality, is a step in the right direction. As many have said above you, never stop. Practice comes from just that, Practice.

Everyone here whos drawing skills you admire, had to learn them from scratch...and many of us consider ourselves STILL learning...

Anyway, good luck and welcome! Don't be afraid to show your stuff, and ask any question you wish.

See ya around!
