Trust me; If I'd kept every drawing I'd crumpled up and thrown down in disgust I'd have suffocated under a mountain of paperwads looooong ago.
Thanks for the kind words

You mean you aren't suppose to keep them in a big mountainous pile?

lookin good so far
Strong start imho <^.^> Love the body shape. Mine are rarely so muscular, but it seems you've got that style down quite well!

I can stand it no longer...I've been trying to draw for over 20 years off and on (more off than on to be honest) and reading this forum over the last couple of weeks has inspired me to break out the ol' lead sharpener and finally crank out at least one "finished" piece of work.
And what better subject to start with than everybody's favorite art collector, right? Let's begin, shall we?
Stage One - The rough sketch.
Just so we're all clear...the figure in the upper left corner was traced over a Tom Strong comic book cover. Its been a while since I handled a lead holder so I figured I would use a small traced figure to base my free-hand sketch off of. The large figure is 100% free-hand and will be the basis for my version of Thor's Assassin.
Please feel free to offer advice, critiques, or any words of encouragement you may have.
Next step: TA's basic costume shapes and adjusting the angle of the right wrist/hand.

wow man I love the pose so far!
Very powerful looking. Looking forward to the next step bro!
Oh and I don't know about everybody's favorite art collector but thanks for the kind words!
Can't wait to see how the piece takes shape!
I wish I could take credit for that pose
I searched long and hard for just the right figure to model this piece on and found this.
The devil is in the details, as they say, and I just hope my finished work can do the foundation justice.
well I think as long as the over all piece is done by you theres no harm to it!
Kinda like using a (wonders what they call it again) posing doll?
From another artist who had to put off his art for responsibilities, go for it! You might be suprised at how quickly the rust can come off. Looking forward to seeing more.
Stage 2 - TA's Costume
Didn't take too long for me to get stuck
Here are two rough draft's I've started and gave up on already.
One
Two
Normally it would be at this point that I would start littering the floor around my desk with wads of paper.
* glances sideways, looking for HexGirl *
Since, however, I have decided to take my creative process online I cannot give up as easily as I have in the past. I have promised a finished prodcut and that is what I must deliver
My biggest problems so far...the armor on the forearm, the hood, and the perspective for the gear-axe-thingamajiggy. I've always had problems determing the perspective for the accessories and scenery in relation to the figures in my drawings.
I will continue to plug away and keep my progress posted. I know there wasn't much progress for this post but I'm taking this project nice and slowww. Thanks for hanging in there with me everyone!
looks good to me. but im an artist that quit becuase i dont think I got any better so I couldnt tell you how to fix it but I think it looks nice
I like a lot
The hood: looks a bit to thick to me specially on the side away from the viewer. Might just be me though
The gloves: Yeah I know what you mean. I just had to draw them on Atomic knight and now on TA. If you look at them They are like big footballs not the normal shape of forearms the wrist is completely lost in them. Mind you I like the gloves you gave him anyway.

Heya Chuck!
I really like how this is turning out man! Like I said above the pose is awesome even is it is taken from somewhere else
Couple things though, you said you were having problems with the position on his right hand (our left). I would think the fingers would be tucked under more showing more knuckle then fingers no?
Oh and a personal thing for me on the visor. It should'nt be as thick as you portray it on #1. Should be a little slit in the midddle like this:
up close screenie
See how they are the thinner goggles? not the thick ones?
Just wanted t point that out but it's looking great so far Chuck!

hey, good work so far on TA (is everyone doing TA right now? )
As for the prop problem you're having, I'd say the best way for you to solve it would be to get a broom and a big round disk (cut a circle out of a cardboard box or some such) and tape it to the business end of the broom. Take your new prop and go pose in front of a full length mirror... or if you have a digital camera with a timer, get several shots of you posing with the prop. Pay special attention to what your fingers and hands are doing to support the broom as well as what position feels most natural for the broom to be in. That should help a lot with the prop position and perspective thing.
Wow! Thanks for all the encouragement gang.
I'm soaking in all the advice and will hopefully have the a rough of the full costume done by tomorrow at the latest. I'll be going out of town today so won't have much time to work on it tonight.
Thanks again!
In the meantime I'm thinking about posting some of my past WIPs (I don't think I've ever actually finished a peice) so you can get a sense of the style I've tried to cultivate.
It's looking very good!!! Putting a lot of time and effort is a sure way of making it come out really really good!
Can't wait to see the progression!
Looking good man. I'm jumping back on the art bus today as well. I think I've got a little more work cut out for me. You look like you are on the right track. Keep it up.

The best thing I ever did, and boy did it take a long time to develop the discipline to keep at it, was to get in the habit of working from a stick figure to basic shapes and save the details for last. I know its been said time and again on these boards but there's a reason for that. Its the one thing that will make the biggest difference in the finished product.
I have more than one skecth book full of nothing but stick fiugres and balloon people...at one point I was drawing nothing but the adventures of "Balloon-Man" and "Stick Boy"...fun stuff

So true. The more fan art I saw of TA the more I felt the urge to try my hand at him. Can't explain it...its just the way it is.
My Sketchbook for anyone who would like to take a peek.
Nice sketches man!!
You need a whole bunch more in there though hehe!

I hope to be able to continue adding more...past and present.
I didn't do any work on your piece this weekend, sorry to say.
The weather here was just too nice so I spent most of the weekend outside with the wife and our son. He's just now 8 months old and its very hard to pull myself away from him.
I haven't given up though just so you know.
